Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc chairmanlaue 6/29/12 4:44 PM
I have done a fresh install of chrome, and now it appears searching from the address bar is taking me to google.com - the search results page seems to show for about a half second - then I get redirected to (actual URL):

https://www.google.ca/blank.html#hl=en&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=this%20is%20a%20search&oq=&gs_l=&pbx=1&fp=3d62bddb4ee8241b&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1440&bih=783

Seems like odd behaviour to me - not sure if it's a setting I have or if it's another issue - but it's pretty annoying having to directly navigate to google and type in the search - as opposed to just using the address bar. I realize in the big picture it's not something thats totally broken, but I've gotten used to the convenience of using the address bar and would love to have a solution.

I just posted a question on this.  I have the same problem.

If I wait 10+ seconds after typing the search keywords before I hit enter/return, I can get the results page.  If I go quickly (hit enter as soon as I finish typing the keyword, I get the blank page.

Is everyone having this same behavior?

New Update - EDIT 4:
We have resolved this issue. If you are still getting a blank page when searching from the address bar (omnibox), please let us know.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey folks,

Thanks for your reports. Can you let me know more about the following:
  • Your operating system (if you have not already)
  • Your Chrome version (if you have not already). Go to Wrench > About Google Chrome
  • Does this only happen when you search directly from Chrome's address bar (omnibox)? What happens when you navigate to www.google.com first and search from there?
  • If you answered yes to the above, please go to: Wrench > Settings > Search > click on Manage search engines > where you have Google as your default search engine, copy and paste the contents from the URL textbox.
  • Go to Wrench > Settings > Show advanced settings > Privacy > what options do you have selected in this section?
  • When you do perform a search from the omnibox, and the empty result page returns, what is the URL on that page?
EDIT:
If you try searching from an Incognito window (Ctrl+Shift+N) in the omnibox, is the blank results page still reproducible?

EDIT 2: We are investigating this issue on our public issue tracker. You can receive updates on this issue by clicking the star next to the issue number.

EDIT 3:
One more question: Go to Wrench > Settings > Privacy > Show advanced settings > Privacy > is "Automatically send usage statistics and crash reports to Google" selected?
Re: Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc ben.packard 7/2/12 2:45 PM
This is now resolved for me.
Re: Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc wanttosearch 7/2/12 3:30 PM
1. iOS 5.8
2. Chrome version 20.0.1132.47
3. Yes, it only happens from the omnibox. From google.com it searches fine.
4. The URL textbox says:
{google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

5. In Privacy everything is checked except spelling errors
6. When redirected, the URL is: https://www.google.com/

Re: Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc rancal 7/2/12 3:52 PM
1. Windows XP 64bit SP3.

2. Chrome: 20.0.1132.47 m

3. Omnibox only.

4. URL Textbox: {google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

5. Everything checked except:
- Use a web service to help resolve spelling errors

- Automatically send usage statistics and crash reports to Google

6. https://www.google.com/blank.html#hl=en&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=test%20google%20search&oq=&gs_l=&pbx=1&fp=14ce7bb5d7f62fe3&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1096&bih=702

All search results get changed to a blank.html#... result.

Re: Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc Flapjack00 7/2/12 3:58 PM
I am having the same problem. I just noticed it when I logged in today. I am using:

Windows XP
Chrome 20.0.1132.47 beta-m
As other said, it only happens from address bar. I can use google.com.
I am redirected to: https://www.google.com/blank.html#hl=en&safe=off&rlz=1C1CHKZ_enUS436US436&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=test%20search&oq=&gs_l=&pbx=1&fp=401f71c3f23dc7d1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1152&bih=669

Search engine info:

{google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

Privacy all selected but last 2

Thank you for any help.

Re: Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc Tribunal 7/2/12 4:03 PM
Me too :c

1. Windows 7 64 bit
2. 20.0.1132.47 (returns up to date)
3. Yep, just the omnibox
4. {google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s
(I have not changed this setting, and certainly not within the last two hours)
5. Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the   address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
   Enable phishing and malware protection

All selected. Again, hasn't changed recently (or shouldn't have)
6. https://www.google.com/blank.html#hl=en&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=google%20&oq=&gs_l=&pbx=1&fp=6ca89bf727e3a9a1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1920&bih=955

I had to go into my history for that last one, it appears to be working correctly now

Re: Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc Azerial 7/2/12 5:34 PM
It only seems to happen when instant results are loading and I hit enter. For example:

1. Open Chrome
2. Place the cursor in the Omnibox
3. Enter a search query and hit enter quickly. Ie Jira. DO NOT ALLOW Instant to finish searching.

Another way to get it to repro 100% is to DISABLE Instant. Then every search result will end up with a blank.html# url.

Windows 7 Enterprise, Service Pack 1
Chrome Version 20.0.1132.47 beta-m
Happens only when searched from the omnibox

Re: Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc Sie_Deen 7/2/12 5:46 PM
@wanttosearch, it sounds like you are actually seeing a different issue, as you are redirected to https://www.google.com/, instead of an empty page with google.com/blank.html?{bunch-of-parameters-etc}
Can you try creating another entry for google.com as your search engine, and make it the default? This help article contains steps to add a search engine; enter http://www.google.com/search?q=%s as the URL, and make it your default search engine. Once it's set up, try searching from the address bar again, and let me know what happens.

Had the same problem.  Went into preferences and changed "Set which search engine is used when searching from the omnibox" from Google to Yahoo and then back to Google and this fixed the problem.  For what little that's worth.

Uninstalled a few extensions, turned off the rest and cleared browsing history. issue persists.

OS: Windows 7 home premium SP1
chrome 20.0.1132.47 m
I can search fine from google.com, only the omnibox throws the #blank issue
URL text box is google.com,(checked for extra spaces) following that is: {google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

This also just worked for me but only for 1 search, then it went back to broke. Now I can't repeat the fix. that was weird.

This has made me realize I do not miss having to go to www.google.com everytime I want to search something. Oh how the internet has wreaked havoon patience.

Re: Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc michaelj800 7/2/12 6:47 PM
1. OSX 10.7.4
2. Chrome Version 20.0.1132.47
3. Only happens when using the omnibox. I can use the search box on Google.com just fine.
4. Google search is my default and the url is:  {google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s
5. All but "Use a web service to help resolve spelling errors" are checked.
6. Here is an example URL from a search I conducted that yielded a blank page:  https://www.google.com/blank.html#hl=en&safe=off&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=testing%20a%20search%20engine&oq=&gs_l=&pbx=1&fp=b26565741496f254&ion=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1852&bih=1062
7. When searching in Incognito mode, it operates just fine.

Something else I noticed is if I empty my cache, the search works once or twice.

Re: Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc Erik3 7/2/12 6:55 PM
Your operating system: osx lion
Your Chrome version:  20.0.1132.47

It works if I search from the website.

{google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

In the privacy settings I have every box checked except for spellcheck and auto send usage statistics

This is the address when I searched for test:

Just noticed this as well.

* Windows 7 Pro SP1

It's a little off and on, but it seems to happen mainly when I hit enter before the instant search results from the omnibar kicks in.

Yes, only in the URL bar. Navigating to www.google.com works fine
I don't quite get what you mean here, but I assume it is the following

Typing google this into the address bar:

Incognito Mode, typing google this into the address bar:
https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1TSNF_enUS436US436&sugexp=chrome,mod=17&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=google+this

Incognito mode works fine.

Having same issue.  Parameters:

Windows 7

v. 20.0.1132.47

Problem is present only when using omnibox to search.

{google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

Privacy:  First four boxes (of 6) are checked.

All search results come back with this at the beginning:  https://www.google.com/blank.html

No more Blank

Just started having the same issue.  It started immediately after installing Chrome browser on my new Android phone, but I am not sure if it is a coincidence or not.

Your operating system: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Your Chrome version: 20.0.1132.47 m

Does this only happen when you search directly from Chrome's address bar (omnibox)?: Yes

What happens when you navigate to www.google.com first and search from there?: The search works from www.google.com, just not in omnibox.

Copy and paste the contents from the URL textbox: {google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

Privacy options:
[x] Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
[x] Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
[x] Predict network actions to improve page load performance
[x] Enable phishing and malware protection
[ ] Use a web service to help resolve spelling errors
[ ] Automatically send usage statistics and crash reports to Google

When you do perform a search from the omnibox, and the empty result page returns, what is the URL on that page?: https://www.google.com/blank.html#hl=en&safe=off&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=foo&oq=&gs_l=&pbx=1&fp=7bdadbd16ce43520&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1366&bih=653

If you try searching from an Incognito window in the omnibox, is the blank results page still reproducible?: No, the search works correctly.

I went the "make your own" engine way - the name and .com/whatever link are irrelevant, but putting this URL in the third box

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=%s

then making that the default works.

Re: Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc Karybdis 7/2/12 9:38 PM
Apologies for the lack of clarity:

Copy and paste: {google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

from the default URL for the Search in omnibox (Wrench->Settings->Manage search engines) into any new search you want.

This will preserve the Google code for Chrome until the default is de-corrupted.

Had the same issue just started today.

Found a fix:

Go to Wrench-> Settings -> Search -> Manage Search Engines
-Delete Google.com from your default
-In the lower window "Add a New Search Engine", type:
Google -> Google.com -> http://www.google.com/search?q=%s
-Click
OK, then hover over "Make Default" and click it.

Somehow the default query was corrupted or reset. This puts it back into the format required.

Karybdis' solution worked for me too but this needs to be corrected as something getting corrupted like this by who knows what source worries me a lot. I mean, is it for sure that chrome hasn't been compromised? I've seen some websites react in a somewhat similar manner after being infected with malicious code.

Given that this fixes it, I don't have a recommendation on whether you keep the original or not. It might make sense in case something is hard coded and the Chrome dev team makes a change.

On the other hand, it may be entirely pointless to keep the original

I'm having the same problem.

I'm using Windows 7 64-bit, Chrome version 20.0.1132.47. It does only bug for the Omnibox searches; searching on Google's home page works.

My URL textbox reads {google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

My privacy settings are the first four options checked, the other two clear.

The URL for an Omnibox search is https://www.google.com/blank.html#hl=en&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=all%20your%20base%20are%20belong%20to%20us&oq=&gs_l=&pbx=1&fp=6ca89bf727e3a9a1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=960&bih=494

Searches resolve normally in Incognito mode; I do not get the blank page.

An update. Turning off Instant Search in my Google search preferences page-- not Chrome, but the search engine options page where you can adjust Safe Search, etc.-- fixed this problem, so it's probably a bug with Instant Search, not Chrome directly.

There's no word yet on what exactly is causing it, but various Google Chrome users are reporting that searches from the omnibox / address bar that go nowhere. While the instant results appear properly, once the user hits enter they're sent to a blank.html page that's just that, blank. There's a Google Groups thread 116 posts long of people noticing the issue going back a few hours and we're seeing it on our end also. In the thread, users suggest going into the settings menu, selecting "Manage Search Engines", adding a new search engine with the url http://www.google.com/search?q=%s (it can be named anything) and then making it the default as shown above

Does this only happen when you search directly from Chrome's address bar (omnibox)? YES

What happens when you navigate to www.google.com first and search from there? IT WORKS

If you answered yes to the above, please go to: Wrench > Settings > Search > click on Manage search engines > where you have Google as your default search engine, copy and paste the contents from the URL text box.:

Re: Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc alluran 7/3/12 12:54 AM
You never had an issue with MSIE because you were stuck on version 5.5 for the last 15 years.

You never had an issue with FF because, like MSIE, you probably had the non-auto-updating version last time you used it.

As for testing, I'd like to see you write a suite of test cases for Chrome. It's much harder than you think. Sure, now that everyone's found this bug, you'll start your list with "Check that google search redirects properly", but before this happened, what makes you think you would have come up with that as a test case?

Also, the search technically still works. Something, somewhere is redirecting to blank.html. That could actually be google, not Chrome, only redirecting users that are logged in.

Regardless, I think you're right, you really should go back to IE. You clearly don't understand what Google hoped to achieve with Chrome, and you certainly have no appreciation for the things that they have already achieved over the last 3 years, and the progress that this browser has pretty much single-handedly brought about in the World Wide Web.

Re: Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc Zon-ze.com 7/3/12 6:30 AM
I have found a solution to fix it.
I just delete it google search and add it again.

before that please save the long google search string in the search engines.

I know other people have the solutions and it works too however, I don't want to

lose google base search string.

{google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s
this is the string if you don't have.

* I will have a post in my website.. I know I had just temp solution but
it didn't work the way it should be. So I test lots to find this.
www.zon-ze.com is my own website.

Re: Chrome : When searching from the address bar, google.com seems to redirect to google.com/blank.html?bunch-of-parameters-etc kulbida 7/3/12 11:20 AM
I deleted the default Google entry in the search engines options. I then added a new one with the old search string: "{google:baseURL}search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s"

Now when I type to search in the omnibox, Chrome no longer predicts searches for me (auto-complete or whatever it is called).

Anybody else have this issue?

I'd like to amend that. What actually happens is that:
1) I type a search into the omnibar
2) the google url (www.google.com) pops up and I find myself on the google.com main page
3) I then have to re-type the search into the search bar on the google main page

If you need me to answer any more questions, I will gladly do so. So pleased to have someone actually paying attention!!!

Is there any way f getting a search box back separately - it's really annoying to search fro something and to then have to type it again or alternatively go to the home page and start from there...

Thanks for looking in to it.

@Q8sarah, if you'd like your homepage to open on startup, go to Wrench > Settings > On Startup > select Open a specific page or set of pages > click on Set Pages > in the dialog that opens up, enter your iGoogle URL (http://www.google.com/ig).
Now restart Chrome (Wrench > Exit > restart Chrome).

As for searching, you can search directly in the address bar. Read here to find out what extra features are available directly from the address bar.
