YouTube Video Background Appears Grey in Chrome but White in All Other Browsers HigherMathHelp 17/09/14 09:04
Hi all!

BACKGROUND:
I am making free screencast tutorials that teach people math. In the videos, I write in various colors on a white background. The white background is a conscious choice, as it provides optimal contrast. I also record in 1280x720 HD. When I produce the videos locally (on my own computer), they look great. After uploading to YouTube, the videos also appear as desired on my Windows 7 machine when I use Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer. The problem only occurs in Chrome.

PROBLEM:
When viewed in Google Chrome, the white background appears as a dim grey. The contrast is negatively affected and the videos become difficult to watch.

VIDEO SAMPLE:

Below is a video by another YouTube creator that demonstrates the problem; the video simply shows a plain white background, for testing.

Thanks for your help!

Hi HigherMathHelp,

Thank you for posting and sorry you're running into this issue. Do you know if you experience this issue when you are in the incognito mode? Do you have a theme installed in Chrome by any chance? If you do, I would try and remove it to see if you are running into the same issue.

Best,
Kevin

Hi Kevin!

Thanks so much for your reply. I tried watching the video in incognito mode, and I experienced the same issue: grey background, not white. I also posted in the YouTube help forums and received the following answer from user epontius:

"Chrome will default to a different video encoding using an open source HTML5 video codec.
The other browsers such as FireFox, Safari and IE will default to using Flash.

So could be any number of things from the way the video is being encoded (such as a different gamma setting) or played back by the player.

I would suggest not trying to manipulate your video to adjust for the difference.

The greyish background doesn't bother me in your videos. I find a pure white background to be fatiguing on my eyes."

I might just follow this advice. If you don't mind, what do you think about the white versus grey? You can try checking out a test version of my video (http://youtu.be/Nhb05EVKHiM) in Chrome and another browser (Firefox, IE, Safari).

I've done some research on which background colors people prefer, but more data is always helpful. I'm curious, because I plan to make many more videos with this format.

Thanks again!!
Greg

Hi Greg,

Sorry for the late reply. Regarding the white or grey background, I think the if you decide to do a white, it should be more on the off white color than just the white because it can tired out the eyes. I think the grey works too. Have you tried disabling Pepper flash to see if you are still running into this issue? Try doing that and see if that makes any difference. Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Kevin

Hi Greg,

Did you ever find a solution to this problem as I'm having the same issue ?

Hi Jasbir!

Sorry for my slow reply. Initially, I didn't find a solution, and I decided to leave the videos as they were, since there appear to be proponents of both background colors (white and grey).

Today, however, I noticed that the background in my videos is now white! I did not do anything to effect this change, so I imagine Chrome made some kind of change under the hood.

I hope the problem is fixed for you too!

Good luck,
Greg
