Re: Visible Shipwreck Collection earthgoogler 2/14/08 3:14 PM
Hi Chiclanero!

I posted the 'war vessel wrecked near Polyarnyy' some days ago (link to post). The dimensions and the rear superstructure with the gun tubs match the 'Riga' / Gepard class (project 50) frigate.

Note to sasroodkapje: This wreck is twice in the collection now. It was also found by Fairlane500 and is in your collection as 'Russian Naval Vessel. 1831'. Sorry, I had not seen Fairlane500's post when I made my post.
Re: Visible Shipwreck Collection earthgoogler 2/14/08 3:25 PM
The ship in the east looks like another 'Riga' / Gepard class frigate. The rear part is partly submerged so it's hard to measure the exact length but the width and the arrangement of the gun turrets and the bridge matches the Riga class. There are / were not many Russian warship classes with these dimensions.
Re: Visible Shipwreck Collection sasroodkapje 2/14/08 11:49 PM
Hi earthgoogler,,

Fairlane posted it on 02-02. I ad your folder "Russia_wrecks" to the collection. becouse of the extra information.
So I leave it the way it is.

Regards and greetings,

Can't tell if this is beached, sunken, or just floating in extremely shallow waters. However, on this same island a little SSE from here, there's another sunken ship already identified so this one may have found the same fate, just not so long ago.

I'm afraid that one is beyond my ID skills. There is something on the bow that looks like a gun turret but I'm not sure. I'm not even sure of the length of the ship. Is it one ship or is there something else at the rear end? The resolution is too bad to tell.
Re: Visible Shipwreck Collection Chiclanero 2/23/08 9:39 AM
Well,it´s hard to say if this boat is a wreck or not;it´s sure that she is beached.Watch the photo of Steppenwolf and you´ll understand.

wreck Murmansk. 231 earthgoogler 3/6/08 3:37 AM
The ship you labeled 'wreck Murmansk. 231' is a Project 305 class generator ship (NATO reporting name 'Tomba'). This class of ships was used to generate electricity for the Kiev class aircraft carriers when these were in port. Four 'Tomba' class ships were built, probably one for each carrier. Like most Soviet / Russian auxilliary ships, the 'Tomba' class ships did not carry names but only letter-number combinations. This particular ship was the ENS-254. Here is a forum post (translated from Russian) with some pictures of the wreck.
sunken Navy ship, 120 earthgoogler 3/6/08 3:45 AM
Here is a picture of the wreck 'sunken Navy ship, 120'. It is a 'Petya' class anti-submarine frigate. The picture was taken from the same Russian forum as the picture of the 'Tomba' class wreck nearby.

And this is how the ship looked before it was wrecked (picture taken from FAS):
2 sunken vessel, Polyarnyy. 124 earthgoogler 3/6/08 3:57 AM
The ships placemarked as '2 sunken vessel, Polyarnyy. 124' are pictured in a photo I found on this Russian forum (near the bottom of the page).

The ship to the north is called Hariton Laptev. I don't know what class this ship belongs to or what it's function was.
The other ship is called CER-501 Zaporozhye. She was an intelligence collection ship ('spy ship') during the Cold War.
Here is another photo of the wreck:

And one taken during the ship's better days:

EDIT: There is a problem with the images. They don not always show up when using the 'image' tag but always work when linked to with the 'URL' tag :

'Polyarnyy. 122' and 'Murmansk 233' earthgoogler 3/6/08 4:17 AM
I found a report on this little bay on a Russian website that lists the ships and submarines there. The submarines are two 'Golf' class ballistic missile submarines from the 1960s (diesel-powered, but equipped with nuclear missiles) and two K class submarines from WWII (!) that were later used as training hulks. There are also the remains of three corvettes and two minesweepers as well as a patrol craft.
wreck. 619 earthgoogler 3/6/08 4:36 AM
'wreck. 619' in Gremikha looks like a 'Lama' class missile transport. This wreck can be seen in the background of a photo on this website:

An operational ship of this class can be found in Sevastopol at 44°37'7.32"N, 33°33'6.13"E. Note that the bow, the superstructure and the cranes on the main deck of the ship match those on the wreck.
sub wreck. 620 earthgoogler 3/6/08 4:43 AM
The imagery of Gremikha was changed with one of the recent updates and is of a lower quality than the previous imagery. Sadly, the 'sub wreck. 620' is now less clearly visible. I think this wreck is the WWII S-class submarine S-51. The S-51 was stripped of its outer hull and left on the shore near Gremikha. The outer hull was used to construct a submarine memorial in the town nearby. This website has photos of both the wreck and the memorial.

wrecks, SU. 522 earthgoogler 3/13/08 7:42 AM
There are two kinds of wrecks visible at the placemark titled 'wrecks, SU. 522' on the Russian Pacific coast: Some small wrecks sitting on land and a group of half-sunken wrecks in the water. Those half-sunken wrecks are 'Whiskey' class submarines. I found some pictures of them on the internet. Originally there were 14 submarines laid up there. Over the years the subs sank or were partly scrapped. More recent photos show six to ten remaining wrecks.

Lara Shipwreck

The Lara was a Cypriot freighter of 4,752 grt built in Germany and launched in 1956. In November 1982 she sailed from Aqaba and drove hard onto Jackson Reef where she became stuck fast. Almost immediately rumours began about an insurance fraud - an allegation supported by the discovery of only sufficient fuel on board to reach the reef on which she foundered. It was also claimed that somebody remained on board the stricken vessel for over 2 years - giving rise to further allegations in connection with drug trafficking.

0000000000

In later years, it seems that people were in the habit of boarding the wreck to help themselves to whatever bits and pieces they could remove and this, apparently became something of a problem for the Egyptian authorities. Although the actual date is not clear, it would seem that in 1996 (although it may have been some years earlier), those authorities ordered the Lara "demolished" - a most interesting development as far as diving is concerned.

There is also a yacht nearby that used to be owned by the Shah of Iran.
Re: Visible Shipwreck Collection thekingofmice 2/14/09 8:19 AM
I have another group of wrecks to add. Near Maysville, KY there is a small fleet known as John Beatty's Navy partially consisting of Hercules (a floating crane), the Clair E Beatty (towboat named after his wife) and a pair of WWII minesweepers with a shared hoist and salvage equipment.

After his death, there were several bungled attempts to raise a sunken barge by the new owner which resulted in all of the above mentioned ships being sunk. For more info and some ground level pictures see http://www.maysville.com/main/page/15/John+Beatty%27s+Navy

Although the GE photos aren't as clear as I would like, you can see the pilothouse of the Claire E Beatty, part of Hercules's superstructure and the hull of one of the overturned minesweepers. There have been attempts to have this stuff removed, but they have all been overturned by the city and the remains are likely to stay for the forseeable future.

Re: Visible Shipwreck Collection spotter2 5/23/09 9:55 PM
You've posted a listing tugboat in a marina in Richmond, California. I think I can give a little history of it. I'm sorry to say I can't remember her name, but she's a leftover from WWII, from some paperwork I saw on board she used to be based out of the Hunters Point shipyard. There were log entries that showed she had towed ships like aircraft carriers and battleships during the war, that tug has character and history.
I know because I almost owned her. She had been used by a private tug company in the bay, when she was too old they cut a huge square hole in the top deck, and they removed her engine and internal bulkheads, all that was left inside were the crew quarters in the bow and an empty cavernous shell, and they spot welded the deck back on.
She was bought by a local character who intended to turn her into a floating dance hall for Rave parties!
He was going to anchor her in the bay just offshore from the San Francisco waterfront, he had the crazy idea that the police wouldn't be able to bother the party out there. He had to have her towed across the bay, and at that point they discovered the rudder was frozen hard over, she was veering all over on the towline, so they had to use two tugs to tow her, at twice the expense. Then he discovered how much it costs to dock a hundred foot tug, and how much the insurance costs, and when he tried to throw the first Rave party he was swarmed by the coast guard.
When I saw her she was docked over by the baseball field, and the city had foreclosed for unpaid dock fees. I checked her out, the hull was still incredibly strong and sound, no leaks, and the prospects for turning her into a houseboat were excellent. The cost? Nothing, they were desperately trying to give her away!

Chiclanero... Un viajero y un poeta! smile

Traveller and poet in one; these small boats have had a long history, it is interesting when someone have the story to tell about them, like Spotter2.

The ship in West Sahara that Chiclanero found is correct as I have seen it in person.

This is the Gallant Lady on North Bimini, Bahamas. Although it is very hard to make out with the current image quality, this is actually the shipwreck used in the "Visible Shipwreck Collection" banner image that shows up in the window when you click on any shipwreck's icon in this collection. I'm surprised no one has posted this one before, since its picture is so frequently used.

I visited this wreck back in '98. As it was in better overall shape back then, I was able to climb up on the ship and explore the interior.

Two tanker barges lying side by side in River Severn on site of collision.

Severn Bridge Disaster
On 25th October 1960 the Severn Rail Bridge suffered a tragic accident.
Thick fog and a strong tide meant that boats entering Sharpness Docks were having extra difficulty. Two tanker barges, the Arkendale H and Wastdale H, laden with oil and patrol missed the entrance and were carried upstream towards the Severn Railway Bridge. The Wastdale H collided with column 17, her petrol tanks ruptured and the force of the tide pushed the Arkendale H on top of her.
The collision caused two bridge spans to collapse rupturing a gas main and electric cable. There was a mighty explosion and the barges burst into flames. Fire spread across the river as oil and petrol spilled into the water. Of the eight crew only three survived having swum to the safety of the shore.
It was not economically viable to rebuild the bridge which was later demolished. At low tide it is still possible to see the remains of the tanker barges and the bridge supports lying in the mud.

Nearby LST-342 is the Japanese Mutsuki Class Destroyer, Kikuzuki No. 23. Torpedoed on May 4, 1942 by TBMs from the carrier USS Yorktown.

Late in 1943, the USN attempted to salvage her. She was raised and towed to her current position in order to gain information about Japanese destroyers.

Update:- This would appear to be MT Elli which broke it's back near to the southern entrance to the Suez Canal on 28/8/2009. Possibly on it's way to India/Pakistan for breaking up?

Update: Turns out the wreck was not submerged, but was removed by either the City of Chicago or the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. This was the location of the Showboat Sari-S, and it sat in ruins for years until 2007 or so.

I don't know if this placemark set is still being updated, but I found a ship accident at a pier in Iran that isn't marked.

I did a little research, but turned up nothing. I doubt I can find anything out about this one.

Great find! Here's a photo:

There's another, 1981 photo in the article here. Looks like she lost a mast between the taking of the two photos.

"The oceanographic ship" Almirante Alvaro Alberto "- H 43, was the first Brazilian Navy ship to have that name. Before being acquired in February 1987 for $ 3 million, Grant was called Mariner, and initially Polar 901. It was built by a shipyard in Port Arthur, Texas, as a tug to support offshore platforms. It was incorporated in the MB June 6th, 1988 after being adequate for the Navy Arsenal of Rio de Janeiro. Media 66.15 m length 13.42 m in breadth and 4.74 m draft. moved 363 tons and was powered by two 12-cylinder engine, coupled to a single axis, total 4800 Bhp. He had a top speed of 14 kts and housed up to 57 crew members. capsized on December 16, 1992, at 15:30 pm due to a fire that started in the engine room, the MN 25 lighthouse Itapuã, when he returned after an operation surveys by sea between the shores of Sao Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul
According to item 66 of the ratio of the Buoy Guaiba River and Patos Lagoon, the coordinates of the buoy marking the wreck of the "Alberto Alvaro" are: S30 ° 47.25 'W51 ° 10.38'.
As a list of waypoints Tapense Yacht Club, the coordinates of the sunken ship Alvaro Alberto are: S30 ° 47.400 'W51 ° 10.613'. One fact about this ship comes to mind: and he sank on the trade route and was towed, dragged along the bottom to the current position a few months later, to improve traffic safety in the region. For this reason the two positions.

The German pocket battleship turned turtle after being bombed by the RAF at Kiel. The overturned hull was buried as part of land reclamation but over time the hull has collapsed with the weight of the soil on her so the vague outline is now visible on Google Earth in the centre of the picture.

Small wreck by Hudson's Seafood Restaurant in Hilton Head Island. Local story is that the owner didn't secure it to the nearby dock properly and decided it wasn't worth salvaging.

This interesting ship has been moored "for repairs" for some time now, but the wikipedia page seems to indicate that the unfortunate owner is content with it rusting in place.
