|Most visited sites correct?||Ineda||5/4/09 10:44 AM|
My husband recently updated to chrome. The new tab shows the new most visted sites feature. How correct is that information? Could a site appear in error?
|Re: Most visited sites correct?||StevePaul||5/4/09 4:49 PM|
The new tab 'most recently' visited is taken from your browsing history.
So by default, if you remove items from your browsing history this will be reflected in what is displayed ...
As for things appearing in error, I can't really comment as I'm not exactly sure what Chrome uses to work out what should be displayed ....
Certainly 'till you've (or your husband) been using Chrome for a while I guess this would change on a day to day basis.
Bare in mind that any sites that have been visited in Incognito mode won't be reflected in the browsing history so will never appear here ..
|Re: Most visited sites correct?||StevePaul||5/4/09 5:33 PM|
Would be interesting to know the actual mechanics involved in deciding what appears on the 'most visited' especially as you can delete the history day by day ...
|Re: Most visited sites correct?||StevePaul||5/4/09 5:58 PM|
That might be OK for you Teckies, but it's a bit too much for me :-)
From a logical point of view, I'm guessing it must calculate (?) the most visited when you close Chrome and retain that info for the next time you start Chrome ..

Who was your last post aimed at ...

Haven't got a problem with you ranting, along as its not at me ...
Especially when its a perfectly valid comment !!

I'm trying to figure out how it actually calculates the most visited websites , but I see nothing on the web. Strange.
|Re: Most visited sites correct?||pakoconk||8/3/09 5:23 PM|
Hi Troy, I'm actually investigating the same. I want to make sure a couple of pages remain on the most visited... must be on a temp file, but I can't seem to find it, I've oppened up a thread on this here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=1707462e6fcf0090&hl=en

I don't follow the logic of "When you click on a URL on a website, it doesn't count. Chrome only adds hits for things you've expressively wanted to visit." If I click the link, doesn't that express an interest? And if I'm constantly going to a particular page and clicking a particular link, doesn't they both sound like "most visited sites"? In my mind, 1) the goal is to NOT have to type URL's, 2) the idea is to let Chrome tell me - dynamically - what I am now visiting most frequently, and 3) if I create a bookmark that eliminates the point of 'most visited' on the new tab page. Point 2) also applies to the 'pin' feature, because the 'pin' is not dynamic (i.e., software controlled).

It would be nice to get a clear answer to this question. When I first started using Chrome last year, my gmail account never came up on my most visited sites. My grad school did, which was nice. About a month ago, I cleared my history and started over. Now, gmail shows, but my grad school never does. Could someone answer all of us with this question in a user-friendly, non-techie way?
|Re: Most visited sites correct?||markevens||5/3/11 12:51 PM|
Yes this is a known issue, if you have adware it can try to post incorrect history there to trick you into visiting sites. Usually porn/casinos/cheap knock off materials. Update antivirus and be careful what you install (Incredimail, free scrabble games, free screen savers etc)

your husband watches porn, get over yourself and stop spying on him !
|Re: Most visited sites correct?||dezeray1||5/3/11 4:42 PM|
Yes it is correct. Tell him to use private browsing next time he visits naughty sites.

These people are mocking you. It is correct and there is no error. The top answer was upvoted because of here http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/h3g5b/reddit_saved_a_mans_life_today/

@markevens: I had exactly the same experience. It seems that some viruses tend to update directly the sqlite database that chrome uses and fill it in with bogus addresses, many of which are sites that infect you with even more viruses. The only way to protect yourself is a good anti virus software, but even in this case it is not certain that you will avoid reinfection sometime later on.

I for one have been affected by said virus and found an easy way to remove the virus involving clearing your history (where the virus "lays its eggs" parsee). Whenever you click on an advert it saves it into your history, unfortunately this gives a clear route for people to inject into and cause the effect shown here.
Im Dan Gleebals. Im expected to know this off by heart for my job.

I was visiting a website very similar to youtube about three months ago. It wasn't youtube but it was something like www.youtub.com or something. Every since then my browser was directing me to porn websites and casino websites just like the most popular answer says. Now yes, your husband could have been going to those websites voluntarily. But those websites also could have appeared in error. The truth is that there is no way to tell. Everyone thinks it's funny because your husband could have been going to those websites voluntarily. Or the website could have appeared in error.

|Re: Most visited sites correct?||whereman||9/22/11 2:10 AM|
Viruses can make Google Chrome display bad websites. This always happens in my Chrome and sometimes even the best anti-virus aren't even capable of making them disappear. Don't worry about it, sometimes they will not contain viruses, they will only appear just to annoy internet users.

What causes a site to not appear in the most visited list? I used to have facebook as a most visited page, but since I cleared my history cache and temporary internet files, it no longer appears, even though it truly is a frequently visited page. Other pages do appear however.

Yes, it's accurate, your husband is watching lots and lots of porn. If he's suddenly gotten horrible in bed or is not interested in sex, you now know why.
There is no virus, trojan or spyware that will add to this list. However, if you want a website you visit to not appear, you can use "incognito" mode.

removing a virus by clearing your history? You're cracking me up!

Being an IT professional with over four and a half centuries of experience, I can agree with this.
