Chrome extensions keep initializing webcam (webcam led constantly blinking) hjhamala 6/30/12 8:14 AM
Chrome has started to constantly initialize webcam after update to version 20.0.1132.47-r144678 in Ubuntu 12.04 when in pages which use extensions like Flash and Google Talk (Gmail). This manifests with webcams led constantly blinking.

Hardware:
Zotac zbox-id41
Ubuntu 12.04
Microsoft Lifecam HD-3000
Chrome-version: 20.0.1132.47-r144678

Step to reproduce:
- Open Chrome
- Go to gmail or to page which is using Flash
- Observe webcam led constantly blinking

This is only little bit annoying and i dont know does it causes any other issues.

Is there a easy fix for this?

I am seeing this behaviour as well.

I *seems* to be related to the sluggishness I am experiencing - in that when the webcam is *not* blinking (haven't yet worked out why it sometimes does and sometimes does not) the sluggishness in typing and scrolling is not present.

I have done some testing - unplugged my Microsoft Lifecam HD-3000 from my Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit machine and all sluggishness in Chrome as gone.

So the "webcam always on" and sluggish scrolling/typing issues seem to be one and the same.

It blinks for me too, so annoying (a4tech pk-30mj webcam)

I have noticed also sluggish scrolling when the webcam is blinking. This is clearly a bug in Chrome.

Is this message thread enough to notice the developers about issue or should I make a ticket to a tracker somewhere else?

I'm experiencing an issue with another MS webcam (LifeCam Studio) that sounds very related. Using Chrome, and in particular Google Drive, will cause the webcam to crash in other applications (like Skype), freezing the video feed. I also get abrupt crashes in Google Hangouts on Chrome.

I reported it through Chrome's help menu, we'll see if anything comes of that.

I found that if you disable the Flash plugin under about:plugins it 'fixes' the problem. But then you can't view any Flash content...
Re: Chrome extensions keep initializing webcam (webcam led constantly blinking) ohnealles 7/20/12 6:10 PM
an alternative would be using pulseaudio instead of alsa, as the default videocard driver.
anyway, flash player originally uses alsa, and you would need a plugin to make alsa applications use pulseaudio:
libasound2-plugins
then edit the ~/.asoundrc file (maybe /etc/asound.conf too), adding the following lines (may be that such files don't exist. then you have to create them):

pcm.pulse {
    type pulse
}
ctl.pulse {
    type pulse
}
pcm.!default {
    type pulse
}
ctl.!default {
    type pulse
}

then reboot. if there is any problem with not being able to mix sounds, although your soundcard provides sound mixing, you should read the documentation of pulseaudio, and how its taught to force pulseaudio being the default sound driver.
pulseaudio perfect setup: http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/User/PerfectSetup

Re: Chrome extensions keep initializing webcam (webcam led constantly blinking) ohnealles 7/20/12 6:19 PM
sorry: i forgot to write that doing this made my microsoft livecam vx-800 stop blinking when using gmail website or whatever site which needed the flash plugin. (figured it out accidentaly, trying to make my microphone work)
be aware that changing from alsa to pulseaudio could bring other issues, depending on your hardware. therefore, if you change back the files i mentioned would make it be back to the last configuration.
this could be useful too:
gstreamer-properties
there you could choose which driver and which device to use for input/ouput etc..

P.S: i use debian 6, and not ubuntu...but this should be the same. worked for me.

I followed your procedure, but I'm still having the same problem. It looks like a definite bug in the current version of Chrome, because Chromium from the Ubuntu repo works fine.
Re: Chrome extensions keep initializing webcam (webcam led constantly blinking) ohnealles 7/22/12 5:56 PM
yes, you are right. this is a bug, since you should be able to choose whatever sound driver you wanted, and have google chrome working. (our alsa-base versions are different, maybe the problem really lies on google-chrome)

anyway, if you are still using pulseaudio, you could try to look if flash is using pulseaudio or not (while a video is open in youtube, opening the volume control, in the tag applications, or something similar, there should be displayed google chrome as an application being used by pulseaudio with the alsa plugin). if it isn't being used, flash is still using alsa.
could you paste the content of /etc/pulse/client.conf?
if the line with "autospawn" is not commented and is set as no, try changing for yes. if this is commented, just keep it.

also, does pulseaudio belong to the startup applications?

remembering: just changing from alsa to pulseaudio won't take effect until you reboot your system.

Looks like it's a bug in the Pepper-based Flash. Go into about:plugins, hit +Details to expand, then disable the "/home/opt/google/chrome/PepperFlash/libpepflashplayer.so" plugin, while leaving the normal flash enabled. Should stop the camera light blinking.

The constant stream of "cannot get freq at ep 0x84" errors in the dmesg output stops as well.

That fixed it perfectly! Now, I wonder what advantage if any the Pepper Flash plugin had over the Adobe one...
Re: Chrome extensions keep initializing webcam (webcam led constantly blinking) FlameBait 8/1/12 3:40 PM
I reported this bug. It only seems to be a problem when I have Gmail open.
My Microsoft HD(720p web cam light lashes and the mouse cursor halts in a regular cycle.

People experiencing this issue please report this bug.

Re: Chrome extensions keep initializing webcam (webcam led constantly blinking) FlameBait 8/1/12 3:41 PM
Doesn't this disable flash completely?
Re: Chrome extensions keep initializing webcam (webcam led constantly blinking) ahawkins82 8/2/12 2:04 AM
Not if you have the Adobe plugin installed on your system. Reports around the web would suggest that the Pepper version isn't entirely stable anyway.
Re: Chrome extensions keep initializing webcam (webcam led constantly blinking) macundo 8/2/12 8:17 AM
I have the MS LifeCam HD-5000 and have also been hit by this bug.  Unfortunately for the lucky few of us using Linux (yeah that includes Linux based android phones and tablets), disabling the plugin will render the browser unable to see flash based content.  This is obviously a bug in chromium core.

is this problem present with gnash?
here it is written how to use gnash instead of flash in google chrome:

gnash is the GNU flash player

I'm seeing the same problem.  It is very annoying for me.  I have terrible keyboard latency when this happens.  I can type way ahead of the browser's ability to display the characters.
I have only done a superficial investigation.  The browser is not swamping the CPUs.  I'm guessing there is some thread mismanagement... Interestingly,  Chromium does NOT exhibit the same problem.  I've switched as an interim solution.

Hoping this gets addressed.  If dragged into it, I can help, but I'm very busy right now...

Re: Chrome extensions keep initializing webcam (webcam led constantly blinking) FlameBait 8/2/12 11:40 AM
I have the Adobe version installed. Disabling Pepperflash breaks Flash in Chrome. Sites Like Crunchyroll and The Anime Network are not usable.

This is not a viable work around on my system.
Chrome is broken.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the reports. It sounds like your issue with sluggishness while the webcam light is blinking is related to this bug: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=134799. We're currently investigating this and if this sounds like what you're experiencing, click on the star in the upper left corner to follow progress or provide additional information that is requested on the bug as needed.

Thanks!

I went to that URL. I see no star. I am not running Chromium I am running stable Google chrome.

How do I solve this issue Pepperflash USB webcam issue?
If I disable Pepperflash some sites refuse to work and report I don't have Flash player installed. These are sites I use everyday. If I remove the Adobe standalone Flash plugin it doesn't resolve the issue and Flash is not available to other applications. None of the suggestions work.  Despite anyone's opinion this issue is not resolved. Disabling Pepperflash doesn't fix the issue.

My USB webcam works under Firefox and with Skype. The Browser I want to use; Google Chrome doesn't work with the USB webcam plugged in.

You are lucky! My system slow down and camera works for 2 seconds and then freezes.
Temporary solution: it seems that the problem is caused from snd-usb-audio module, this module is loaded because LifeCam is an double USB device, audio and video.
Putting the line "blacklist snd-usb-audio" into /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf solves problem with video but stops every other usb audio device.
