+Andrés,

Check out the attached article.

I agree.
1. The documentation implies it works by default on windows computers. It does not.
2. The instructions don't specify what kind of value (REG_SZ or DWORD) is required. If you use REG_SZ after a reboot it prevents a connection being made. If you use DWORD connections can be made, but everyone can still see the remote computer.

I don't even see that registry entry in Windows. What am I missing? Love to have the Curtain mode please.

Anyone figure this out yet? I do not see that registry key.

I do not see the registry key either. Any luck anyone?

I tried again when I had two computers side-by-side and can confirm it does work.

You have to create the registry key as a REG_DWORD and value of 1. Reboot the computer.

blockbrow, thanks for this info.

Looks like it should be configured as follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome]
"RemoteAccessHostRequireCurtain"=dword:00000001

I've not had two machines side-by-each to test, but that's my interpretation of your confirmation.

Thanks! It worked!

I don't even have a Google folder in this reg location, so I can't create a new key.  Any ideas?
Re: How can I activate the curtain mode on Chrome remote Desktop? mrbene 9/7/13 6:59 PM
You can take the text that I provided originally and paste it into a .REG file (instructions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310516 ).  Try exporting an existing key (via RegEdit) to double-check the format.

You can also add the "folders" that contain keys in RegEdit directly.

I guess I whiffed on the New>Key and clicked on String.  All good now...
Re: How can I activate the curtain mode on Chrome remote Desktop? btsang 9/23/13 10:42 AM
Is this really work?

I've tried to add the key in varies times, but can't seems to be able to make it work. With the key in, it will end connection after a few second of "white" screen. Removing the key works again with the screen being display.

I've read from another forum posting (dated back in May) that this feature is not release to public yet and putting this in will cause RD to "offline". Not sure what this means and if this is the issue I am encountering.

Any pointer on how I can make this work?

Re: How can I activate the curtain mode on Chrome remote Desktop? mrbene 9/23/13 2:13 PM
Works for me - I've attached the REG that I exported from my registry.  Make sure to open it with a text editor first, to see that I'm not doing anything nefarious.

Also, reboot after making the registry change.  I did this for all the machines I access, so don't know if it doesn't work if you don't reboot.

Re: How can I activate the curtain mode on Chrome remote Desktop? btsang 9/24/13 12:51 PM
Same as what I put in, and I did reboot after putting that it (and tried varies times restarting the service without luck). It's on a Dell laptop with Win7 64bit.

btsang,

you are seeing exactly what I originally saw. for some reason mine is working now, but a colleague has done the same thing and is getting pause and disconnect experience with the registry key there.

When mine started working I put it down to the fact that I tried to add the value while I was remoting the client. But my colleague was adding the value, rebooting and testing from a another client in the same office.

mrbene's reg files looks exactly as I have it configured, so there looks like another piece to this puzzle to find.

With the registry key added per proper attributes, I too get the connect/pause/disconnect error, never actually getting to the remote desktop.

With the key set to 0, I can connect just fine ...

C'mon Google, what gives?!~

Re: How can I activate the curtain mode on Chrome remote Desktop? mrbene 10/15/13 2:45 PM
ljgpdx - did you reboot the machine on which you modified the registry?  Consensus seems to be that this is required.

This has been working for me since early September, and continues to work today, on a mix of Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines.

Re: How can I activate the curtain mode on Chrome remote Desktop? ljgpdx 10/15/13 4:57 PM
mrbene - Yes, have I ever rebooted! -- multiple times, testing different settings, including adding the key for firewall traversal.  The only way I can connect is either without the require curtain key, or with it set to a value of 0.

Not sure what the issue is, but it is quite frustrating to not be able to set curtain mode!  Curious, does the default key, reg_sz, need to have a value, or can it be left unset?

Thanks

Re: How can I activate the curtain mode on Chrome remote Desktop? mrbene 10/15/13 6:02 PM
Interesting - my read of the notes about the firewall traversal registry key was that it _blocked_ access if it was set, but I've not reread that doc recently.

On my machines, the (Default) reg_sz has data (value not set), which is probably what you're seeing as well.

OK, block of text.

In "normal" mode, Chrome Remote Desktop basically screen scrapes what is actively displayed.  In "curtain" mode, Chrome Remote Desktop seems to generate an instance of Window's native Remote Desktop, and use that to render what gets sent to you.

As such, I would test Windows native Remote Desktop on the same LAN as the machine you're trying to get to work in curtain mode - make sure that's working, since it seems to be a critical component used by Chrome Remote Desktop when in curtain mode.

Re: How can I activate the curtain mode on Chrome remote Desktop? ljgpdx 10/15/13 6:34 PM
Right -- the firewall traversal key is intended to force network traffic over specific ports.

Your comment on curtain mode seeming to generate an instance of native RDP server is very interesting, as I have previously modified my registry to allow Win 7 to listen on a different port for RDP, and modified my firewall accordingly.

I suspect that it is this system modification, for security reasons of course, that is causing my error.  Now to explore firewall rules, ports, etc in hopes of solving the issue.

BTW, RDP on from LAN and WAN works just fine ... with the exception of a recent issue with remote access using Reminna on Ubuntu via an SSH connection to my router running DD-WRT.

Thank you for your comments, especially on curtain mode using an instance of RDP server...

Re: How can I activate the curtain mode on Chrome remote Desktop? dan17 10/17/13 10:20 AM
So maybe curtain mode isn't possible on windows versions that don't include RDP server functionality?  (i.e. non pro versions) I can't get it to work on my win8 home system, I'll have to try it on my win7 pro.
Re: How can I activate the curtain mode on Chrome remote Desktop? ljgpdx 10/17/13 11:31 AM
dan17 -- Perhaps yes, but in this case, as I run Win 7 Ult., this is not a factor ... my hunch is that is has to do with chrome remote desktop config. requiring firewall rules and registry settings to default Windows RDP server/host settings.
