Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Peabody 3/8/10 6:53 AM
Chrome often displays this error instead of loading websites. It is typically resolved by clicking refresh once or twice, but should not be occurring at all. I would add 5 seconds to my connection timeout settings, except this setting doesn't appear to exist.

For others to best assist you in troubleshooting scenarios, please also provide the following:

Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Traininguru 6/14/10 4:47 AM
Since yesterday, I've noticed this trend where Chrome does not load web pages on a timely basis. In many instances it would continue to time out and not load at all.

Moving forward to today, endeavoring to load http://www.google.com/ -- even on Firefox, appears to take longer than usual.

Is this a bandwidth issue?

Google: What do YOU say?

Anyone else have any revealing insights?

Replies would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem with my 64bit windows7."Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT)"
The problem is with your IP address and it doesn't matter if you use google chrome or other browsers.
You simply have to renew your IP address in the following way:

1.Get to a command prompt in your startup menu and type: cmd
now you are in command mode
2.type: "ipconfig/release"  (without the quotes ,on the command line by itself)
3.type: "ipconfig/renew"    (without the quotes ,on the command line by itself)

done!
hope this answer can help

Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. msuner 7/29/10 7:46 PM
I wish I had an answer for this but I'm having the same issue: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. I tried going to the command prompt and plugged in "ipconfig /release" without the quotes and got this message: "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation." I've tried unplugging and plugging in the modem, giving it a power boost and nothing seems to work. I have two other browsers (Explorer and Safari) and they both seem to be working. I no longer use Firefox because one of their mandatory updates rendered that browser useless and froze my computer, which is the reason I went to chrome... now this. Does anyone have an aswer?

I still get the Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. and Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to www.facebook.com
I get this on firefox The server at www.facebook.com is taking too long to respond.

Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. davisalvi 8/7/10 11:34 AM
I got the same problem and I thought it was just on my end.

I'm using Vista with the following chrome version below by typing about:version on the browser.

Google Chrome        5.0.375.125 (Official Build 53311)
WebKit        533.4
V8        2.1.10.15
User Agent        Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US) AppleWebKit/533.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/5.0.375.125 Safari/533.4

Some of the things I already did was to clear my cach and temporary internet files and deleted all the cookies as well.  It didn't work.

I also checked my firewall and chrome has access...so it's not the firewall either.

I went and uninstall chrome and re-installed it again, It didn't solve the problem.

What's funny is that it's only Facebook I can't access.  I do remember my PC updated itself yesterday when I was shutting down my PC.  The problem started after that.  Does that mean it has something to do with Microsoft?  I noticed a program called Microsoft .NET Framework 4 client profile which was installed yesterday.

I'm currently trying to do the cmd releasing and renewing my IP address.  But I'm not sure it's going to work as I already had my modem reset by unplugging and plugging it back again (hard reset).

I hope someone can help me solve this.

Oh and IE has the same problem.  It's giving me

I tried almost everything to no avail. But when I went to a mall where there's a wi-fi, I  was able to connect with Facebook again!  Does that mean it's with the IP address?

if there is only facebook that u cant conect, probably there was url blocking on your gateway or network server. you can use free proxy server to connect facebook. try to search on google how to use free proxy
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. DJ Gallster 8/10/10 11:47 AM
im having a simmilar problem on a desktop computer running on XP with both chrome and explorer.

chrome says "Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT)".  it's driving me nuts because i cant get onto Scousebeatz.co.uk and i need that for my career as a music producer, and i cant talk to the person im currently collaborating with.

i tried ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew but that failed, i tried proxy but that failed.

at first i thought it was just chrome getting up to its old tricks again but when i checked explorer a similar error occurred. chrome always has something wrong with it but those problems are usually sorted by restarting it.

whoever is responsible for the maintenance of the internet needs to get their act together!

please can someone help!
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. dayoEn 8/11/10 10:08 PM
@DJ Gallster, take a look at your antivirus, check the firewall. Is it allow  chrome or other browser to connect internet???
But if you cannot get onto Scousebeatz.co.uk only, check the url blocking onto firewall
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Yanz-phnx 8/16/10 5:40 AM
Check anti-virus setting
(for bitdefender user)
try check your bitdefender setting
change the setting, switch UI to expert mode
Look for
- firewall
- rules
- look for - c:\documents and settings\.....\local settings\application data\google\chrome\application\chrome.exe, double click
- the configuration will pop beneath it, double click
- look for ACTION, change it to ALLOW.

Get this from a forum.

Hi

Tried everything that this forum (along with other forums), but i still cannot access certain websites (but i can access other websites).

A churchmate told me its the problem with the internet provider. I called them again and asked them to recheck. on the 3rd time my provider checked, they found that there was an error on their side, and that they're gonna fix it.

so i guess you just have to reiterate and insist to your provider to keep on checking.

hope this helps, coz i know the feeling!  God bless!

In my case , the problem was the setting for chrome  by  bitDefender antivirus. Chrome.exe was denied.

Same error 118 with Chrome. Tried the same of msuner, dayoEn.
Tried also direct internet connection (without proxy) it works!!!
Tried IE that works with or without proxy.
Opera browser has the same problem as Chrome.

In my opinion chrome has an issue in proxy connections with https protocols.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I'm also getting the message

Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out.

IE8 and Firefox 3.6 both working absolutely fine.

Using Windows Firewall - but this is disabled by Group Policy - so no Firewall policy is in effect when on the Corporate LAN

Enabled the Wireless LAN connection, but no improvement

Clicked the tray icon for my Symantec A/V. Got an alert that says Chrome has changed since I last used it do I want to allow it. Clicked Allow and hey presto it worked.

So why didn't the message pop-up like it did immediately with other browsers.

Looks like its going to have to be "bye bye Chrome" I don't have the time or the patience to arse about tripping over problems like this.

this seemed to do the trick for me.  need to observe this for some more time (days?) to be able to tell for sure as this problem seems to be erratic

i went to the below folder to try out the "Popular answer"
c:\documents and settings\.....\local settings\application data\google\chrome\application\

i noticed a zero byte file called "First Run".  I closed chrome, deleted the zero byte file and double clicked chrome.exe in the same file.  The zero byte file was recreated and i could see in the browser window that chrome was suggesting to me a tip that the address bar can also be used for search.  Looks like the browser reinitialized itself.  I am not facing issues anymore after this.

but need more time to be sure.

Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. abhishek202 1/15/11 2:35 AM
now the problem was firewall was not on i solved that one also
just go to control panel>window security centre>window firewall (it is manage security settings
now u have clicked on firewall then a dialog box will appear
there are 3 tabs at the top select the exceptions tab
there u will see a list search the google chrome and check it is marked or selected or not
if not then select it and and click on okay button
if the google chrome option is not there then there is a option "add program" select it find the google chrome where is it installed or u would find it the list easily just select it and it will appear in the list mark it and click ok
then u can ON the windows firewall also
happy gaming

Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Panthe 2/11/11 1:30 AM
Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT):
Sometimes the numerical error code varies, but the text message ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT stays the same.

The websites I get the error with are ironically enough google.com sites.
mail.google.com
google.com/reader
www.google.com (search engine)

My Operating System: WinXP SP3
Chrome Version: 9.0.597.94 (current acc. to update)
Virus scanner: Symantec Endpoint Protection (chrome.exe and Google directory added to exception list to prevent interference)

I did turn off "DNS prefetching".
Same goes for wiping the entire cache and cookies etc.
Same goes for the virus scanner.
Disabled and verified proxy settings.
Tried it all because someone earlier recommended it.

It only happens at work where I am behind a webfilter of unknown origin, unfortunately it's details are kept secret by the company. That's the same reason that limits me to WinXP and no newer windows version. However I can confirm that this is not the sole reason for Chrome to fail to load pages.
Here comes the fun part: it all works fine in Internet Explorer 8.
Despite the fact that IE8 and Chrome share the windows-wide proxy settings, so it's certain that they both use the same connection. And IE8 works flawlessly.

Any ideas? Please !
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Panthe 2/11/11 2:13 AM
Unfortunately, also confirming that it is not the local firewall.
Google Chrome is added to the exception list and allowed to connect to anything on the net.

To describe the behaviour more thoroughly:
I load 2 random websites in 2 different tabs just fine.
Then I load GMail in a 3rd tab. It loads the main page, fails to fill in the frames Chat, Google Documents and Calendar. The tab then becomes unresponsive with the message "Sending Request..." in the status bar, takes a good 30sec to time out until a gmail popup appears stating that not all content could be loaded. After waiting for another minute of unresponsiveness I can open mails, browse labels and compose mails in plain text (not rich text, causes more freezes).

However if I open another tab doing a simple google search I get the "Sending Request..." again for 30secs, and then the message "ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT" appears. No partial loading like on mail.google.com, just the error message. Same goes for various sites on the web, to name one example: threadless.com.
The error seems to show up more often on AJAX heavy sites.

Also, while one tab shows "Sending Request..." in the lower left status bar, no other tab can load anything! Even sites that normally would work. I have to wait until the tab in question times out, and only then a site that normally would work can load again.

GMail and plain normal google searches work fine though in IE8, Opera, Firefox on the same machine. I think it's safe to say now that Chrome causes the problem somehow.
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. N1thz 2/13/11 7:09 PM
Yes, same issues as Panthe, does anyone have a solution??????????
Pages load on the other browsers but Chrome just freezes, clearly not firewall issues...
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Janetta 2/20/11 6:51 PM
Same issue as Panthe. I am now using Firefox without any such issues. Would really rather have my Chrome back.
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Panthe 2/25/11 12:49 AM
Peabody,

Hitting refresh twice does not help. Instead it replicates the error twice, and thus making me wait another 2*30sec before I can do anything again.
I'm pretty sure that extending the timeout by another 5 seconds would not help in my case.
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. N1thz 2/25/11 2:25 AM
Absolutely, I've been forced to stop using Chrome because of this and I've had no problems with the alternate browser
It used to take at least 5 minutes for the error to rectify itself and the page to be displayed. Then within a minute, its gone again.. extremely annoying when you're trying to get something done!

Hi all,

For those still having this issue can you provide the following information: Google Chrome version, operating system, list of extensions installed, specific webpage URLs and whether those same URLs work in other browsers or not? You should also follow the instructions in the article below to Adjust your proxy settings and Make sure Google Chrome is allowed in you antivirus and firewall settings. If this is only an issue in a work environment, you should consult your IT department to determine if there is a corporate proxy set causing the problem.

@Panthe, can you try typing chrome://net-internals/#proxy into your address bar? Then click the Clear bad proxies button and try navigating to websites that previously gave you the error message. Are you successful?

Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. fusion06 3/4/11 12:03 PM
I found out the problem to mine..although i can't guarantee  that it'll solve your problem but..1st,normally my wireless network connection only shows a list of connections but only one connected and that's from my wireless router..but then i noticed when i had my cell phone connected,it showed a second connection called network 7. crazy thing is,when i have the cell phone connected and the network 7 showing, THAT'S when i have trouble. i can get on some sites, but other sites like facebook,my banking sites..basically any sites i have to type a password to get into..times out and gives me an error 118.But as soon as i un tether my phone, alls fine. wierd but true. hopes this helps some of you.
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Panthe 3/7/11 3:02 AM
@Gwyneth_Bee,
I tried chrome://net-internals/#proxy and it showed 3 of my workplace proxies/webfilters in the list of bad proxy servers. Cleared those, reloaded, and had the same error still. The list of bad proxies showed the same 3 again.
However the chrome://net-internals are fun to play with, thank you for that :)

So here goes my system information:
Google Chrome version: 9.0.597.98 (Official Build 74359)
Operating system: Win XP SP3, classic theme
List of extensions installed (enabled):
AdBlock (has *google.com whitelisted)
goo.gl URL shortener
Proxy Switchy!
Readability Redux
RSS Subscription Extension (by Google)
Send using Gmail™ (no button)
Smooth Gestures

Specific webpage URLs and whether those same URLs work in other browsers or not?
gmail.com aka mail.google.com fails 100% of the time. Works fine using Firefox, IE8 or Opera on the same connection.
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Panthe 3/7/11 3:08 AM
PS: I disabled the extension "Proxy Switchy!" for the duration of another connection test, and it failed again (sending request...). Just to rule that one out.

Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Panthe 3/31/11 11:37 PM
@ Gwyneth_Bee

I am delighted to share positive news on the issue.
THIS IS NOT AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE.
Sorry about choosing this date to post actual progress.

At work our Windows domain clients are forced to use a Proxy PAC automatic configuration script, named contentfilter-proxy.pac. The domain guidelines prevent me from changing that manually.

However the Chrome extension Proxy Switchy is capable of circumventing that but that's not the point. I did my tests without the extension to prove it is working, but maybe someone finds that helpful.

The PAC script contained a ruleset of IPs when to directly connect to a server (mostly within LAN) and to default to one of three proxies. Chrome would not work with just using the PAC script as parameter.

Like you suggested, I used 1 of the 3 proxies as a startup parameter.
And voilá!
No more "Sending request..." until inevitable doom arrives.
It works!
Both my test sites for this case (gmail.com, threadless.com) run like a charm.

Thanks to you, Gwyneth_Bee!

I could get here in 5 seconds, yet when I try to go to http://uploadables.com/download/11107-Need_for_Speed_Hot_Pursuit.rar, it gives me the timeout error. Super-outraging since its the only site that I want to go to right now and its the only one that won't work. Really a coincidence >:O

For you web developers on Windows, this may be of some help:

I was able to get past this issue by having Fiddler open while signing into my Google Apps accounts. Suddenly, everything worked perfectly.

Notes on my setup:
Windows 7 Enterprise, behind a proxy server
Chrome 11.0.696.71

I saw this error whenever I tried to sign into Gmail and my Google Apps accounts. Note that this only affected Chrome; I was able to sign into my Gmail/GA accounts just fine when using Firefox.

I had the same problem with my 64bit windows7."Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT)"
The problem is with your IP address and it doesn't matter if you use google chrome or other browsers.
You simply have to renew your IP address in the following way:

1.Get to a command prompt in your startup menu and type: cmd
now you are in command mode
2.type: "ipconfig/release"  (without the quotes ,on the command line by itself)
3.type: "ipconfig/renew"    (without the quotes ,on the command line by itself)

done!

Solved!
If you are running Peerguardian, Peerblock, Moblocker, or IPblock, close and restart it.
This resolves the defect for me.

I followed DoctorAli's instruction

Opened up cmd and typed in ipconfig/release then enter. After that ipconfig/renew and enter. Walla, works like charms again :3

I am sure it is something to do with Google's set up.(Seems they are having some technical problems ?)
I have been running a radio station on google sites, it was working fine till July22 and then suddenly when I loaded my web site the audio players would not load it just said "this web page is not available" on the spot where my media player was placed on the web site.
I also have a New York Times technology feed placed on my web site from the Google apps that also does not load !
cache has been cleared on my chrome browser also tried on Fire Fox same thing
I also cannot load any apps when i edit my page

Google Chrome has a shitload of problems. Like it just sits there when you try to load a page, DNS failure error, bad at running java, etc. These problems don't exist in IE9 or Opera though

CHECK which FIREWALL is active first, then make sure Google Chrome is allowed FULL access to the internet through the aforementioned FIREWALL.

Windows Explorer had the same problem.

I am using Windows 7 totally up to date.
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. jjpitman84 2/14/12 6:14 PM
I was completely unable to open any webpages and kept getting Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. I tried going to the command prompt and plugged in "ipconfig /release" without the quotes, didn't work; rebooted my modem/router, didn't work.

I finally checked my firewall settings and allow Chrome full access (by default it only had 'outgoing' access) and it works flawlessly now.

Try this (it worked for me anyway)...

UNINSTALL GOOGLE CHROME COMPLETELY, THEN RE-INSTALL IT.

NOTE: Doing this will also uninstall any Chrome Apps you have installed (TweetDeck, AdBlock, etc.) so make a note of which extensions you want to re-install. The good news is, your bookmarks will remain intact. Good luck.

Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Gkoritko 3/22/12 9:45 PM
Thats wrong You get help that does nothing the code stands for a net block of some shape or form i currently have the same error but it only happens when i try to go to the cpanel im using But magically works after using a proxy so that means i was temporarilly banned
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Gkoritko 3/22/12 9:46 PM
What if you have a static ip then you would have to contact the isp correct?
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Gkoritko 3/22/12 9:51 PM
Prolly because you were ip banned generally happens after spaming or hitting multiple links at the same time flooding the server and JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS If you are running a router ipconfig/release and renew WILL NOT WORK beacuse you have a static ip and at that point you have to contact your isp Now thats not saying that all routers wont work with ipconfig/release and renew because iv personally seen cases where this works with a router set up But i belive there are ways to set that up and i believe u have to do that through ur isp
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Gkoritko 3/22/12 9:56 PM
Dude proxies ARE NOT THE ANSWER they have slower speeds people want to know what this error is and why its not letting them get to these sites the best explantion i can give everyone is because your getting ip banned maybe temporary maybe permanent but if u get ip banned the only other option besides masking ur ip is to change it and now a days thats mainly done through ur isp unless you know how to configure router settings to a T
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Gkoritko 3/22/12 10:00 PM
i tend to think its to do with cpanel now that your saying that i think it automatically bans people for doing certain things with chrome and other web browers iv been searching for a solution myself i dont want to contact my isp to renew my ip the only reason i think this though is because i currently get the same error tying to connect to cpanel and the webpage on the cpanel i cant even connect to the ip at all (running a dj site) so when i try to tune it i doesnt work but if i use a proxy it works so somewhere theres an ip ban
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Gkoritko 3/22/12 10:01 PM
Tends to be the case but may of turned out that your ip was getting banned as i said earlyer iv looked at over 150 pages of this bull crap already and seems like NO ONE actually knows what this error stands for they all think they do

I'm not running Windows Firewall, so this isn't the problem for me. One of our network administrators pointed to a Microsoft KB article about IPv6 tunneling causing problems on Windows 7, I tried the fix in the article but I'm still experiencing timeouts. At any rate, it's interesting reading:

Same problem here.

Fresh install of Wondowx XP Pro x64 at home. I can ping anywhere, the connection stays on and stable, but I only get like 3 out of 20 tries on most websites. IE7 and Chrome timeout.

Chrome is updated; XP x64 is updated. IE7 just updated. I tried all the solutions except resetting the modem. I even tried:

"netsh winsock reset" and then reboot.

to no avail. I'm getting desperate too. . .help!!

Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Lewis_McReuw 8/18/12 2:14 AM
I got this problem some days ago, and I did found a solution:

If you use Bitdefender as your antivirus and firewall, you should go to the main menu and than under security select configure firewall (or something like that, I'm translating from dutch here)

In the pop-up that opens, go to the tab home network (again, translated from dutch, it's the third tab) and change the configuration of the network you're using to Yes in the third row.

I suppose that other antivirus programs cause this problem.

Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Ekon01 8/18/12 8:42 AM
Well I got it fixed, but sadly it's not a real solution or workaround for many. In my case it turned out to be the router playing up.

My machine uses WiFi to connect to internet and they had recently got a new 100Mbps MTA from the ISP and installed an old ADSL router big enough to handle the load. The router was causing the problem. They changed the router (I don't know this model and brand) and problem solved !

Thanks to all for your support :)

Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Jimjamsansey 8/19/12 8:10 AM
Not sure if this thread is old or not, but I am having this problem as well. Chrome was originally telling me that there was a problem with my DNS, but it started giving me this message after I fixed the DNS settings. I've tried rebooting the modem and router, and that usually makes it work for about 10 minutes. I'm pretty sure its not google chrome because safari, Uplay, Steam, Origin, Minecraft, and everything else except for Skype can connect. No idea why skype is the only one that can connect. I've checked and its not my firewall either
Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. Panthe 9/13/12 2:13 AM
Still no solution.

I've had the problem ever since and it is almost certainly connected to my companies DNS servers and/or transparent proxies, in conjunction with Chrome.

When using Firefox for the last year (whenever I had to) there were no such problems - to this day this remains my no#1 workaround.

Re: Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. petomiro 9/13/12 9:37 PM
Hi,

I've read through this entire thread and I don't think anyone has answered the question directly.  Unfortunately, I can't either, but have the same timeout problem and so would really like an accurate answer.

The question, clarified:  "Can the timeout time be manually adjusted in Google's Chrome or not?"  Just need a yes or no first, then maybe a bit of explanation.

Thanks.

This is another one of those situations where Google either feigns ignorance or provides generic 'solutions' that do not address the problem. You can be assured they know about this...they just won't admit it.

Experience has shown that Google will eventually fix this, once they figure out how.
