How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx?
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? JJ Bloom 11/1/11 4:09 PM
You cannot merge cells in the new Google Docs. You can, on the other hand, merge them on the old Docs.
The following steps will allow you to merge cells:

  1) If you have any older-style documents that you haven't converted to the new style yet, open it and select File>Make a copy...
     • You can tell if it's new or old by whether it has a ruler along the top. Also, it will show up in blue whether or not you have the new look enabled.
  2) Clear the content of your new copy, and change the name to whatever's appropriate.
  3) Copy (CTRL+C, CMND+C for Mac) the contents of your old doc and paste (CTRL+P, CMND+P for Mac) it into the new older-style document.
  4) Go to Edit>Edit HTML

From there, you can merge the cells using HTML (see [1] for instructions on this).

<<there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx?>> That's because you cannot merge cells! We have been asking for this for as long as I can remember. The only (bad) workaround is to nest tables.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? jzraskin 11/8/11 8:18 AM
I'm having the same problem. How unbelievably frustrating it is to have had so many features removed from this updated version. Why is an update a downgrade? I thought docs were moving towards being a more full-featured suite. Poor show.

Is this still not fixed?  Still?  Really?  How many years has this been going on?  Can I swap the unwanted changes to the look, for just the basics of a word processor?

Has a google employee actually:
a) acknowledged this issue?
b) stated when they'll fix it?

They seem to have closed threads, but I've seen no indication that this is seen as a problem.

How can I look my users in the eye and say we should be using google docs, when they know that Word 2.0 was better?

Please sort this out Google - it's very basic functionality.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? MetroTramRER 11/27/11 2:44 AM
this has been totally disabled in the new doc-google... you have to use : ms-office, open-office, zoho.com

depending of what i do, i use zoho.com (for simple private documents, with merged cells also), open-office for more complex (company or private), ms-office when forced by colleagues, who don't have open office, because ms-office is installed by default in companies and not open-office (because, they have no idea, and don't ask themselves is something else free exists)
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Timothyjrobinson 5/4/12 10:01 AM
It's true; merging tables is a very basic function of word processor use. Google Docs can't hope to completely replace software if they don't even provide the very basics. They should make a media release saying, "oops, we totally forgot to include that in the very first version of Google docs. Here it is. Sorry for the embarrassing overlook! Sorry for the trouble."
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? David Hiemstra 6/15/12 2:43 AM
Come on Google, this is such a basic thing, why is it not there? Please add a merge feature..I'm not sure how you are hoping to beat out other products like word or open office if you dont have the basics...

Merging is useful - I would second this feature request.

Useful? I'd say it was essential! I cannot understand why it is taking sooo looooonggg to implement.

Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Gill 6/22/12 2:21 AM
<< I don't even know how to work around it...>> nested tables, but it's ugly and clunky and there is white space you can't get rid of, as Bas has pointed out.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Sourmynona 6/25/12 8:39 AM
It's been 16 months since the first post. It's more than ridiculous when I have to waste a few hours rewriting an entire document the way Google Docs likes it just because it's not competent enough in understanding a nicely formatted OpenOffice doc with merged tables in it.

And I cannot in good conscience bill my client for these wasted hours.

This is unbelievable.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? hiemsupreme 6/25/12 2:57 PM
OK Google, you obviously have lots of people unhappy with the lack of merge features--can this please be addressed? I think everyone here is very grateful for the products you offer and are sincerely trying to help you improve them. But it is bad business to ignore them, and this is how people start "hating the man" and start believing that Google is too big to listen to their users.

I am sure that you are addressing many issues with products, however this seems like one of the features that should be fixed right away.

Other significant issues that I have come across are listed here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x4c0y1NHk-h4t-y80ad1OiRyKQ2oDZJw0zu2g0qA4nQ/edit .

Thank you!

Two years ago I paid for Corporate Google / Gmail and moved my entire business into the cloud. Now Google has disabled using the old docs editor we are screwed without the very basic feature of merging or splitting cells. I now have hundreds of documents that are screwed! It seems I now have to move to Microsoft office online for a cloud solution, this is like giving your first born to the devil! Can Google even acknowledge this post and whether this in on the list of fixes or not?
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Gill 7/12/12 3:20 PM
@Brett_AUS - I sympathise. I have been banging on about the inability to merge table cells ever since the new editor appeared, I cannot see why it is so hard for them to  fix this bug - and as junyo says "This is ridiculous, since it actually broke existing documents with NO way to fix them". I cannot answer for Google, but they certainly are aware many of us are suffering from this oversight.

<< Is it me or Google too often releases a product "in beta" and never completes it? >> No, it's not you.

<<Is this product being slowly ignored and made irrelevant for additional resources?>> I don't think that is the case - there are new features in Docs, but there certainly seems to be a blind spot where tables are concerned.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? xemity 7/17/12 6:41 PM
Yes, Google Docs really needs this feature. My first impression of Google Docs wasn't a good one as after I imported my first document into it from Word the layout is almost completely destroyed due to the contents not merging across the table cells, which results in tables having extremely long columns. The bad part is that when the document  is first imported into word it displays correctly until it gets imported into Docs.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? lm01 7/30/12 7:51 PM
The removal of the Merge Cells function is a huge MISTAKE.
I was about to introduce Google Docs to about 150 students.
My opening lesson was to be on creating and manipulating tables to create complex documents.
I will now cancel this series of lessons and continue with MS Office.

Google is a big company with many projects and many bugs to fix? So if you want something fixed you need to be one of the louder squeaky wheels? We need to look for one of those web sites  where you can create a public  petition or setup a site. Make enough noise and we should be heard even if Google say merged cells are not coming back we at least have an answer and can move forward.  I'm happy to kick start this is everybody agrees and wants to help make our squeaky wheels louder enough to get a reply?

Ok, I'm in the same boat like you. I can't believe this basic feature is not there yet. Our school moved to Google Docs and I am working to use Docs to post syllabus and slide presentations online. Not sure what's taking Google to update their Docs. Come on this is a basic feature.

I don't think Google is the problem.  I suspect patents might have something to do with this more than anything else e.g.
http://www.google.com/patents/US20010049699

May be wrong. It just seems to important a feature and to trivial to solve for its absence to be due to implementation. Thoughts?
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Adrian9999 10/20/12 2:46 AM
I suspect that Google plans to phase out Google Docs. There seems very little development in it. They probably feel it's not worth spending resources on a free product. They wouldn't want to state this explicitly because so many people have so many docs stored there. Over time, people will drift away as they find better products. Then Google can quietly close it down.

This is crazy - I want to ntroduce Goole Drive to our school - but not being able to merge cells in tables is a huge drawback.  Google ..... please add this functionality as a priority.
I have spent hours trying to copy and paste in work done in Office as part of transitioning to Google Drive... can a Google representative please comment on this feature and give uusers an idea of when the fix will be implemented?  We need it.

Get rid of documents in the cloud? Not a chance. They just dealt a major deal with Samsung and Acer to have Chromebooks specifically designed for Drive.
That said, the fact they don't have something as simple as cell merging is rather silly.

Anyone else throw things at their TV when the ad for google drive (showing it not hanging, working fast, etc, etc) comes on?

Google sheets, while not Excel, is vaguely useable,  Google docs is still a dog product, due to missing basics like this.

And don't get me started on highlighting text in such a pale colour you can't be sure it's highlighted...

Google are are falling and its likely your leaderships fault. Between you failing at such small items like this and caving to the Chinese Government censorship after they made public statement about not supporting the censorship. Wasn't the Google Corp mission state "Don't be Eivil" whoops, guess the bottom line is more important and when Microsoft threatens legal action or possible partnership in word processing you support the same old monopoly. It is sad when a company puts out a product and gets a lot of people using it and then decides "good enough". I don't see why Google makes this product in the first place. I don't know how it benefits them financially. But it sure would be nice to have this one little feature resolved. What is the best way to bug Google about it?

Very frustrating - when simple things like this are not dealt with, I would agree, it seems that the disregard means change is in the air - that Google is putting its energies in something different to be released and this will be phased out ... Why else would they also treat the old Docs users with such disregard.  We'll just have to use it as a little aside (as it is, without attention given to fixes) and either wait for what comes next or pay for a service elsewhere.  On that note, one page I read says Google's recent purchase of Quickoffice may mean a shift is coming soon ... http://www.webpronews.com/google-acquires-quickoffice-ahead-of-google-docs-dissolution-2012-06

Interesting. But when you paste the table from the spreadsheet it has no borders and Google Doc doesn't know that it is a table.

Hi all,

I found a silly and cool workaround !!!

In a table Cell, use Insert Horizontal Line, and change Left Indent and Right Indent (from the ruler on the top) to make the line aligned to the cell boarders.  This will give the impression that the Table Cell is split, and the others are merged.

Silly, but it works.

Tarek.

This is the sample Template to show you how to implement Table Cell Split/Merge in a silly way.

Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Adrian9999 1/9/13 7:15 AM
Hi Tarek, many thanks for showing this. However, it only gives the appearance of merged cells. The cells are not actually merged. Your example works because the text is short enough to occupy a single cell. If the text was longer, the cell would start to stretch and it would not look good.

Mostly when I want merged cells, I want them merged horizontally, not vertically. In this case, it's rare for my text to occupy just a single cell.

I think we really need Google to do something about this issue.

Hi Adrian, of course.. that is why I said that it will simulate cell merge, it is not actual merge, it is a workaroud.

For so long --at least since January 2011, the begging of this thread-- so many have asked this question.

It's not as if the concern is absurd or difficult to grasp.  A spreadsheet application without the option to merge cells is about as useful as a calculator without a multiplication key.  It places, not simply awkward, but unacceptable constraints on the types of tasks the tool can efficiently navigate.

One can only guess at why Google chooses to ignore this. What's clear is that ensuring the application is capable of supporting everyday tasks in a professional environment is currently a very low priority.  Otherwise it would be already accomplished.

My 2 cents.  Take it for what its worth.  No slam intended to Google's bright and dedicated employees, many of whom I've grown to enjoy and respect.

I used the new "get help without leaving Drive" feature to search for merging cells in Documents. This is not helpful.

I really don't understand how Google markets Apps successfully to schools when merged cells in tables is probably one of the top five features used by teachers. Everything school related seems to get put into a table.

I have 20+ teachers who don't take Apps seriously simply because of this issue. I don't understand. Not at all. It doesn't seem like a two-year-in-development feature.

I DID buy a chromebook and I enjoy it for browsing, BUT-this problem with tables; then, uploaded some music into music manager--it took over a week and had to be done on my sickly old ASUS. I knew the chromebook couldn't be used to sync my iPod so I bought a Sansa clip. So far I can't get it to sync--but maybe the Sansa is defective.  I enjoy photography and have used Picasa for several years, but imagine my shock upon finding that you can't use it with the chromebook. Instead, there's a stripped-down Picasa that might satisfy a kindergartener's editing needs. Oh, also, I bought a quality all-in-one about a year ago, primarily for scanning photos, negatives, and slides, and printing photos. Ha, ha, none of it works with the chromebook. I have to buy a different printer/scanner for it? Deposit to my bank at home? Nope, not compatible with Java, which bank uses to deposit.  And the promised fix for Netflix still hasn't happened. I made several assumptions, and read several reviews before buying the chromebook---had I read the discussions here, I never would have bought it. I keep hoping they'll fix some of these issues. But there's an old saying, "Wish in one hand and s4it in the other and see which one fills up first."

This is soooo frustrating. Now they have closed the free Google Apps I'm really getting worried. Clients ask me how to merge cells and I have to tell them you can't do it any more. Clients also not prepared to test Google Apps for free for 30 days and then have stupid problems like this. Looks like we will have to move back to MS eventually... their online services look quite promising and are still free for 50 users

Dear Tarek

It does have merge & split cell functionality.

Part of my frustration & the reason for the comment re Office365 looking more like an option is also that I have been struggling with Google Sync no longer working with my Outlook - It simply stopped sending emails last week some time.  There are many discussions re this issue on forums - seems to happen once you go past the 4GB limit on a PST file.

Google stopped support of it's own Google Sync. You have to use a 3rd party software, like Sync2.com to do it now.

This is especially annoying for universities that are making the switch to Google Apps.  Google Docs has improved, but something as simple as merge cells in a table has not.  This needs to be improved.  There are those of us who need this feature for research papers or other professional papers that we are writing.  It is unacceptable to have to download a document and edit it in OpenOffice or Word just to have a couple of cells merged.

For those of you who think Google is too stupid to figure this out, the real reason your cells won't merge:

We have to wait until June 17, 2018 before this issue will be fixed unless Microsoft wants to let go of the one essential that makes their product look good.

You do realize that businesses/educational institutions are paying for Google Docs and that it is not free to them don't you? There are posts from a year or two where people were asking for what's now become basic functionality in an office suite and were told time and time again that it was coming soon &trade; . What is the point of it if someone sends you a document and a 3 page document is now filled with a table that spans multiple pages with the text squeezed into one column because it doesn't support a commonly used Microsoft Excel feature.

Yes Google Docs is a great product, but realistically how long do you think a business can put up with something like that?

Outlook and skydrive does everything better than google as far as I can see, so just use the outlook.com spreadsheet.

As a bonus you can use the full excel and automatically back up/ update my cloud docs.

Let's do the following. As we can see two years have passed and no one at Google seems to care or they don't read this.  Let's open a document, add a table and then press on "help". There you will find the option "report a problem". Now report the merging problem and send it. Maybe if we will all send this report every day at least once they will wake up and start working on it.

The furthest right will be the longed for merge button.

I am using android 4.0 on a not so great phone. I recently found by highlighting your desired cells then taping once in that area, a ribbon with 4 options will appear allowing you to finally merge feels on Google sheets on your mobile.

No you don't need a mouse. I just tried it on my nexus 4 running 4.3. Simply select a cell and you'll see the cell highlighted and each side will have a little ball you can use to expand the selection to other cells. Then, once the selection contains more than one cell tap the selection and you'll see a pop-up. One of the items is a merge cell. And it works! I wonder if there's a way to do it via desktop browser.

Which basic functions are you referring to, in particular? I have used Chromebooks and Google Docs only for years as a power user. No needed basic functions missing at all for me. As a matter of interest, are you aware the whole of the Malaysian public sector and education system is converting solely to Google Apps and Chromebooks? That is 10 million students alone. Of course, each to their own :-)

Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Jonathan Post 11/5/13 11:57 AM
I agree with you. At our school we start working with android tablets and we want our students to manage their notebooks through googledocs. When these basic functions are missing this is very difficult. Now another stupid thing is that googledocs works best on microsoft's windows and apple's OS and works terrible on Google's android. I would expect Google to take care of a perfect working googledocs on their own OS system. Now right to left languages like arabic and hebrew don't work on android's app of Googledocs. It is like Samsung producing a digital streamer that interacts best with a Sony television and doesn't interact with a Samsung television.

This topic is realy a serious issue than google need to fix. Because i'am a Google fan when i convert the documents i do this whit the combined cells, ie:

I convert this:
--------------------------------------------------
|           |               Address              |
|   Name    |------------------------------------|
|           |       Work       |    Personal     |
--------------------------------------------------

into this:

---------------------------------------------------
|   Name    |  Work Address    | Personal Address |
---------------------------------------------------

but, not all people like this workaround.

Unbelievable and very confrontating when one tries to promote the use of google docs instead of the mainstream Microsoft Word. It already takes quite some efforts because of the fixed mindsets, but the lack of such an essential feature for table doesn't make it easier. Two years waiting for a string of code to bring one simple function.

I use and promote multiple Google products, but with the rise of Windows Phone and Office 365, I'm less inclined to do so for a company who increasingly ignores their consumers.

If I started a new company today, I would only ever go Microsoft.

This really makes using Google docs difficult in a classroom and yet so many schools are moving to Google. Surely it's not that difficult to address?

Couldn't agree more. As long as it is unable to create a table with flexible cell arrangements, Google Docs is virtually useless to me and the staff of the school I work at. Back to Microsoft!

Not at all. There are lots of Google Docs improvements that have been released recently. I would not be surprised to see movements on outstanding issues like this.

Google Drive is a great tool for me but this problem is truly frustrating.  There should be a transparent process by which we can figure out solutions to our own problems without relying on someone miles away to rely on.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? lifeson 2/19/14 6:55 AM
I agree. Unfortunately, the development process tends to go this way. Development teams are under pressure to release products early, but there are only so many features you can crank out on a limited time frame. The result is software that works, but with limitations. I have no doubt the developers on the Google Docs team are working (or planning to work) on adding a Merge Cells feature. I guess we just have to wait.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Heather Pilonieta 2/20/14 8:08 PM
Your best bet to get the table you want is to make it in a spreadsheet and then copy and paste into the word doc. It's not nearly as painful as trying to nest tables like others have suggested.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Jonathan Post 2/20/14 8:44 PM
Others have suggested the same, but this doesn't work. When doing this it unmerges the merges cells automatically. Isn't there anyone who knows someone who works at Google and can try to find out how we can contact the Google docs department in order to try to convince them to solve this huge problem in a day or two?

Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Labarum 3/4/14 10:00 PM
Hey Gill, I have been looking some more at Tables in Ddocs. I see "Merge Cell" is a feature requested nearly as often as "Different First Page Header", and at least as often as Columns.

I cannot think of a use for "Merge Cell" - just shows how we are all different, and how the 80/20 rule is nonsense. 80/20? 80% of software users only use 20% of the features, so software makers can concentrate on on the 20%. Problem: not all users value the same 20% - what is an unnecessary frill for one is an a work critical essential tool for another.

I can see a use for split and merge tables, convert table to text and nested tables (which seem to work in Gdocs), delete and insert row and column , but please tell me what "Merge Cells" would be used for?

But again the case remains: we need all those features that were standard ten years ago in business/academic wordprocessors; and we need excellent MS Office file format compatibility. Open/Libre Office achieved all that years ago.

Oh, and let's not forget the need for competent and full featured PDF management.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Labarum 3/4/14 10:13 PM
O, I see

A heading across a number of cells would be one use.

I have never needed Tables of that complexity, and if I did my mind would jump to nesting.

The title of a simple Table I would just centre outside the table.

As I said, we are all different, and the software needs to be over designed to cope with those differences.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Jonathan Post 3/4/14 11:53 PM
As you said, you have found about three different functions people are requesting. Meaning that these three functions are part of the 20% used/needed by many users (maybe not all) in this software. As a software a disgner I would firstly concentrate on these three functions and only than add other functions. At least if I want as many people possible to be convinced that your software is the best. The problem is that Google doesn't care a sh.t when it comes to multiple requests for improving there software.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Tickmc 3/5/14 12:24 AM
Jonathan,

I think you had a reasonable argument - right up to the final sentence which is very wide of the mark, actually. Their software updates are very much linked to user feedback - possibly more than any software I have used. See Chrome & ChromeOS for great examples of this.

O at least three. Traul GDocs forum for your self. A proper implementaion of Table of Contents comes up regularly with endnotes and citation management. The one that surprises me is the request for a collapsible outliner which I would put in the "nice to have" rather than "essential  for academic writing". Of course the big one is variable headers through a sectioned document which is needed for something as simple as a two page business letter right through to a dissertation or these. (It's a brave user that commits a thesis the Gdocs!

And on Google's response to customer requests I think at best we can say is,  it's patchy, given the three years many of the requests just noted have been continuing.

The hardware now being turned out is excellent and the basic OS is very sound - what count's for application software on the platform need to catch up- and fast.

Google has the resources. Has it the will?

Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Tickmc 3/5/14 2:24 AM
Labarum,

If you were compare it to 'traditional software' from Microsoft, you have feature releases of Office 97, 2000, 2003, 2007, 2010 etc which makes three years relatively standard. With web-based software, features can, and do, appear at any time. Which is one of its appeals IMHO.

Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Labarum 3/5/14 4:16 AM
I agree Mike. One of the advantages of Google's approach is that they can, and in some areas have, adopted a much faster development cycle than the traditional operating system and application software vendors; thought it remains true that in some areas Google has been tardy in responding to users expressed needs.

It does seem that Google will focus on those developments that tickle the fancy of their software engineers, while neglecting the rather boring and mundane development of features like headers, footers and tables, the lack of which deliver sometimes insuperable problems to users.

And the MS Word Web App does not do columns either. It will correctly display an MD Word file in columns, but editing is not possible. If you are running the Web App on a machine that has an copy of Ms Word installed you can, however, at the click of a button, run full MS Word for all the features you might want. Microsoft does offer a solution.

The problem for Chromebook users is that they have no recourse to a fully featured, installed Word Processor - they only have cloud based word processors which are poor in comparison. Those who have bought Chromebooks expecting to be able to achieve the sophisticated formatting required by their business or academic department. This failure is in urgent need of remedy: the hardware vendors and Google are responsible for servicing their customers.

Chromebook users with enough energy and technical know how can work round the problem but using remote desktop to access a full featured word processor on a Windows PC or a Mac, or they can run Linux on their Chromebook and access Open or Libre Office. That is fairly complicated, unnecessary and beyond the abilities of many, especially when the Chromebook has been sold as a simple to use appliance.

I have given up - at the first hint of difficulty I just walk to a PC - not all Chromebook users have that luxury.

Not quite true, Labarum - Chromebooks do have a version of QuickOffice now which will do basic editing on Word files - including I believe columns. Strangely I think it only works on downloaded local files, not those in the cloud, which seems very peculiar for a cloud-based machine like a Chromebook.

Quick Office on a Chromebook will indeed display a Word document in columns, and it is possible to edit them on an existing document. It is not possible to create  such a document, and it is not possible the edit any inherited column break codes in an existing document. Quick office has been lurking in beta on Chromebook for months and has made no advances I can see. Why did they bother? It may be there is work behind the scenes to turn it into the full featured word processor needed - I hope so.

You've said it . . .  "strangely" . . . "very peculiar". Those who buy Chromebooks are buying half finished products lacking many of the features they might properly expect since were common in business/academic word processors. Neither Gdocs nor QuickOffice nor Gdocs are fit for purpose - not of "merchantable quality".

This thread is about lack of a "Merge Cells" feature. It is only one thread of many illustrating Google's failings.

To clarify, this thread is regarding Google Docs (replacement for MS Word), not Spreadsheets. AFAIK, you can merge cells in Sheets. But this is simple functionality that has existed for a very long time in MS Word, I'd even be willing to say since the late 90's (but I'm not positive). However, I know for a fact I was able to do this in Office XP...that suite is ancient at this point and Google Docs still can't do this simple function...

You're comparing apples and oranges: you cannot compare desktop software with browser-based software; if you look at Word Online (the web-based version of Word) then you will see it does not provide merge table cells either, so if the beloved Microsoft cannot do it in the web browser maybe you should cut Google some slack?
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? CrunchyTacooos 3/18/14 5:06 PM
Yes, you make a very important point here - desktop app vs web-based really is apples to oranges. To that end then, I'm sorry for making the comparison. Lol to the 'beloved Microsoft' comment - they have lost my interest so long ago I didn't even know there WAS a web-based Word and was in no way making a comparison to that product as I've never even seen it.

That's neither here nor there though. I see no reason to 'cut Google some slack' as this thread has been active since 11/1/11 for an extremely simple feature request. Now, if we were asking for table support then yes, I understand that is a complicated thing to build. Oh, but they already built it. The much harder part of having table support, allowing for formatting of the individual cells, resizing, etc. has all been completed.

And web-based is no argument for difficulty unless it's an issue that no one has solved. It has been solved. You can do this, and have been able to do this, in Google Sheets. So, the fact that this is in a browser is not a limitation, it's listening to your users and hearing what they want. We all ask a lot of Google but at the same time they promise a lot. Tbh, I'm also quite amazed that Microsoft hasn't done this yet either and I'd love to hear why this is such a 'difficult' task. From this perspective it sure feels like there is no real urgency to pay attention to these threads. There are 231 posts by 131 unique users over the span of 2.5 years. We're not asking to reinvent the wheel where, we're asking for a feature we've all used in the past and frankly seems like a basic function of using tables. Waiting since 2011 seems like cutting them a lot of slack, please correct me if I'm being bratty here but be sure to back up your statement with solid reasons, no need to turn this into a mud-slinging contest.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? CrunchyTacooos 3/18/14 5:11 PM
To add on to my statement, I'm pretty sure most people here would be more than happy to accept a statement closing this thread saying:

"We have heard what you have to say and this is on our roadmap for the next release of Google Docs. Please understand this is not the highest priority to us as we have much larger projects on our plate and this may not be ready for the next release but will be out on the one following."

I'm just...amazed that I keep running into threads like this one where it seems the community isn't even being heard or acknowledged...

Again, prove me wrong, I would in fact LOVE to be wrong on this and concede that I was just being pissy about a feature I wanted right now that didn't exist.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Steegle 3/18/14 5:29 PM
Oh I have mourned the loss of merging table cells when Google Docs changed from its HTML-based original form to this version that allows for realtime collaborative editing for up to 50 users (truly an amazing feature and Microsoft has only just recently began to get close to this).

I can put some meat on the bones as to why it's "difficult". You may have never heard of Google Apps Script but this shows that a lot more goes on behind the scenes. A Google Doc can be made entirely via script, including making tables, adding columns, rows etc, etc. When Google introduces a feature like merge cells then Google Apps Script also needs to know how to handle merged cells and, ideally, be able to merge cells too (I don't know if you can make a table and merge cells in VBScript in Word: hats off to MS if they pulled this off). Making a change like this, therefore, is not as simple as it appears.

I wholeheartedly agree that years have passed and you'd think by now Google would have done something, and they may have, but other things can get in the way (e.g. only yesterday there was a Sheets outage so this will divert the engineers' attention to ensure whatever was the cause does not happen again). Google could release this feature tomorrow for all we know.

Road Maps - Google doesn't do them - never has and I don't believe ever will. Why? Because sometimes Google doesn't know what it will do next as priorities can change overnight. Remember Google Wave? If you had asked me when it came out what Google Docs would look like now I'd have said Google Docs would not exist and Wave would have replaced it. But that didn't happen: Wave disappeared but it inspired a great many ideas in many of Google's products (like the real time collaboration in Google Docs we use now).

Let's hope for an overnight priority change in favour of this feature so we can see it soon. Don't get me wrong I too have moaned and groaned at Google about this feature (directly face-to-face with the Docs team) and they know how many people want it but, for whatever reason, Google has not released it.

Change the background color of cell to the same as cell border color

For example:

Def

5678

Ghi

0912

         Sales

Jkl

4321

Mno

I will cut Google no slack. I am a Chromebook owner. In association with hardware manufacturers Google is selling Chromebooks into the academic and  and corporate market and promoting it heavily, but the product is not fit for purpose.

MS makes available its Web Apps on different terms - they are a secondary lightweight set of tools that on appropriate hardware can be switched out in favour of the full featured installed Office package.

Google must either make it's cloud apps as powerful as a set of installed apps or provide Chromebooks with a full featured Office package in the Chromebook firmware. That may be the plan with the Quick Office Beta which has been popping up and taunting us with it inabilities for months.

In short: no slack. No excuses. Google must make it possible for hardware vendors to sell a product with a full set of competent Office tools. I don't care how it is achieved: WebApp, Naive Client or whatever. I just want a Chromebook that has an appropriate set for tools.

Nice try. Yes, we need a complete working vehicle: we need a word processor with all those features that were considered standard and essential ten years ago and more.

But let me correct one point - the car is not free, many paid good money for it.

Anyone who has bought a Chromebook paid for a package that included Google Docs - and it is not in full working order.

And worse - this unfinished product is being sold hard into the tertiary education market where impecunious students find it won't do what that bought it for.

It's an utter disgrace.

The millions of students who are being given Chrome Books and forced on to Google Docs by their institutions won't even be aware that a word processor should be able to merge cells in a table. Then again, there is a whole generation that has no concept of document formatting. I complain about all that is lacking from Google Docs, and I still use it year-after-year, because of long-ago "Microsoft-hate". I can't believe I just spent 30 minute reading through this thread.

Clearly Google doesn't care and doesn't need to care. It's not like "Google still can't merge table cells" is going to be a front-page news story.

I don't normally bother trying anything more complex than browsing and webmail on my Chromebook - for that it's great - but a few days ago I thought I would have a go at generating a document with a fairly simple table repeating down the page. Of course inability to merge the top row of the table was the first problem, then I found I could not protect the table from dividing across  page break. There were other problems - inadequate header and footer formatting . . . and . . . and . . .

In fairness MS Word Web App on OneDrive was no better at the job.

In the end I used Open Office Writer on a PC - it's free and has all those missing features I needed.

It is obvious that google does not care about the needs of their users, they are using other design criteria.  As you know, they data-mine all of their docs. There primary goal is most likely to make their documents easy to mine. As such, I say Google can pound sand, and vote with my feet. There are other better alternatives for online document creation, and will now exit and go to one of them.

You can actually have merged cells, by cheating the system that is! You only need to do it not on the Google Docs, but on Word document. Create a table, select the segments you want to merge, then go to borders and shading, make the box option, the lines in the middle will disappear, copy the table to docs online and you're welcome. :) Hope this helps.

I believe Google would like to add this feature but cannot because Microsoft has patented the merge table cells idea.

The patent is entitled "Method and system for merging cells in a table and for adding an integrated header and a nested table to a table in an electronic document"

Read the full patent here: https://www.google.com/patents/US6442575

My understanding is that Google added this feature to Docs way back when, then had to remove it after Microsoft claimed it was infringing on their patent. If there's anyone we should be angry with, it's primarily the outdated US patent system that approves absurd patents such as this one, followed by companies like Microsoft who have the gall to not only file for such a patent, but who then actually seek to enforce it.

I'm not a patent law expert, but I don't think it's a question of the patent being water tight. Rather, I imagine it's a question of Google weighing its options and deciding to take the safer route.

AFAIK, a patent-holder can sit on a patent for some time, then bring an infringement lawsuit asking for damages covering the entire period that the accused infringer infringed on the patent.

In practice, this means you could get away with infringing on someone's patent for years, then have to pay up for all of those years when the patent-holder sues you.

Furthermore, the patent-holder can pick and choose who is able to license his patent. It could be that Microsoft has allowed free, open-source applications to use this patented idea, but has not allowed commercial organizations to do the same.

Again, it's not a question of whether or not the patent is water tight. There are too many other variables in play.

Okay pretending the patent is some how valid and dismissing the fact that Google's Sheets has a Merge Cells feature...
My conclusion is that  "Google" is either lazy, doesn't care, or has other priorities

Is the patent really applicable? I don't believe so, but I'm no patent lawyer and that patent was too dry to sink my teeth into this morning.
But the patent was filed in 1998.  Prior Art: HTML tables already had that feature when the <td>'s attribute of "colspan"  is equal to some number greater than 1.
See: http://www.barrypearson.co.uk/articles/layout_tables/history.htm
The first proposal for HTML tables that I have a record of was documented by Dave Raggett late in 1993

Consider the following:
 - that Google Docs is web based software which uses HTML
 - we use web-browsers to display this software
 - browsers like FireFox can leverage a tool called Grease Monkey which lets you 'install' scripts so you can manipulate web pages. EXAMPLE: http://lifehacker.com/256812/google-doc-download-greasemonkey-script

Solution:
 - Some clever developer should be able to play around and create a "simple" solution for this.  WE THE PEOPLE SHOULDN'T NEED TO WAIT FOR GOOGLE.

From my playing around, there was an issue with manipulating the HTML in this fashion and the changes NOT SAVING.  But I was able to force a button on the page that removed the next 1 cell, and expanded the current cell.

A patent on cell-merging in a table?

Microsoft didn't invent 'cell merging.'

It looks like peoples' longstanding frustration over this issue may have left them a bit daffy.  (Why all this scurrying to find explanations of why Google hasn't done something -- this is nothing new, guys 'n gals.)

What's really interesting is that while Google has done nothing to add this feature, even Apple's TextEdit, which comes free with the computer and is essentially a 'text editor' (not even a full-blown 'word processor') has had both tables and cell-merging for quite a while.

I don't follow what you're trying to claim -- that Google Docs can't add merging of table cells because of a patent by Microsoft?

I can’t see any way that any corporation can claim to hold a patent on 'cell merging.'  It's almost like claiming to hold a patent on the use of 'bold' or 'italics.'

Even if Microsoft holds a patent on a particular method of cell merging, why can't Google create its own method of merging cells?

WordPerfect had cell merging in document tables long before Word did.

I'm not trying to claim anything. Rather, I am pointing out the FACT that Microsoft does, indeed, hold a patent (US 6442575 B2) on the concept of a "Method and system for merging cells in a table and for adding an integrated header and a nested table to a table in an electronic document," and has done so since Jun 17, 1998, retroactively, since the patent was, in FACT granted by the US Patent Office.

I have linked directly to Google's record of the patent, which is still in effect today. As such, your protestations are rather ridiculous and unfounded, and it's apparent that you have a lot to learn about patents.

Apparently you are -- that MS's patent somehow prevents Google Docs from including cell merging in document tables.

You haven't stated how that is the case.  If such proof is contained in the rather lengthy document you keep citing, please state it specifically by quoting the text.

You also ignored both my suggestion that Google could circumvent any patented method of cell merging by creating its own, and that WordPerfect included cell merging in document tables before Word did, so how could Microsoft hold an essentially generic patent on it?

As such I would say that my "ridiculous" and "unfounded" protestations are well-eclipsed by your own.  Until you prove otherwise (and I don't mean by just citing some document you claim -- without showing how -- contains the proof).

Here's what I said in my first post to this discussion: I believe Google would like to add this feature but cannot because Microsoft has patented the merge table cells idea.

I then proceeded to link to a factual patent (granted to Microsoft by the US Patent Office) that describes a "method ... for merging cells in a table ... in an electronic document." Of course, I can't prove that this is the reason Google has removed a feature that it offered at one time in its docs, and I never claimed to be able to. Rather, I stated my belief that the referenced patent is behind google's removal of the feature.

You haven't stated how that is the case.  If such proof is contained in the rather lengthy document you keep citing, please state it specifically by quoting the text.

The "rather lengthy document" I keep citing is Google's copy of the patent in question. I'd invite you and anyone else who's interested to read it, in its entirety. For those who would like a summary, I think the Title plus abstract will be helpful:

Method and system for merging cells in a table and for adding an integrated header and a nested table to a table in an electronic document

Abstract
In an electronic document, merging cells in a table, adding an integrated header to a table, and adding a nested table to a table. A table erasing tool allows a user to merge cells in a table. An indication is received to merge certain cells. The indication indicates at least one cell border for deletion. Cells of the table are merged horizontally across each row that includes at least one indicated cell border. Cells of the table are merged vertically across each column that includes at least one indicated cell border. A determination is made whether there are any successful merges and, if so, the merging tasks are repeated until there are no further successful horizontal or vertical merges. A table drawing tool allows a user to add an integrated header row to a table or create a nested table.

You also ignored both my suggestion that Google could circumvent any patented method of cell merging by creating its own, and that WordPerfect included cell merging in document tables before Word did, so how could Microsoft hold an essentially generic patent on it?

Your first suggestion was wrong and shows that you need to brush up on your understanding of patent law before you continue this discussion (or else offer some outside support for the validity of the suggestion).

Regarding your second suggestion, the fact that the US Patent Office granted Microsoft's patent application is a strong indication that you're just as wrong, there. If, indeed, WordPerfect had offered this feature before Microsoft, their intellectual property owner (or anyone else interested in offering such a feature in their software) would have challenged the patent on the grounds of 'prior art.'

In fact, you have offered nothing but your own apparently ill-informed opinion in this discussion, referring to zero outside sources, whatsoever. As such, and until that changes, I rest my case.

One other possibility, as I have mentioned elsewhere in this discussion, is that Microsoft has licensed the use of this patented concept to some but not all entities who would like to offer this feature in their software.

Yet another possibility that I have also already mentioned is that some entities may choose to ignore a specific patent at their own peril, while other entities may choose to play it safe. In case you haven't been paying attention, patent wars have been brewing for some time, with several large actors (Apple, Microsoft, Google, Sun, Samsung, etc.) embroiled in costly patent disputes. In such a landscape, it's likely that some entities will choose the safe route and avoid activities that may be seen as infringing on competitors' patents, in fear of costly litigation down the road.

Again, I would suggest that you beef up on your understanding of patent law.

As such I would say that my "ridiculous" and "unfounded" protestations are well-eclipsed by your own.  Until you prove otherwise (and I don't mean by just citing some document you claim -- without showing how -- contains the proof).

Well, you said (at least 7 times in this discussion :D ), and I quote:

I can’t see any way that any corporation can claim to hold a patent on 'cell merging.'

That's simply a ridiculous and uninformed statement. There is no corporation that "claim[s] to hold a patent on 'cell merging,'" rather there is a corporation that factually holds a patent on that very concept, as evidenced by the title and abstract of the actual patent text, to which I have linked on multiple occasions, and which I have reproduced in this specific post.

I would argue that any reasonably intelligent English speaker should be able to read the title and abstract of Microsoft's actual patent and understand why such a patent, which was granted by the US Patent Office and is still in the status "Grant", could deter some companies from offering a similar feature in their electronic-document-editing-software.

Here's a little history for you regarding Microsoft an Corel (the creator of WordPerfect): Details of Corel/Microsoft deal revealed

Selected excerpts form the above-linked article follow:

...In addition to specifying the resolved legal problems between the two companies, which involves Microsoft's patented IntelliSense technology...

...In the 97-page SEC filing, Microsoft agrees not to sue Corel for violations of several of its patents on Office-related technologies. The patents include "Method and system for selecting and executing arithmetic functions and the like," dating back to 1994; "Method and system for customizing a user interface in a computer system," also from 1994; and "Text checking application programming interface, a 1995 patent covering Microsoft's IntelliSense technology, which connects the application with a backend spell checker and "text checking engine." In other words, Microsoft patented the way its spelling and grammar checkers work in Office applications, where you see squiggly red and green lines appear under words and sentences that might need to be changed. Corel WordPerfect, like numerous other modern Office applications, copied this lucrative feature from Microsoft Office. Microsoft hasn't issued Corel a license to use these technologies, but has instead supplied a legal covenant under which the company may continue doing so. The distinction between the two is a bit unclear, but appears that Corel may continue using these features while its multi-year agreement with Microsoft is in effect...

///End Excerpts

You've yet to offer any sources that back up your claim that "WordPerfect included cell merging in document tables before Word did," and history shows that Microsoft was in the midst of legal challenges against Corel over a number of Office-related techologies that Microsoft had patented when they entered into a partial buyout agree with Corel that included Microsoft allowing Corel to continue to use some of those patented techniques / agreeing to end its legal challenges against Corel based on those patents. We have what appears to be a partial but probably not exhaustive list of such patents in the above article that I quoted, and judging from the titles of the listed patents, I wouldn't be surprised to find that Microsoft's Office-related patent entitled "Method and system for merging cells in a table and for adding an integrated header and a nested table to a table in an electronic document" was included in the exhaustive list.

Now, tell me again how patent law works, and why it would be 'daffy' to think that the patent I linked to originally might play a role in Google's decision to remove the merge table cells feature from its docs software.

Any other 'daffy' topics you'd like to learn about today?

For those who may be interested in the topic of recent patent litigation between technology firms (with special attention paid to litigation involving Google and/or Microsoft), here are a few articles you may find informative:

Google has been one of the industry’s most vocal companies in calling for patent reform, aiming to eliminate so-called patent trolls, outfits set on making money from patent litigation. But it’s worth remembering that tech companies tend to grow more litigious with age. For example, Microsoft had filed only four patent suits in its entire history before 2010, but that year, the company sued Salesforce.com for patent infringement and began filing complaints against Android handset manufacturers such as Motorola. Microsoft has joined a consortium along with Apple and Blackberry that has filed another suit against Google.

Microsoft Co-Founder Launches Patent War - The Wall Street Journal, 8/8/13
His targets vowed to fight. "This lawsuit against some of America's most innovative companies reflects an unfortunate trend of people trying to compete in the courtroom instead of the marketplace," a Google spokesman said. Other companies named in the suit said they planned to defend themselves or weren't available to comment.

Patent litigation in general is on the rise, in what is becoming a lucrative endeavor. Ocean Tomo, a Chicago-based merchant bank that tracks the intellectual-property market, values the licensing market at as much as $500 billion.

Mr. Allen's lawsuit comes amid high-profile successes of firms such as NTP Inc., which enforce patents without making products and have been called "patent trolls" by critics. Courts have tried to rein in patent litigation, with mixed results, and Congress has yet to act on legislation that would do the same.

A Google patent lawyer says that the patent system is broken, and he accuses Microsoft of abusing the system. Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle on Sunday, Google's Tim Porter pointed to Microsoft's attacks on Linux as an example of its broader corporate strategy.

"When their (Microsoft's) products stop succeeding in the marketplace, when they get marginalized, as is happening now with Android, they use the large patent portfolio they've built up to get revenue from the success of other companies' products," he said.

Vringo is a tiny company that purchased some patents from Lycos, an old search engine, in 2011 and then used those patents to sue Google. In December 2012, Vringo won $30 million in a jury trial, but that was far less than the hundreds of millions it was seeking.

Today, Vringo got the payout it was looking for: a 1.36 percent running royalty on US-based revenue from AdWords, Google's flagship program. US District Judge Raymond Jackson had already ruled last week (PDF) that the AdWords program, which was tweaked by Google after the Vringo verdict, wasn't "colorably different" from the old infringing program. He gave Google and Vringo one last session to hammer out a royalty rate, and when they couldn't, he went ahead and set it (PDF)—at almost exactly the rate Vringo was seeking.

... an extremely rough calculation suggests US AdWords revenue is somewhere in the range of $15 billion to $18 billion annually. If that's right, it would place the Vringo royalty win somewhere in the realm of $200 million to $250 million annually. The patents expire in 2016, and Google is liable from November 2012, which is the date final judgment was entered after the trial.

And of course, if Google loses, it will owe interest on the whole shebang.

Mr. SFRTX, you are clearly an expert on something or other (I’m not quite sure what).  Your entire argument seems to rely on some obscure patent information that no one but a patent attorney or a pedant would care to read.

Deluging us with a lot of verbose text isn’t going to prove anything.  I didn’t ask you to provide encyclopedic information about one or more Microsoft patent suits.

I asked you for specific text that shows that Microsoft holds a patent that prevents Google from including cell merging in Google Docs/Drive.  If that’s not your point, why are you posting about this in a Google Docs forum?

Has cell merging in document tables been removed from WordPerfect?

Has it been removed from LibreOffice Writer?

How is it that Apple’s TextEdit includes cell merging if Microsoft somehow owns the exclusive right to it?

Is Microsoft currently suing Apple for including cell merging in TextEdit?

If not, I rest my case.  Maybe you should rest yours, too, or at least take it somewhere else where likeminded people might want to wade through all your exciting legalistic prose.  Here you're not doing much more than throwing a monkey wrench in the works.  Google Team members must be getting quite a kick out of you providing them with an odd but welcome excuse to never get around to including cell merging in Google Docs.

In the meantime you could merge cells by inserting tables inside tables.  See the attached Doc.

Have also been frustrated by this and saw this workaround by Roger Nixon: http://wpsit.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/cell-merging-in-tables-within-google.html

In essence, merging cells is possible if tables are created within a Google Drawing. This finished drawing can then be copied to the Web Clipboard and pasted into a Google Doc where it remains editable.

Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Labarum 6/26/14 7:37 AM
Nice solution, but it leaves me shaking my head in disbelief.

Doesn't this simple workaround make Google look incredibly stupid?

Why frustrate your customers so? Yes, customers. Recent posts on the Table of Contents complaint thread make it clear that business users are paying handsomely for missing features; and I have often pointed out any singleton Chromebook user has paid for the use of Gdocs when they handed over cash for the hardware.

Wake up, Google!
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Eamon Fitzpatrick 6/27/14 2:19 PM
Interesting but it still opens slower as it fetches the attached drawing, you have to open a separate window to edit the table and it also exports as an imbedded picture.

The biggest problem however is that any documents you import with tables are always totally mangled.

All the chrome viewers and even the docs preview are spot on, which is even more confusing.

If you add some of the other longstanding bugbears the new sheets missing spellcheck completely and no offline spell check in docs and then adding amazing new hight complicated features like classroom...I am just at a loss!!

If its legal just let us know, and come up with a workaround.

BTW I am responsible for a apps in my company and another education user and I am having to thing about 365 even with its management overhead, there's simple and then there's broken and we are walking a really fine line here :(

I'm working on a summer homework assignment between houses currently and my plan is to make the entire table with the max amount of columns/rows i need and ignore columns that i wouldnt be using for the moment and then when i finish download it as a word doc to fiddle with formatting before printing. I'm not sure what your situation is but my best solution is to work with it all ugly until you can convert it into something that can do correct formatting. Hopefully this can get fixed. i like the practicality of google docs but theyre missing so many necessary features compared to microsoft office that i can't yet use it on its own. Actually you may be able to make the table in another program (if you have access to one) and upload it to your drive and work on it from there? i may try that..

Years later, hundreds of complaints, over 100,000 views of this thread (have Google stopped counting?) and still no useful response that I have spotted from anyone at Google nor word as to when this will be fixed.

Merging table cells in a word-processor is not a 'trivial detail'. Clearly it is 'make or break' for many people here. As for myself. I do use Google Docs on Drive, but not as much as I would like, and feel ashamed when suggesting to people that Drive is a useful collaboration tool to have to remember the caveat; 'but tables in documents do not work properly'!

Come on Google. Speak to us! An acknowledgement would be nice (have I missed something?) A road-map better. Giving people a place to discuss your products and then ignoring them is not good customer relations, it feels like arrogance.

Depending on what you are trying to achieve you may be able to fudge it with nested tables - or take a screenshot of the spreadsheet version and insert the image into the doc. I quite agree none of this is ideal.

I don't know why we can't merge cells, but I do know the Google team is well aware of the request.

Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Lispeltuut Lelystad 8/24/14 1:56 PM
You can easily work around:

  1. Create a table, just one cel. (Make sure your font size is as small as possible. The cell padding also very small ..)
  2. In the cel you create a new table, 2 cells (or, if you need, 3 or more).
  3. Than create in one cell  a new table in the shape you want (e.g. 3 rows, 4 columns). And in the other as well (e.g. 1 row, 2 colums). Now you can place merged cells besides not merged cells. Possibilities are as endless as in Microsoft Word. But .. please note that your margins and fonts are as small as possible in the work around table.
Ive got nice examples, but ... how do I post them here??

putting table in cell isn't a solution.

if you have hundreds of docx with merged cell, can you upload them to google doc and edit it?

the answer is "NO".

you can upload and preview, but you should not convert them to 'google doc type' ever!

google doc mess up all the 'merged cell', and chaos is waiting for you.

I recommend just put docx in dropbox or OneDrive.

P.S. OneDrive can't merge cell neither, but it will display it properly when you edit the doc

Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Digi Byte 8/25/14 7:29 PM
For future reference, nesting tables is not a problem, the problem is 'merging'
Merging is the act of having say a 3x3 table and having two of those cells blend together, so text is able to flow into the other cells space.
that is the issue

an example would have a side table with a centered header that spans 2 columns

I'm willing to bet the problem lies behind the fact its probably a trademark infringement of some sort

Instead of idle speculation, can you offer any evidence of that?

The idea that cell merging would be patentable doesn't make any sense to me.   It would be like patenting copy-&-paste.

Microsoft may hold a patent on a certain cell merging format, algorithm, etc., but Google hardly needs to be worried about that.  Doesn't it think it's smarter than Microsoft and can come up with its own superior version of cell merging anyway?

And then there are all the other word processing apps that have the feature.   I've never run across any mention of their developers being sued by Microsoft for patent infringement.

Last but not least, if it really was an infringement issue, why would Google not have notified its many complaining users that its hands were tied, thereby ending the matter?

Sorry to post this in reply to a particular post; didn't see an alternative.

A not-so-elegant workaround for merging cells is to create and edit the table in GSpreadsheet (where you can merge cells and do other editing not available in GDoc). Then you can paste the completed spreadsheet (or each re-edited version) into the GDoc as an image rather than a table.
"Insert" Menu/"Drawing" Command
Paste the copied spreadsheet into the drawing box.
You can squeeze the columns in the drawing box without distorting the contents.

Interesting that you can merge cells in the spreadsheet and not the docs.
Interesting that if you paste the spreadsheet into the doc as text rather than image, you get a nice table but one in which your merged cells will have been de-merged.

I am trying not to be rude, and I do appreciate the effort that has gone into demonstrating the "do the table in drawing and paste it in" tube, but I really have to ask, how is this different to the probably 30 or 40 times this has been suggested in the past. The simple fact is that this is a clunge, and for a professional person who wants to use google docs, this is unwieldy and in short useless, or to put it another way, any person who uses a word processor as part of their professional life should not be using google docs.
I did however like the comment at the end, where somewhat optomistically it is stated the the solution should be available soon, given that this problem has existed for many years now, and google does not even seem to have creating a solution on their radar.
Google doesn't care, see the 90+ previous posts, where no-one from google has even admitted that there is a problem.
Using several different packages to create and then insert features, then requiring editing to be done in external packages etc is not a solution, and it would be good if contributors read the previous posts before they made suggestions, as I am sure many people like me are frustrated that there is no solution, and suggesting this sort of thing just adds to the frustration.

Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Jo S. 9/14/14 4:23 AM
Hello, Mark. Thanks for sharing your views in the forum. Please know that the vast majority of contributors to the forum are volunteers -- Google Docs users just like you who are trying to help out. The Drive Team is aware of this request -- as you noted, it's a popular one. I imagine we'll see it in a future update, but Google receives countless requests for countless features, many just as popular or more so than this one. I'm guessing that they deal with the most urgent issues first, but I have no way of knowing their priorities. For those who want a workaround in the meantime, this solution is available, and it's important that people who use Google Docs are aware of it so they have something to fill the gap until the integrated feature becomes available.

Best,
Jo

For those who want a workaround in the meantime, this solution is available

Jo, I understand that you were trying to be of assistance, but Mark's objection to what you referred to as a 'solution' was a valid one.  His points shouldn't be mitigated by presenting what is clearly a kludge -- as he described it "Using several different packages to create and then insert features, then requiring editing to be done in external packages" -- as a 'solution.'

Cell merging is fundamental to document tables and should be a simple and straightforward action requiring nothing more than selecting the cells you want merged and then clicking on the option to perform the merge.

Mark was also correct in objecting to the complex workarounds provided by some posters here because all of them serve to let Google off the hook, probably further delaying its providing the actual feature (if indeed it ever intends to) rather than leaving its users to rely instead on the intricate user-provided workarounds.

My impression of the workarounds I've reviewed is that those who have posted them don't really think of the real-life circumstances in which they're to be used.  If you only need to merge cells once or twice in a document, the pain these alternatives offer in place of a standard cell merging feature isn't so great.  But if you do a lot of cell merging these workarounds are not really a solution at all because of all the steps they involve to get the desired result.

Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Gill 9/14/14 2:57 PM
I agree - and also it is necessary that docs imported from Word including tables with merged cells to remain intact. We just have to keep faith and be patient - the Gdocs team are definitely aware of this issue. As Jo says, we are mostly volunteers here. Google do not announce future plans, so I'm afraid we can't give you any idea of when, or indeed if, this much needed feature will be implemented - but hey, I'm an optimist :-)

What would be really useful idea, is to list the missing features that you would normally expect (and are available is other similar packages), in a drop down or menu. I have been in the scenario (and i am sure this has happened to many others) where you have a dealine, boss breathing down your neck, and you have chosen to use Google docs. Get deep into the task and find something that you just expected to work, doesn't, or is not available, like merging cells, or inserting a text box. Then you have to export into another package, reformat to get it to look right again, and loose the collaborative features, and then mumble under your breath.....never again, never rely on this platform...
I have seen this "not yet implemented list" done on other systems, I think?? that Apple does it on their collaborative system....just come out, tell us what is missing, and let us make the decision on whether to use Google docs, or LibreOffice or something else, depending on the whether it has the collabrative, or can we go without a table or text box.
Also if the help could be more contextual would be good. Nothing worse that trying to do something in Sheets, looking up the help and it is referring to Docs, and suggesting things that are just portable to sheets.

Thanks to Google (and volunteers) for at least recognising this is a problem.

kxd7, that combo will take you to a feedback dialogue box. You can also access it this way: Report an issue. When you click on the Help link, you should see Report an issue, and that will open the dialogue box.

I was caught in the same issue, but fortunately I could figure out how to solve this in a good way. It's a little bit troubling, but is the best way I could find to insert a actual editable table.

Step 1. Open a spreadsheet and build your table (make the necessary merges, editions and info inserting). This is the best place (into Google Drive workspace) to edit tables, so try doing all the job here. You will be able to edit it later, but here it is easier.

Step 2. Select your hole work and Ctrl+C it.

Step 3. Go to your doc and select 'Insert>Drawing'.

Step 4. Just Ctrl+V your table into the drawing.

Step 5. Now just 'Save and Close'.

As I said, if you ever need to edit this table you can do so by editing the table into the drawing. I don't know why it is easier to edit a table inside a Drawing than inside a Doc, but it is.

The most frustrating part in addition to the long wait, is when you have lost functionality with the "new" (now not so much) version.

Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Jo S. 9/29/14 9:33 AM
Hello, Nancee. To merge cells in Google Docs, you can do the following:

How to Merge Table Cells in Google Docs
1. Go to Google Drawings (drawings.google.com)
2. Select Insert > Table.
3. Create a table the same way you would in Google Docs.
4. Select the cells you want to merge, and go to Table > Merge cells.
5. Enter the content into the table.
6. Copy and paste the table into your document.

The table content can be edited the same way in Google Drawings.

Best,
Jo
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Nancee Bue 9/29/14 11:46 AM
This did not work for me.  It looked great in google drawing but when I copied and pasted it into my google doc it lost the merged cells and showed all cells.  If it can be done in good drawing why can't they get it in google docs.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Jo S. 9/29/14 12:35 PM
Oh, darn, Nancee. I just tested it, and that happened to me, too. I don't know if something changed recently or I was handling this differently before. But here's what worked: I copied the table I created with the merged cells into Insert > Drawing and the merged cells were preserved. From there I could paste it into my document by selecting Save & Close.

I completely agree that this is quite convoluted and that this feature should be integrated directly into Docs. I know the Docs Team is aware of this request, but keep 'em coming. It's because of outspoken users who love Docs and want to see it improve even more that new and better features get added.

How to Submit Feedback or Feature Suggestions for Google Docs
1. Open a Google Docs document.
2. Go to Help > Docs help.
3. Click on Send feedback (in the bottom right).
4. Type in your feedback suggestions.
5. Press the blue Send button.

Best,
Jo

Jo S.  This did work but I'm disappointed that I can't type in the drawn table in the document unless I edit the drawn table.  They really need to do something about this.  But thanks, this will be a fix for now even if it isn't a very good one.

It's now 3 years since this was posted.  I'm working on a document on which I need to collaborate with partners overseas, and they want to simultaneously work on the document, so Google Docs seems to be the only solution.  But the document has tables in it and I REALLY need to be able to merge cells on it.  Why hasn't this been sorted yet Google.  Sort it out.  Go on, go and sort it out.  It's not like you haven't been asked repeatedly several times over a long period of time by your customers......

Google Docs certainly not the only solution, although that may depend on your other requirements. Here is the list of several real time collaborative editor.

Re: Alternative real time collaborative document editor David J. Heinrich 11/9/14 12:04 PM
This is ridiculous. Over 3 years and Google can't come up with a simple solution? There are people who are paying for Chromebooks who want to use the built-in solutions for their document needs. It isn't like Google doesn't have paying customers.

Does Google want people to give up on their document solutions and move to Microsoft Office Online?

These are very very basic functionalities that should just work, should have always worked, and never should have been overlooked. That a company with the resources of Google has put out this product, which is part of what people are paying for when buying a Chromebook, and then to not back it up with needed development is inexcusable.

Simple inexcusable.

What is Zoho's reputation re: customer service?

Switching only makes sense if it's more responsive than Google.  That may very well be the case, I just don't know.

Also, what about Zoho Docs' compatibility with documents brought in from other apps -- including Google Docs?
Re: Alternative real time collaborative document editor Brett_AUS 11/16/14 6:34 PM
Unsure if Google removed the merging cells function due to Microsoft? Microsoft seems to have a patent on merging cells. The only ones that seems to win in these patent wars are Lawyers and Patent Troll's.

Original Patent US20010049699 A1

Updated Patent where Microsoft Corp is added.

Current Patent US6442575 B2

Almost two years after the message I just read (after I searched for merging Google Docs cells) and it seems as though it is still not possible. AND Google Docs unmerges cells that were merged in the Word file that is imported. While the former is challenging, the latter should not happen.

So, in November 2014 is there still no way to merge cells in Google Docs?
Re: Alternative real time collaborative document editor kxd7 11/17/14 7:31 PM
Microsoft seems to have a patent on merging cells.

This sounds familiar.  I wonder why.

How can Microsoft have a patent on 'cell merging' when it's available in so many other applications?

Unsure if Google removed the merging cells function due to Microsoft?

Cell merging was removed?  What makes you think it was ever implemented?
Re: Alternative real time collaborative document editor Gill 11/18/14 10:03 AM
It wasn't, except by an HTML / CSS hack in the early versions of Writely->Docs when it was still based on simple HTML.
As for the patent, presumably it is a licensing issue - although given that we can merge in Sheets it does seem odd.

This 'solution' has been presented here a number of times, as have the reasons why it should not be considered a solution.

And this thread has become a bit of a merry-go-round (if not a circus), with Google probably sitting by smirking (and that's about all) -- possibly into eternity.
Re: How do i merge cells on a table? there is no "merge" button in the "table" drop own bx? Brett_AUS 11/21/14 2:55 AM
The reason this thread has become a merry-go-round is due to no real and detailed reply from Google. Google are now like Microcrap opps Microsoft and Apple, all about the $$$$ and little else. I won't be thanking Google till we have all those features that were considered essential in a run-of-the mill wordprocessor ten or fifteen years ago.

Those who have bought a Chromebook have a right to expect that, especially when the product is sold into the tertiary education market. Note I say "sold" - which means "paid for", not free.

May be it is not there because it is not deployed to your Google Domain. Try using the main google domain (www.google.com) start from there... I am not sure if this is the reason.

Also, try to refresh your cache ...

And, try Incognito mode.

As with any of our rolled out features, Apps accounts have a setting to choose if the roll out should happen immediately (rapid) or scheduled (in a couple weeks). It sounds like if you don't have the feature, you are on scheduled. Please contact your Apps account administrator if you would like to change the roll out for the future.

Dear Julianne,

I don't mean to pick on you but you appear to be a warm body at Google. As you can clearly see, this thread is several years old. Until you responded, it was not intuitively obvious that anyone at Google read any of these things.

As a matter of customer relations, I respectfully suggest that someone  acknowledge these threads even if there is no solution at present.

I am pleased that I can now merge cells. There are, however, other limitations I would like to see addressed such as being able to suppress headers, footers and page numbers on individual pages; and starting new page numbering from any spot in the document.

Lack of interaction from Google discourages participation in improving the product.

Greater interaction will encourage greater adoption of Google Docs.

Is this maybe something that was on a staggered rollout and it hasn't got me to me yet? I mean, it's been ten days now...

Is this maybe something that was on a staggered rollout and it hasn't got me to me yet?

It seems like that may indeed be the case.

For all those looking for a merge 'button' or other shortcuts, as far as I know (and assuming the feature is available to you), the only currently-available method is to select the cells you want merged and then click on the 'Merge cells' option in the Table dropdown menu (undo via 'Unmerge cells').   There may eventually be other ways, but for now I think that's it.  It does get the job done.

Hi Julianne,

I see the announcement, but there are no directions about how to accomplish this.  Is there some sort of update that I need to allow?

Hi, KBechtel.

The experience in my organisation was that the service was available for nearly a week, then it mysteriously disappeared.
As of this morning, 'Merge Cells' has returned.  The lesson here is that it may not have been rolled out to your organisation yet.
As with everything Google: patience.

Lisa, drag your cursor through the cells you want to merge to select them. Then either right click (and you'll see "merge cells" in the menu that will appear) or select Table > Merge cells.

Best,
Jo

Now the next thing we are waiting for is the option to split cells.

The work a round is to add an extra column or row and merge the cells where necessary
