why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? MattH77 6/20/12 3:41 PM
Can anyone tell me why my Macbook Pro crashes completely (ie the screen turns pale blue and I have to switch it off completely) when I press "cmd Q" to shut down Google Chrome? There seems to be quite a few comments floating around from people with similar problems but no real suggestions that actually help.

Please help!!...

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? lizisconfused 6/21/12 6:15 AM
Mine freezes when I try to quit it... sorry that I don't have a better answer to help!
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? lordsnow 6/21/12 6:43 AM
I have this problem too with my 2012 MBP 13".  Throws a kernel panic every hour or two, and it's always Chrome in the diagnostic report.  There are tons of threads about this on the Apple Support forums too, e.g.,
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4042029?start=0&tstart=0

So Google, what's up?

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? jw512 6/21/12 8:27 PM
My new 2012 MBA crashes when using Chrome as well. It becomes unresponsive to the point that I can't even force quit it. Just have to power it down and the logs always show Google Chrome HE as the culprit...
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? MattH77 6/24/12 5:25 PM
I'm gonna bump this in the hope that someone from Google will finally answer! Or should we all just use a different browser on Mac?
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? MMNYC 6/24/12 7:44 PM
Me too. I reinstalled Lion and I was still getting panics. I just uninstalled Chrome so now I'm waiting to see what happens. I'm pretty sure it's Chrome. Google, fix this!
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? scherer326 6/25/12 7:46 AM
I am hoping google fixes this asap, it is definitely a problem with google and the new 2012 macbook airs.  Keeps on freezing resulting in a hard reboot.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Supmoggo 6/27/12 8:39 AM
Yeah it's happened to me to with my 2012 MBP 15"

I noticed it was while watching youtube videos

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? deuxdeux 6/27/12 1:50 PM
I tried to "clean" my google+ profile, created a new one, same thing, keeps crashing again and again.

Hi all,

Thanks for your reports about this.

We're aware of this issue and need a few of you on the MacBook Air to help test some workarounds that are underway. Please let me know if you can help us and I'll follow-up with you off-thread.

Toni
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? jtn0123 6/27/12 7:55 PM
I have had the issue on a MBP 13 inch occur numerous times. I would be willing to test anything if needed.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Toni (Googler) 6/28/12 8:56 AM
Can all of you having this problem with the kernel panic try disabling hardware acceleration in Flash settings? Please let us know if it worked for you (it'll help us in our investigation). Here's how to do it:

1. Go to a webpage with a Flash video (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTjHCCU2E4c)
2. Right-click in the middle of the video
3. Click Settings
4. Click the left-most tab
5. Uncheck the 'Enable hardware acceleration' checkbox to disable hardware acceleration.
6. Refresh the page

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Toni (Googler) 6/28/12 8:57 AM
Thanks jtn0123! We'll reach out to you separately when ready. Before we do that though, can you try my disabling hardware acceleration tip above and let me know if that worked?

This crash is happening on my new MacBook pro with retina display. Crash Report Attached
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Toni (Googler) 6/28/12 9:24 AM
@mgelberg - Can you please try my above suggestion to disable hardware acceleration in Flash (2nd Best Answer post)? Please let me know if it worked for you.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? mgelberg 6/28/12 9:38 AM
When I try to do this, the Settings window appears to be frozen. I can't x out of it, nor can I uncheck the Enable Hardware Acceleration.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? mgelberg 6/28/12 9:43 AM
Ok I figured that out and have now unchecked that box. I will let you know if it continues to crash.

I'm trying the "disabling hardware acceleration" I let you know
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? jtn0123 6/28/12 11:51 AM
I've disabled hardware acceleration as you said. I'll continue using Chrome and see if it works.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? MattH77 6/29/12 1:54 PM
Thanks for getting back to me. I've tried this and will keep you posted.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? MattH77 6/30/12 4:38 AM
Nope. Still crashing.  :-(
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? VictorSB 7/2/12 10:00 AM
I have the same issues and disabling hardware acceleration on macbook pro retina 15" NVIDIA hardware does not work either.

It keeps crashing hard

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? deuxdeux 7/5/12 4:09 PM
I've disabled hardware acceleration, it worked fine until today it freezed then crashed again when I opened a link in Chrome.

I have a new 2012 macbook pro 15 inch non-retina.  Chrome is crashing my system as well.  Predictably and reproducibly.  I will use Safari until this gets resolved.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? MattH77 7/8/12 7:53 AM
It's still happening Toni. Don't suppose you've any other suggestions have you please?
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? aidanomara 7/8/12 5:09 PM
I'm encountering a Chrome crash on a 2012 Macbook Pro with Retina Display.

When I open up the flash settings, it's completely unresponsive - I can't uncheck the 'Enable hardware acceleration' box.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? KillerKellerjr 7/9/12 9:04 AM
I have multiply Macs where the latest Google Chrome is crashing or causing Kernel Panics. They are all 10.6.8 iMacs or MacBook Pros. I have tried the turning off "Enable Hardware Acceleration" but it still crashes. Please fix this issue Google. I have to update and deploy to 400 iMacs at my school and this can't be an issue, we are an all Google School. 6 weeks away till school starts again, hope you get it fixed by then. This occurs on many sites using Flash, the reason I hate flash. Can't wait till HTML 5 takes completely over.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? MattH77 7/11/12 5:55 AM
Does this mean that Google have no idea what's going on and can't help? Should we just change our search engine? This is getting a bit frustrating now. I would much rather use Google Chrome because when it works I really like it. But if it's going to keep making my Mac crash I'm afraid I might as well look elsewhere. Shame.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? jtn0123 7/11/12 2:00 PM
Agreed! If Chorme won't work I'm going back to Safari.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Keith-L 7/11/12 11:57 PM
Hey, I'm on a 2011 MacBook Pro (not Air) Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Having the same pale blue crash.  Started yesterday.  Chrome icon bounces and appears active on startup.  Crashes when I try to exit it.  Just started yesterday from me.  (I'm in New Zealand if that makes any difference).

All my bookmarks and everything is in my chrome browser =(  Now I'm stuck with Safari.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? mussingtond 7/14/12 9:37 AM
They are not communicating much of what is going on.  I am back using Safari and Firefox(!) as alternatives until this gets straightened out.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? standardGeese 7/15/12 6:56 AM
I followed those instructions and the machine still crashes every few hours, but only if Chrome is open. If it helps, I am currently running the latest release of Chrome (20.0.1132.57).  Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? DaveSF 7/19/12 11:52 AM
Because this is a kernel panic, it's obvious the bug is in Apple's kernel and driver and not Chrome. (Applications can't crash a protected OS kernel unless it's faulty)

Looking at the kernel-panic log, this is obviously a bug in the Apple Intel HD 4000 video driver, everyone should go report feedback to Apple about how they should fix their video driver.

There are rumors that Apple is aware of their video driver bug and made a fix, but that the fix has not yet been rolled out. If you want the techy details, you can see a fairly informed discussion here...

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? BrK4 7/21/12 10:43 AM
Thank you for the info.  I'll be sending in a request to Apple - perhaps if they get enough inquiries they'll push out an update sooner rather than later.

Thanks for this but attempting to make sense of it made my head hurt!! Any ideas what we can do or what might be the most productive plan of attack next? Thanks!
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Sie_Deen 8/7/12 11:04 AM
Hey folks,
We need your help in investigating further into this issue. If you have (1)a Macbook Pro or Macbook Air on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), (2)with a Intel HD 4000 graphics card, and (3)was experiencing kernel panics(Macbook Pro crashes completely), please let us know and we will reach out to you directly for further troubleshooting steps. We will also reach out to some of you directly to get more information.

If you are not sure what your graphics card is, click on the Apple menu on the top left > About this Mac > click on More Info > in the detail for Graphics, if you have Intel HD 4000, please let us know.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Kaosunseen 8/8/12 3:17 PM
Hello! I've been looking through this forum, seeing as it addresses an issue I've had; I do have a 4000 Intel card in my computer, so if you would like ask me questions about it, please don't hesitate to email me. I'd be more than glad to get this fixed. : )

As of now, my computer hasn't frozen and crashed... however, for the past few months since I got the computer, both the freezing and an error message upon startup saying "your profile could not be read correctly" (more, I can post a screenshot if needed) have happened each time I open Chrome.

I hope I can help resolve the issue; I did see in the forums somewhere that somebody else was able to fix it by updating to the latest version of Chrome from an older one. I just did this, and I have yet to crash. I'll keep you guys posted!

I have a new Macbook Pro 15-inch retina with the HD 4000 graphics card experiencing regular kernal panics -- but, oddly, only since yesterday (I have had the computer for about a month). The details indicate that the Chrome preferences file is corrupted. Is this something I can fix?
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Keith-L 8/13/12 6:38 AM
Hi,

Not sure if this is useful but I had serious irrecoverable crashes (plain light blue screen).

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, HD 3000 graphics card (rather than the 4000 you requested).

Chrome no longer crashes for me though.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Sie_Deen 8/14/12 2:40 PM
@JMDancer, can you confirm your Chrome version (wrench > About Google Chrome), and Mac OS version?
It's interesting that you are currently experiencing these kernel panics, since the current Stable version has a blacklist on GPU access on Mac OS X Lion with Intel HD 4000.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Sie_Deen 8/14/12 2:48 PM
@Kmak868, thanks for posting the details of your graphics card. This specific issue is around the Intel HD 4000 graphics card.

It sounds like you are experiencing a different type of crash. Can you start a new thread detailing as much information about the crash as you can?
- Your OS, Chrome version, and graphics card
- Are there consistent steps that will cause the kernel panic?
- Do you have a recent crash log?
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Sie_Deen 8/14/12 2:54 PM
@ashich.pn.sinha, can you let us know about the following:
  • What is the Chrome version (wrench > About Google Chrome) where these crashes/kernel panics are occurring?
  • What is the graphics card on the Macbook Pro Retina?
  • Are the crashes/kernel panics consistently occurring?
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Sie_Deen 8/14/12 2:55 PM

@Keith-L,  thanks for posting the details of your graphics card. This specific issue is around the Intel HD 4000 graphics card.

If you do start having kernel panics again on your Macbook Pro, please do start a new thread and detail as much information about the crash as you can?

For now I switch to Safari until it gets fixed… I miss you Chrome :(
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? mussingtond 8/14/12 5:59 PM
I found that upgrading to mountain lion seems to have cured the problem.  This is on a mid 2012 MacBook pro.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Sie_Deen 8/15/12 10:08 AM
@FeelDix, can you describe the crash that you are seeing when you watch YouTube videos? Is it a kernel panic/Mac crash, or Chrome browser crash?
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Stephen Rasku 8/15/12 11:17 AM
@Sie_Deen, I am getting a kernel panic when this happens.  The computer reboots.  I don't have a backtrace to attach but I can the next time it happens.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? FeelDix 8/15/12 4:54 PM
It is a Mac/kernel panic crash, the macbook reboots, then shows the white screen crash message.
I'll post the crash log next time when it happens again.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? lovablesins86 8/20/12 7:28 AM

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? dminus 8/20/12 3:54 PM
Seems to happen for me only when switching to tabs with graphic-intensive content (large image i.e. Mars rover panorama photo viewer, Flash video, etc). Usually happens when closing multiple tabs in succession; crash occurs when next open tab contains lots of graphic content.

Roughly half the time, it seems that the rendered page is in the process of being re-scaled for the retina display just before the crash occurs.

I can supply panic log for the last 5 crashes if needed.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Sie_Deen 8/21/12 9:22 AM
@Stephen Rasku, @lovablesins86, not all kernel panics/crashes are triggered by the same root cause. Can you confirm the following so that we can narrow down the cause of the kernel panic you are experiencing:
  • Are you experiencing these kernel panics on a Mac OS X 10.7.4?
  • Does the Mac have an Intel HD 4000 graphics card?
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? isohedral 8/22/12 7:34 AM
@Sie_Deen, if you're still investigating the problem then feel free to contact me.  New MBP Retina, OSX 10.7.4, Intel HD 4000 (+ GeForce GT 650M), Chrome 21.0.1180.82.  Getting hard kernel panics maybe once a day.  I'll disable HW acceleration in Flash for now, and hope for the best.  Thanks.

Yes I'm experiencing on there and I than switched to Canary and it's been fine and it hasn't crashed but on the non canary it keeps crashing

@Sie_Deen: Mac OS 10.7.4, Intel HD 4000, Chrome 21.0.1180.82.
I believe it's a kernel panics crash, my macbook shuts down by itself and restart with a crash warning.
I attach the crash report, hope it helps you.
Thanks

I had two crashes today:

MacBook Pro Retina 2.7GHz, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD

Entered a UStream page

activated flash (I use flash block)

and my system froze, I had to reboot the computer.

Both happened the same way (on UStream).

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? fisherhistoryteach 8/31/12 8:52 AM
My Mac Book Pro with Retina Display recently had a hard drive crash from continual Google Chrome failure. It was my fault for not changing to another web browser. When I went to the Apple store and called for help support they believe it has something to do with the graphic accelerator not being compatible with Google Chrome. That's about all I can offer. They ended up sending me a new Mac Book Pro with Retina Display.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? MattH77 9/1/12 3:29 PM
These are the latest Macbook Pro's aren't they? Wow! Google STILL haven't fixed this? What's going on here? Can't believe Google don't care about this. How frustrating! So is everyone else using another browser? What do you suggest?
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Supmoggo 9/1/12 9:15 PM
the problem is actually with apple's terrible drivers and if you update to 10.8 the problem is gone.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? jgoller 9/4/12 4:05 AM
Sie_Deen, my Mac has been crashing lately while using Google Chrome. Always seems to happen when I click on an image. The screen suddenly goes blank and the Mac restarts itself.

I am running Mac OS X 10.7.4 and have the Intel HD 4000 graphics card. Google Chrome version 21.0.1180.89

Thank you!

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? FeelDix 9/4/12 5:24 PM
Is this true if we upgrade to Mountain Lion (10.8), the kernel panic crash problem will be gone?
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? @30s 9/5/12 5:38 PM
Not true. I have Mountain Lion installed on my MBP 15" (mid 2010) and I've reached a score of 15 kernel panics in a row!
The only thing that worked for me by now was stop using Google Chrome or disable its flash plugin.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? amb22 9/6/12 4:24 PM
I also am having this problem, and have Mountain Lion and a mid 2010 MBP 15".

Hi, I'm having this issue. Chrome causes 2011 MacBook Pro on 10.8.1 to crash completely. Don't know if it's related, but this message is in the log.

Google Chrome Helper[5828]: Unsure about the internals of CFAllocator but going to patch them anyway. If there is a crash inside of CFAllocatorAllocate, please report it at http://crbug.com/117476 . If there is a crash and it is NOT inside of CFAllocatorAllocate, it is NOT RELATED. DO NOT REPORT IT THERE but rather FILE A NEW BUG.

@Sie_Deen I am continuing to have this sporadic failures on my Mac.

15-inch, Mid 2012
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB
Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E2617)
Version 21.0.1180.89

No common webpage/pattern from what I can tell, but the crash message always looks similar to the above:

      Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
         com.apple.driver.AppleIntelHD4000Graphics(7.2.8)[6B02D782-A79F-399C-81FD-353EBFF2AB81]@0xffffff7f824bc000->0xffffff7f82522fff

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Google Chrome He

I'm going to have to stop using Chrome.  I'm willing to try to help, but I don't want to deal with random crashes.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? jcbookhout 9/11/12 9:02 AM
I am using a retina MBP with Moutain Lion 10.8.1 installed. I have only the rarest of kernel panics, but having Chrome open occasionally causes Mac OS X to become unresponsive other than the mouse. No commands work and force quit is inoperative. I think this behavior is confined to when Chrome is open. It always begins with Chrome failing to load a webpage. I think it might be related to use of the Intel HD 4000 chip. The problem has persisted across a complete clean install of OS X.

I am not sure, but I have seen articles about Chrome crashing the new model of the MacBook Air, but I do not know about the new retina. Nevertheless, I think I can confirm that it is Chrome-related.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? bhspencer 10/1/12 8:38 AM
I am having the same type of crash reported by the original poster. MacBook pro with retina display. Running OSX 10.8.2.

It has only happened while running Chrome. It happened twice today. In both cases it was while either plugging in to or unplugging an external Thunderbolt display. I suspect that this crash is related to auto switching between the intel HD4000 and the Nvidia device as the Nvidia device is activated when an external display is connected.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? altoning 10/24/12 12:31 PM
I'm surprised neither Google or Apple have an update to resolve this issue.

My MacBook Pro Retina continues to lock up with Chrome only since I purchased it over a month ago.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Jammerman 10/29/12 9:49 AM
I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro with an Intel HD 3000 graphics card and I'm also having this problem. Once I realized Chrome was causing the kernel panics I stopped using it. Chrome completely freezes and I can't exit out of it without force closing. None of the aforementioned solutions has solved the problem.

Have their been any success stories?

mine freezes when I try to open it. out of no where! one day it workded fine & now everytime I open it, the color wheel comes up & never goes away on the page unless I shut my computer all the way down!

I keep seeing everywhere that google is only interested in the problems with Chrome on MacBook Air.  The problem seems to be on MacBook Pro's like my mid 2010 13" model.  Please look into the whole of the Lion and Mountain Lion OSs.  I think it must have something to do with that.  I am running Mountain Lion and am experiencing crashing usually when I start the Mac's native Mail program and have Chrome running at the same time.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? fulleclipse2 11/13/12 5:37 AM
I agree with you.

It seems, it is echo of the old Flash-Apple war.

I have the freezing problem on my old 2008 mac. The freezing happens while using Chrome.

Chrome is my second browser for years, but the problem happens only now, after Google has stopped supporting Chrome on my mac.

I would like to add this link, which could be useful for better understanding of the freezing problem:

My MacBook Pro 10.6.8 was stable until about a week ago. Now, it freezes (black screen, accepts no input, keys backlit, kernel panic) every time I use Chrome (latest version?) doing just about anything. Switched to Safari and worked all afternoon.

Intel HD Graphics (no 4000)

I have a macbook pro OS X 10.6.8  and since I have began using Chrome my windows just freeze up.  It won't allow me to refresh the page or click through anything so I just close the window down and start all over again. I thought maybe it was something weaseled it's way into my mac but nothing did.  If I work on Safari, my windows don't freeze.  I really enjoy Chrome and would love to continue to use it but I'll have to stick with Safari if this can't get fixed.  I've tried the suggestion above with no success.  Please help!!

I would suggest that something is wrong with Chrome, namely, the way it handles plug-ins. On the other hand, Chrome developed a freeze on my macbook after Google stopped supporting Leopard and removed Flash plug-in (the last version is 20 or 21).

There is a more explainable reason; Chrome is in a blacklist in my Institute. Thus, the third party may freeze the browser intentionally.

Just try your Chrome at different access points; at home, in the office, in other country.

I have just uninstalled Chrome. Safari is way better at the moment.

Hey,

I'm using a MBP Retina 15 with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB.

i'm running 10.8.2 and experiencing complete freezing of my OS. To give you more context it freezes when I multiple tabs open most recently with google finance, a number of tumblr sites, youtube video and random news sites. So in other words procrastinating.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? altoning 11/26/12 6:02 AM
I've got the same configuration (MacBook Pro 15" Retina) and it freezes when I re-focus the tabs and mouseover the following pages:

http://wind.altoning.com/temp
http://wind.altoning.com/noaa

Is it some javascript that causes the MacBook to freeze? After it freezes I need to perform a hard reboot using the power switch.

P.S. I always view the same web pages on Ubuntu 12.04 and freezing never occurs.

I use my Mac from home exclusively - connected to a port selector/big monitor and not (as a laptop). I've given up on Chrome at this point and am posting this from Safari.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Sie_Deen 11/26/12 5:23 PM
Hey folks,

If you are only experiencing crashes recently, you are likely seeing a different issue from the earlier posts (~June-July) on this thread (kernel panics). Please let us know about the following so that we can troubleshoot this further:
  1. What type of crash are you experiencing?
  2. Details from the chrome://version page, if you are able to navigate to this page without crashing.
  3. If you have opted in to send crash reports to Google, you may see some crashes listed on your chrome://crashes page. Please let us know some of the crash IDs that are listed on that page around the time of your crash.
    • Having these crash IDs will help us investigate into the specific crashers.
If you are instead experiencing freezing/hangs, where Chrome doesn't crash, please also let us know, as we treat these differently.

The MAC just freezes all programs with pinwheel of death often.  I just am going to erase Chrome and use firefox/safari.  This should be a priority to either Google or Apple but Apple said not their issue it is software outside so they don't really care and I get it but if google wants to be on MACS they should get it to work, I use it in my seminars but now will be moving to other browsers....no time for it.  There is no words just freezes and have to hard reboot

Cheers

With my mac the behavior is the same. I use only Safari now.

Michael Horowitz says: "... Another issue for Macs forced to install Java 7, is that it's not supported by Google's Chrome browser." Here is the link:

http://blogs.computerworld.com/application-security/21173/ugly-side-latest-java-updates

I think, Google makes some improvements in his Chrome, say, a transition from 32 to 64 bit or something else, I am not sure. But I was only informed that Google stops updating Chrome on my Leopard starting from version 20 or 21. It is strange that a consequence of that is freezing of my mac.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? fulleclipse2 11/27/12 7:21 AM
You are right. It is better to switch to Safari.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? yash008 11/27/12 1:04 PM
Hi,
I've had to stop using chrome because of this issue. I'm using a Retina Macbook Pro, 15". It is not a chrome crash, it is system unresponsiveness, resulting in me having to either force reboot the system, or a kernel panic. I was using Chrome 24 beta, but downgrading to Chrome 23 does not solve the problem. Based on reports by a 3rd party application (gfxcardstatus) it appears that chrome has largest dependencies on the GPU.

I'd really like to be able to use chrome again.

Thanks

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? karen ammann 11/27/12 2:11 PM
When I am browsing in Chrome it will suddenly stop responding, then Firefox and Safari will also stop responding (I usually run all three during my work day). I upgraded to Mountain Lion thinking that would help, I upgraded to 8 GB RAM thinking that would help, nope. I'm working on a 2010 Pro 13" running ML, Chrome version 23.0.1271.91.

When Chrome crashes I can't even Force Quit anything. I can't pull up terminal, I have to manually restart the computer. I did the Flash fix you suggested and have enabled crash reports.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? cfm11813 11/28/12 2:05 AM
I gave up for a while and abandoned Chrome :(
I then tried with latest release (27 I think) and it too caused Mac kernel panics.

Heres my workaround:
I downloaded an installer of Chrome Version 20.0.1132.47
and then disabled its auto update feature.

All good since then.

Hello! Sorry i cant find forum for snow leopard, but i have almost the same problem. I attach what the chrome wrote for fault. Please help me!!!
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? fulleclipse2 11/28/12 4:05 AM
Yep. It looks like Chrome is the reason of the unresponsiveness. Have you ever seen Google's report on freezes and kernel panics and how Chrome is involved in these problems? I would like to see it. You may try versions older than 20. Does Google have a site with Chrome archives? There is a site, but it is not Google's official one:
http://mac.oldapps.com/google_chrome.php?

Thanks.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Mike Carvalho 11/28/12 7:28 AM
I'm at the end of my rope now -- I had to resort to using Firefox all day yesterday to avoid the constant freezes, and I've had no issues since.

I'm on a MacBook Pro model MC372LL/A (mid-2010) running 10.6.8.

Automatic Chrome updates are enabled, so I'm currently running 23.0.1271.91. Or at least I was before Chrome became unusable.

No chrome://crashes have been recorded since 11/14, probably because the entire computer is locking up. Crashes have been happening consistently since 11/26. That appears to be the date of the last Chrome update? Do we have a culprit?

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Jeffery Johnson 11/29/12 1:09 PM
I also am having this problem in Chrome only on my MBP Mid 2012 15in with Geforce GT 1024. I have an Early MBP 13in that it does not happen on.

It will sometimes go a day or so without crashing, but usually at least once a day.  Sometimes (like today) 5 or 6 times.

I have used Chrome exclusively for most tasks for awhile now, but am now removing from the Dock and reverting to FireFox and/or Safari.

I hope Google can figure this out, because I really do prefer the Chrome experience, but the current versions are not stable on this machine at all.

JJ

Details asked for:

What type of crash are you experiencing?

Is it a Mac kernel panic? It will look something like this.

- This has happened twice, but usually it is the pinwheel and the MBP becomes completely unresponsive.  The only solution, power off and back on.

Is it a Chrome browser crash? (e.g. Whoa, Google Chrome has crashed)

-Nope

    Is it an Aw, Snap?

-Nope

Details from the chrome://version page, if you are able to navigate to this page without crashing.

- Version 23.0.1271.95 , but this has been happening through several versions.

If you have opted in to send crash reports to Google, you may see some crashes listed on your chrome://crashes page. Please let us know some of the crash IDs that are listed on that page around the time of your crash.

-Unfortunately, it was disabled.

I am having the same problem with Chrome - no issue with firefox. I am using a Macbook Retina with OS X 10.7.5 and Chrome 23.0.1271.95.  Mac jusr becomes unresponsive. Mouse and spotlight text box always work (but I can't launch anything through spotlight). Sometimes i am able to switch to some other program which has not frozen, like mail, but usually my only option is to restart using cmd+cntr+power

I don't get any messages or warning that it is about to freeze or that it has frozen.

(i had also disabled automatic graphic switching in energy preferences as per some other posts but that did not help)

Anyone figured out a solution?

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? prksm 12/4/12 7:19 PM
Hi, at least for me the type of crash or none of the ones you posted. All of my programs just start to freeze (Chrome is always first) and then even when I try to click on 'restart' or 'shutdown', that's frozen as well. So what I end up having to do is just hold my power button down until it turns off, which I would prefer not to do. I adore Google Chrome but in a utility sense, it gets very risky to use since I am often using Chrome for work purposes. I hope you guys can figure this thing out. Thanks!
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? fulleclipse2 12/5/12 4:29 AM

Yep. I do not use Chrome anymore. This works fine. Safari is good.

If my life depended on a browser I would create my own one. It is Ok for the moment.

Another one to add to the list ... Macbook Pro Mid 2010 13" OS X 10.8.2 (12C60). I am getting the spinning pinwheel and pixels all over the place. Requires a reboot.  If I use Safari I don't have an issue.

Using Chrome Version 23.0.1271.97

Hey Sie_Deen,
I have been suffering from the problem as described here:

Will I just have to suffer through this for the rest of my existence with Chrome on this machine?  I really love chrome but losing audio on Chrome every time my computer has been asleep for awhile is kind of annoying...  I know there is not a lot to go on with this bug but do you have any thoughts?  Thanks!

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? romeolima 1/12/13 5:31 PM
I've just installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook and Google have sent a very annoying message to my empty Gmail screen to the effect that I should 'get a MODERN browser like Chrome as Google does not support Safari on Snow Leopard !' This is just Google bringing out it's own versions of iphone, ipad and Safari and involving us all in it's commercial warfare. It's pathetic.

"If you are instead experiencing freezing/hangs" Yes, I've provided some details below. Please let me know if you need more. Wouldn't be such an issue if Chrome didn't cause the entire machine to hang.

1.        What type of crash are you experiencing?

Browser becomes unresponsive.
CMD, OPT & ESC shows that Chrome is not responding.
Browser hangs, Unable to close or even force quit.
Eventually it starts to slow entire MBP and I have to hard-reboot by holding down the power button. Occurring at least several times per week on OSX ML 10.8.2
I get no crash report.

2. Details from Chrome version page:

I also get the error on Windows XP.

Macbook pro version 6.2
Intel Core i5, 2.4 GHz
OS 10.6.8

Running google chrome crashes my computer at least once a week. Last Friday this happened three times. I've noticed that whenever chrome is displaying lots of pictures, it causes my entire computer to freeze up. No response to commands, only the mouse works. I'm forced to do a hard restart each time.

I've tried turning Flash off, does not improve. I'm using Safari until I see some sort of reliable fix.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? LyonJE 2/25/13 2:48 AM
I've had this happen at various times for years. It's just started again now.

It's not a kernel panic, it's not a browser crash that produces *any* output... The O.S. just locks up, looks a bit like a filesystem race condition maybe?

Sometimes the mouse/pointer will still move about the screen, not always. Sometimes the Mac key-combination for a forced restart (Ctrl+Cmd+Power) will work, not always. Can get some corruption after, but I always proceed as though corruption has occurred, just in case.

The point is that the GUI stops responding, and I cannot log out, shut down, do anything with the Chrome window which is just in start-up, usually stops before finished drawing.

Being offline makes no difference, but on this occasion I see it *does* load okay with Mac booted in Safe Mode.

I update to mountain lion and have not had the issue since
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? MattH77 3/4/13 11:07 AM
Still no response to our problems? Wow. Shocking work Google.  :-(

As I've said before my screen goes blue and I can't do anything. I have to hold down the on/off button to get my laptop back. Not good.

My issues are identical
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Jared Rapp 5/9/13 7:17 PM
I started having the problem after I upgraded from my standard hard disk to an SSD.  It looks like my system reboots when it runs out of memory and needs to go to virtual memory.  Almost seems as if the second virtual memory is needed, the system does a warm reboot.  This ONLY happens with Chrome.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? mgovindanv 6/2/13 7:16 AM
I had the same problem following the installation of OS 10.8.3 in my MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2010 edition. I tried to get help from Genius, but they were unable to assist and directed me to  Google. I decided to take the affair in my own hands. This is what I did:
1) Saved all my files and data into my stationary Hard Disk "Lassie"
2) Noted all the file extensions on my Chrome, Firefox & Safari Browsers.
3) Kept all the software Disks at hand for reinstallation. Removed all external connection other than the Power.
4) Made note of all Cloud storage information such as "Box, Drop Box, Google Drive & Sky Drive"
Then, I forced quit all running Applications.
5) Shut down my MacBook Pro
6) Held down Command & R keys while Mac is starting.
7) Chose Disk Utility
8) Chose Erase my Mac HD. Took about 3 min.
9) Went back to Disk Utility.
10) Chose Reinstall  OS X Mountain Lion, you need your iTune ID & Password.
OS X Recovery has to download Mountain Lion from Apple.
It took 3PM till 10.30PM to complete all operations. The Chrome browser is working as it should be and my LapTop is faster than when before.
I hope you will have no problems to follow the instructions.
Have a beautiful day

My problem (which started in the last week or so) is not a crash but a freeze....I get the spinning rainbow of death and have to hard reboot.  It can happen even if I'm not actively on Chrome.  I can be in another program, but if Chrome is open it can happen spontaneously.  I'm on the verge of stopping the use of Chrome altogether and going back to Firefox, since this is happening so frequently.

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? mgovindanv 8/21/13 11:56 AM
I had this problem 3 months ago with OS X 10.4 following upgrade. I tried all solutions suggested on line, however with out success.
Then after frustration, I uninstalled Google Chrome completely and reinstalled the latest version. Since then I am using Chrome and I had never a crash nor any issues with Chrome. I run Chrome, Firefox, Camino & Safari in different windows and use the research engines for various purposes. I have 25-35 tabs on each window and my Laptop once in a while runs hot and I restart the machine . Tabs in the search engines are never lost and hope you will be able to use it with out efforts following complete removal and reinstallation.
Best of luck

I have the same problem.  I have downloaded it and installed it again.  But it continues to freeze.  All other browsers are working on my Macbook.  What should I do?
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? kalpana sharma 9/2/13 6:52 AM
Tried this but didn't help.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? Jan Berry 9/2/13 9:25 AM
I have uninstalled and installed.  It'll be fine briefly, but then start
freezing again.  I'm giving up on Chrome until there's some resolution.  A
shame, because I liked Chrome.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? nzacchino 9/27/13 5:15 PM
Have you figured this out yet?  I have had my MacBook Air since 2012 and it just started freezing constantly in Chrome and also a few ties in Safari.
Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? LyonJE 9/27/13 7:01 PM
The problem I reported is a failure by Google -- if you find the crashing/freezing is affecting Safari as well, it's probably a different problem.

Chrome is now also exhibiting DNS failures, goodness knows how its resolver library is getting something wrong that the entirety of the rest of the O.S. and all my *nix hosts seem 100% capable of doing without a single fault year on year....

Change of focus by Google, I guess....

Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? John Bowers 10/16/13 10:06 AM
I am seeing hangs periodically with Google chrome on my MacBook Pro Retina (with solid state hard-drive<- that may or may not be relevant). When it occurs, I can switch between tabs, but I cannot scroll or interact with links. Additionally, other apps freeze if I try to save a file, and force quit doesn't work on chrome or any subsequent app I've hung up by trying to save to disk. It necessitates a hard reset.
