Receive 2 factor authentication SMS messages from known Google SMS email address? Pete N 8/19/12 9:29 AM
I currently have SMS / text messaging turned off on my cell phone account. I use AT&T Wireless.

I have no need/interest in using SMS in the real world with one exception: for 2 factor authentication from Google.

AT&T Wireless will allow me to block all incoming SMS messages except those from a SPECIFIC email address (or a list of SPECIFIC email address) that I specify in advance.

Do Google's SMS account verification messages always come a known SPECIFIC email address? If so, what is this email address?

Thanks.

Pete N

Hi Pete N.,

I'm sure those SMSs must come from a list of specific email addresses but I don't think they have published that list. With hundreds of millions of Gmail users there are probably quite a few.

You don't have to receive the 2-step code as an SMS. You can choose to receive the 2-step code in voice form.

Pray tell, how can I do this?

Click on your name at the top right.
Select "Account" in the dropdown box.
Click on "Security" at the left side.
Click on "Edit" in the 2-step verification section.
Provide your username and password.
In the "How to receive codes" section click on "Edit" next to your primary phone number.
In the "Send codes by" section select "Voice call".
Confirm it in the "Lets test the phone" section and then click on "Save".

While you're in the 2-step settings area it's a great time to make sure you have a printed list of Backup Verification Codes and one or more Backup Phones.
