New Chrome Window not focussing if another Chrome Window already open sharkbait72 2/10/12 4:19 AM
Google Chrome version 17.0.963.46 m : Windows 7 : No extensions

As far as I'm aware, this has only started on the latest update. If Chrome is already open, when I open a new window of Chrome from a shortcut in the quick launch area of my Windows toolbar, the new window does not take focus, the focus remains on the previous Chrome window. If the focus was not on the previous Chrome window when I launch the shortcut it works fine.

I also have this issue, not sure what date it started but it's definitely happening to me too, and so irritating when you're so used to just typing as soon as the new window is launched.

However, I uninstalled chrome and then downloaded and installed again, change homepage to new tab instead of Google (as address bar searches anyway so no point in bloating it.) and now it's all working again

Thanks for your suggestion, I tried removing Chrome and re-installing, then changed settings to new tab but the problem remains, when a Browser window already has focus, the new one will not take focus, so whether it is a new tab, page or whatever, the focus remains on the previous window.

Oh yes, you're right! it still has same issue for me, think i pounced on that solution and testing a tad quick.. It's fixed it for first open windows but like you say, once a window is already open, there isn't any focus on the new window.

I'm sure this has happened before with Chrome too and then suddenly another update and it started working again.

Liam

Just to add, that my focus doesn't stay on previous window, it simple has no focus on any object. e.g. if you click reply box on here, then open new window and type, it doesn't type within the reply box.

Same problem for me with clean Windows and Chrome installation
Re: New Chrome Window not focussing if another Chrome Window already open JJInnSoft 2/24/12 8:00 AM
I have this problem too.  I've seen it happen on:
1.  My Windows 7 64-bit computer at work (a custom-built PC with a clean install of Windows; when middle-clicking Chrome icon on taskbar)
2.  My personal Windows 7 64-bit Lenovo laptop (when middle-clicking Chrome icon on taskbar).
3.  My older personal Windows Vista 32-bit Lenovo laptop (when clicking on shortcut on Quick Start taskbar toolbar).

It's very annoying, because I expect to be able to start typing the URL immediately instead of having to first click into the Chrome window.

The problem still exists in 17.0.963.56.

If a chrome window is currently in focus and I click on quick launch icon the new chrome window becomes visible, but it doesn't have keyboard focus - I see cursor blinking in address bar, but typing doesn't work.
If another application is currently in focus (not chrome) then clicking on quick launch makes chrome appear in background (behind all applications).

It looks like that daily updates (or they too silently) of google chrome have stopped which makes google chrome less annoying, but they still have to fix bugs.

seems to be working for me now, sometimes takes a second to focus though, if I start typing before then doesn't get/keep focus but if i open and leave a second (literally) it works fine

I'm having the same problems, No focus on new chrome windows, they open behind programs, etc. I've uninstalled Chrome and installed the latest version and it keeps doing it.
It's absurd that I've seen so many threads about this problem and not even one has an answer from the people at google.

I just installed "17.0.963.66 m" and this still happens.

Chrome had a similar issue but that was a while ago. This annoying one started 2-3 weeks ago. If I look closely, I'll know that the focus stays on quick launch, not on the browser's address bar, but the cursor does blink there.

How can one report this issue to Google?

Same issue here. However, I've noticed something else not mentioned so far.

If you open a new Chrome window and start typing but DO NOT press return, and leaving what you've just typed as it is, open a new Chrome window and start typing (again in the address bar of the new window) it works just fine. But if on the first window you pressed enter after you've typed something and then open the second window, the second window does not have focus.

And yes I have enabled "Instant for faster searching".

Same problem for me, running 17.0.963.78 m.

As mentioned before, if I wait about 5 seconds after opening a new window, then I can type into Google (my home page) and it works.  I noticed that 5 seconds after opening Google, the bottom left corner says "Waiting for plus.google.com...", and after that went away is when I could type and the focus worked.  So then I signed out of Google, and the focus problem went away.

Might be a problem with Google+??

This is so annoying - have begun switching back to firefox as its beginning to cause a lot of problems.

Same problem for me, with 17.0.963.83 !

I fell stupid typing on my keyboard, the time that I realise that nothing is happening on screen...

Same here - on version 18.0.1025.142 m

I was using Chrome for many months and this wasn't happening. Just started for no reason I can yet identify.

I shut down the chrome frame support task which seemed to resolve the problem.

This is my symptom as well, however I agree with shocker-z that there is no focus for me at all on any window when I open a new chrome window.  If I press alt-f4 after new chrome window comes up I get the shutdown/hibernate window instead of just closing the app.

Chrome must be the one focused when a new window is opened in order to witness the bug.

If I open a new chrome window with another app focused chrome will open up behind that app and again all will lose focus.

Re: New Chrome Window not focussing if another Chrome Window already open JeffLamour 4/13/12 11:26 AM
After a bit more testing I see that focus actually stays on the taskbar.  If you turn on autohide you will notice that the taskbar does not go away after the new chrome window loads and the new window does not receive focus.  If you press the application key on your keyboard you will see the taskbar menu appear indicating that the taskbar has focus.

I've noticed this only happens when the browser is maximized. When the original window is not maximized, the new window gains focus as expected whether launched from the task bar or through the start menu.  New windows launched with Ctrl+N also behave as expected, but obviously don't load you home page.

I can confirm this, if the window opens full screen the focus is still on the taskbar. Otherwise the focus is fine.

I had this issue too, which is why I ended up in this discussion ;)
For me, the problem was a third-party app, used to scroll in inactive windows, called WizMouse.

Try deactivating any additional applications you may have running, to see if this is the issue.

FIX THIS ALREADY! I'm being having problems with this for more then 6 months now. The feedback from GOOGLE on various issues (including problems with Android) is nothing short of pathetic. Google makes great products but their support is non existing!
Re: New Chrome Window not focussing if another Chrome Window already open PhilmanCJ 5/9/12 9:11 AM
I just found that Dexpot was causing the issue. If I turned it off chrome worked fine. I do not know why yet.
Re: New Chrome Window not focussing if another Chrome Window already open AvalonNYC 5/18/12 2:25 PM
Agree.  Back to Firefox for me.   I open windows all the time from the start menu or taskbar, and this change is a major annoyance.  I was already getting pretty annoyed that there's no native way to have Chrome warn I close a window with several tabs; this is the last straw.

I just found the origins of the GChrome Bug and developed a way how to bypass it.

By naming the pop windows differently you can open a new window on Chrome and maintaining focus in the new pop window.

See the attached file which contains small sample files, all html type.
Follow the instructions to simulate the bug and also how to bypass GChrome bug.

Hope this can help you with a workaround until a better solution does not come from GChrome Developers Team.

Good Luck!
