Hello I am having a problem with my gmail on mavericks 10.9 in the mac client. I can add the gmail account but then no messages appearance in the inbox or drop down folder level. Any idea how to fix this?
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||wdurham||10/21/13 11:15 PM|
Are you getting any errors after adding the account? Is it set up correctly, with the correct Gmail server names, port numbers, security settings - see below?

Same issue here. Everything went to the archives folder. Something not right in the way the is syncs up gmail labels with folders in mac mail
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||wdurham||10/22/13 9:16 PM|
For access issues, you probably need to verify the client access - on each device where you use the application, go here https://accounts.google.com/b/0/DisplayUnlockCaptcha and then re-try with the client.
For help with the behaviour of the new Mail provided with Mavericks, then use Apple Support. The syncing of all Gmail messages only to All Mail, leaving the Inbox and all folders empty - is pretty extreme behaviour. Pretty nasty too, as Mail is likely to sync that right back to Gmail....
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||Stephan||10/23/13 5:08 AM|
I have the same problem. Since I updated to Maverick the folders are not syncing correct. It seems like I get some emails in my inbox folder but when I move them in Apple Mail it does not sync with GMAIL and after a while the mails show up in the Inbox folder again.

Same here. Looks like Mavericks is not removing Inbox label from filtered emails.

Same here, Maverick seems to experience some issues with Gmail...
One of my Gmail account syncs correctly, while 4 others don't: all my folders keep desperately empty

Same problem here, mail not synchronising properly since Maverick installed - can't delete from inbox, still seems ok on iphone and web.

The quick fix is to enable the "All Mail" folder in Google's Settings>Labels page. But the underlying Mail problems with Gmail and Google Apps are, unfortunately, not solved simply by enabling the "All Mail" folder (which is not an ideal solution anyways, because it ate up 20 GB of my hard drive space!!)
No, the problems go much deeper than that. This bug gets even worse for Gmail and Google Apps users in the following ways:
#1. Mail no longer recognizes custom-mapped folders for "Sent Mail" and "Trash". Mail in Mavericks FORCES deleted messages to go into Google's Trash, instead of the custom-mapped folder that you might have created for yourself. This is bad news, because if you use Google's Trash, your deleted messages will automatically delete after 30 days. But if you use your own custom-mapped Trash folder, then you can keep your deleted messages around forever.
#2. If you DO try to use a custom-mapped folder in Mail, those folders will appear completely BLANK in Mail, even if they already contain thousands of messages in them on the Gmail website. So you can't even go back and look at your previously-trashed messages from before Mavericks. You have to log into the Gmail website to see your previously-trashed messages, while all newly-trashed messages go into Google's Trash folder (which is undesirable behavior).

I'm having the same problem but found a strange work-around at least until they get this fixed. If you delete the msg from your in-box, then go into the trash & move it from there to your folder it doesn't seem to re-appear in the in-box again. For what it's worth this seems to be working for me. What a pain.
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||Rawlsio||10/23/13 4:08 PM|
I'm also hoping for a fast fix from Apple... But in the meantime, I've switched to the Airmail client (Mac App Store - $1.99). The interface is different enough from Mail that it takes some getting used to. But it is keeping all my mail from multiple gmail accounts with multiple folders in order (just like Mail used to do before Mavericks) and did not require any tinkering on the gmail side. I just entered my accounts with the normal information and it loaded fine. So far, it's keeping perfect synch with my iOS 7 Mail client.

I found the workaround mentioned by @7657530 as well. It seems to work consistently. Just click delete, then go to the trash and move it to a folder.
Another option seems to be to switch off mail filters.
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||John Braithwaite||10/24/13 8:17 AM|
Sadly didn't work for me - I have a GMAIL (Google Apps) and an IMAP account (two separate email accounts) and I can't delete and then move, and I have switched off the filters and nothing happens. It's madness - my whole way of managing email is keeping a clean inbox - and this makes it virtually impossible.
My only work-around is to use webmail (Gmail) for the adding to folders and then it syncs through, but hardly a great solution (as I hate the GMAIL interface anyway).

I'm having issues on my desktop/mavericks 10.9 upgrade that once I move an item into a subfolder that it still shows up in my inbox.
A solution I just found is that if you have your mail synced with your iPhone, and if you move the message in the iPhone mail, that it takes effect on the desktop version even when you switch in and out of multiple mail accounts.
A real PIA considering how many folders and emails I get but at least it's getting it out of my inbox on my desktop.

Be patient - if you leave it for a few hours it will sort itself out. It will also free up a lot of space that was taken by storing multiple copies of messages in the past.
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||AntonIRL||10/25/13 12:37 AM|
@aisaapps, just leave mac mail open for a few hours?
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||AsiaApps||10/25/13 1:07 AM|
worked for me! I read the forums above last night and was quite worried that my system was all screwed up. I resisted the temptation to change any settings. When I got up this morning, everything was working fine - and i had a bonus of 25GB extra free space on my disk.
Lots of other people have done all sorts of reconfig work....don't know what their outcomes are. Often makes other & bigger problems IMHO!

Yes, it slowly seems to be sorting itself out.... I gave it some time and then suddenly it caught up (it was almost as if whilst it was completing the syncing it was also pausing any changes being made to the inbox)... let's see if it remains stable.

I did too. Lost all my archive/labeled emails.
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||Rawlsio||10/25/13 2:50 PM|
Still broken for me. Email deleted or moved into a folder in the gmail web interface or in other mail clients (including Mail on iOS devices) does not update correctly in the Mail client running under Mavericks. The only thing I have been able to do that restores proper function under Mavericks is to switch to a new client (in my case Airmail).
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||Cheryl2||10/25/13 3:41 PM|
I navigated to the edit screen for my Gmail account, and I selected the apple TLS certificate there instead of leaving that area empty. See if it works for you.
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||dkliman||10/30/13 6:22 AM|
Mail with gmail in mavericks is a mess. Many very important messages fleetingly appear as a notification on the screen then go hide in the archive folder. nothing gets put into any of the couple dozen custom folders i have anymore. occasional random messages do make it into the inbox, but there is no rhyme or reason why.
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||Rawlsio||10/30/13 8:24 AM|
Yes - it's messed up and is not getting better. I've been on this thread since day 1, and none of the proposed fixes here or in the attached articles have helped. My Mail app under Mavericks still won't maintain synch with my underlying gmail accounts or with the Mail clients on my iOS devices.
I have switched to Airmail for the time being because it was easy to set up and it behaves the way Mail used to behave on OSX before Mavericks.
But does anybody know if Apple is actually working on a fix? The support page at Apple was not encouraging last time I looked.
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||chriswalters7||10/30/13 8:40 AM|
I had saved all my emails to Time Machine and restored them locally to my computer and have them in mail now as local files only (all my gmails had been deleted from the gmail server and from mail folders). I deleted my gmail account in mail and added it new to mail. It took a day or two but now seems to be working and syncing without any problems. I still haven't tried to reload my emails back into the Gmail server yet and probably won't for the time being. And I also have still not seen any fixes mentioned anywhere.

I seem to getting this issue right now, started about 15mins ago, it would not even sync up with my iphone now. Is there any fix?
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||Rawlsio||10/30/13 9:03 PM|
I was on the phone with Apple Support this AM. They say this issue constitutes over 80% of their support call volume for all Mavericks issues. They say the symptoms and issues people have experienced are varied and inconsistent. According to the supervisor I spoke to (yeah, I'm that guy who asks to speak to the supervisor when the support rep sounds uncertain), some people have been helped by rebuilding their mail folders in Mac Mail. Didn't work for me and he said he wasn't surprised.
He assured me it is being worked on by both Apple and Google. Apple thinks it's a Google server side issue (gmail is not correctly communicating with Mac Mail). Not sure what Google thinks, but with 720M gmail users versus an OSX installed base of 70-75M, they might think it's something for Apple to fix.
The Apple supervisor could only give me a time frame of "a week to a month" for one of the companies to publish a fix that solves the underlying problem. In the meantime, I'm going to continue using the Airmail for Mac client, which works exactly the way Mac Mail used to work, and only costs $2. Been on it for a week now and it has kept in perfect synch with gmail and ios mail clients. Will go back to Mac Mail 7.x when they've really corrected the problems.
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||wdurham||10/30/13 9:24 PM|
Apple thinks it's a Google server side issue (gmail is not correctly communicating with Mac Mail).
I'd find that very funny if it weren't so sad for Mac users. Apple make major undocumented changes in Mail to - they claim - make life easier for Gmail users by better accommodating Gmail's non-standard IMAP implementation. They fail to make it work.
Some users are not only experiencing minor or major glitches as reported here, but have had their entire Gmail accounts completely wiped out. And not just deleted, but deleted "forever" at a stroke, bypassing Gmail's Trash.
Sparrow, Airmail, Mailbox - all the other third-party Mac IMAP clients are still working faultlessly with Gmail's IMAP implementation.
So when the new, updated Mail - Apple's own client - damages or deletes Gmail user accounts, it's Google's fault? Yeah, right.
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||mlemoine||10/31/13 2:22 PM|
I am having a similar problem with Mavericks version of Mail.
When I delete a message from "Inbox" it behaves normally but the moment I view any other Mail folder "On My Mac" when I go back to "Inbox" every message I've deleted since the upgrade to Mav is in the inbox again.
I use "Inbox" to manage my work flow. Anything in the Inbox is relevant and requires action at some point. Having these deleted messages reappear is a huge problem!

I have lost everything in my labeled boxes as soon as I added Mavericks. Disappeared from everywhere. Tired of google, doesn't work that well any more. I am going to try out Airmail.
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||Rawlsio||11/1/13 10:08 AM|
I am using Airmail now -- but as a client to replace Mac Mail 7.0, not a mail server relacing gmail. It works great as a mac client app integrating with gmail..,

I had the similar problem: Here’s a step-by-step work around to fix it for Gmail accounts until the update is released:
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||Rawlsio||11/2/13 1:06 PM|
Just to be clear, this may be a fix for some issues for some users, but it is not "the" fix... It has hot solved the synching problems I and many other users continue to experience after going through exactly this process.

Instead of freaking out and running around changing lots of things, I've simply made a Smart Mailbox which contains both my Gmail "All Mailboxes" folder and my other Inbox (add as needed). For now, this acts as my comprehensive mailbox, and hopefully the normal inbox will update as others have suggested.

I installed and have been testing this for a while -- checking to see if mail deleted or moved between folders in iOS mail and in gmail ends up in the proper places in the updated version Mac Mail.
So far, so good! I will continue to test it, but so far Mac Mail has maintained synch with gmail and iOS mail after several dozen moves and deletions using all three clients...

On my iMac running OS X 10.9 (13A603), the Mail program is still not working right with Gmail. The last email showing in my inbox is from yesterday. I have sent test messages to my Gmail account but they have not shown up. My iPhone and my MacBook Mail programs are working fine....
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||wdurham||11/11/13 1:22 AM|
If other versions of Mail are "working fine", then there's nothing wrong with earlier versions of Mail and nothing wrong with your Gmail account.
Your issue is with Mavericks Mail. Did you download and install Apple's bug-fix mentioned above?
Find it here: Fix bugs in Mavericks Mail
If you still can't fix Mail in Mavericks, then you will need to find an alternative client that works, or just keep waiting for Apple to fix Mail. Many Mac users in the Apple Support Forums report that the other Mac-compatible email clients are all still working fine....

I had to help my sister out (even though I fixed my iMac). Eventually I just deleted the Gmail Account and started again, and, hey presto, it works.
The 'switching off and then on again' works for Apple devices too ;-)
|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||jasonSadair||11/11/13 11:53 AM|
well, i ended up just deleting my gmail account off of Mavericks Mail & iOS 7 Mail, and then adding them back from scratch.
everything "seems" to work in both Mail programs -BUT- i've noticed in my testing that whenever i move a message in Mac Mail from one folder to another (inbox to archive, or any folder to any other folder; Except Trashing - that works), that gmail in the web browser KEEPS the label of the folder/label i move it out of when it moves it to where i moved it. like a "copy" instead of a "move".
driving me crazy! i want a clean inbox, and i want to have my email sorted how I want it sorted; but this means i either still have to do it all thru the web browser OR do it twice (once in mac mail & then go to the web browser to lean up all the leftover labels).
oddly enough, the iPhone does NOT do this; when i move a message there, it moves it everywhere else as it should.
any tricks to making mac mail do this correctly?

|Re: Gmail not syncing to Mac Mail mavericks 10.9||tlskiallman||12/3/13 3:48 PM|
I found that displaying the Mail program's Window/Activity window clarified that most of my problem was with a very slow syncing of Mail with my Gmail "All Mail" folder which is quite large.
While it appeared that Mail was not syncing with Gmail, it was actually just very slow. Watching the Activity progress bars you can tell when it's done.
