I get emails from different people, they have same email id without .(dot), I get more sensitive msg lokesh_carson 6/16/12 11:06 PM
my email id is r.lo...@gmail.com and i get emails of rlokesh@gmail sometimes I get very senstive information as well, I am afraid that my emails will also be sent to unknown person and my sensitive message are in wrong person hand, I have been using this as my personal and I all my friends and coworkers contact me with id.

I am afraid to give this Id to other ppl now, please tell me how can i solve this problem.

two person is allowed to created emails with .(dot) and without .(dot) and both person email get redirected of sent to wrong person, I am still not sure what is the algorithm written for this context.

If this is known issue then I would expect this is fixed by now, I dont think Google can keep this kind of high severity  issue open still.

Dots in account names are not significant.  That is, first.last@ is the same e-mail address as firstlast@.  Receiving a message with an address with a different configuration of dots does not mean there are two accounts with the same name.

In like manner, @gmail.com and @googlemail.com are also the same and do not represent two different accounts.

In addition, first.last@ is the same as FIRST.LAST (or any other combination) and also does not represent two different accounts.

There are not two accounts with the same name and no one is getting e-mail that hasn't been sent specifically to their account.

That said... There is nothing to prevent people from using the wrong address when they send a message, or giving out the wrong address (like on a business card or when registering at a web-site) to others.  Think of it as someone dialing the wrong phone number, or getting a couple digits reversed when giving the number to someone else.

Just to clarify, you are not receiving e-mail addressed to someone else, you are receiving e-mail intended for someone else but miss-addressed to you.

Hi bkc56,

Really sorry, but I'm afraid I still don't understand. I've been having this issue for some years now and frankly, I think it is stunning that gmail has not fixed this. Probably it is not fixed because it is not seen as an issue, but for me certainly is. I have been receiveing "miss-addressed" emails with sensitive information, the last one a couple of hours ago, and to be honest, I am not sure I would like the least to have anyone see the information I am receiving.

So the thing is, I understand what you just explained to lokesh_carson, but I have just checked: they send the emails to is not mine.
My address is name.lastname, and I just got one to namelastname.

So the theory of the "miss-addressed" email wouldn't work, would it?
Could you clarify this for me please?

Thank you very much in advance.
Regards,
IRSB

My address is name.lastname, and I just got one to namelastname.

That's EXACTLY what I talked about above.  The dot does not count in the name, so name.lastname is the SAME address as namelastname.  Someone out there does not remember their correct e-mail address (which may be something like namelastname42) and are giving out namelastname to people.  So you get the messages at name.lastname, and he gets nothing at namelastname42.

Thank you bkc56...
But why would gmail let two users have the SAME address? that's my bottom line.

Sorry to bother

Regards,

They didn't.  The two people have different addresses.  But one of them THINKS his address is something different than it actually is.

I am getting the same issue. My email is rayl...@gmail.com and I am getting emails for ray.l...@gmail.com. It is very frustrating and I am considering disconnecting my account over it. I have a lot of personal information sent to my email I dont want my emails going to someone else by mistake

The won't.  The other person has a different account and is not receiving e-mail sent to your account.

@bkc56
You are wrong. I'm having the same issue. And I have proof that it's not just someone accidentally using my email address without the dot because they are signing up for services that require a password. The only way they could sign up for these services is by receiving and confirming the email.
So basically I'm getting their emails and I have to wonder if they are receiving mine.
Somewhere in google there is a glitch allowing duplicate accounts to be created.

You are wrong.

Sorry, years of experience with this issue says I'm not wrong.

The only way they could sign up for these services is by receiving and confirming the email.

Except for the cases that don't.  Fakebook allows limited activity without confirming the account as do some other services.  Some web-sites provide alternate verification methods for cases where the e-mail is lost.

... and I have to wonder if they are receiving mine.

Nope, because they have a different e-mail address.  It's impossible for there to be two identical accounts.

Somewhere in google there is a glitch allowing duplicate accounts to be created.

People keep claiming that.  I'm still waiting for someone to prove it.  Every time I tell people how, they vanish without another post.  I figure they realize what is happening and are to embarrassed to come back and admit their error  (well, I recall one who was brave enough, but just one).
