I will try to put up a network link to allow to view the race position in real time on the globe.
I will start to work this saturday as soon the first position information is published on the net.
The Plan is to have the actual position of all 7 boats (Update every 6 hours or so) and the track of each boat from start to actual position.
If one has some suggestion every one is welcome to submit an idea.
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 Live tracking||Frank4||11/11/05 5:18 AM|
Glad to hear you guys are doing this. After the race gets started, I will do a write-up at the Google Earth Blog on this.
I've been looking forward to following a long-distance yacht race in GE!
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 Live tracking||lucifer666||11/12/05 4:13 AM|
Here is my version of the Volvo Ocean Race in Google Earth
NEW version with compressed KMZ files.
You have the stages, the race track and seven boats waiting for a start in the Bay of Vigo.
The Boats are on Network link. As soon I get position information from the web i will start updating the boats position.
Old Placemark removed, See post below for the version for Leg 2.
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 Live tracking||lucifer666||11/12/05 12:05 PM|
WE ARE MOOVING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Parsing the web page was not so easy, they sort the boats according to position in the race which makes it a little more difficult, I have to sort the right coordinates to the right boat...
Updated position information is about every hour around the full hour.
I will stick to update just before 10 past the hour.
Next task will be to draw the past course line for each boat.
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 Live tracking||lucifer666||11/12/05 2:03 PM|
Here you can find the global cloud map, updated every 3 hours.
That is giving you a pretty good idea of the weather in front of the racers.
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 Live tracking||Frank4||11/13/05 5:33 AM|
Great work lucifer666! I'm making this network link a part of my regular daily review.
Is is possible for you to have a separate folder showing the datapoints which make up the tracks for each yacht? And, can you put in the description for each boat the timestamp so we know what time the position report was made?
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 Live tracking||lucifer666||11/13/05 8:16 AM|
Well it seems we have the same thoughts...
Just before reading your post I implemented the points for the track and the timestamp in the description.
Just refresh the network link for each boat (or more simple restart GE)
When you click on one boat or waypoint the timestamp will show up.

Heh...that was fast work!
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 Live tracking||Frank4||11/13/05 10:53 AM|
De Nada Ali_Bey. ¿Y gracias por la oferta del vino, pero cuál son "Tapas"?
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 Live tracking||Ali_Bey||11/14/05 10:21 AM|

Those of you who are sailors, and like following this race, should also look at the Jaques Vabre Transat race which is already almost half way. Roland Jordain and Ellen MacArthur are just one of the teams in this race.
The JVT has excllent near real-time data provided by the GIS company ERSI.
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 Live tracking||lucifer666||11/19/05 6:44 AM|
Today some rework had to be done for optimisation of the data for the network link in order to reduce the load on my web site.
I would not like to be forced to suspend the network link because of reaching the monthly trafic limit.
Today you could observe some strange behaviour of the boats because I
made some mistakes in optimisation of the size of the data files by dropping duplicate data when the ship is not moving any more.
Then POTC retired from the leg and no position is posted any more, thats why POTC was to be found at coordinates N 0.00 E 0.00 :-)
Regarding the old Network link, on the next refresh the user is taken to a download link for the new version.
Now all should be fine.

Both yesterday and today I opened the Volvo race link and got a download error on Brazil1. I did not get redirected to a new download link and none of the boats nor their tracks showed. I really enjoyed the race link.

|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 Live tracking||lucifer666||11/21/05 12:43 AM|
Sorry you had problems, my mistake I put the redirection only on the ABN1 link.
But when you get an error before getting to update ABN1 that is not very helpfull.
Now i put a redirection on all boats, leaving them on the Greenwitch meridian at the equator.
The new KMZ file is under: Volvo Ocean Race
Please give feedback if everything is OK now.
Regarding the bandwith problem which urged me to change the system, I got a download volume of 520 MB of data over 3 days.
Now the load on the server is down to reasonable values within my hosting plan.
You are between 200 and 300 visitors following the race everyday.

|Re: Volvo Ocean Race South atlantic wind||elonaeus||11/23/05 3:26 PM|
This is what I think is a working version of a southern atlantic wind overlay, from NOAA (if i work out how to include the kmz). Shows wind speed not wind direction.
Seems to work locally for me hope it works globally - first post.
Oh - and thanks Lucifer for the positions
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race South atlantic wind||elonaeus||11/23/05 3:57 PM|
Should this be correct, it looks like the leaders might have benefited from turning east earlier (after Fernando) . Depending on wind direction...
AUS1 could pick up some wind...
However i I don't feel the map matches the wind speed readings of the boats...
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race South atlantic wind||lucifer666||11/23/05 11:11 PM|
Yes it works also for me,
Nice overly, I had found another similar one but the coverage was not good with only 50% in NS stripes.

Here is the wind map overlay for the Indian Ocean and eastward.
Fit is not perfect but gives an indication.
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 Live tracking||Frank4||1/8/06 10:48 AM|
There seems to be a problem with the 2nd leg. The Last Postion report data is giving an error saying "#WERT!".
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 Live tracking||lucifer666||1/8/06 12:57 PM|
Yes I noticed it since the start but I was away from home and could not fix the issue.
All is corrected since this evening!
It was just a small parsing problem with the date, a blank was missing in the new version of the webpage so i got an error while transforming the date (#WERT is the german error message you get in excel when it can not compute the value!)
Fortunately I save the raw data fron the web query so I could reconstruct all the data.
Position information was always accurate, only the time stamp was missing.
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 Live tracking||William_McIntosh||1/9/06 5:15 AM|
Just wanted to say thanks Lucifer, this is a great post! I really appreciate what you've done.
I was worried they were going to protect any sort of "real-time" data for the Virtual Spectator group. Did you have any difficulties with data availability? Excellent work!
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 data availability||lucifer666||1/11/06 11:57 AM|
Data availability was never a principle problem.
During Leg one there where a few days where the server from Volvooceanrace.org was down for up to one hour or so which crashed my programm because i did not implement enough error handling routines.
Basically I implemented some random timing between my page hits to simulate a human user instead of downloading always the same 8 pages within a few seconds.
As the information is published on the info page for each boat and the data is dinamically fed from a CMS system I would guess they will not want to compleately redo their web page just to keep me out...
The most tricky part was to extract the data from the Web page as the layout is adjusted quite often.
I am glad you apreciate it
|Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2005/2006 data availability||Frank4||1/13/06 9:46 AM|
Hey Lucifer, thanks for the more details about how you are doing this.
I just noticed you've added boat speed, and links to each team's web page. Nice additions!

|VOR: Leg 4 Ice Gates||lucifer666||2/24/06 4:49 AM|
Hi all, [Update Feb. 24, 22:30]
Finally The information on the Ice Gates has been published.
The Gates are included in the network link, no additional download required!
|Re: VOR: Leg 4 Ice Gates||EduardoV||2/25/06 9:45 AM|
The ice gates are at the wrong position.
The correct coordinates are:
-48.0 -148.0 IG 1 >
-48.0 -140.0 IG 1 <
-48.0 -130.0 IG 2 >
-48.0 -125.0 IG 2 <
|Re: VOR: Leg 4 Ice Gates||lucifer666||2/25/06 10:30 AM|
Thanks for the right coordinates.
I Placed them approximately based on the picture published on the VOR homepage.
I fixed it! But you are lucky the VNC connection to my home in Germany is working here from the Hotel in Bilbao, Spain.
|Re: VOR: Leg 4 Ice Gates||EduardoV||2/25/06 4:01 PM|
It's perfect now!

The network link is ready to run. Enjoy it.
|Re: Live tracking Download Here||Jerominus||5/31/06 7:06 AM|
For Gonny to Lucifer666 and all the rest: thanks.
I read the whole thread again and it rocks me off my feet. The story of building this collaboraive idea is just breath-taking when you read it back date by date..fantastic. The real-time content is great.
I would like to add up possible boats 3D models from our server when this is possble to link up the real-time database content to our M3D server.
Lucifer666, can you get in contact to discuss if it is possible to implement this link very fast (could it be like some hours delay? or real-time?), say from end of Leg 8 to get ready for the Rotterdam City Race to the Finish in Gutenborg?
We are working hard with Globe Glider to release the M3D Glider soon, and this project is perfect to simulate in real-time 3D. We hope to be able to use good 3D models with some real-time variation as to wind direction/ sailing sets.. (yes I am a sailing fanatic myself too, Frank). Of course time is pressing till the finish! So Rotterdam is the perfect Stopover!
We really hope it is possible by some miracle to link-up some data stream (with wind direction so we program the models to simulate the situation at sea, with several sail sets ?) to our Glider tech and get the boats mod'd just in time for the Rotterdam Race and Finish! (with some great help from ZNO JasonM when he can take off for this one!) All ifs ifs ifs..
Please tack me a line at: in...@mediality3D.com
