How do I turn off the pushpins while retaining the label? Todd Mitchell 5/11/12 2:21 PM

I would like to identify locations by text label only, for example "51%," and not pushpins and text.  The default of pushpins and text being displayed is unnecessarily busy.  (Edward Tufte calls this "chartjunk" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chartjunk .)  One can set the scale of the pushpins to 0 (by selecting one, Get Info>Style,Color), but this is not practical if you have a large number of pushpins.  Thank you.

Fortunately this is not hard to do. There are two methods that I know of for removing the icon and keeping the labels. First, you can open the properties of the placemark and click on the push pin in the upper right. This should bring up a dialog box where you can change the icon. Down at the bottom of this dialog there is a button that says "no Icon" click it. Then click ok and ok again now you have a label with no icon.
The second method is to again open properties and click on the style tab. you will see two setting one for the label and one for the icon. dont change the icon size but change the opacity to 100 click ok. Again you will have only a label. If you want to do this to a group of placemarks, put them all in a folder and go to the folder properties and use one of the two methods above. That will make the change for all the placemarks in the folder.

Hope this helps.
