|Chrome lost all of my passwords...||taward||6/23/10 7:50 AM|
Please describe your question/comment in detail (for example, steps to reproduce the problem):
All of my previously saved passwords vanished.
When I do the following:
Wrench>Options>Personal Stuff>Saved Passwords: Highlight URL and username then click "Show Saved Password"
Nothing happens. My passwords were there before, gone now. I haven't installed any new extensions, no reinstalling of chrome, no new programs, nothing.
Google Chrome version: 5.0.375.70
Operating System:Windows 7 Ultimate x86
Extensions installed: too many to name, but none that weren't present and active when my passwords worked fine and none that have anything to do with passwords.

Have you run a CC-cleaner or do you remove temp files?
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||taward||6/23/10 11:54 AM|
I have not done either of those. I clean out temp files periodically, but I haven't done it in at least a week. Should I?
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||Stefan vd||6/23/10 11:56 AM|
strange that you passwords are lost.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||taward||6/23/10 12:31 PM|
Strange indeed. It smells like some sort of corruption, either of the file it self or some interference with the encryption. I took a look a the file using a decoder I found, and the passwords are gibberish (which may be a function of encryption or corruption, but I can't tell the difference.)
I can't figure out what the catalyst was or what the remedy is. And it is REALLY frustrating.

My guess is data in the Default folder is corrupt. Let's all shut up for 5 seconds to mourn the loss. But now head to the Extensions Gallery and install LastPass.

|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||taward||6/23/10 1:44 PM|
@QQ Thank you for the suggestion (and the mourning ;). What would be ultra helpful is if someone could point me to th exact file the houses the passwords. I am pretty maniacal about backups and I know that I back this folder up on a regular basis. I haven't done it in a few weeks, but i also haven't gotten too many (if any really) new passwords in that time. If I could reach back into the archives and roll that file back (as opposed to rolling back the entire folder), I would be grateful and satisfied.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||guiwegian||5/18/11 7:05 AM|
Chrome keeps losing my password for no apparent reason, I have to constantly re-type them in when I log in my account. This problem have been happening since the early age of Chrome, I have had this issue with either Chrome or Chromium, and with either Windows or Ubuntu.
Very annoying, never had tis trouble with Firefox.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||kurtclement||6/8/11 8:25 AM|
What might of happened is that you or someone else logged in to the same sight and chose not have Chrome remember their password putting the site in the never remember category. If you go to preferences/personal stuff (Mac) and manage the passwords you can remove the sites from the never remember category.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||guiwegian||6/8/11 9:03 AM|
@kurtclement , I always click on 'remember my passwords', so that couldn't happen, no one else is using my computer, I think we are trying to make excuses here rather confronting the fact that there is a real problem. It is very bad for usability.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||mattwestcott||6/10/11 2:22 AM|
I just had this happen to me, while I had a Chrome update (12.0.74291) queued up and waiting for a restart - restarting the browser brought the saved passwords back. Presumably the upgrade process silently updated the format of the passwords file in a backwards-incompatible way, meaning that they were left inaccessible until I was running the new version...
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||chylld||6/10/11 3:56 AM|
Happens to me all the time. If I go into my passwords list now, about 3/4 of them are blank!!
12.0.742.91 / win7ultimate64

For you guys who lose passwords regularly, remember to set up Sync. That's what I would do.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||Jtenor||6/29/11 11:02 AM|
Well... this is my second post today... and I´m quite hungry.
First in a XP SP3 Chrome couldn´t star with the 'Waiting on cache' bug. No way to fix this. Back to FF.
Second now, using Chrome in MacOSX, the passwords have simply disappear. No error, no crash, nothing, just disappear.
So for me it´s a mix of pity and a shame having this. A waste of time and value data, a total disaster.
So by now I´ll stay with Safari and FF, at least are solid browsers.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||chylld||6/29/11 3:00 PM|
I also went back to FF. For me the small performance benefit Chrome had was far outweighed by having to open FF and look up my passwords!!
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||Jamie Pate||8/23/11 10:58 AM|
i'm having this problem as well, and I do have sync set up
w7 64 pro
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||Jamie Pate||8/23/11 11:07 AM|
also my localStorage seems to have been cleared (i lose my passwords on a regular basis)
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||armlet||10/21/11 7:10 AM|
I lost all my saved passwords on one computer. I didn't do anything differently.
1. Wrench->Personal Stuff->Manage Saved Passwords:
I got 2 empty boxes: i. Saved Passwords; ii. Never Saved
Not a single item on the list.
2. I opened one of the login pages and enter username/password manually and selected to save the password
3. Again, Wrench->Personal Stuff->Manage Saved Passwords:
All items before I lost them are displayed, BUT all their password field is BLANK, show or hide, except the one I just entered.
This is nothing comparing with what's coming next:
4. I opened Chrome on my ANOTHER computer
5. Wrench->Personal Stuff->Manage Saved Passwords:
Every entry is beautifully sitting there. This is wonderful because I have setup sync for everything.
But wait! What is happening?!!!
The passwords field is being cleared up one by one in front of my eyes!
This is the story how I lost all my saved passwords on 2 computers.
I have total of 3 computers that are Chrome synced.
6. I opened Chrome on my LAST computer
7. Do this REALLY QUICK: Wrench->Personal Stuff->Stop syncing this account
8. Set up sync...
9. Signed in with my another Google account
All my saved passwords on my last computer are safe now. But I should have unplugged the network cable before I opened Chrome to be safer.
Now what should I do about the sync?
I am afraid if I setup sync on my first 2 computers, the same story might happen again!
I don't know what to do at this point.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||armlet||10/21/11 10:13 AM|
Continue on my post
First of all, correction:
Wrench->Options->Personal Stuff->Manage Saved Passwords
I finished syncing all my saved passwords from my 3rd computer to the other 2 computers which have lost passwords by doing the following:
On my first 2 computers, make sure to stop sync:
10. Wrench->Options->Personal Stuff->Stop syncing this account
11. Manage saved passwords
12. Manually delete ALL passwords items, with or without blank password field
13. Set up sync...
14. Log in with my "another" Google account mentioned at step 9
15. Wrench->Options->Personal Stuff->Manage Saved Passwords
All saved passwords are synced back.
I think to delete the blank password entries is important. Otherwise with those blank password field entries, whenever starting sync, all passwords would be cleared again, because the blank password entries are newer.

I have sync on my two pc account, unfortunately in the show saved password, Chrome displays all the usernames, but doesn't display password, anyone having this problem, any solution?
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||ilovejc10934||1/27/12 8:56 AM|
I have this too. The password entries are there, and they have the username field right, they just don't have anything in the password field. I think it's an update problem. I remember the android update where it removed the Market App.

Same here, continually happens to me...passwords GONE....they really need to fix this or I'm going to drop Chrome altogether and go to FireFOx
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||Brun oPaul||2/28/12 3:21 AM|
Done update to Chrome 17.0 release on windows 7.
Lost all passwords, but not login&websites.
Quite frustrating :(
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||Apekiller||3/5/12 5:44 AM|
Just lost all passwords today. What the hell is going on?!?! WTF, now I have to recover password on about 200 sites. Thanks A LOT.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||CH_DM||3/5/12 9:41 AM|
Same here- all saved passwords except a few have now disappeared. The only thing I can think of is this is due to something with their policy changes. Worked last week, and now the data is gone. I did not erase, did not change any settings. I did nothing out of the ordinary as I have been doing for the past 2 years. Google did something. My system was not compromised. Specific passords simply disappeared and when I type in the password and elect to save it, it's no longer stored after checking if it were saved. Glad to have Safari and Firefox for situations like this, Would have been nice to stay with Chrome, but until they are able to save the login settings again, gotta go with something more seamless.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||nimloc||5/3/12 10:06 AM|
Yes and mine have all gone now too...!! 100 or so passwords!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||ontilt22||5/5/12 8:48 PM|
I've had this happen to me as well. My concern is whether I'm now 0wn3d. It seems odd that I would need to re-enter passwords that were previously saved. The behavior is either a serious bug or some type of hack that is scraping passwords to all my accounts when I re-visit them. A bit concerning.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||tomcec||5/15/12 2:51 AM|
The same happened here (chrome 15.0.874.121 on ubuntu 11.10).
The strange thing is the following: I have the last 3 backup versions of the last 3 days and those files are perfectly the same (md5sum) than the now empty one.
I am pretty sure that, yesterday, for example, I have been able to access web sites protected by password by using the saved password. As if there were some other permanent place where passwords are stored other than "Login Data" Files.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||ontilt22||5/15/12 10:15 PM|
Interesting... 1,000 bots later. No response from the mother ship.
Where are your backup versions located? The only potential benefit of the backups is that somehow the keys to access stored passwords are rotated or discarded, but I suspect I'm overly optimistic there.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||cbergsten||6/21/12 6:11 AM|
Lost all my passwords today, first time it happened to me.
Cant figure out what I might have done to make this happen...
Scary that threads this old with such a severe error has no official solution/response..
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||Fishdrowned||6/27/12 1:07 AM|
I lost my passwords for days, but i didn't realize that they were DELETED by GOOGLE for unknown reasons or bugs, until i checked my saved passwords and got a list of blank items! Seems that the problem is completely ignored, since this post is here for 2 years!
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||giax25||9/11/12 8:22 AM|
I have lost my passwords too!!!
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||Nesoor||9/26/12 11:50 AM|
I have the same and it really sucks.
Google Chrome is already missing basic features and then you get also problems like this.
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||__Moun||11/8/12 5:47 AM|
Same for me!
Is there any reason why Google won't fix this??
|Re: Chrome lost all of my passwords...||Lisa Hughes||11/11/12 6:11 AM|
make sure that chrome hasn't added a new profile in settings - I had mine set to cloudy, and it changed to one i'd never seen before -deleted it and everything came back ;)
