|62 roman amphitheatres in high res||H21||10/4/05 2:17 AM|
There are many ruins of roman amphitheatres around Mediterranean sea.
You can find 62 of them here (all in high resolution). At least 60 more are in low res areas.
Caution : there are only Amphitheatres here (full elliptical form) and not Theatres (half-circular form).
For ancient theatre, you can see this post :
Do you know others ?

Hi there H21.
This is good stuff - keep it coming. However I think you should delete the placemark from the first post when you post an update to the set - otherwise there will be duplicate placemark created in the application. Additionally, it will make it easier for people using Search to find the most advanced version.
Hope that's useful.

The correct location of Nola's amphitheatre is:
Latitude - 40°55'40.01"N
Longitude - 14°31'13.95"E
|Re: 32 roman amphitheatres in high res||H21||1/28/06 8:02 AM|
thank you for that post.
The location has been corrected.
|Re: 32 roman amphitheatres in high res||cali1981||2/2/06 1:20 PM|
The correct coordinates for Bevanga, Italy, are 42° 56' 11.95'' N 12*36'53.51'' E.
The ones you gave before are the coorrdinates of the theatre in the center of the city. You can't see the amphiteatre very well, but you can guess it's existence from the terrain and the plants around.
Hope this helps!

Please check the place at E 12º 42' 42,12'' N 43º 49' 42.6'' ... it's an oval shaped tree mass, could this be an amphitheatre?
|Re: Please check this place...||H21||2/23/06 10:54 PM|
There is no placemark at the location you quote :
E 12º 42' 42,12'' N 43º 49' 42.6''About the "oval shaped tree mass", it may be the amphitheatre of Bevagnia. It has been given to me by Cali1981, but I never been there to check :
Is anyone can confirm or not this amphitheatre ?
|Re: Please check this place...||faustobriosa||2/24/06 2:38 AM|
Now I've posted the location to the "oval shaped tree mass", it's in Talacchio, about 100km North of Bevagnia and it's very similar to that one...
|Re: Please check this place...||H21||2/24/06 12:16 PM|
Your post and placemark are very interesting.
The "oval shaped tree mass" has the shape of an amphiteatre, and the dimensions (100m x 85m) are very close of others amphiteatres, for exemple Spello (115m x 85m) or Asisium (107m x 82m).
The town is not in fact Talacchio (an industrial area at the north-east) but the little medieval town of Colbordolo.
I tried to get information on the story of Colbordolo :
but they do not speak about roman buildings, just medieval "borgo" .
As you speak italian, you should send an e-mail to the town to get informations : comune.c...@provincia.ps.it

Can you update with the Roman amphitheater in Amman (where an Islamist killed one tourist and wounded several others today)?
|Re: 62 roman amphitheatres in high res||princeamir||9/6/06 10:33 AM|
I wonder why you didn't add the three amphitheatres in Amman and Jarash in Jordan to your list?
|Re: 62 roman amphitheatres in high res||SJATurney||9/11/06 8:30 AM|
It's important to remember that theatres and amphitheatres are not the same thing. The item shown in this thread in Amman is a theatre for the production of drama, not an amphitheatre for blood sports and games. Theatres are D shaped, whereas Amphitheatres are oval. There are many more theatres visible than amphitheatres, particularly in the eastern Empire, as the Roman blood sports were not as popular in the Greek world.
I myself have currently identified 60 amphitheatres that are covered with good resolution. There are many more in the areas as yet blurred and many more underground and therefore invisible.

Last year I visited Pula in Istria, Croatia.
There is an amazing amphitheatre there.
New to GE so don't know how to show it to you. But I can give the coordinates if that helps:
