|How can I set certain cells to be unmodifiable?||davechandler||2/20/12 3:34 PM|
I'd like to share a spreadsheet, but make certain cells locked to prevent accidental modification. Some cells should be editable, but not all. If possible I'd also like to prevent the addition of new sheets.

I'm afraid that's not possible at this moment. You can share a spreadsheet with anyone with the link, and protect some of the sheets, so they can only be edited by specified persons. Only sheets, but not some cells of a sheet.
And if you share it to edit, then the other people can always add new sheets.

I too would prefer this feature from google...
i would like to freeze some cells, so that there will be no accidental edits...

Ok I've read about sheet protecting. I have a large document with 10 sheets that we were using for people to sign up for clinics and when the clinics fill up I'd like to be able for people to see it but not edit anymore. The protect sheet is supposed to be in the right arrow in the tab at the bottom but mine doesn't have that option. Is there a way for me to make it appear or another way to protect them?

I am using Google Chrome with Windows 7
I just checked ... by right clicking on the Sheet name and I did get the option to protect the sheet.

Are you the owner of the file? If not you might not have permission to lock/unlock the sheet(tab).

Yes I am the owner of the file. I created it. shared it and now I want to stop the editing on it and there is not an option to do that. I tried to access it through google chrome instead of IE9 and that still didn't help.
I opened it with google chrome and still didn't have the option to protect. can you not protect after it's been shared. we have a sign up sheet and after the sheet got filled I wanted to make it to where people can see but not edit. I have another spreadsheet that I haven't shared yet that does have the protect option. Why is this?

If you have shared your spreadsheet with someone with EDIT rights, the person with EDIT rights can make all the changes to the spreadsheet just as you, the owner, can. So if you want to prevent a person from EDITing your spreadsheet anymore, you have to go and change the rights for that person from
I hope this helps.

I don't understand how you do that. I can't find that function. Also some of the sheets in the spreadsheet still need to be able to be edited. Is this possible? Is there a better way to do this in the future? We had a spreadsheet with classes and each class had a tab for people to go in and sign up. Once a particular class is filled I want people to be able to view but not edit the sheet.

You can protect each tab separately - click on the black triangle on the tab to bring up the menu.
Perhaps it would help if you could share a spreadsheet with us and let us know exactly what you are trying to achieve, then Yogi and our other experts can take a look for you.
