Make "Other Search Engines" Default (Help Google not default search engine!) crog62 4/24/12 6:34 PM
I accidentally deleted Google from my "Default search settings" (Wrench->Basics->Manage Search Engines). I can add it back as an "Other Search Engine" but can't figure out how to make it a "Default search engine" so I can make it the default via "Make default".

By the way, this happened because of the sucky viral Babylon search toolbar. Avoid it like the plague. True crap.

Thanks in advance
Craig

Thanks for sending this - it doesn't address the question I asked. There does not appear to be a way to add to the "Default search engine" list of search engines, though you can delete them. How do I do this?

Thanks,
Craig

So, originally there was not "Make default" button but I think the query string I was using malformed. I pulled the string from another Chrome install and put in:

{google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}{google:instantFieldTrialGroupParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

and then the "Make default" was availalbe.

I'm set - thanks!

Thanks so much for pasting "{google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}{google:instantFieldTrialGroupParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s"

this was not obvious on either the help screen or where is says paste % in place

@crog62

Thank so much mate! Google is awesome but sometimes they are just plain stupid.. You couldn't find that information (that you pasted) in their support section! Thank you so much for sharing this!
Thank you thank you thank you!

@crog62 Hear, Hear! It pains me to agree that the poor dears just don't know (or care ?) how much work it takes to get this stuff right.

I found that even when I put in the right search string from your post above and got the "make default" button, it was ineffective until I'd closed Chrome, reopened it and gone back into chrome://chrome/settings/searchEngines and clicked it again.

All good now, though, thanks to this fine group of superstars.
