|Error 404 When Printing Google Doc||jsaipe||2/4/13 3:39 AM|
As a business we use Google Docs to upload PDFs and share them with our customers. When sharing, we allow all customers to "comment only" (or sometimes "view only") in the share settings.
However, when customers try to print the documents, it takes them to an error 404 page. This error happens on Chrome and Firefox. Given that the print icon is displayed to "comment only" viewers, it would indicate that printing should be allowed. So how come it doesn't work?
The only people who seem to be able to print docs successfully are editors or the document owner.
I've Googled this problem and cannot find a resolution.

If I understand this correctly, this is definitely not a sharing problem. If it was then a message would have been displayed that the person is not allowed to print which will never happen cause print access is not blocked regardless.
404 error props up when there are network issues like low bandwidth.
I would suggest try downloading the document, open locally and then print. Hopefully that should help.

You've highlighted a thing that has perplexed me. Why would Google publish a print icon and add print options in the file menu if the user wasn't allowed to print via G Docs?
I'm not sure it is a bandwidth or network issue as the problem has been seen by our customers across multiple networks.
Also, the users can't download the file, so printing that way is not an option.

No need to be perplexed Jonathan. The user is allowed to print regardless no matter what. Thats why I thought that may be its a network bandwidth issue but now when you have made it clear its not, I would suggest to switch to chrome.
You did mention that this problem occurs in chrome and firefox. Maybe your client's browser versions are not updated. Print actually is a problem in firefox and other browsers but not in chrome. If you try printing from an updated version of chrome, it should work seamlessly.
Keep me posted on the status.

It's been tested with the latest version of Chrome and still the same problem.

Hmm. Thats strange and if its troubling many of your clients, I think our product specialists should look into this. I'll escalate the same and get back to you on this.

I've narrowed it down....
If you upload a PDF and prevent users from downloading it, when you share the PDF with other people where they DON'T have full rights e.g. view or comment only, when they click on the print icon or select print from the file menu, G Docs takes you to an error 404 page.
However when you enable downloading, the document prints fine.
Our issue is that we need to prevent users from downloading, but aren't so fussed about printing.
Has anyone else seen this error?

Hello- I am a client of Jonathan's company and having the same problem ie I cannot print the document regardless of whether I use Chrome/Firefox. The tool bar gives me an option to print but when I use it I get an error 404 message. This is a 100+ page document which I am frankly not inclined to sit and read online, as it is more of a reference tool that I would like to keep by me and flick through as necessary. Has the problem been escalated and if so any sign of a fix?

Seems to be the same problem described here:
- that is, if a document is set as "prevent users from downloading", the print button is displayed if a logged-in user views the file, and gives 404.
If an anonymous (non-logged in) user displays the file, the print button is hidden.

Perfectly explained by vramdal. Google any response?
|Re: Error 404 When Printing Google Doc||Gaurav Jhamb||2/26/13 1:29 AM|
vramdal's post above actually summarises everything. When you prevent users from downloading and try to print, it gives you error cause for seamless printing a local copy of the doc needs to be downloaded in the machine.
Think of it this way, if you dont allow them to download that means you dont want the visitor to have a copy. Just view on the cloud. Thats it.
But Jonathan, when you say you dont want them to download but printing is OK, your first permission of not letting download actually overrides everything else.
Print button will be present regardless but while printing when its not not able to download a local copy, printing shows error.
Now suppose to enable printing, we allow downloading of your file locally. Then anyone can just extract that downloaded copy form his/her cache of browser files which will again defeat your objective of disabling download.
So you could do one thing. For the pdf files dont disable download. And if you are worried that enabling download is not desired, then look at it it this way. If your customers are able to print but not download, they can anytime scan the prints and upload it to form another digital duplicate of your original.
So then does disabling download make any difference?

Thanks for your post and your workaround suggestions.
However isn't this a usability issue (and therefore a bug) with Google Docs? If Google Docs allows document owners to prevent users downloading the doc, then why is it publishing the print icons/options to users (when they are logged in) when the print option doesn't work? It just confuses users who think it's a problem at their end. So surely this is a bug that needs fixing?
|Re: Error 404 When Printing Google Doc||Gaurav Jhamb||2/26/13 2:58 AM|
I totally agree with you. Why display something that is useless at that point in time. In fact I wasn't even aware that one could prevent users from downloading a pdf until you mentioned it.
Anyways, these forums and users like you Jonathan, help us do better and fix things that arent needed. I have escalated it and the product team will surely fix this soon.
