| Google Drive causing Core Animation errors in Mac OS X Mavericks' Finder | magnamaduin | 17/03/16 16:25 | Starting on March 12, several Mac OS X Mavericks users (some using 10.9.2, others using 10.9.5) noticed a bizarre behavior in which the Finder stopped redrawing the desktop and failed to draw the contents of folders when they are opened. When opening a folder, the top and bottom bars will render and function normally, but the contents will either be a blank space, or just display the area previously on the screen. Sometimes this will capture the rectangular zoom of the folder opening animation as shown here: http://imgur.com/535HFoX This takes a minute or so to kick in if Google Drive is launched because it is one of the user account's Login Items. The Console shows several Core Animation errors during this process, including one that occurs specifically when opening folders.Only by quitting Google Drive and relaunching the Finder can normal operation be restored and maintained. It seems that some update or change to Google Drive that occurred on or sometime shortly before March 12 caused a compatibility issue. As there's nothing on or near that date in the changelog for the client program, was there something that happened server-side in that timeframe?EDIT: entirely pointless attempts to add line breaks for easier reading. |

I apologize about the line breaks, or lack there of. It sounds like you did a great job investigating this issue with Google Drive affecting your OSX finder. I would recommend forwarding your information to the google developers. To do this:
Once submitted, your feedback will be placed in a database that the google developers will look over. Best of luck to you! -Tyler M |

I suffer from it, tried a couple of times fixes within osx finder like delete and rebuiling the .plist but indeed anytime the drive app is launched it appears again. Very frustrating to use my Mac that way so until this is solved I disable google drive on my Mac. Such a pity as the combination of osx spotlight search functionality and google drive exchange with my colleagues is very powerful. |

| Re: Google Drive causing Core Animation errors in Mac OS X Mavericks' Finder | magnamaduin | 14/04/16 11:20 | Still no word from the developers. I haven't seen a software update, either.Closest thing to a solution I have:After jiggering around with Google Drive's present functionality, I discovered that "pausing" it in its menu and then relaunching the Finder had the same effect as quitting Google Drive and relaunching the Finder. This suggests to me that the problem is happening with one of Google Drives processes that results in a Core Animation call.So I delved deeper into Google Drive's preferences looking for things that could trigger visual reactions in the Finder. In the Advanced tab of the Google Drive preferences, I unckecked the box for "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" and unpaused Google Drive. The Finder error came back after a minute, as is its custom.I went back and unchecked the next option, "Show confirmation when removing items from shared folders." and relaunched the Finder while leaving Google Drive unpaused. In testing, this resulted in more than 10 minutes of stability.I then tried rechecking "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" to test if the problem was just the other feature, and that was not the case (I even got a legitimate Finder crash for my trouble). I was able to verify that unckecking both options seems to keep Core Animation happy, though I've yet to double down and return Google Drive to my startup items. |
