|Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Jacky H||2/18/14 5:33 PM|
One of the most popular questions we're asked is if Amazon Prime is available/when will Amazon Prime be available?
At this time, Amazon Instant video is not supported. While you can Cast a tab, Casting a Tab doesn’t support plugins and Amazon Instant Video requires a plugin to run. Check on these apps that currently work with Chromecast--we’ll keep you posted as we add more!

|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Joe Ellett||2/19/14 9:11 AM|
Amazon Prime tab casts perfectly from a Chrome OS device. I just fired up a couple of Amazon Instant movies and watched a few minutes of each. Audio and video are perfect. I checked one title in my library and another title listed in Amazon prime.
On a Windows machine it's a little more complicated. Amazon Instant Video defaults to a Silverlight player, which won't work with Chromecast. If you force the player to switch to Flash you can then cast the tab.
Someone else will have to advise if this can be done on a Mac.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||david.king||2/19/14 9:22 AM|
On a Mac, uninstall the Silverlight plugin (Library/Internet Plug Ins - drag to trash) and when asked to install Silverlight for Amazon Prime, click Use Adobe Flash instead.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||MrFunN4Lo||2/20/14 2:34 PM|
Joe Elliot or others, how do I force Amazon to use flash on a win8 PC?
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Joe Ellett||2/20/14 9:33 PM|
Simple. Go amazon.com and then to instant video or Prime instant video. Over to the right near the top of the page you'll see Settings. Click that, sign in and then scroll down to Web Player Preferences. Select Adobe Flash Player. Click Save and you're done.
It's an Amazon thing, not a Windows thing, so this should work with whatever OS you're using.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Richard Matthews2||2/24/14 1:22 PM|
I have followed any trouble shooting threads I can find. I have stated I can get it to work fine on Chrome OS with my Chromebook but it will not even come up on my Android Tablet running 4.2.2 Android. I have tried Both Chrome and Chrome Beta. It has nothing at all to do with Chromecast it seems on the Android it is with flash player not seeing the video just errors out before I even get a black screen?
Then my other question is with Redbox Instant with Android I can play it on the Tablet but cannot get a option to Chromecast it to my Television.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Joe Ellett||2/24/14 5:13 PM|
Redbox is not Chrome-enabled, so the only way to cast it would be to tab cast, and that only works through Chrome on PC/Mac/Chromebook (some models)/Linux.
May I suggest expressing your wishes to Redbox?
Amazon Instant Video is in the same situation.

|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Leif Sikorski||3/5/14 5:14 AM|
Good solution but it won't work in all countries. Amazon recently launched their service in Germany and here they don't allow the fallback to Flash. If you don't have Silverlight it won't play at all.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Joe Ellett||3/5/14 12:18 PM|
Rumor is that it works that way in all EU countries the service is rolled out to.
File a request to Amazon to change to the way the US service works.

Works like a charm!!!! Thank you so much! Doesn't stream as good but there's a reason Flash is almost dead. Glad for the work around.

|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||michael interbartolo||3/6/14 5:54 PM|
you do realize it is Amazon that doesn't support Android because in their twisted mind making Amazon VOD exclusive to the Kindle Fire line is the deciding factor between getting a Kindle Fire or any other Android device. There is nothing preventing Amazon opening up their VOD service to more than just the Kindle fire and Google tv except stubbornness on their part.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Jeff Perin||3/7/14 5:02 PM|
actually you do realize I can use my Amazon on my IPad. I just can't make purchases so I don't understand what you're saying about the video on demand being Amazon keeping to Kindle not the case Google is not allowing it to e
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||michael interbartolo||3/7/14 5:21 PM|
Amazon uses a forked version of Android and uses the Kindle Fire to get folks who don't want an iPad to use their services by using VOD as differentiation between themselves and all other Android devices. Kindle Fire competes with Nexus 7 more than iPad and now that the SDK is out there there is no way for Google to block folks from developing for Chromecast. so not sure how Google is blocking Amazon from Chromecast. if Koush can whip up Allcast certainly the wizards at Amazon can add a Cast button to their app it would just be limited to Kindle Fire and iOS.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Jeff Perin||3/7/14 5:39 PM|
Thanks now I just wish it worked. Right after I made that comment it ceased to work, now neither my note 3 or iPad are able to discover the chromecast on my network only had for less than 4 months. Guess it it's good by Google hello roku I liked it while it worked even with out amazon instant video. Even bought a few movies from the play store liked it's UI better than Amazon
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||michael interbartolo||3/7/14 6:55 PM|
try a hard reboot (hold the button on the chromecast down for 15sec to reset it) then try running setup again.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Jeff Perin||3/8/14 8:18 AM|
Thanks this worked, android phone was unable to do the set up. I had to do it from my iPad but it's able to cast
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Spode||3/12/14 11:04 AM|
Why isn't it supported? You've had plenty of time and you have plenty of great programmers, so what's the holdup? It can't be a technical issue. Does Netflix have a exclusivity clause with Google?
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Spode||3/12/14 11:07 AM|
That makes sense... I was thinking that perhaps Netflix was opposed to allowing another movie streaming service onto what it perceives as its exclusive domain. And that, perhaps, it (Netflix) had enough clout to keep Amazon out.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Joe Ellett||3/12/14 8:21 PM|
Spode, Amazon Instant Video isn't Chromecast-enabled because Amazon has not done it. Google has made the APIs available and can provide technical assistance, but Amazon developers are the only ones who have access to the AIV code.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||dreamscape86||3/17/14 10:29 AM|
You don't have to uninstall Silverlight, just go to your Amazon account page and under "Amazon Instant Video Settings" choose "Adobe Flash Player." That will set it for all browsers on your account.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Simon Wakefield||3/20/14 12:35 PM|
Amazon don't care what device you use, their hardware is pretty much a loss leader for them. Its Android's openness that's almost certainly causing it as it results in so many devices of different sizes, different OS versions and different additional software that developing apps for Android isn't as easy. Netflix didn't launch on all devices and still isn't on all android devices because of this and it all comes down to is the time/money to develop it for each device worth it for the predicted boost in customers and none of the Android devices has a particularly impressive market share so is it any wonder they aren't rushing to spend money on developing the apps

|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||audiobookman||3/28/14 6:26 AM|
im going to add a bit here,
chromecast wont work on the uk version of amazon on demand atm. you have to have silverlight pos installed and there are no options to use adobe.
this has been brought over from lovefilm, the reason why i stopped subbing to them in the first place was the removal of flash.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Simon Wakefield||3/28/14 7:09 AM|
Never understood people's issue with Silverlight myself. Has always worked much better for me than flash on all my computers and with a much less CPU and memory usage
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||audiobookman||3/28/14 7:36 AM|
Here in the uk we cannot use amazon on demand in the android environment as it uses silverlight only (they used flash before hand), amazon (previously lovefilm) refuses to make this accessible to android devices other than their kindle devices (sky now tv has done it but amazon wont).
I have amazon on demand with my prime account, the only thing i can watch it on is my computer so it gets very little use and i wont be renewing my prime membership unless they fix it.
I dislike silverlight as it stops me consuming services i pay for in the way i see fit, i dislike not being able to watch things on my chosen devices - flash allowed this where silverlight wont.
I will take the extra cpu load everytime.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||John Dowe||4/2/14 8:54 AM|
That's all well and dandy if you watch your content on a computer, but most people prefer to watch on their TV, tablet, phone or using media streamer like Apple TV, Roku, Google TV, Chromecast, etc
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Simon Wakefield||4/2/14 9:36 AM|
Sky however haven't done it with NowTV though, they picked a handful of Android devices that they deemed it cost effective enough to support. And that's with the major selling point for their product of access to Premier League Football and first run movie and TV. The problem for Amazon with Android is that even if they did a NowTV and selected a handful of popular devices to support their potential market on these devices is even lower as it only appeals to those willing to take out Prime. It will purely be a case of them evaluating the time and resource cost required to develop the app on each android device and the number of users its likely to attract.
Would be great if they did add Android support but those claiming its being held back to push Kindles are just ignoring Amazons general policy where selling services is more important than their hardware that doesn't make them much money.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Simon Wakefield||4/2/14 9:38 AM|
But Flash itself doesn't automatically allow that as most of those device don't run Flash either. They run custom apps with custom video containers

|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||garbagefile||4/16/14 12:51 AM|
i don't use windows. no silverlight for linux, which means not for chromebooks, android, and other variants
using silverlight to accomplish something that already works well is like saying "hey, your stuff works? let me break it!" for a good amount of the population
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Simon Wakefield||4/16/14 2:15 AM|
What's this fabled thing that works, you can't be talking about Flash because its a horrible, bloated piece of software that hogs system resources, crashes all the time and is a security issue (especially as Adobe have basically stopped developing it on pretty much every platform but Windows). Silverlight does have its own issues but its more stable, has a smaller footprint and can work well on much lower powered systems than Flash. My netbook stutters so badly on HD Flash streams but HD streams in Silverlight are flawless.
Obviously ideally all the web players would be HTML5 and no doubt will in future but as the copyright holders will require DRM as they are scared of losing control of their content (even though DRM doesn't really work) so it needs the technology firms to stop come together and decide on a standard so it can move forward rather than bickering about it
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||garbagefile||4/16/14 2:23 AM|
flash has been working for me on linux and android. i'm sorry that you have had problems with it in windows. i left the windows environment over 10 years ago, as i found it to be bloated.
unfortunately my interest in this subject has been issues with workarounds that amount to rolling back to the last working version of flash before DRM was broken. but i don't see that installing a proprietary piece of software that is meant to work on a windows environment should be considered a viable option since not everyone runs that OS (nor do they want to).
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Simon Wakefield||4/16/14 3:18 AM|
Its not just on Windows though where Flash is bloated though. Sure it runs a little better on Linux than it does Windows but the Linux version was abandoned by Adobe in 2012 so its hardly a viable solution, not with Adobe security history which is worse than Microsofts. Adobe have also dropped their mobile versions of Flash so the same issues are present in Android.
And let's be honest Flash is just as propitory as Silverlight. Its just Adobe didn't cut their losses as quickly as Microsoft when it became apparent that supporting Linux was just flushing money down the drain but you might still be able to use Moonlight (the Linux version) if you want to watch Silverlight videos or there's things like Pipelight so its not like you can't use prime on Linux
Again what it needs is for companies to stop squabbling over HTML5 standard so everyone can switch to that because with the lack of inroads into the market share it seems fairly obviously at this point that Linux isn't ever going to get the market share to make it viable for companies to really invest in making their software compatible with Linux. Or for Andorid it really needs Google to get a bit of a tighter reign on the eco system so its less fragmented to make the business decision to develop android apps at the same rate they develop iOS apps because at this point its no where near as profitable
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||garbagefile||4/16/14 3:24 AM|
with all the android (linux) phones out there and chromebooks and unknown number of linux computers out there (a lot more than you'll ever know), you can't seriously thing that linux isn't a viable OS. we're talking servers, appliances, desktops, laptops, phones...
they got you. they don't have the rest of us
|(unknown)||4/19/14 10:27 AM||<This message has been deleted.>|
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Simon Wakefield||4/19/14 12:38 PM|
We are talking about consumer level so the server infiltration of Linux isn't really relevant. You don't after all use video streaming services on a server do you.
And Androids core may be derived from Linux but its far enough removed that it can't really be considerd Linux. Its like claiming MacOS is Unix. Android apps won't just run on Linux and vise versa.
Linux's penetration hasn't really happened. When you look at market share graphs over the years Linux is almost a flat line and even with ChromeOS being included in the figures recently its only seen a minor bump. Steam machine may give it a decent bump if it doesn't get broken out of the Linux figures or if they don't get classified as 'personal computers' but how many of those people will actually ever enter the Linux environment?
If it had a chance of being commercially viable as a consumer level OS then Adobe wouldn't have dropped support for Flash on Linux and Miscrosoft having invested a fair bit into Moonlight wouldn't have stopped development of it. Let's be honest when Vista has double the market share even now despite being one of the worst attempts at an OS ever produced (and it was much higher) and even Windows 8 which is far from the best received OS's has over 9 times the market share and is growing it doesn't really suggest its ever going to have enough of a market share to be anything more than a niche market for commercial companies

Allan, you need to complain to Amazon. Amazon so far does not want to "play ball" and Google holds neither a magic wand nor a large calibre fire arm:-)
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Kevin C. Smith||5/21/14 9:45 AM|
If that's their thinking, it's backfired in my case. I rarely buy Amazon Prime instant video because of it's limited hardware support. If they supported Android, at least current versions, it would be hands down my preferred purchase route for video.

I don't think you understand. Google made the Software Development Kit available for free many months ago, to any provider who wishes to make a Chromecast App or web capability. It is HERE
So it is up t providers, not Google. Your comments are better put to Amazon. Why they continue to throw up barriers is how they choose to do things. Google has done all it can.

I'm using an LG G2 smart phone and am patiently waiting for an efficient way to stream Amazon Prime instant video to my Chromecast. Seems silly that I can't get it to work. I tried Google Cast but it doesn't appear to be compatible with my phone, as there is no download link in the Chrome Webstore, just a link to be reminded.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Joe Ellett||7/7/14 5:45 PM|
An LG G2 is an Android phone, so you need to install the Chromecast app from the Play Store.
Google cast is a Chrome browser extension used on PCs, Macs and Chromebooks.
Cast-enabling Amazon Instant Video is up up the Amazon team. They're the only ones who can add the necessary code to their service. Google has made the SDK available to anyone who want to use it. Please let Amazon know of your desire to have then casts-enable their service.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||LudachrisGSX||7/8/14 7:47 AM|
I already have Chromecast installed and have been using it without problem. So if I have Chomecast I should be able to cast the browser already?
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Joe Ellett||7/8/14 11:49 AM|
From a PC or Mac you can do that. From an Android or iOS device, not yet.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||LudachrisGSX||7/8/14 12:55 PM|
So basically, no way to watch Amazon Prime video on my LG G2 android phone with Chromecast.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Derek Schaefer||7/8/14 1:25 PM|
You are correct. Amazon has the tools (the Google SDK) to make their videos available for Chromecast streaming. However, this is essentially what you get from Amazon if you try to watch a Prime video from your Android phone: "This item is not available for your device." HBO, Netflix, Hulu, RedBox and many other streaming video providers have cast-enabled their video services. Amazon probably will not. Amazon is promoting their own Fire brand of phones and streaming devices, so they don't want you to purchase an LG phone and watching their videos on Chromecast. They want you to purchase a Fire TV box for $99. Then, you can watch your Prime videos on your TV with ease. I agree that this scenario stinks, but they have us by the grape nuts in this instance.

|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Rave12||8/9/14 12:34 AM|
Correct, the option to disable Silverlight and use Flash player to play Amazon instant video is restricted by region and is not currently available in the UK; probably because Amazon have a rival product to Chrome cast called Amazon Fire TV. (I have a Chromecast and its the best £30 i've spent in a while, although limited in content compared to the Roku, which is slightly more expensive)
But fear not there is another option to Chromecast, Roku and casting in general! admittedly not as neat as casting etc. but it costs a lot less.
Buy a long HDMI cable (if you have a sky box unplug the HDMI cable from the back of your TV). Plug the HDMI into the HDMI slot on your laptop, the laptop screen will show exactly the same on your TV screen(if not there is a button on your keyboard, F4 on mine, which you might need to press a few time until the screen shows on your TV)
When your on Amazon Prime (or any web site) all you need to do it hit full screen and your watching just like you would be casting. Problem is you have to get of the sofa to switch the viewing content once the programme you are watching is finished (unless your HDMI cable is super long)
If, like me, you can''t be bothered to get off the sofa, install a FREE piece of software call Unified Remote Server (there are other similar software available, so take your pick on the one you like best). You need to install it to both your laptop and iOS or Android device. Unified Remote Server allows your phone or tab to act like a remote mouse for your laptop (you could also just buy/use a bluetooth mouse)
Hope this helps, Let me know how you get on :0)
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Rave12||8/9/14 12:41 AM|
P.s. the beauty of unified remote server is that it also has a keyboard. So once you have plugged your laptop into the TV with a HDMI cable
you can close the lid (make sure you have change the 'close lid' option to 'do nothing' in your laptop power settings). tuck it away behind the TV, and sit back.

Is there any chance that chromecast is going to have amazon instant video? Or will there ever? I use my app from my iPhone. Just curious;) Thank you
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Joe Ellett||8/9/14 8:03 PM|
Audra, the question is not whether Google is going to have AIV, it's whether Amazon is going to add casting to their AIV service. Google has provided an SDK so any company can cast-enable their service. A service has to use the SDK to code support into their site. Although most of the other large media streaming services have seen the benefit of cast-enabling their services, Amazon to-date has not. Please let Amazon know of your wishes.

|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Jorge Nario||8/28/14 6:26 PM|
The following fix has been proven to work on an Apple computer (mine) and I actually suspect it WILL LIKELY also work fine in Windows because this "fix" works on the Amazon side of the equation.
To try it do the following.
As everyone knows the issue is that Amazon VOD prefers using Silverlight and Silverlight and Chromecast don't work well- notice "prefers" not mandated. If you go in your browser to the Amazon Instant Video Settings and Devices page in Amazon (url is amazon.com/video/settings ), scroll to the bottom to the "Web Player Preferences" section, select Adobe Flash Player, and then click Save. Voila! Now go to the tab where you were trying to watch Amazon VOD, reload page and click watch (start from beginning) or whatever other choices are available.
I've done this from a Mac running Snow Leopard (yes it's the older OS but so much faster) but it also works on latest Mac OS (Lion, Maverick, etc). MOST IMPORTANTLY I don't see why it wouldn't work from windows, as it is an Amazon option you are changing!. But I haven't verified in Windows.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||Joe Ellett||8/28/14 11:59 PM|
Jorge's procedure works well in the US, but people in other countries don't get the choice to switch to Flash.

As of the most recent chromcast update (mine refreshed this morning), this work around no longer appears to work for me. The image works, but now the sound does not (like when I had previously used Microsoft Silverlight instead of Adobe Flash). Has any one else encountered this and found a solution?
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||avdavisross||9/8/14 8:52 PM|
I just found this forum by googling with the same issue, Meagan. Amazon with Flash was working for me a few days ago, but it has no sound now :(. Phooey, I'll have to get off the couch, boot the PC attached to the TV, futz with the wireless mouse, etc to watch Orphan Black. Boo.
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||avdavisross||9/8/14 9:03 PM|
Wait! I poked further in the forum, and found the note about the recent Chromecast update. It said that tab casting would work best wtih Chrome v37, and sure enough, mine was v36 pending an update. I finished the update and sound is working again! :D

I do not get the opportunity to refuse silverlight, it is essentially saying take it.... as there is no other option.
In UK, using a MAC to cast, page comes up, but can not click to full screen, as nothing happens on TV... as in it's not casting. HELP
|Re: Is Amazon Prime available on Chromecast?||david.king||10/6/14 11:19 AM|
Lee, casting a tab doesn't support plugins, hence you can't use Silverlight.

This option to change video preferences is nowhere to be seen on the UK Amazon site.

Any word on when it will be available?

Hi guys - You can use PlayOn to cast Amazon Prime to a Chromecast without changing the default player. Works with Silverlight just fine.
BTW, switching to the Flashplayer also disables HD which is lame
PlayOn supports Amazon US, UK and Germany. You can browse the PlayOn server using the PlayOn mobile app and cast directly to a Chromecast.

If you can not disable Silverlight you can cast the entire screen to the Chromecast also known as mirroring.
* To mirror select the Cast extension
* Select the drop down arrow (top right-ish)
* Select Cast entire screen (experimental)
.note. If you have two or more screens you might want to disable them whilst mirroring, or your Silverlight video will only fill half the screen.
A more detailed guide can be found over at http://allaboutchromecast.com/chromecast-how-to-guide/how-to-use-chromecast-to-share-desktop-screen-and-audio-to-tv/
If you are in the UK the link to change the video settings can be reached from https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/video/settings?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0&

Let us not forget that Amazon (Amazon Prime Instant Video) and Google (Google Play) are competitors, so it's no wonder that Amazon is not going to make it easy to view their videos with Google's Chromecast.
FYI - the "use Adobe Flash instead" option no longer applies, but it is possible to switch to Flash in your account settings (scroll way down) from the Amazon Prime page (must be logged in of course). Flash is not quite as smooth as Silverlight for instant video, but it is tolerable.

Amazon is only hurting themselves, not Google. I have 3 TVs, 2 Chromecast and one Roku on them. I currently only have Netflix and am looking for a second service, thanks to Netflix new 2 TV rule without paying more. My choices are Hulu + and Amazon Prime. Obviously I can't choose Amazon Prime, so they lose, Hulu wins.

Jacky and the Chromecast Team
I just purchased Chromecast and am disappointed that it doesnt work with Amazon. Is there a workaround for ipad iphone or windows? Unfortunately I am forced to stay in a windows environment right now.
Will you be releasing an app update or patch that will allow it to work with Amazon?
Or should I return it and get another source?
Thank you and I love it except for the Amazon issue.

It is up to amazon support Chromecast but since they have their own proprietary streaming set top fire tv box and fire tv stick I doubt they will support Chromecast anytime soon.

Since this post is nearly a year old...Is this still the case? Has Amazon Prime been added? Thank you!
