|Onscreen Advertising Coming to Google Earth||Frank4||11/7/05 11:02 AM|
Just wrote a story about a new feature in the recently released Google Earth Beta V3.0.0739 at Google Earth Blog.
The new feature in the preferences window for the PLUS version of GE says:
This option reportedly doesn't appear in the new free version of GE.
What do you guys think?
Anyone see any advertising yet?

No I haven't. I really hope we don't get adverts on Google Earth. That would be enough to put me off it.

Hell yeah.Them freeloaders are getting it for free anyways.What is it going to hurt?
And with the more Money they bring in the more they can spend on Kentucky.

The release notes are out now for the new 3.0.0739 version. But, this is the only new feature I saw listed:
Interesting - has anyone seen an add in an information balloon yet?

When will V3.0.0739 be available to download? I've got a PLUS account and I've just updated mine (last 10mins) and it is V3.0.0693.

I don't believe the "Check for Update" option is working quite yet. But, if you go to earth.google.com and get Google Earth there you will get the new version.

Well they've added a new Complex tag Channel with attribute adwords, amongst several others There's also a Search tag now. Both appear to inherit from AbstractFeature and display in the Places panel.
I've added them to my docs, examples & tutorial if you want to play.

Just saw my first ad. Not too bad. Searching for a hotel and clicked on a Hotel placemark and the lower half of the description baloon was a green ad. I guess paying customers can turn them off and the free users won't have the option. Not very intrusive at all IMHO. Other than making the description baloon a little bigger, not that big of a difference.

If you or anyone else sees an ad again, could you please do a screen shot and post it here?
I'd also like to share it with the readers of the Google Earth Blog.

Here ya go..
|Re: Onscreen Advertising Coming to Google Earth||IanUK||11/8/05 6:33 AM|
Well, that's not so bad I suppose. I could put up with that. So long as they don't start putting flashing banners in every available vertical and horizontal space.
|Re: Onscreen Advertising Coming to Google Earth||beno||11/8/05 6:37 AM|
OK - just like the odd one you see around the BBS.
|Re: Onscreen Advertising Coming to Google Earth||xav||11/8/05 6:53 AM|
I don't see the advert in the placemark for that Hotel.
Could you post one where I could try the option "disable onscreen advertising"?
I know my song well before I start singing ...

>From an earlier post in this thread..
Position a metropolitan area in your view, then search for hotels, etc. Click on the placemarks returned, eventually you'll come across one of the adverts. At least for now(?) they seem to appear at random- as noted in the Release Notes.

I tried browing for 15mins around New York without any success...
Perhaps it realises that I live in the UK?

Thanks for posting this screenshot esterrett! I've written a new entry commenting on this type of ad and shared your photo at the Google Earth Blog. And, I gave you credit for the discovery.
By the way, if anyone sees any different kind of ads, please take a screen shot and share it with us here.
|Re: Onscreen Advertising Coming to Google Earth||Frank4||11/8/05 12:05 PM|
No, according to Google only a random sample of people who log into the Primary Database (when you start your Google Earth) will get to see the random ads. So, your chances are pretty small of seeing the ads right now. I have tried restarting GE dozens of times over the last several days without seeing them.

Now if only we could get rid of

Image (c) 2005 DigitalGlobe
Who cares about them(except DigitalGlobe)
Google is evil.

I don't mind ads, as long Google keeps expanding GE's image database.

Thanks for sharing. There haven't been very many reports of people seeing these ads. It must be pretty darn rare. I've been looking for over a month and haven't seen one yet myself.
