"Your connection to this site is not private." Carter Glace 14/08/16 10:19
Since the Chrome 52 update was released, certain websites I go to regularly (such as IGN or ESPN) will say in the left of the url bar ""Your connection to this site is not private." I have never seen this before, should I be concerned, or has this always been true and the new update just points it out (it shows a green lock on sites such as youtube and other google affiliates).

Hi Carter,

Thanks for posting on the Google Chrome Help Forum.

The green lock simply indicates that Chrome has successfully established a secure connection with the site which is absolutely a good thing. Meanwhile, some websites with the "Your connection to this site is not private." is a common error that have problems with certificates, or bad internet setup, or a malware on the computer. Nothing to be alarmed about.

You could refer to this thread that might give a better insight and this help article for more information on Chrome's connection to a site.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Zarah

How would I check if it ere malware. That seems concerning!

Hi Carter,

The "i inside a circle" is just the new Material Design UI graphical update only.  In the previous UI, regular HTTP webpages showed a "blank page icon".

When you click on it, the information displayed is exactly the same.  Regular HTTP webpages are "connection to this site is not private", as they have always never been private.

Only connections to secure, encrypted HTTPS webpages are private, and those websites will show with a closed Green Lock.

How new is this?

Hi Cathy,

Regarding the new Chrome UI, the new buttons, new Omnibox/address bar icons, angular tabs, grey colored bookmark folders and three vertical dots menu are part of the new Material Design UI that has rolled out for Macs in Chrome 52.

You can get more details about the Material Design update from the Chrome 52 post:

What if when you click details... I'm on ESPN.com for example, and it brings up a few yellow triangles and says "Non-Secure Origins" and lists five or so ESPN related listings. Still not a problem?

Thanks for responding, Eric!

I went to ESPN.com and got:

Red circle with x [OneID]  {ERROR]:  Already initialized
Blue with i [OneID]  {INFO]: OneID Initialized
Yellow triangle 'webkitAudioContext'  is deprecated. Please use 'AudioContext' instead.

Does that point to anything?

That's exactly what I have. So this means I am totally fine, then?

Hi Eric and Cathy,

Any website that shows a security status of "Mixed Content - The site includes HTTP resources" is a problem of that website itself.  It's not caused by Chrome nor any browser.

It means the website initially loaded in secure HTTPS, but then included some regular not-secure HTTP resources which makes the overall webpage not secure.  This is a problem with that webpage that only the website's owner/administrators are able to fix.

You can help by sending a note to that website to tell them about the Mixed Content error so they can fix it.
