I think it would be nice to shortcut a specific doc or a specific folder to the Android home screen. Gmail lets you shortcut labels, and Books lets you shortcut specific books. This would provide consistency but is also a needed step.

Right now users can make docs offline enabled on their desktops and mobile devices.
Google provided Scratchpad which sync to Docs in a "Scratchpad" folder.
Once a user makes these files offline enabled or their different devices all they need is quick access and pushed updates.
Let us shortcut docs to the homescreen and Google has the first step at a true cloud office suite.

Slightly off topic: Notebook went into Docs. Scratchpad is an extension of Docs. Tasks in Calendar is sort of oddly in between. Google provides the API to sync Tasks (I use taskos on Android), but it's sort of neglected otherwise. Would be nice for it to be brought into the fold as a new special Doc type.

Create Tasks using Google Drive. See Shopping List example  http://support.google.com/drive/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2429894

View files offline  http://support.google.com/drive/bin/search.py?hl=en&gs_l=partner.3...2755.5459.0.5806.9.8.1.0.0.0.192.1273.0j8.8.0.gsnos%2Cn%3D13..0.0.no5ZuEQR7Ek&query=offline&oq=offline&ctx=en:searchbox&aq=f

If you are using Google Search on your Android device > tap G Search icon in apps > tap Menu > tap Search Settings > tap Searchable Items > enable Drive > tap Home

Upload images from your Android Gallery to Google Drive to store, view and share images in Google Drive. On Android > tap Drive triangle app icon (replaced Google Docs) > to the left of the upper right magnifier glass click on the document icon >  tap Upload (scroll down in landscape view to Upload) > My Gallery > tap desired image > OK On Android > tap Drive triangle app icon (replaced Google Docs) > to the left of the upper right magnifier glass click on the document icon >  tap Upload (scroll down in landscape view to Upload) > My Gallery > tap desired image > OK

How is your answer even the slightest bit helpful for answering this question?  I'm so confused, your answer is so categorically unhelpful.

@acidboy

The original Post asks, Android shortcuts for Docs.

Google provides Feedback forms for Docs and its sister product Drive.

Your answer is not helpful. I can't create shortcut to the specific Drive doc on the homescreen. Even I place Drive shortcut (from widgets) on the homescreen and then select specific Drive doc, it will only open the Drive app, but not the specific doc.

Which version of Android are you using? I am able to create shortcuts directly to documents using the following steps. I've not attempted to create a shortcut to a folder, but I'll look into that.

I am using Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on my Verizon 4G Xoom.

  1. On the Android home screen, press the Applications icon.
  2. When the Applications are shown, select the Widgets tab at the top of the screen.
  3. Scroll until you find the "Drive shortcut" widget. Tap and hold the widget and then drop it on your home screen.
  4. In the My Drive list that appears after you drop the widget, select the desired document and click the Select button.

There are a few quirks to the shortcut, but it does at least provide the basic ability to have an icon on your home screen that opens a specific document.

Let me know your results. I'll see what I can find out about folders.

Just to note, when you select the "Drive shortcut" widget, make sure you select the one named "Drive shortcut". The "Drive" widget will just open up the My Drive list, but the "Drive shortcut" widget opens the specific document that I selected.
Re: Android shortcuts for Docs gkorobkov 11/2/12 12:40 AM
Thank you John.  Your advice was a little helpful. I'm using andriod 4.0.3 on Huawei MediaPad 7 tablet. I'm creating shortcut exactly how you describe. If doc placed in root folder in Drive I successfully created shortcut to the doc and it opened, but this happened only once. Any others shortcuts to docs in sub folders in Drive just open Drive itself, not the selected doc. Then I moved one doc (DocABC)(that successfully opend by  shortcut ) to the Note subfolder and other docs began to open successfully too, then i remove DocABC back to root folder and suddenly all docs stopped to open, shortcut  to any docs open only drive not the doc. Some docs have name in Russian char, so maybe this is the reason of failing to open doc. Another question is -does offline doc is required to create shortcut?
thanks. hope you can help me with this strange behavior of shortcuts
