Google Chrome version 12.0.742.100 Operating System:Windows XP
Please describe your question/comment in detail (for example, steps to reproduce the problem): I have recently been unable to do anything when I log in to my hotmail account.  This problem just started yesterday.  I am able to log in just fine, but then when I click on anything, nothing happens.  I can't read emails, I can't send new emails, or reply.  I can't even switch to my junk folder.  I know this is not a problem on hotmail's end, because I was able to do everything just fine in Firefox, but I don't want to have to use two web browsers.  I looked at all the other information that people had posted about hotmail, but nothing helped me.  I\s this just another time that hotmail was updated and Chrome is unable to work correctly on the site?

I'm having exactly the same problem - same version of Chrome and XP.  It started when Google Update automatically installed the latest version of Chrome yesterday.  The version before that stopped me using the pull down menus on my bank web site.  That problem has now disappeared, to be replaced with this new one.  Before those problems an earlier new version of Chrome meant Flash crashed almost every time I used it.  If I can get a version that works properly in the future, I'll disable Google Updates.  Why Google imagines, with this sort of nonsense going on, anyone would purchase one of their new cloud computers and hand over all processes to them is beyond me.  Having said that, Chrome is far and away the best browser for my computer.  Hopefully Google will sort this out and download an update, or someone smarter than me will come up with a fix.

I have the excact same problem. I discovered it today. I can log in to hotmail fine, and see new mail subjects and my folders in the sidebar, but can't interact with anything below the sign in bar in the top (which means I can interact with the drop down menus ex. contacts, and in the contactmenu i am able to interact with links below the sign in bar) I also think it's a Chrome issue, since I can the mails from my android phones.

Sorry for spamming you, but I have now tried upgrading java AND installed all new windows updates, and that didn't help.

It appears as if the newest Chrome update has broken some functionality. Lets hope someone from Google from confirm and escalate for a fix.

I'm having the exact same problem as everyone else. Chrome version 12.0.742.100 has made it impossible to use Hotmail.
I've tried re-installing chrome and Java. No luck.

I installed an extension call "Hotmail Email Button" (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ppjjgbiniamnbngnjhkoffflodiafbeb) for now until a fix is issued. Actually works pretty good.

Ditto here.  Version 12.0.742.100. All was fine yesterday, now hotmail loads and then won't respond.  Happening on my machine with Win XP - but fine on my laptop with Windows 7.  Where's the catch????  Hoping for help from Google.

Hi, me again.  I'm now having a similar problem with Internet Explorer - can't access emails and as well my inbox page is scrambled.  I've been on the hotmail help forum and found many people with the problem of inability to access emails, including people using firefox, so it looks like it's a hotmail issue.  My apologies to Google for blaming them earlier.  I haven't found a solution yet, but I think if I'm going to it will be on the hotmail support site.  But hopefully microsoft techs are working on it and it will soon be resolved.

I seem to have fixed the problem on Internet Explorer by following the instructions here:

Hotmail started working again on IE once I deleted all the cookies, temporary files etc - everything available to delete.

Unfortunately I still have the problem in Chrome, but at least I can access my emails now.

Hi - exactly the same problem here as well: using Chrome 12.0.742.100 on Windows 7 with all updates installed; problem recurs even after clearing all browsing data and cookies. I hope we have some official input to this thread soon!

I'm thinking it's more of some kind of conflict between Chrome version 12.0.742.100 and Windows (xp or 7) 64-bit.

Hotmail worked fine in Chrome on both 32-bit versions of XP and win7. It has consistently failed on any windows 64-bit computer I try.

Can anyone confirm this as well?

No - I have no problems when accessing hotmail on Internet Explorer.  Just when I try to access it on Google Chrome.

Hotmail works for IE for me.  And Chrome works for hotmail on my work laptop (Windows 7 that just got the Service Pack update).  Just not on my home desktop.

FYI...I have seen Hotmail work fine in Chrome version 12.0.742.100 on XP, vista and win 7 computers. The only common link was they were all 32-bit. Maybe something, I don't know.

I have a laptop at work, one at home and a desktop at home. Both laptops work with version 12.0.742.100, the desktop does not work with the same version. They all work with ie, firefox, safari.

I had the same problem on a Mac and the only extension I was using was 'FlashBlock - Version: 1.2.11.13'. I used the -> '...hotkey Ctrl+Shift+F for permanent unblocking on the site' while on the hotmail page and now everything is working fine. Could be some strange  flash microsoft is trying out but i don't know much about these things.

IE and Firefox work fine, still no luck with Chrome

Hi guys, i was having the same problem as everyone mentioned but with a different email server, the server being my university. I went through disabling all my extensions and found out that the SKYPE extension was preventing me from typing or sending emails. But with that disabled I can send emails again.
I used Skype Extension - Version: 5.5.0.7280

If you click on "New Folder" first, you can then click on and open one of your other folders (junk, sent, draft etc.)

Same problem started today for me using Win7 Home Premium, Chrome 12.0.742.100. Similar problem using Opera 11.11. IE 9 and Firefox 4.1 and 5.0 do not have any problem. There has been a huge drama recently about WebMail Notifier and X Notifier not polling Hotmail. While WebMail Notifier was updated and works now X Notifier does not and is the comonality between Opera and Chrome on my PC. I hope this helps Google staff track this issue down and solve it.

Exactly the same issue... I can log in to Hotmail but can not open mails or folders. Microsoft say it is not their fault and that it is Google.

I can use hotmail in old internet explorer 7 but do not want to use microsoft browser.

Feeling a bit dizzy with all the different excuses from Microsoft and Google... some one fix this PLEASE this is the third day.

1889nin is on to something! I also use Flashblock, and I followed his advice and unblocked the hotmail page with Shift+Ctrl+F and now it works again. Hotmail now works exactly as before.

My thanks also to 1889nin.  Like Baryler, unblocking Flashblock on Chrome has worked for me too.  Maybe this is yet another Flash problem - it did start for me after I accepted a Flash update.

I have also found, like VINGOF, that Hotmail doesn't work with Chrome on a 64-bit operating system but DID work on a 32-bit machine.  I don't have any extensions installed on Chrome, so that doesn't seem to be the problem for me.

I am experiencing the same issue as everyone else here. I'm not sure if the cause of the issue is the same as everyone else, but certainly the symptoms are the same, i.e. I can log into hotmail but cannot click on any of my messages to read.

This problem started after I have installed YouTube Options (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bdokagampppgbnjfdlkfpphniapiiifn). Until I realised that I cannot access my hotmail messages, I tried disabling this extension, uninstalled it, and even re-installed Chrome, yet this is still an issue.

Perhaps the extension is still sitting somewhere on my machine and that I need to remove it manually as well? However, I'm not sure where this is located on my hard drive.

I'm using Chrome version 12.0.742.100 on Windows XP. I would appreciate any suggestions.

I don't know whether or not thats a coincidence - all I know is that it is incredibly frustrating not being able to use Hotmail on chrome still!

In addition to my post above, I've just tried accessing hotmail with Chrome on a laptop running on Windows XP without the Youtube Options extension (i.e. never have installed it), and hotmail works just fine.

After reading EmmaStanley's post above regarding Windows update a few days ago, come to think of it, I haven't actually accessed hotmail since the update. So perhaps this could be a possible cause other than the Chrome extensions that I had installed.

Ok, I've decided to take the risk of losing my hotmail access on my laptop by installing Youtube Options extension (without the XP update), just to see if that extension is the cause. Good news is that my hotmail still works in Chrome on my laptop. I guess this narrows the problem down to the XP update and had nothing to do with Youtube Options extension.

The problem happened at the same time everyone else got it.

I have no problems when using internet explorer to open emails in hotmail.

The only piece of software I have that does anything to settings on my laptop is iObit Advanced System Care 4..... don't know whether that would have any effect on this or not?

I've had the same problem for the past week and I just disabled FLASHBLOCK, it's now working!

I've had the same issue as well, but I've just found that re-logging into my Hotmail account using https://www.hotmail.com rather than selecting my bookmark favourite seemed to fix the problem.  Having re-logged in, my bookmark is also now working again.

by enabling the 'always use https' option, my prob seems to be solved fully.

Using https didn't fix anything for me.  :-\

I don't use flashblock so that isn't the problem for everyone.

i have absolutely no extensions at all and there should be no reason by what you've said so far as to why my hotmail isn't working. i've re-installed chrome several times, updated java and nothing has worked.  my hotmail works in IE and firefox, but its frustrating because i only use chrome.  please try to fix this fast!

My guess would be to look into the latest java updates. I suspect that java script does not open links due to security issues which were previously not a problem. Haven't reverted the java update here yet, though, so I'm not sure.

I have this problem, and I am running 12.0.742.100 Chrome on 32-bit XP.   (sorry VINGOF).  Here are my extensions:

IE and Firefox are able to access hotmail without a problem.  I also have noticed problems with Facebook, where after a few minutes FB freezes.  If I close the tab and open a new one it comes back to life.

After reading the post by myklcro35 this morning, I unistalled Flashblock, then found the latest Flashblock extension at the web store and installed that.

And now hotmail works!!!

One of my computers started working today. I changed nothing, it just worked. I still have another that I can't open emails or folders at all.

I first tried turning on always https as mentioned by others and it did not work.  I use flash block, soon as I added hotmail to the whitelist everything started working fine.  So my conclusion is that it has something to do with flash.  Thanks deadhead for the solution.

Disabling adblock on the *.live.com domain fixed it for me.

My problem started yesterday when I installed a Flash upgrade.  Blank reading pane is the biggest issue.  Back on IE8 temporarily (boo hoo)

It seems that Chrome is blocking the Adverts in Hotmail so Hotmail will not function. Who is to blame? This issue is not caused by updates because it started with out any.

I still can NOT open my Hotmail emails. I have un-installed and re-installed Chrome, I have no extensions installed yet I still can not get to my emails. Internet Explorer and Firefox can open my emails it is only Chrome that can't.

We all know that Google and Microsoft are forever playing dirty tricks on each other for market dominance but I am seriously unhappy about becoming collateral damage in this war.

@jimipkent How can you conclude that Google is to blame here? It could be just as easily that MS has done something to their hotmail page, so it won't work with Chrome. I'm not saying it is, but wow do you know it's not?

No need for playing the blame game yet. My Chrome stopped working, and when I disabled my Flashblocker on Hotmail.com, it worked again, so it could easily be, that MS has done something different on their site/side.

That said, it is always nice to know that somebody is working on the problems, and in that regard Google could be a bit more informative.

So far none of the supposed fixes work for me.  

I do not have Flashblock installed, and I do not have adblock either.

All I want to do is to be able to use hotmail on my favourite browser once again.

Still having the problem on one on my computers.

Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), Chrome 12.0.742.100 (no extensions). I never had flashblock or adblock ever installed. I can log into hotmail OK but can't open any email or folders. I can use IE, firefox and safari without any issues.

I still have the problem... it's been more than 5 days... i see no similarities about other users' extensions then i assume that is not the problem.

Hi, I  think something happened since I downloaded the latest Java update!
I cannot open my hotmail messages.  Even my msn messenger friends online says "charging" but nothing happens (cannot see which of my friends are online).
I uninstalled and reinstalled Chome but nothing changed. My version is 12.0.742.100

If it's any help, I have the latest version of google chrome running on Ubuntu linux and it's fine with hotmail

However I also run google chrome on windows 7 ( home and Ultimate) and neither work with hotmail
So maybe it is Microsoft and not google who have been messing around (hehe what do you think!)

Have disabled my extensions and it still doesn't work. Installed updates for Windows and Java in the past few days so I assume it's an issue with one of those.

I have no extensions installed and I'm running Vista, I do not have this problem on IE or Firefox. I also recently had windows update run and I'm not positive if this occurred afterwards or not.

I have had exactly the same issues for a few days now. I can log in to hotmail but when I click on anything nothing happens. I have tried on other computers and it works fine, but I noticed when I logged out the other day from my computer up-dates were being installed, since then it hasn't worked.

I have always used "firefox" and it has always been ok up until now I also use XP. So it isn't just chrome where the problem is.

I can log in, move about my folders, send and receive mail, and manage my mail without issue. However, I cannot see the graphics on my Calendar properly. A few times the browser has not allowed me to open my Junk and Deleted folders, but that seems to be less of an issue than it was last week.

My boyfriend is having similar issues. We both have no problems with our accounts in Internet Explorer and Firefox.

We have no extensions installed on any Chrome browser - his personal, my personal, nor my work. Please assist.

Same issue. Turning off adblock did not help. I can open it fine with the IE-tab extension. On 32 bit XP so do not think it's a 64 bit issue.

I've noticed when I open my Hotmail account in Chrome and Firefox, The ad banner in right is not showing in Chrome. Could it be the issue?

I've noticed the missing right side banner ad as well, just like ubikitus.

Also, on the left side Navigation, "Messenger" just keeps displaying "Loading..."

As many others have pointed out, the problem occurs on 64-bit systems but not on 32-bit systems.  Not sure if this is relevant, but if the javascript console is opened on the Hotmail site and you try to navigate, lots of java errors appear.

Not true for me - it works on my 64 bit laptop but not my 32 bit desktop.

Doesn't work for me on 32-bit Windows 7, so it's nothing to do with being 64/32-bit.

The right side banner not showing in Chrome clearly means there's an issue with Java, whether it's the recent Java update or a change made by Hotmail/Chrome I don't know, but my guess would be the update.

I had to download Firefox just to reply to some emails... Nice to see it's still awful despite having a facelift.

I have the same problem here. Hotmail doesn't work in chrome (it let me log in but I cannot open the emails, or use any bottom like delete, next...etc). Hotmail it does work fine in internet explorer. I didn't make any recently updates that I am aware of. It has been like this for a few days.

I have also encountered this Hotmail non-functionality issue.  Clicks in the Hotmail environment do nothing when I use the most recent Google Chrome.  Also, I have used two computers whose Google Chrome has not been recently updated; for them, Hotmail functions normally.

Try deactivating the plugin "Flashblock". it works for me now, however I hope they solve the conflict, since it's for sure one of my favourite plugin...

I have had the same issue with 12.0.742.100, Windows 7 Ultimate, and I have managed to find a source for my problems:

-click the wrench > Tools > extensions
-Disable Invisible Hand extension
-Disable Adblock extension (it must be FULLY disabled.  You can't just pause it or make it 'not run on this page')
-Close browser (this is important)
-Open browser and load hotmail

Note my versions of Invisible Hand and Adblock were old (2.4.13 and 0.9.8 respectively), I'm in the process of updating them

I just finished updating my extensions (Adblock 2.4.14, Invisible Hand 0.9.10).  Adblock still causes the issue, but it looks like Invisible Hand is fixed

does anyone know if there going to be a fix? Or is it time to switch browsers....?

The only extension is AVG safe search 10.0.0.1374 and the problem persists even when this is disabled.

I can get as far as the inbox but cant open the messages or other folders.

I noticed that the messenger which is on the main page appears to be trying to load but fails leaving the comment
"loading ......."
I can open the messages in internet explorer and using chrome on another pc.  I dont have the version data for that pc but xp would be newer as the pc is much newer.

I'm not sure if this works in Chrome, but i managed to get it to work by changing the setting in hotmail to "always use https" in I.E. to bring up the setting choice just change the http to https and it will go to two prompt/confirm pages, after i did this it worked fine.

I tried use https.. doesnt help

This is absolutely ridiculous. I can't open it in any browser and no malware has shown up!

Regarding "Unable to read e-mail in Hotmail account using Google Chrome" I deactivated the extension Flash Block and was able to use Hotmail.

Update to my previous findings:

I have my work computer on Windows 7
-same version of Chrome
-same version of Adblock
-invisible hand not installed

This setup doesn't have a problem, though I have tried mimicking the setup on my Windows 7 machine at home without luck.  I suppose I could uninstall/reinstall chrome on my home computer, but I don't have the desire to do this.

I have also tried the following addition to my shortcut:

--user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/525.19 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1 Safari/525.19"

Hotmail now thinks I am using an outdated version of Safari, but does not fix the issue.  I tried to switch the 3.1 with 5.0, but this does not provide help, either.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. Haven't been able to use Hotmail in Chrome for around 3 weeks now. All functionality other than sign in / out is broken.

I've already commented before to say my home laptop and work PC running latest updated Win XP and Chrome (no extensions) do not work in hotmail. None of the solutions provided so far have worked. It would be nice to be updated to let us know if you are still looking to find a solution (bit like how Sony PSN kept us up-to-date even if they didn't say much)

I have found that I have similar problems with some other websites different from hotmail. Maybe a javascript problem??

Hope you find the solution soon, it is very anoying to switch browser everytime I want to read my email and I don't want to stop using chrome.

My browser is in the Beta channel (13.0.782.32 beta-m on Win7 Pro 64-Bit), so this problem spans versions.
But no, I can't select messages on the Hotmail page (http://co123w.col123.mail.live.com/default.aspx?wa=wsignin1.0). I CAN select check-boxes next to mails but the action bar (New, Reply, Reply All, etc.) is unresponsive.
I've updated Flash, Java (& Shockwave) and checked other add-ons in case they needed an update.

Not like it matters for me now, i'm using Firefox and it works fine! :)

Just click the spanner and open up new incognito window and open hotmail works for me.
The normal browser doesn't work even with cookies deleted extensions disabled and all the google employee suggestions.

All cookies deleted (What's the point in cookies if the first thing that's ALWAYS suggested is to delete them? It's a modern-day "Reboot the machine")

We suggest clearing cookies because in some cases, they can get corrupted and cause issues. Thanks. 

Deleted cookies, checked javascript, and then used an incognito window.  None of those fixed anything for me.

@Toni - Works fine in an incognito window. Just emailed to/from myself from an incognito window to test. Just in case you're thinking it - I don't have AdBlock, FlashBlock, etc. in the first place....

@ Sie Deen:  I have done as directed.  Cookies had been cleaned in earlier attempts, no changes needed to recommended settings.
Installed extensions on home computer listed below.  I enabled them one by one, the only one currently preventing hotmail from working is AdBlock.  Once AdBlock is disabled from Tools > Extensions and the browser is restarted, Hotmail will work until AdBlock is re-enabled.

@Sie_Deen I'm a previous poster on this thread who has the latest version of Win XP and Chrome (12.0.742.100) with no extensions. I've tried your suggestions regarding cookies and javascript & other settings. Hotmail still doing the same thing. Tried using an incognito window, hotmail still doesn't work in this either.

Using newest Chrome (12.0.742.112) and no extensions on XP and Hotmail does not work. Tried all your recommendations on https, flashblock etc. didn't make any difference.....

@Toni Seems my problem is flashblock i disable flashblock restart chrome and hotmail works.
Is It's blocking silverlight script rather than flash?

None of the 'solutions' posted so far have solved it for me. I've also come across quite a few other websites not functioning properly in Chrome, that work fine in Firefox.

Chrome 12.0.742.112 on Vista Home Premium SP2.  It doesn't work in incognito mode, or after clearing cache and cookies.  JavaScript and other settings are as recommended, all extensions disabled.  It does work in IE, Safari, Firefox, and Opera.  Don't know when exactly that it stopped working but it has been a while.  Chrome has been updated maybe twice since that.

i am seeing the same issue Chrome 12.0.742.100 with Windows 7 premium . incognito  mode has the same issue. works fine in Safari 5.0.3, IE 8.0.7600.16385.

Chrome 12.0.742.112, Windows XP Professional for me.  I actually uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome when the problems started last week. I went through the bullets in Toni's reply above, and nothing has made a difference.  No windows or software updates that I'm aware of.  I don't have Safari installed, so I can't check that.

Hotmail is working just fine via Chrome on my laptop at home.  I can check that version this evening if it would be helpful.

After weeks with no solution I think it's time for me to go back to firefox. Good luck finding the solution !

Yes, one windows update was installed around June 16th, I believe chrome was also updated around the same time.
Adobe Flash was updated around the same time, not sure if it was before or after the problem.

This problem does not appear in Firefox or IE

I checked to see what was installed or updated around the time (6/16) I started having the issue:

1. Chrome 12.0.742.112
2. Microsoft Silverlight 4.0.60531.0
3. Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Applications 2.0 - 9.0.30729.6161
4. Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.6161
5. Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable - 8.0.61001

Lots of Microsoft stuff.

Incognito Mode WAS working as a temp fix but after a reboot, now doesn't. I'd rebooted before but Incognito Mode WAS working.

Only possible is that Microsoft and/or Google are messing about, changing things on a trial & error basis and not owning up to it.

I say that because nothing (other than two definition updates for MS Security Essentials) has changed on my PC. No updates were installed during my last reboot, one of several reboots since this issue arose.

I've been trying to fix this problem since it occured over a week ago. I'm an IT tech and solving problems like this are not uncommon to me but I've tried everything I can think of and spent several hours removing, reinstalling, adding, clearing, booting, updating, downgrading, restoring, changing, configuring... everything short of reloading Windows. I wouldn't have done all this for any other browser but I've been using Chrome for a while now and really like it. But now it seems like there's some kind of corruption or incomatibility that is essentially unfixable at this time short of reinstalling the OS (I have the same version of Chrome installed on another system with the same OS and similar setup and it doesn't have this problem which makes it all the more frustrating and mysterious). In any event, it looks like it's time for me to say goodbye to Chrome and hello to Safari. "Chrome, it was nice while it lasted.... "

The flash ads don't show up in the side column of the page with the inbox. I feel like that's the problem, maybe.  I started using the mobile version of hotmail which does work but it's too hard to use.
I wish the developers could recreate the problem!

Yes, there is a connection with the fact that the ad banner on the right side doesn't show up. I suspected a problem with flash or java but when I disabled flash and java plugins on my system that doesn't have this problem, hotmail still worked normally. On my problem system, disabling the plugins had no effect. My systems are both running XP pro. I think it's odd that uninstalling Chrome takes about 2 seconds which makes me think that it's not fully uninstalling everything so when you try to reinstall Chrome the problem is still there.

Even though I've started using safari (which by the way is a good replacement for chrome in my opinion) I still have a hard time letting this issue go (there's nothing like the feeling of fixing this kind of problem to keep you working on it). In an attempt to help diagnose this problem, here is a list of things I have tried that have had no effect. OS is XP pro sp3.

cleared cache and cookies
ran in incognito mode
Removed and reinstalled chrome
removed and reinstalled java and flash plugins
installed older flash plugin
disabled java and flash plugins
installed an earlier version of chrome
created a new windows user profile
did a windows system restore back to a month before the problem began.
uninstalled chrome, removed all registry entries I could find that referenced chrome, removed all files or folders I could find that were chrome related, reinstalled chrome.

I also think that MS has recently changed hotmail a bit (the login page no longer has the option to remember the user name for example) but even so this problem does not affect all chrome users.

I'm having the same problem on XP.  I normally have AdBlock and Invisible Hand but I disabled both those and still the problem remained.  I uninstalled Chrome (losing all my extensions) and re-installed the current version but there's still no change.  As gbz1931 has said, Microsoft seem to have been messing around a bit with Hotmail but I'm not having any problems with Hotmail in Opera, Firefox or on my iPad, just in Chrome.

confirmed that disabling FlashBlock - Version: 1.2.11.12 using Google Chrome 12.0.742.112 on Mac OS X 10.6.8 restores full Hotmail functionality. Did not need to restart Chrome nor use incognito window, was able to click all emails and delete them/move them as needed. Once FlashBlock was re-enabled, functionality was lost.

Bouncing between 2 browsers has become extremely annoying so I'm using this workaround until permanent fix is released.

I login to Hotmail within this extension and all is good.

It may be Flash Block in some cases but I've never installed it (never installed any chrome extensions for that matter). Also Incognito mode didn't have any effect for me. However, the problem does seem to be related to flash or java script processing I think.
I haven't tried it yet but the IE Tab ext does look like a decent work-around that may work for most people having this problem. Thanks.

This looks more and more like an intrinsic Chrome problem.

I have been facing this problem from last four days, its not working in IE & Chrome as well. I have tried all the steps given.  I have seen my e-mails, one week before. Is this a problem with Browser or Hotmail.

if FLASHBLOCK installed login to your Hotmail account in Chrome and press CTRL+SHIFT+F , this will add hotmail to flashblock's white list or something...

I am having the same problem.  I am also stunned that 5 pages of complaints later the computer genius's at Google havent found a solution, are not even able to recreate it.  If I had a company worth infinite amount of money I would send one of my techs out to the closest person having the problem (with their consent of course), find a fix at their house, and post it here for everyone to see.  But 190 replies later and we dont have anything? I would find that unacceptable.

I opened the Java console. When Clicking on a mail I see a long URL with the following message :
Unsafe JavaScript attempt to access frame with URL
Domains, protocols and ports must match.

Hi, this has been happening to me for nearly a month now and I'm desperate for a fix because I can't standing having to resort to IE to check my Hotmail.

- What is your Chrome version number (Wrench -> About Google Chrome) and operating system (e.g. WinXP, etc)?
12.0.742.112 beta, WinXP

- Open Hotmail using Chrome's incognito mode window (Ctrl + Shift + N)
Tried - no success

- Clear cache and cookies (select "beginning of time" to clear everything)  [see ref 1]
Tried - no success

- Check that JavaScript and other settings have the recommended settings. [see ref 2]
All ok

- Did you install a Windows update around the time of the issue?
No windows update

- Did you install or update any other software at the time of the issue?
I did notice that a Google Earth icon appeared on my desktop out of the blue around the time that this began, so a Google update must have occurred. Aside from that, no I did not install any other software.

- Does this happen in Safari?
I don't have Safari, but I do not experience this issue in IE or Firefox.

Following on from my post above, I just tried accessing Hotmail through Windows Live Mobile on Chrome and had success accessing my emails:

But of course this is nowhere near as functional as the full browser version of Hotmail.

PROBLEM FIXED....for me anyway!

I have not been able to do anything in hotmail on Chrome for absolutely weeks.  This morning I tried logging on by using HTTPS://hotmail.com and it worked, it would appear it was a security issue as before I was always accessed with HTTP not HTTPS....as soon as I added the 'S' it asked to amend a security feature and job done, I can now access my emails with no problems what so ever.

Not sure if this is an isolated problem and fix for myself but why not try.

Wish it was that simple, Laylajo, but it didn't have any efferct on mine.

I'm also using the IE Tab by Blackfish Software to handle the situation until Google gets it resolved.  Using the https:// prefix or incognito mode don't work for me.

Now, when I try to log into Hotmail using Chrome, I get this message:

"Server error
An invalid response was received while attempting to load http://by161w.bay161.mail.live.com/default.aspx. The server may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly."

I don't get this message in IE.

I have version: 12.0.742.112 m windows XP and i can log into hotmail but i cant access any of my messages or delete or empty junk folders etc, I can however log out of hotmail. sweet. not.

This just gets sillier. Replying (not typing the email address AND using GMail in Chrome!) to an email from Google requesting my permission to pass on details to MS, I get the below message. After 2 or 3 exchanges back and forth, they've deleted their OWN email address? I can appreciate why my ex-wife changed her email but....

- Cookies & cache deleted
- Javascript, popups, etc allowed for Hotmail

I am running Chrome 12.0.742.112 on Windows 7. The only extensions I am running are RealPlayer HTML5Video Downloader Extension and SiteAdvisor,. I tried clearing my history and cache, but that did not work. The problem has been occurring intermittently for several weeks. I can login to Hotmail, but cannot click on any links. It works at sometimes, but seems to be worse at night. Hotmail works perfectly on Internet Explorer.

Using Windows 7 64bit (64bit the issue?)
Only extension is RealPlayer HTML5Video Downloader Extension

Hopefully Google you can get this fixed asap, I'd prefer to carry on using Chrome.

I've the same problem.   I am able to log in just fine, but then when I click on anything, nothing happens.  I can't read emails, I can't send new emails, or reply. I've Windows 7, with IE9. It was all working uptill last week. Can any one help?

Just a quick update that we are still investigating the issue and Microsoft is currently in direct contact with some of our users to troubleshoot.  For those of you who we had reached out to through email, if you are unable to Reply to the email, you can reply here instead.

Google & Microsoft contacted me and after providing the info they needed it seems they have a firm handle on the problem.
There may be more to this but some Javascript wasn't loading for my account (and clearly many others).
My educated guess (I'm a software engineer) is that it should be quite simple to fix but it may take time for them to test it to ensure it doesn't break something else, build an internal/external release, etc.
So, I would expect them to be working on an update right now & depending on the time projected, possibly a temporary workaround in the mean time.

Install the IE TAB extension and then run hotmail inside of it, now it works fine.

I am assuming that the extension runs IE inside of a google chrome tab, soooo is using two programs and twice the ram to do what is currently working with just plain firefox and IE.

PS I uninstalled google chrome, navigated to the local folder where user profile and program is stored and [shift] + [deleted] everything, rebooted, reinstalled google chrome, no extensions, and does not worrk.

I have the same problem, no extensions, runs fine in ie will not work in chrome portable. It started about 6 days ago.

Incognito mode seems to work for me now.

Hotmail in Chrome works for me at home, but not at work.  Same extensions running in both locations.

Could it be something to do with MSN Messenger on the Hotmail page?  At work Messenger is blocked by Websense, so under Messenger is just says "loading" or "Messenger isn't available now."
The only link on the left that seems to work is "New Folder".  Click it, now at the 'New Folder' page any link on the left will work.  And note that Messenger does not show on this page, so maybe the lack of messenger on this page allows the page to work correctly.

Is there a way to remove MSN Messenger from the Hotmail page?

What would probably help from all of us is a little patience and reading what has already been posted before repeating. Makes it harder for those trying to sort this out to wade through 100 repeats & moans to find new information.
Personally speaking I advise against any config changes on the part of users for now unless specifically advised to do so by MS or Google.
MS's Hotmail team & Google ARE aware of the nature of the problem and are well on their way to rectifying it. It'll go quicker if folk are responsible in reporting problems.
If you'd like to flame them, by all meansdo so but not here - there are plenty other places.

Hotmail is now working for me, anybody else?  The only thing I've done out of the ordinary is that I plugged my work laptop into my home network briefly yesterday, and now today at the office Hotmail works when it wouldn't before.

I confirm that my Hotmail is also working now. I updated Google Chrome to the last version released today: 12.0.742.122 and Hotmail seems to be working like it should. However, since this problem lasted for so long, I now got too attached with Firefox :S
Let's hope this sort of problems don't occur anymore with Chrome, or if they do happen, at least that we can expect a fix a lot earlier than the several weeks we had to wait for this one.

The issue seems to be fixed. Thanks Google, Microsoft, whoever... Now it would be cool if the Google rep would make a post giving us some insight as to the cause of the problem and how it was resolved.

Following a windows update, it's now working for me - still using the same version of chrome where there was previously a problem.

I did a Windows update today and also now have the latest version of Chrome. Hotmail STILL not working - hangs up on the default.aspx file not loading. Issue not fixed for me in Chrome. Firefox works intermittently. I am using the fix someone posted here for accessing hotmail through Gmail.

Im also having an issue with Hotmail pretty much the same as everyone else taking a really long time to load some times i have to do it multiple times when it does load it runs really slow and i cant click on links in emails and and lag all around tried using Hotmail with most recent stable beta and most current release and none fixed issue all default settings in chrome and ..no plug ins.

I had similar problems with hotmail and other webpages like Youtube werent loading/appearing like how they should be, so I downloaded Chrome 13 beta, then cleared all cache and cookies and it works again! Thanks! Hopefully it'll stay this way

@nebulae,  I suspect that the current user profile you are using is corrupt.  Can you try creating a new browser user profile - Ref[1]

OK I had the same prob. I found that if I sign in using incognito i could view my mail in hotmail and now after doing so I can use regular i-google again. Give it a shot it worked for me. good luck. If you don't know what incognito is, in the right hand top corner of your i-google home page there is a wrench, click it and a drop down window will appear, select the 3rd option from the top   "New incognito window" then go to your hotmail account through that window.

Nothing that I have tried in this thread has worked for me.

I am using Chrome 13.0.782.107 m with Windows 7 Home Premium SP 1 64 bit.

I have already cleared the cache and cookies.

Extensions are AdBlock and AVG Antivirus  I have disabled both with no help.

I do see this issue under Safari as well though I never ever use it - I just ran it to test because it was listed as a question.

I created a new user profile, did not import anything at all and still it does not work.

All links for hotmail messages and the side bar links are the same and lead to the same page if opened on a new tab or in incognito.

All the links are pointing at the same site which is the main mail page for my Hotmail inbox.  It is the SAME issue that EVERYONE ELSE IN THE THREAD is having.  If I open a link for a message or for my Sent folder or for any of the links they have on the side bar or across the top in a new tab, a new window, or a new incognito window all it does it open the inbox again.

This is not due to malware, I have antivirus running all the time and scan regularly.  I am not getting any "weird popups".  I have Windows auto update on so yeah I imagine there have been some software changes but I cannot say specifically what they are.  I saw this problem the day I posted but I am guessing it happened prior; I do not check Hotmail daily.

This is getting REALLY frustrating especially when you are trying to foist it off on the ever present "malware" monster.  I am not an idiot, I do not download illegal software or click on links I get from Nigeria or other stupid things.  It seems obvious to me that it is a Google issue due to all the other replies in this thread, not all of which have been resolved.

After some trial and error figured out that disabling the "Better Popup Blocker" extension did the trick. Though someone might find it useful.

I have also had this problem for some while now, being able to access Hotmail, but unable to open any emails etc.

By disabling Tamper Monkey, I am now able to use Hotmail again.

I established it was this addon causing my problems by disabling/enabling my addons one by one.

Not sure which TM script was causing issues, but Hotmail works fine now, so I am happy to disable the app for the time being.

Hi  Update to above Tamper Monkey being responsible for Hotmail issues.  I have found by re enabling TM, but disabling its 'Userscripts Updater'  Hotmail works perfectly.

So TM can stay for now - just happy Hotmail works again!

Nothing happens when I left click on a link either.  If I use right click and select new tab or incognito, these will open but only to the inbox, not the message that was right clicked.  Ergo, nothing works in Hotmail for me either.

Everybody says that the issue has closed!! but how is this? we are still having the same problem and nothing changes! i have no extensions on my chrome. the only additional may be some proxy settings. can this be the problem?

The issue absolutely has NOT been closed, as I am having the same problem.  And there is not issue with Hotmail, as I am able to view all functions when using MS Explorer.  I am a new user and have had to use two browsers ever since installing Chrome a couple of weeks ago...MS Explorer for Hotmail and Chrome for everything else.

The following worked for me.  Hopefully it will work for you as well:

1. From your Hotmail mailbox, go to Options - More Options
2. Under Customizing Hotmail, choose Advanced Privacy Settings.
3. Under Using HTTPS for extra security, click on Go to HTTPS settings. You will be taken to HTTPS settings in your accounts page.
4. Choose Use HTTPS automatically. Click Save.

Just a quick fix that I used....

I use the Chrome extension called "Better Pop Up Blocker" and Hotmail wouldn't allow me to open emails etc... so I went into the extension options and made use of the Whitelist Web Sites option and entered in, as per the instructions listed there:

^(http[s]?:\/\/[a-z0-9\._-]+\.|http[s]?:\/\/)hotmail\.[a-z]+($|\/)
^(http[s]?:\/\/[a-z0-9\._-]+\.|http[s]?:\/\/)live\.[a-z]+($|\/)

to allow any uses of Hotmail or Live in the address bar... and it works fine now... quick and easy! :)

JoeBlow42's tip worked for me, almost. I changed the settings (via IE) but it didn't seem to work when I went back to Chrome. But the tip to temporarily change the setting by typing "HTTPS://" in front of the regular URL worked! Also, better for me, since changing the setting permanently is not supposed to work with Live Mail.

Hey, i just fixed my problem and it was an extension called "Face theme".When i would try to get on hotmail, the page would freeze and i couldnt click on anything. Facetheme was my only extension and when i uninstalled it, i could login to hotmail just fine. don't ask me why it worked though because i have no idea.

Yep... it's definitely Facetheme...  I went to "Settings" (or "Options (the wrench)) clicked on "view background pages" the extensions are highlighted in yellow, found "Facetheme", clicked on it, clicked "End process".  DONE!  If you get a notification saying Facetheme crashed, just close it.  I went to Hotmail and... IT WORKED!  Hope this works for others.

for the record, google chrome comes with the facetheme plug-in already installed so even if you think you don't have any extentions, check for it anyway.

I finally found a solution for this... maybe too late but owh well... haha... i disabled my skype calling and constant guard protection suite... must ahve been the constant guard protection suite. it helped me.

I Had This Problem And Luckily I Resolved It.

I Had The Following Add Ons

3: Collision
4: Vid-Saver

The Problem Was Caused Because In The "Collision For Chrome" Add On
I Had The "Block Known Tracking Sites" Active,
I Simply Un-clicked That And Presto, Hotmail Worked Again.

I Would Advise People To Check All Their Add Ons To See If They
Are Blocking Any Sites In Any Way, If So Inactivate Or Delete The Add On.
If Not, Use Another Browser Like Internet Explorer Or Firefox Until You Have Found A Solution.

I get a message that "Google Chrome's connection attempt to login.live.com was rejected. Some clown from Windows said he fixed my hotmail account, and that the problem was with my computer. I have run my antivirus and cleanup software and there are no problems indicated. Further, all my other programs run perfectly well. I deleted all the hotmail and windows live software and tried to download anew. I still get the same message as above. Is the issue between Chrome and Windows? Has anybody else had a similar problem?

I had the same problem. Once I have disabled few "extensions" in my Chrome browser, everything was back to normal. And now I can view my inbox mail in Hotmail from my Chrome browser.

It seems like some "extensions" like "pop up blockers" or "add blocker" could cause some bug with the Hotmail website.
