Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 cdysthe 4/20/11 11:21 AM
i'm running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 x64. It installs and runs fine, but the fonts look very bad, almost unreadable. What could the problem be?

You can see a screenshot of it here:

Same problem, using Ubuntu 11.04 beta2 32 bit version, same font
Tried to set with qtconfig the fonts, but keep the same result.
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 cdysthe 4/21/11 2:15 PM
I tried qtconfig as well. No go. Oh well, we'll have to wait until enough people have the problem and hope for a fix.

Same issue here. GE 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 beta 2.
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 rmtk313 4/22/11 8:46 AM
It is a long-standing problem of the Qt library Google Earth uses. If your language is not English, you cannot see any character at all.
We need to replace the Qt libraries as well as some other files to prevent segfault:

1. "Good" Qt libraries from Debain Sqeeze (version 4.6.3), including libQtCore.so.4, libQtGui.so.4, libQtNetwork.so.4, libQtWebKit.so.4, libphonon.so.4
2. Plugins folder containing libqgif.so and libqjpeg.so from Google Earth 5.2
3. libfreeimage.so.3 from Ubuntu Maverick (version 3.13.1)

Paste all the files above into the Google Earth folder to replace the existing ones, then add a line "export LD_PRELOAD=libfreeimage.so.3" before the line "exec "./googleearth-bin" "$@"" in file googleearth.
Now you may get a clear and elegant interface.

It took me more than 5 hours to find the solution. I hope it helps.

I have all the files packed.
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 mrsoccermom 4/23/11 1:17 PM
I tried similar file replacements on Mandriva 2010.1.  There were additional dependencies to libfreeimage.so.3 (which wasn't available to `urpmi` on my 64-bit system).

I got GE to come up, and the fonts were correct, but a lot of other things broke.  Imagery didn't line up with coastlines; some images didn't even load; when I zoomed it, image boundaries weren't aligned.  Whenever it tried to render a photo (either Panoramio or one in a Wikipedia link) it segfaulted from libqjpeg.so.

Reverted to crummy fonts. :-(
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 MrF1022 4/23/11 10:12 PM
On Ubuntu 11.04 the easiest way to fix this is to install the MS TrueType font package by running:

sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

I had to logout and log back in even after the font cache was updated...probably something with the new Compiz/Unity UI.
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 cdysthe 4/24/11 3:49 AM
Installing the MS TTF fonts worked! Google Earth is now looking good and working flawlessly. Thank you MrF1022!

Thanks a lot...
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 dmig 5/17/11 4:25 AM
mtk313, I found simplier solution:
1) go to /opt/google/earth/free
2) rm -rf libcurl.so.4 libGLU.so.1 libnss_mdns4_minimal.so.2 libQtCore.so.4 libQtGui.so.4 libQtNetwork.so.4 libQtWebKit.so.4 # we will use system libraries instead of these ones
3) edit googleearth, add line "export LD_PRELOAD=libfreeimage.so.3" before line 'LD_LIBRARY_PATH=.:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH ./googleearth-bin "$@"'
4) copy libfreeimage.so.3 and plugins/ from http://goo.gl/GxLQw (and libphonon.so.4, if running on x86_64) to /opt/google/earth/free

Now GE 6 doesn't crash and looks native.

but in this way i am unable to see 360 cities(spherical panorama)

@dmig--At last, Finally!  A solution which works for me on Mandriva 2010.0!  Many, many thanks!  360 Cities also works for me with this solution. :-D

It seem that on my Mandrive 2010.0 system, dmig's solution doesn't extend to Flash in the built-in GE browser.  I don't often use the built-in browser, but when I went to an earthquake page at usgs.gov, it rendered the page, then a second or two later, I received:

@dmig:

When I use your solution, it mostly works well. Fonts look terrific. However, now the x, +, and - markers for the Layers and Places trees and selectors are missing. This makes navigating these tricky, and it's very difficult to know what's enabled. Any insights here?

@diti1:

I don't think this is the same problem. The fonts in GE6 aren't antialiased. I tried the workarounds mentioned in this thread, and got nice-looking fonts, but a few other elements disappeared. In the post you linked, there seems to be a much bigger problem.
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 diti1 5/26/11 3:14 AM
sudo zypper in cabextract
wget http://www.freetechie.com/upload/font/fetchmsttfonts.sh
chmod a+x fetchmsttfonts.sh
sudo sh fetchmsttfonts.sh
google-earth -fn -xos4-terminus-medium-r-normal--12-120-72-72-c-60-iso8859-9

When I do this GE6 works perfectly on my system  -> Suse11.4 KDE4.6.3.

Who wants to download terminus font -> http://terminus-font.sourceforge.net

@dmig:

This is the ONLY solution that worked for me on Ubuntu Natty / GE6.  This was a major time waster to have to go to these lengths to solve something which makes GE6 unusable in my view.  Thanks very much for this fix.
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 mikefreeman 6/6/11 11:24 AM
Again, none of these solutions works on my Mint 11 (same as Ubuntu Natty) system. Either they have no effect on the anti-aliasing of fonts (dit1 and MrF1022), or render all other GUI elements (tab frames, checkboxes, etc.) invisible (dmig and rmtk313).
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 jimtuv 6/10/11 6:24 AM
I had to unistall and reinstall the mscorefonts to get it to work. like this

sudo apt-get remove ttf-mscorefonts-installer

then

sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

after I rebooted and all was good. Nothing worked before this. It must have been that I already had the mscorefonts before adding google earth. The only way to get them to reconfigure was to un-install then reinstall.
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 Tonyburke 6/22/11 11:49 PM
I've found that the best way to install Google Earth on Ubuntu 11.04 is to firstly install the : "ttf-mscorefonts-installer" via your synaptic package manager and then install Google earth from the same application. Once installed you'll have no problems with those screwy Fonts,
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 mikefreeman 7/12/11 3:31 PM
Has anyone yet found a way to get smooth fonts and native-looking GUI without losing other elements on GE6 with Linux Mint 11 yet? GE5 on Mint 10 worked perfectly and looked beautiful, but this looks like a Windows 95 app.
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 gaxi 8/11/11 3:11 AM
A reboot after
  sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
does it!

Excellent solution.  Fonts are anti-aliased and look good.  Makes GoogleEarth look great on my 11.04 Kubuntu AMD_x64 install!

Hello,

Linux noob here. Just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 and installed Google Earth. Fonts look awful, barely readable. What to do? Would any of the things suggested above work for me?
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 zephonic 12/3/11 3:14 AM
I tried this.....

sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

.......but did not work for me.

I don't have any problems with 360 spherical panoramas according to dmig's advise, try 11.10

I used "googleearth_5.1.3533.1731-0medibuntu1_i386.deb" for ubuntu 11.04 and it looks fine. Has anyone reported the problem to google?
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 tbkr 2/19/12 4:11 PM
Any other suggestions? I'm now at Ubuntu 11.10 and still have the illegible fonts problem.

ttf-mscorefonts-installer was already installed.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

found no packages to upgrade

What next to try?
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 Сowa 3/4/12 7:27 AM
I had example when you do not need MS fonts.

On the same system (Ubuntu 10.04 Gnome, Nvidia card and driver, all software versions are up to date from official system repositories):
One account - I done "do not remeber what" and it just works now.
Second account - it do not works, even I tried to google and more...

The problem is more complicated than only fonts presence.

It seems there is something broken with Qt, X-Server and fonts substitution. It seems it tries to substitude X-Server's native fonts or else.
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 Teemu Leisti 3/26/12 9:24 AM
I've just installed Xubuntu 11.10 on my 64-bit machine, and downloaded and installed the 64-bit .deb package, and had the same awful font problem.

I followed the instructions on this page, which solved the problem: http://omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/01/how-to-make-google-earth-look-native-in-ubuntu

To paraphrase those instructions, do the following:

  • In a terminal emulator, give the following commands:
    • cd /opt/google/earth/
    • sudo rm libcurl.so.4 libGLU.so.1 libnss_mdns4_minimal.so.2 libQtCore.so.4 libQtGui.so.4 libQtNetwork.so.4 libQtWebKit.so.4
  • Use any editor to edit file /opt/google/earth/googleearth -- but you have to do it as a root, so for instance, the following command from a terminal emulator would work:
    • sudo nano /opt/google/earth/googleearth
  • Now add the line
    export LD_PRELOAD=libfreeimage.so.3
as the second last line of file googleearth, and save the file.
  • Download the file libfreeimage.so.3 from link http://ubuntuone.com/2f5PJTu25GqZG3Plmy5VjI, and save it in directory ~/Downloads /opt/google/earth/
  • If your machine is 64-bit, download the file libphonon.so.4 from link http://ubuntuone.com/3MfWIy4xSNB7NOJLbBXNsA, and save it in directory /opt/google/earth/
  • In a terminal emulator, give the following commands (the ones concerning libphonon.so.4 only if your machine is 64-bit):
    • cd /opt/google/earth/
    • sudo cp ~/Downloads/libfreeimage.so.3 .
    • sudo cp ~/Downloads/libphonon.so.4 .
    • sudo chmod a+x libfreeimage.so.3
    • sudo chmod a+x libphonon.so.4
    • sudo apt-get install libcurl4-openssl-dev libqtwebkit4
That worked for me.

Google really could do a better job of testing this Linux installation package before releasing it. I've grown used to quite high-quality software from Google, and this is unlike them.
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 Teemu Leisti 3/26/12 9:34 AM
Aaargh! I wish one could edit these entries after posting them. I noticed a couple of errors. Forget the instructions above; here's the corrected version:

  • First, close Google Earth if it's running.
  • Now add the line
    export LD_PRELOAD=libfreeimage.so.3
as the second last line of file googleearth -- that is, just before the line LD_LIBRARY_PATH=.:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH ./googleearth-bin "$@"  -- and save the file.
  • Download the file libfreeimage.so.3 from link http://ubuntuone.com/2f5PJTu25GqZG3Plmy5VjI, and save it in directory ~/Downloads
  • If your machine is 64-bit, download the file libphonon.so.4 from link http://ubuntuone.com/3MfWIy4xSNB7NOJLbBXNsA, and save it in directory ~/Downloads
  • In a terminal emulator, give the following commands (the ones concerning libphonon.so.4 only if your machine is 64-bit):
    • cd /opt/google/earth/
    • sudo cp ~/Downloads/libfreeimage.so.3 .
    • sudo cp ~/Downloads/libphonon.so.4 .
    • sudo chmod a+x libfreeimage.so.3
    • sudo chmod a+x libphonon.so.4
    • sudo apt-get install libcurl4-openssl-dev libqtwebkit4
  • Restart Google Earth. The fonts should now look normal.
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 joelprestonsmith 4/5/12 11:51 AM
I ran these instructions in Terminal, then launched GE6. No change in the fonts. They're still terrible. I tried another route--removing the TT fonts, then reinstalling them. Also didn't work. I'm on Ubuntu 11.04, which seems to work for some, but not others. I'm fairly new to U, and to the command line, which means I have no real idea as to why the preceeding fixes work for some on 11.04 but not others. I do appreciate the advice, though, that's listed here.

As for the recommended website, it's in BULGARIAN. Even worse than trying to decipher how to get GE to show readable fonts in Ubuntu.

Tried this on Google Earth 6.2.5905 (beta) on Fedora 16_x64 - Google Earth doesn't crash (it wasn't crashing anyway), but still doesn't look native and still has the appalling quality fonts (I've tried all the other font fixes too, but alas no joy.)

I have had the same problem over several Linux upgrades for approx 7 years. - One would think that if they were half interested they could have fixed it years ago. -- I have long simply factored it out of "things to do on the computer". Now, today, on the news we are told they want to sell a tablet with their name on it, and a Google operating system in it. -- Who are they kidding. -- They can't even get this right. -- Let them do it, and face the likes of the Consumer affairs regulators when it all goes Pear shaped and like this, they can't fix it. Where there is money involved, there will be blood!
Re: Fonts looks bad, almost unreadable, running Google Earth 6 on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 dmig 10/18/12 1:29 AM
Last version, which can be fixed is 6.1!

Version 6.2 uses modified Qt, which is incompatible with system libraries. Forcing it to use system Qt libs will end up with symbol lookup error: ./libmoduleframework.so: undefined symbol: _Z34QBasicAtomicInt_fetchAndAddOrderedPVii

So, search the web for google earth 6.1.0.5001 package -- this one is latest for this moment.

Also, I'd recommend adding line export LC_NUMERIC=C after export LD_PRELOAD=libfreeimage.so.3, that will prevent KML files corruption on some locales.
