how to achieve the earlier "all documents sorted by last modified" view? krbj 4/25/12 3:19 AM

Perhaps the absolute core function of Docs for me was the list view where I could see all documents (whether created by me or shared with me, and whether in a folder/label or not) sorted in descending "last modified" order and also with the "last modified time" and "last modifier" listed. I can't understand how to achieve this, or even something remotely similar, with Google Drive. Can you help me? Or is this a missing functionality that will be seen to? I know I can still use the "classic look" temporarily, but I'd like to know how I can do this when that option is gone.

To be clear:
* I do not want to have separate lists for my own vs shared items.
* I do not want to sort by the "share date" or "last opened by me".
* I do not want items in folders/labels to be hidden from the list.
* I want to see who last modified the document, and when that was.

Thanks for any help!

And this is something I would like to see in the Android client as well as in the standard browser interface!

I'd like to add, if I print things from Google Cloud Print to Google Docs (Drive), it used to appear at the top of the list.   Now, it no longer appears.  I have to search for the document I printed and hope I know what the title was.

This aspect is not as good as it used to be.

Thanks.

Hi krbj,
If you click on More in the left pane and choose Activity, I believe this will allow you to view sorted by "last modified." I hope that helps!

I never used this but are you saying whenever you printed something (without edited the Doc, but accessing) the Doc would appear at the top of a sorted list, probably sorted by "last accessed?"

It is currently possible to sort by "last opened by me."  Does that help?  You can access this by clicking on the sort button in the upper right of the Drive web app.

If you use Google Cloud print (with Chrome), one of the options is to print to Google Docs.   It used to appear in the 'Home' folder.   Now it's not visible anywhere.   If I search for it, it appears.   'Last Opened by Me' or 'Last Edited by Me' have no effect, I guess because I didn't create it with Google Docs, per se.

Interesting, I've never used that.  So what types of files were you trying to do this with?  Did it convert files to a pdf and/or Google Docs file types?

Is there some way to get this functionality of the Drive application for Android too? Specifically including "last edited by ?" information in the list?

Why did Google move this to the activity panel and what is the point of the front page now. The sort by "last modified" option now does nothing like what it is supposed to do and has many missing files.

Hi ben_b,
Can you provide more details about any bugs you noticed with the "last modified" sort?  I am currently not seeing any problems.  Can you provide your OS and internet browser and version as well?

I'll piggyback onto the original question, since it's been silent for a couple of weeks, and since I came here with pretty much the same question.

In the old Google Documents, if you sorted by "last modified" date, you could get the most recently modified documents to sort to the top regardless of how they were labelled or foldered.

In the current Google Drive, if you sort by "last modified" date, you get only those files that appear to be in the "current directory". Granted, that more closely mimics the behavior of a local hard drive, but it seems to violate the principle of least surprise.

The "More" | "Activity" link does more or less do what the original Google Documents did, but that's almost as well hidden as email contacts now.

I agree with WalkSoftly, the sort by "last modified" that included all docs in all folders was much more useful than than the current way Drive sorts for last modified, which does not include recently modified docs that are organized in subfolders.

One of the most useful things about Docs for me is using them collaboratively, so no longer seeing that a collaborator has recently modified a doc unless I happen to be in the correct folder makes Drive far less useful for us than Docs was. Now I see I can probably get that info from the very buried Activity option. Most of my many collaborators will never find that, and are likely missing changes they need to be reviewing because of the change.

the only two options i have under "sort by" are "last opened by me" and "last edited by me," even on shared documents (where I would not necessarily be the last person who edited the document). i'm using a galazy nexus, my browser is the 4.1.1-424425 version.

Hi KatDrew,
Are you using the Google Drive app on your phone?  I'm confused by your browser version.

Cheers,
