Upload using drag and drop nop longer works with Safari on Mac OS Paul Y Gloess 4/17/12 7:20 AM

I am using Version 5.1.5 (6534.55.3) on Mac OS 10.6.8. Since very recently, drag and drop no longer works for uploading a file. It used to work perfectly. Anyone having this problem?

I can drag and drop fine, but all my uploads just sit at 0% forever.

<<all my uploads just sit at 0% forever.>> That would be problem number 6 in the classification developed under [1] based on reports on the forum. I do not know a good response to this problem, or to any other upload problem, but there is some standard advice: First of all, a user faced with an upload problem can always try to use a different browser; many of the problem manifestations depend on the browser. Second, a user can try to clear cache and cookies following the Help page [2]. Third, if the upload problem is associated with Internet Exporer (IE8 or IE9) then there is a recommendation to install Google Chrome Frame [3] if it is not possible to just use Google Chrome.

For reference by anyone else that has an upload problem, here is my classification. It may be a useful guide to give some precision to error reports.

1. Upload is disabled and a red X appears next to it.
2. Upload can't be used because the "files" option is missing; one sees only Settings and Learn More.
3. Upload gives a File option but it isn't active (no response when one clicks on it).
4. Upload starts, but it always says "error on page".
5. Upload starts, but it fails with a "Server rejected" error message.
6. Upload seems to start, but remains at 0%, nothing loads.
7. Upload fails for specific file extensions.
8. Upload fails with message “no upload methods available”.
9. Upload fails, never finishes, maybe restarts.
10. Upload destroys the collections structure.
11. Upload fails because Table not supported.
12. Upload corrupts the file name.

Hey Paul Y Gloess and Luke Johnson,

I'd like to look into this issue and need some more information.

Paul, what happens when drag and drop doesn't work?

Luke, what browser and operating system are you using?

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom:

I am using Safari Version 5.1.5 (6534.55.3) on Mac OS 10.6.8, on an iMac.

When I drag a local file to Safari Google docs middle pane (collection contents), the icon of the file is displayed with a green + sign in the middle, and the middle pane remains unchanged (blank). Then, while still dragging:
  • If I move out of Safari Google docs middle pane, the middle pane becomes yellow; furthermore, if I drop the item in its initial location (computer desktop in this case), the middle pane remains yellow; note that no dialogue window comes up as it should;
  • If I start over dragging the local file into the middle pane, it turns from yellow to blank;
  • Repeating this, if the middle pane was white, it becomes yellow while dragging and entering the middle pane, but returns to white if I drop the file in the middle pane, and nothing happens;
  • If I refresh the page under Safari, then the first dragging action of the file in the middle pane does not change the middle pane color (it remains blank), but the color changes to yellow while dragging the file out and remains yellow if I drop the item in its initial location (desktop).
I just tried on my MacBook Pro under Mac OS X Version 10.7.3 and Safari Version 5.1.5 (7534.55.3):  drag and drop no longer works for uploading a file.

I hope this report will help you.

Best regards,

   Paul Y Gloess

P.S.: With Google Chrome, and Firefox, drag and drop of a local file still works.

Hi Paul,

The drag-and-drop feature is only available in the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox. If you aren’t working in the latest version of Chrome or Firefox, you can click the Upload button and select Files... from the drop-down menu. Here's an article with more information.

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom:

But drag-and-drop used to work with Safari on Mac OS X (even with Lion) until last Friday. We could upload files this way (not folders).

Therefore, I do not understand what happened.

Thanks,

paul

It is weird that Safari support would be discontinued in this way.  I was also a happy drag & drop google docs user until it stopped working recently.  I use multiple google accounts via multiple browsers (a google recommended best practice) so the suggested workaround is not complete nor simple.  Was this due to a Google-doc change or an Apple Safari change?
