How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? Teresa - Docs & Drive Community Manager 11/17/11 12:09 PM

If you’ve ever browsed our Product Help Forums with the aim to find an answer to your question, you've probably seen the answers given to our users by our awesome Top Contributors. Curious in learning more about who they are and how to become one? Here are some FAQs:

Who are Top Contributors (TCs)?

Top Contributors are volunteers in our communities who like helping users and who are passionate about Google. They regularly post in Google product forums, helping users to answer their questions about our products. TCs have excellent product knowledge and respect for other users. Only the best of the best are invited to be a TC. Top Contributors are rock stars in our eyes!

What are the benefits of being a TC?

TCs are interested in learning about our products, which are constantly evolving. Answering other users’ questions is a good way to learn. In some circumstances, TCs may also contact Google employees or receive invitations to events organized by Google.

How can I become a Top Contributor?

You can become a Top Contributor by actively helping the users in the forum. Your answers should be consistently super-helpful, accurate, and friendly. You will enhance your chances of being invited to be a TC if your answers are selected as “Best Answers”. Therefore, it is important to post answers that are as close to solving the user’s problem as possible. A Google employee may reach out to you if he/she considers you as someone who might make a good TC volunteer. Note that not all active posters are good TC candidates; some active posters may not display all the qualities we're looking for and therefore will not be invited to become a TC.

How long will it take to become a TC?

It depends on how active you are in the forum and how helpful your answers are. It may take a few months for an active user to become a TC. Please note that participating as a TC is purely voluntary. Those who are invited to become TCs may drop out of the TC program at any time. Likewise, Google may decide not to keep someone in the program if, for example, he or she stops posting in the forum.

Our Top Contributors are what makes the Docs forum a great community. If you're interested in learning more about becoming a Top Contributor, feel free to post a comment and let me know!

Hi Teresa,

I'm interested in learning more.
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? tommylmiles 11/30/11 7:58 AM
Good Morning,

I am interested as well.
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? Gill 11/30/11 4:03 PM
As Teresa says "You can become a Top Contributor by actively helping the users in the forum. Your answers should be consistently super-helpful, accurate, and friendly." So, use the products a good deal, experiment with different browsers (and computers if you have the chance) until you feel you have got under the skin, and keep answering queries on the forum. Be aware that the products are constantly being updated, so keep your eyes on the various menus and options to see if there is anything new.

If you notice any changes that you think are bugs post them on the forum for the Guides like Teresa to take note of.

Be helpful and constructive, friendly and polite.

I note that you have not yet created a profile, which means you can't be contacted off-forum - you might want to consider this as sometimes Guides or TCs might want to discuss something privately with you.

Keep using and enjoying the products. Good luck :-)

Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? Gill 2/29/12 10:27 AM
I have to warn you that the time on the forum has a habit of becoming excessive! But I do enjoy helping people and trying to tease out problems.
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? dziegman 2/29/12 12:48 PM
Agreed, Gill!  :)  The "I spend way too much time on here but it's so addicting" is right on...  But, when I get that "Thank You" in the end, it makes it all worth it! :)

Having done this in non-forum form in school for so long, it's nice to be able to help people not only in my hometown (which has already happened on here... haha), but really across the globe!  The internet is an amazing place.  Plus, having this background on what causes bugs and what to look for will be great in my studies of Computer Science...

@Inwayz - Good luck and all the best!

dziegman

BTW - @Teresa - Am still interested in becoming a TC...  I realize the age factor may be an issue, so that's why my post is gone.  :)  I will continue dreaming...

Although there are many highly contributive members there seems to be a major lack of posts from contributors in the lower range of levels between levels 2-8 or so, everyone seems to be either level 1 or pretty close to a top contributor without much of a middle ground. A way should be found to encourage the assistance of a wider range of people even if they're not posting as often to help this middle tier of contributors to expand.
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? Bas Braams 3/6/12 10:11 AM
<<everyone seems to be either level 1 or pretty close to a top contributor without much of a middle ground>> The level system appears to be broken since the switchover to the current Help forum, on 2012-01-03 or so. All levels are frozen. I pointed it out about one week ago [1] on a conversation about the functioning of the forum.

[1] Re: Forum issues
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? Gill 3/6/12 12:46 PM
Also the way you move up through the levels is non-linear - it is very quick to go through to about 4 or 5 which is why you don't see many level 2 or 3 posters.
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? dziegman 3/6/12 1:01 PM
I agree with everything being said here...  All great points!

I think there are some people that are coming out of the woodworking (or other forums) who are beginning to fill this void.  But, we never know whether they're here to stay or not!  There are not many people who come to help...  Most are just here for help!

Just my thoughts...

Thanks for the feedback, levikus! I find that users quickly ramp up to higher levels once they become interested in the Docs forum. If you have suggestions for ways to encourage newer forum users to participate, I'm all ears. :)
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? Felicity_BB 3/6/12 3:13 PM
At the moment levels don't seem to be in place in this newer forum, but users' post counts are still available as records of their activity. :)
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? Bas Braams 3/7/12 12:17 AM
<<I find that users quickly ramp up to higher levels once they become interested in the Docs forum>> Not since 2012-01-03 when the new Product Forum was introduced. The system is broken. (I know, I sound like a broken record too, repeating my reply from less than one day ago.) See [1] for the hard evidence. 120 posts in Feb, more than that in the first week of March alone, very solid too, and still level 1.

Hi Teresa,

I'm not so much interested in being a top contributor but rather in knowing how to get help from Google. I am trying to use Google docs. I have been using them for some time, via Google Apps... this problem materialized yesterday evening. I have made no changes on my end. I'm very frustrated
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? Gill 3/13/12 11:05 AM
Please start a new thread for your issue, emiles1965.
You say " this problem materialized yesterday evening" - but do not explain the problem in detail. Please do so, with as much detail as possible, including your browser/computer OS and a how-to to reproduce the bug.

I'm afraid Google has lost control of its own organization.  Probably expanded too fast, employing group leaders who are not as talented as advertised and not being able to monitor their performance.  Reform will be painful.

Having some sort of  progress bar to the next level could very well help people (especially newer/younger pepole) try a bit harder, by letting them see that they are achieving.
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? dziegman 5/5/12 9:12 PM
In the old version this was an option.  I agree that this would help...

I've recently become a Google Apps for buisness administrator.

I'm constantly running into game changing bugs and issues as well as have the knowledge to help others out.  Is there any way to become a contributor quicker because of that?

Thanks

Nope - but answering questions on those topics quickly, politely and helpfully will start you on the road. Welcome to the forum :-)

No-one's stopping you - welcome to the forum, and please dive in and help straight away. Remember there are a few guidelines, basically to be polite, concise and to the point. It can help to include screenshots and/or refer to shared test docs/spreadsheets to illustrate a solution.

Good luck!.

Unfortunately, the second URL corresponding to rankings and other info was an error 404.

Thank you very much for the Forum Guidelines link. I had not seen that prior to now, and appreciate that you posted it.
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? Andy-C 4/11/13 3:52 AM
Hi Teresa,

How are issues that are reported in the forum fed back into your product/dev teams and prioritised for implementation?

One fundamental issue that appears to be generating a lot of noise is that (unless I am missing something, which is quite possible!) one cannot see page numbers on a Table of Contents at the start of a document. This is a complete failure if one needs to print and distribute the document, and is a basic, mandatory requirement for any professional document. But, despite a lot of noise, it doesn't appear to be receiving any attention - can you provide any info on this?

On a linked note, there is also no way to format the ToC wrt the different levels that are included (e.g. Heading 1, 2, 3...).

Again, this is basic stuff that severely impairs the usability of the product.

I think it would be very worthwhile if you publicised your roadmap and enabled users to suggest and then vote for the inclusion/exclusion of different features.

Looking forward to your response and thanks in advance,

Andrew

It seems to be a great program. I was filling the TC Interest Form and I noticed that I've to choose one of the Forum/Product of interest.

Can't I be active in a number of forums ? Are the top contributors chosen independently for each forum ?

Thanks
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? Gill 8/10/13 4:12 PM
<<Can't I be active in a number of forums ? Are the top contributors chosen independently for each forum ? >> You can be active in as many forums as you like. Yes, TCs are chosen/invited independently in each forum - and there are talented individuals who are TCs in more than one forum (I'm not one of them).
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? Leonard Sussman 8/13/13 8:13 AM
Hello Gill:  First time user of Google. Asking for some help in deciding what is best.  In trying to learn and maximize my ability to use Google, I have, with the help of a friend, who was able from a distance get into my computer and have all my Yahoo mail go to my Gmail account.  I am not at all familiar with Google mail, but since I am using it as I have no more mail in Yahoo (even though I receive mail via Yahoo) I am able to survive and sometime feel that it is OK.  I seem to like the color tabs next to the emails and the separation of ads and promotions from personal mail.  Seems to save me a lot of time. I also see that not all of my files from Yahoo were transported over to Google. I heard that that is a common problem.  Yesterday, I really missed Yahoo.  Seems easier.  Does it make sense to have two accounts Yahoo and Gmail functioning at the same time and not have the emails duplicated?  I have tried to unsync and get my Yahoo back but am at a loss as to how to do that.  Can you advise?  Thanks.  Len
Re: How do you become a Google Docs Top Contributor? Gill 8/13/13 9:14 AM
<<Seems easier.>> Probably because you are more familiar with it!
<<Does it make sense to have two accounts Yahoo and Gmail functioning at the same time and not have the emails duplicated?>> Yes, it does. I have several completely independent email accounts, some but not all of which have Google (drive) accounts associated with them. One is a yahoo account.

Having said that, if you intend to use Gdocs and spreadsheets it is definitely slightly easier to  use a Gmail account as the experience is then seamless.

<<I have tried to unsync and get my Yahoo back but am at a loss as to how to do that.  Can you advise? >> Sorry, no, I wouldn't know where to start.

Just keep participating on the forums and helping people. The Google employees are the ones who choose new TCs according to the guidelines in the first post.

Hi Teresa,

Don't know if you are still looking at this forum.... I use Drive a lot. Everyday. It's great but it sucks if you know what I mean... It looks like a school project... It pretty much does the job... just... but could really do with revamping... I recently (problem they wrong person to moan about this..) clicked when it said... "Try the New Google Sheets.... I waited... and..... it looks exactly the same as the old out dated one...

Something came up... Bye
