Google Chrome causes system restart when too many tabs opened Helo222 5/29/10 10:54 PM
Chrome Version Info
Google Chrome        5.0.375.55 (Official Build 47796)
WebKit        533.4
V8        2.1.10.13

When I open multiple tabs on Google Chrome (Usually between five and eight though no specific number has emerged) the browser crashes and forces my computer to do an automatic restart. No error message, no freezing, no locking up, just a click on Open In New Tab, 3 second pause, system restart. It happens with different websites ranging from LA Times to Hotmail and does it with no warning or indication that a certain type of website might be causing it.

I have the same problem, I'm going to back to Firefox.

I have been using Chrome since it first came out, and this just started happening to me as well. Took me a day of experimenting to figure out it was related to Chrome and too many tabs.

did a search for those terms, and came across this post. Have not found a solution yet. No Chrome updates available as of today.

Please someone get me a fix (an explanation of why would be nice too, since it only just started happening). I like Chrome way better than other options - I don't want to have to quit using it over this issue.

PS. System restart is on Windows XP SP3, I recently installed some reputable anti-malware programs which may be causing a conflict, but that's all I can think of right now. (Ad-aware, Spybot, and Advanced System Optimizer).

Same situation as Helo222 - no warning, no messages, just a pause then poof! - RESTART. I was afraid of the fateful XP worm from the early days of Windows XP reemerging at first.

Me, too...frustrating that it only happens sometimes

I just now opened 100 tabs in Chrome and it took it like a trooper. I could have had even more but my finger got tired. It's not Chrome's fault. Something else must be causing it.

So, sorry to sound a little tweaked, dwight.stegall, but that answer didn't help anybody. Obviously, not every Chrome user experiences this problem, but obviously some of us do. We are here to find out how to fix it, not to find out how many users don't have a problem with this.

Everyone else:  I was able to narrow this down a bit. In the startup and recovery advanced options in the system properties (windows XP, right click my computer, advanced tab) - uncheck the restart on error option.

What used to be an instant restart is now the blue screen of death. The error message indicated that there was a hardware resource conflict. While it wasn't a problem with Chrome malfunctioning per se - something about opening many tabs in Chrome initiated the conflict like clockwork, causing a fatal error. XP by default restarts on a fatal error instead of throwing a message (that's what the checkbox is for)

My system underwent a reconfiguration since then, and the conflict caused by Chrome appears to not be happening anymore for me. While it's nice for me that I'm not having the problem anymore, unfortunately, this means I don't really know exactly what the conflict was. I'm leaning toward believing it was a memory controller, or something related to physical memory.

Advice, check all your hardware drivers and make sure they are up to date. You can check for device conflicts by following directions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/133240

There are programs out there to help identify out-of-date hardware drivers as well, some free, some not. Google it.

I am having this problem on both a vista and windows 7 machine. All hardware drivers are up to date. I get 1/2 blue page and loose keyboard and mouse - except the right click becomes the left click. All that is running is chrome. I can usually use the mouse buttons to logoff. when I log back on all is fine - until I open lots of tabs. Very repeatable. My homepage is my igoogle page. I really like Chrome, but this is very frustrating.
