How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? greenspade 5/3/12 2:40 PM
Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Jhaus 5/3/12 6:11 PM
Also wish Drive had the ability to search within a folder (including sub-folders too).

Was able to (sort of) work around this: (i) click on "Settings" (the gear icon) and (ii) select "Temporarily use the classic look".

Jhaus,
Thanks for the tip on the Classic Look Setting. Hopefully this feature will be added to the standard offering.

Need this to badly. And the ability to search in subfolder to.
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Matt-GDrive User 7/26/12 12:49 PM
Does Google have any plans to add this feature?
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Xavier83 9/27/12 11:13 PM
I do not have a solution other than going to the old interface, but I also think that it is an important feature.
Is there a place where we can vote for this feature ?
It would be a step back if we hadn't have it any more in the future!!!
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? tsolignani 9/28/12 12:47 AM
Some workaround: if you are on a mac you can get to the folder within which you want to costrain your search and then use spotlight.

On windows there should be some similar tools.

This is the way I do it actually, but I guess that they should add to the web interface too.

Likewise. That's a stupid omission Google! Glad I can go back to the old interface still.
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Elizatwor 10/17/12 6:16 AM
Me too! We have a wiki we'd like to put into google docs, but if we can't restrict the search to just that folder it will find so much stuff as to be unusable. We're even willing to overlook google's inablility to search for non-word text strings, but the unrestricted range of search has killed it. This would be an important option. Gmail can search "in:label", why not drive?
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? sunyataivarupam 10/20/12 1:37 PM
Elizcsps:  I just tried using the "in:label" operator you just mentioned to search Drive, and it actually seems to have worked! Could this feature have been added recently but not announced or documented?  Is anyone else noticing this working?
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Matt-GDrive User 10/21/12 3:27 PM
Suny - Can you please explain how this "operator" works and provide an example? Thanks!
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Elizatwor 10/22/12 9:21 AM
I am trying to reproduce what you say works for you, but I cannot get it to work.
In my docs/drive I have a label named 'wireless' with some documents in it, one of which has the word 'senior' in it.
If I search all my docs for 'senior', I get lots of hits.
If I select the wireless folder and search for 'senior' I get all the same hits.
If I search for label:wireless senior, I get no results.
If I search for in:wireless senior, I get no results.

Can you tell exactly how to make it work?

Thanks.

Eliz.

I had the same problem.

Suny - can you please explain? Thanks.
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? TheMathGuy 10/24/12 12:28 AM
A clumsy workaround which works for me (under Firefox):
  1. Click on folder so you are only viewing within the folder you want to search
  2. The URL in your browser location bar will change to something like:
    https://drive.google.com/?ui=4&authuser=0#folders/0B6AzksONG.....
  3. Copy the text from the URL which comes after "folders/"
  4. Insert that text instead of THELONGFOLDERID into the following URL string:
    https://drive.google.com/?ui=4&authuser=0#advanced-search/q=dummy&view=2&parent=THELONGFOLDERID
  5. When you go to the URL you have just constructed, you can then use the search box to search inside that folder --- for convenience, I suggest you bookmark the URL if you do such searches often
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? TheMathGuy 10/24/12 1:13 AM
Security note:
about bookmarking the URL --- I cannot know exactly what are the security implications of revealing that long folder ID to a non-trusted party, so I recommend only bookmarking those kinds of URLS on non-shared computers.
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Elizatwor 10/24/12 5:47 AM
Wow. I have to hand it to you, this actually works. You can't actually see the content of the folder before you enter the search, so you have to be flipping back and forth between tabs, but it is possible to do this.

I'll definitely post this in our solutions folder for anyone who wants to try it. I don't think this is usable enough for us to try to sell it to the users, but just the fact that it is possible makes me hopeful that Google will eventually make a Lab to do that.

Thank you so much for sharing!

Eliz
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Elizatwor 10/24/12 6:03 AM
P.S. it works in Chrome 22.0.1229.94, too!
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? fatpug 10/24/12 2:19 PM
This still doesn't search inside the sub-folders.
To search within a folder, it's easier to temporarily switch back to the old layout by clicking the setting button. When using the old layout, search will default to the current folder only. No need for creating bookmarks or copy&paste..etc.
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? TheMathGuy 10/25/12 1:40 PM
Personally, I don't expect the possibility to temporarily switch back to the old layout to remain available indefinitely. Hopefully Google will understand the importance of this feature and add it properly to the "new look". It was important for me to post this information not because it is currently the easiest way to search within a folder, but rather because, at some time in the future, it may become the only possible way to search within a folder. (It was discovered via comparison with the "old view" URLs, but if the "old view" goes away, my post will remain the only documentation.)

Of course, once the "old view" goes away, there is no guarantee that my unofficial and undocumented workaround will continue to be maintained by Google.
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Matt-GDrive User 10/25/12 6:52 PM
Personally, this would be a reason to cancel my Google Drive subscription and move to Dropbox or Box.
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Elizatwor 10/26/12 9:29 AM
Well, we're committed to Gmail so we might as well take advantage of the rest of the apps.

Actually our goal is to find a new host for our private docuwiki. Initially Google seemed like a good idea and its paid for, but there are problems. You can't search for strings of less than 4 characters, and it has problems searching for things it doesn't recognize as words. And not being able easily to restrict the search to a folder (even without including subfolders) is a break point, since every search brings up hundreds of unrelated documents. So Google drive, at the moment, is useless as a wiki.
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? rodgersmc 11/5/12 1:34 PM
+1. I've been missing this feature since the change to the new look and periodically look around for a solution... Still seems to be simplest to switch back to the old way, but like some others I a) don't trust this will stick around forever and b) find this clumsy and needless.

Google: this is easy to fix. Either let us use operators or make a drop down menu that lets us select "search within selected folder."
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Xavier83 12/18/12 9:57 AM
Now we cannot switch back to the old inteface any more.
Is there a solution in the meanwhile ?

Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Xavier83 1/22/13 5:31 AM
I am very surprised that there are not more persons concerned by this issue. I think without the possibility of searching within a folder, folders are almost useless : why should we bother of classifying our documents into folders if we cannot search into it ?

For those, who do not think that it is a problem, please explain why ?
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Jacques Paquin 1/24/13 10:06 AM
We are looking to do this also..

Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? MCLipsco 1/25/13 1:44 AM
To be fair: there is not an easy way to do this in Dropbox's web version. It searches ALL of your Dropbox folders.

Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Mark B (AEC) 2/6/13 10:50 AM
This is a glaring oversight in my opinion.  Searching within a specific directory and its subfolders is a de facto standard for any file system regardless of where it is situated; locally or the cloud.
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Aaron Lewis 2/9/13 10:41 PM
I need to limit searches to folders and its subfolders too.  Also, I wonder why, after installing Drive to my Windows machines, the contents are not indexed, and I cannot use the Windows search to find my info.
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Olivier Travers 2/11/13 3:46 AM
This workaround makes sense, since the parent folder ID is exposed in the API:

It is unfathomable why that functionality is no longer exposed through Google Drive's own web UI though, especially when that used to be available. You would think Google should produce the best web interface to its own cloud file storage service. This sort of arbitrary loss of functionality is a big drawback of (most) web applications.

Ironically Google Developer's search interface does have scoped search: https://developers.google.com/search/results?q=parents&p=%2Fdrive. Even a Google web query can be scoped with the site: advanced search syntax.
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? MCLipsco 2/12/13 4:02 AM
Ironically, you can search for "folders" themselves via the pulldown search menu in Google Drive. To find the "Articles" folder you can search for "folders named" "Articles" for example...
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Jay Cohen 2/12/13 8:31 AM
I can't understand why this functionality is being slowly taken away.  In the old version of Google Docs, we were able to search within a specific folder like in gmail.  Then I could only search within a folder using the folder view (only allowed me to view one folder but that was OK).  Within the last few months, I can't even do that!  Yet this functionality still exists on my android phone within my drive app.  What is going on???   I really need this feature in my browser!  Have we heard from Google?
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Steve Hanson 2/12/13 11:31 PM
I wish I had an answer.

Please, Google, get this fixed! If I use SkyDrive, my files are indexed on my PC, but the SkyDrive app on my Droid has no search feature (huge oversight by Microsoft). This is one reason I prefer Google Drive, but it REALLY bothers me that Google Drive is not indexed on my PC. This FORCES me to have to search using the web, but it is difficult because I cannot narrow my search down to specific folders/subfolders.

Another thing I like about Google Drive is that it will locate text within a PDF, whereas Windows and Dropbox will not.

Sorry for this rant, but this is so frustrating and the fix is so simple!!! If the SkyDrive app gets a search feature, I’m going back—even if Drive searches in PDFs.
Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Olivier Travers 2/13/13 4:29 AM
The other aggravating thing in the use case described by Steve, is that searching Google Drive from the web is oblivious to the local copy of the files, so you end up downloading Google's copy of a PDF each time you click on a search result. But the very point of Google Drive is that I already have a local version of that same file!

I think that this used to work for me, but I can't seem to get it to work now.   Can someone please check to see if this workaround still works.  Thanks!

Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? Leonard1 5/3/13 4:34 AM
The workaround with the URL still works, Jay.

HOWEVER, the search parameter (q=dummy in your case) is not allowed to be empty, else it will redirect you to the "normal" URL, and then the search is not limited to the parent folder anymore *sniff*.

The best workaround I have found to have an empty search is to add a SPACE in the parameter.
A space in "URL-Language" is "%20", so the URL with an "empty" search string (which is simulated by a space) would be:
https://drive.google.com/?ui=4#advanced-search?q=%20&parent=THELONGFOLDERID

where THELONGFOLDERID needs to be replaced by the id of your folder.

This is no longer a solution.  I can't find the "Temporarily use the classic look" button.

It's stupid that Google removed one of the most useful features of GoogleDocs

I agree, what the hell is google thinking, the product was purchased based, amongst other things, the legendary google search engine and one of the biggest complaints our users have (and now me too), is that they cannot sort like they used to with MS plus they cannot find documents. Way to go Google, give MS a leg up, help them to beat you, shoot yourself in the foot. How do I get this message to Google Executives, does anyone have the CEO's personal email?  Once upon a time I had a gripe with Verizon and found the boss's personal work email address. Naturally he doesn't monitor it but his high-up minions do and I received a personal email back saying they would fix my problem and they did.  It is clear that no one with any influence is monitoring these forums or they would do something about it other than say it is on the gazillion item long wish list.

This is still missing, for anyone else still waiting on this, it's been requested in a feedback topic (rather than a support question) at http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/drive/9YJNsdr0mMY , probably would be more helpful to post on that thread to request it get incorporated asap

I wrote an app that does this :)

Jist select a folder then enter your search terms....

Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? David.Latapie 9/19/13 2:08 AM
Did not work for me (I used a search operator to know which files a specific person has access to in a given folder - to:so...@example.com)

How do I remove the access authorisation for your script?

Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? David.Latapie 9/19/13 2:10 AM
Update: go to https://accounts.google.com/b/0/IssuedAuthSubTokens, look for "google-drive-search-by-folder" and remove authorisation.

Too bad it did not work, because it is quite an interesting script (shame on Google for not implementing it)

Re: How do you limit a search in Google Drive to a particular folder? David.Latapie 9/19/13 2:31 AM
Update: well, the scrip still has access to my data... :(
