Are we allowed to make a minecraft server on a Google fiber connection? Ibrahim Khan 3/19/13 3:01 PM
I was wondering if we were allowed to host a minecraft server on Google fiber with out asking for special permission.

Does this mean I can't?

Hi Ibrahim,

Please allow me to point you to our FAQs on our main site in regards to your question.
If you search under "servers" you will see the following message:

"Our Terms of Service prohibit running a server. However, use of applications such as multi-player gaming, video-conferencing, home security and others which may include server capabilities but are being used for legal and non-commercial purposes are acceptable and encouraged."

I also sent you a private email, in case you would like to discuss this further (I could not find any additional contact info such as phone number under your forum registered email) .

Kindly,

I believe the Terms of Use or Service, whichever it is, say that without written permission from google they cannot host servers. How does someone obtain "written permission"?

I'll assume that since it is a residential connection which is also shared, they certainly wouldn't want anyone hogging the bandwidth, I find it ridiculous, since not all applications are high bandwidth. Google fiber really needs some commercial applications, and they really should be competitive, not $5000+ a month range for just a dedicated gigabit line.

Hello Kaiser,

Please note that each Google Fiber connection gets its dedicated bandwidth which is not affected by the overall network load.

In addition per earlier post:
"...use of applications such as multi-player gaming, video-conferencing, home security and others which may include server capabilities but are being used for legal and non-commercial purposes are acceptable and encouraged."

Then I fail to see the purpose to restrict usage, but of course if used illegally then I see why it is in place. If it is dedicated bandwidth, why should the price differ from a business customer to residential, same services, can handle the same bandwidth.

So does this mean we can run servers or not? I own a somewhat large Minecraft server, and another smallish one bought from someplace else and I wish to transfer to my home, and host a handful of tiny ones for my friends from my network. Would I be allowed to host my servers on my network with Google Fiber?

Hi Carter,

As long as they are not used for commercial purposes or illegal activities, owning Minecraft servers does not constitute a violation of the Google Fiber terms of service.

I think it should be made more clear to customers that if servers are used for commercial and/or illegal activity are strictly prohibited. Rather than stating hosting servers, that may in fact be for personal use, such as an HP Home server, or remote desktop are strictly prohibited.

Hello Kaiser,

Providing a small business product in qualified fiberhoods is within our plans but the details of such offering are not yet available.
Please stay tuned for more updates on this soon. We post all the latest updates on our blog: googlefiberblog.blogspot.com .

I just wish google fiber would be available in more locations, hanging fiber cables on power lines takes too long though, inefficient.

When Fiber comes to Austin and I have the money for it, I'd like to get a small business plan.

Okay I don't care about GFiber anymore.
