How do I password protect chrome extensions Jaredlmt 4/19/12 7:49 AM
Hi,

I just setup an extension for parental controls and realized that there is nothing to prevent someone from simply removing the parental control extension if they want to access blocked content.  This seems like a fatal flaw in chrome usability and defeats the purpose of even having a parental control extension.

Is there a way to password protect the chrome extensions?

There is no any kind of protect in chrome.  The ironic thing is there are some extensions that claim to password protect the browser.

You can't password protect extensions yet, but you can force extensions and make them unable to uninstall or disable.

I installed TinyFilter to block content which does have a password protect option using a force extensions registery policy from http://www.chromium.org/administrators/policy-list-3

I attached the reg file I used. Right click on it and choose Edit, then change the nlfgnnlnfbpcammlnibfkplpnbbbdeli to whatever the extension ID is. Save and double to run it.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the help. I was wondering how to reverse this? I have it installed, but what do I do if I want to disable it for some reason? I'm not sure exactly how I got it installed in the first place, so take it easy, please:)

Hold down Windows key + R
Type regedit in dialog box, click continue in the next dialog box
Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Google\Chrome\ExtensionInstallForcelist
Find the key with the name "1" type "REG_SZ" and the data "nlfgnnlnfbpcammlnibfkplpnbbbdeli;https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx"
Right click, Delete
Close regedit. All done!

p.s: you can delete the file you downloaded (the one juitar uploaded) once you have ran it.
