Re: How do I make English my default language bookmarkjedi 12/28/08 12:57 PM
I have the same question. I am EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED trying to set the default Google search on Chrome to English (google.com), rather than the country I happen to be searching from.

I went into Options > Default search > Manage, then tried to edit the Google (Default), to no avail. I tried adding a new Google URL and making that the new default, but could not manage to do so. Arrrrgh!

Firefox has been eating away at my CPU, but this single issue is keeping me from switching to Google as my default browser. Of course, there's no guarantee I'd keep Chrome as my default browser without all the essential add-ons that I've been relying on in Firefox.
Re: How do I make English my default language antfox 2/10/09 1:01 PM
I had the same problem, but this seemed to fix it...

1. Right Click the Address Bar and select "Edit Search Engine"

2. Highlight the Google (default) and click Edit.

3. Highlight the URL and copy it (ctrl + c). Then click Cancel.

4. Click Add, enter Name like "Google English" and put anything in Keyword, it won't matter.

5. Paste in the URL the one you copied and change  {google:baseURL} to http://www.google.com/

6. Click OK and Make Default. Any keywork now you enter in the address bar will now have the english version.

Hope that helps

Ant

The problem Im having is Google chrome its self installed in a native language, I cant read aribic and i happened to install it here,  anyway to fix this ?
Re: How do I make English my default language bookmarkjedi 2/19/09 11:29 PM
Thanks antfox, your tip worked just fine. One reminder: on step 5, when I replaced {google:baseURL} with http://www.google.com/, the copy paste ended up putting in a space at the end that I did not notice at first. I had to go back to get rid of the extra space in order to get it to work, but now it works fine.

Thanks again!

I've managed to find out a way to make google english permanently. All you need to do is type- http://www.google.com/intl/en/      instead of-     http://www.google.com. Then that's it. Then you type it in the options menu as your home page.

Re: How do I make English my default language tiamiceli 12/10/09 7:01 AM
Google chrome for Mac needs to respect the language preferences chosen in OSX.
I have a Swiss or French IP, but I need google/blogger/igoogle/everything to be the default ENGLISH that I selected on my Mac. And so I don't get snotty replies, YES I did "edit search engines" and changed my homepage from google.ch to google.com, but it still forwards me to google.ch!

This is unacceptable to assume I want German pages based on my IP.

I'm moving back to Safari until this is fixed.
Re: How do I make English my default language Reflessi 2/22/10 11:29 PM
Have tried a few of the suggested options, but to no avail.

I cannot believe that Google does not know the frustration that this causes and builds in some sort of easy fix via an error box!

1.  Go to the spanner
2.  pick Options
3.  under Basics, look for Default search
4.  click [Manage]
5.  highlight one of the entries under Default search engines and click [Edit]
6.  paste the following URL: http://www.google.com/intl/en/
7.  in the 'keyword' field, key the word: google (the URL in the field below will enter itself in background colour)
6.  click [OK]
7.  highlite all other entries in turn and delete them!
8.  click [close]
Re: How do I make English my default language Srin 2/26/10 3:46 PM
On your Mac, go to System Preferences
Go to Language & Text under Personal
In the Languages Tab, Change Order for Sorted Lists to Standard (first selection on top)
In the "Drag Languages in the order your prefer", drag English to be on top
Go to Input Sources tab
Uncheck the On checkbox for all languages except US
Now exit Chrome and open it again.

That did it for me. Please indicate if it helped.

Hi electro

Please follow my instructions above.

You may have missed a step, or you are trying to change the URL.  The URL will change itself when you paste the address http://www.google.com/intl/en/  into the NAME: field... not into the URL address field.

Best wishes Riflessi

Hi Dejan1024... would u like to update your picture for Google Chrome 5.0 ? A lot of the options have changed... steps 4, 5 and 6 in your picture...
I just wish Google made it simpler to set default language to English... I wonder what they get by keeping this so complicated !!!
Thanks...
Re: How do I make English my default language Dejan1024 5/29/10 11:33 AM
@niceguy4sure: I am running Chrome 5.0 Stable and the options have not changed. Are you running the Beta or Dev versions?

Changing Chrome's language is probably not so simple because you don't do it every day :) Most users will change languages once or not even once, so there's no need to make it more accessible or simple.
Re: How do I make English my default language niceguy4sure 5/29/10 9:08 PM

FOR PEOPLE THAT WANT THEIR DEFAULT SEARCHES ALWAYS IN ENGLISH:

antfox's answer is outdated: you can't edit the URL anymore.

click the + sign when you get to managing search engines (under basics tab in preferences on Mac)

label the search engine whatever you want, and paste this: http://www.google.com/search?q=%s

into the url space. Then highlight your new 'search engine' and click 'make default'

Phew! I'm glad I figured this out before I smashed my computer out of frustration.

Good luck!
Re: How do I make English my default language setandugal 10/2/10 7:20 AM
I was having same problem. the thing is when you're trying to download chrome you must've ignored the language option when you're about to download. so the best way is to uninstall chrome, then try to download it again but this time around pay attention to the language option, that's it
Re: How do I make English my default language ajo8950 10/4/10 4:19 AM
Used the suggestion from tttttsssss to fix this and it works fine.  However, when I used to be able to type my search query into the address bar, now whenever I do that, it takes me to the Google home page and I have to retype my search.

I loved being able to type my searches into the address bar and find what I was looking for. Now I can't do that so I'm considering switching back for that functionality. However, my original problem where search results were displayed in Chinese, will still exist. Back to square one.

Any suggestions from people who are a whole lot smarter than me?

Easy.   i was frustrated about this myself 2 minutes before.
just when you search something, and your search appears in some other language.  don't get mad.

1.  go to "Settings"-"Search Settings", which is on top right side of the page right left to "Sign Out"
2.  you should see:  Display Google tips and messages in.......ENGLISH.  voila!

Good luck.

Re: How do I make English my default language gpsvn 11/2/10 6:53 AM
downloaded the English version of Chrome, and I am living in a Arab country though I don't speak, read or write Arabic. My problem is Google keeps on changing the language to Arabic, then offer translation. There is countless time that I go to the wrench, options, under the hood, change font and language settings and set it to English. But it does not solve the problem. Is there anyway that regardless of the country I am in, set the page language to English, not Chinese, not Japanese, not Russian, not Arabic. English please!!!!

Google Chrome version:7.0.517.41
Operating System: Vista
URLs (if applicable): Gmail.com, Google.com
Expected Result: Page in English
Observed Result: Page in Arabic, Chinese, Russian,

Google, please stop detecting the territory and change the language, if you do, please give us a chance to select our preferred language, give us a choice, do not change it when you think it cool.

Re: How do I make English my default language syrdax 11/21/10 3:04 AM
My problem with language was fixed, I even turned Windows 7 into English (bought in Spain for instance in Spanish), but, whenever I want to download certain files like Picasa, it doesn't matter if I search for "picasa in English", once I click the link, the download gets redirected to the local language, for that, no matter how many settings I have in English, I keep getting the Spanish version. This must have something to do with the IP address, because whenever I go to IMDB for example, I get the movie titles in Spanish, despite me setting it to English. I hate localization.

I have a different language version of Chrome installed on my machine, thanks to Google's unhelpful automatic choosing of language when I originally installed it.  I tried downloading it again with language set to English on the download page, but it still came up in the foreign language.  If I uninstall Chrome before downloading, what do I use to download it?  IE???  Gimme a break!!!
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 12/15/10 11:04 AM
I love it that Chrome/Google's help about setting your language to your preferred one is completely ignored by every Google site. I have three English language settings in my Chrome browser, which is also an EN language installed browser on an English language version of Windows.

What does Chrome do? It offers me the Chrome beta EULA in French, because that's just where I happen to be located. There's not even a hl= tag in the URL I can change.
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 12/15/10 11:19 AM
Here's Google/Chrome's help topic: http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95416

"Google Chrome's font and language settings let you read the Web and use the browser in your native tongue."

It's a complete fantasy.
Re: How do I make English my default language Blair (Googler) 12/21/10 10:56 PM
Hey guys,

People seem to be experiencing two different issues here.

The first issue is that the browser language is incorrect. This is the language that all the menu items are in. This can be fixed when installing by selecting your language of choice from the drop-down menu above the install button on the install page, www.google.come/chrome. It can also be fixed after installation, by changing the language using the diagram that Dejan created, which is in my references below.

The second issue is that even when the browser language is correct, Chrome is searching in the wrong language. To set this language to English, follow tttttssss' steps:

1. Go to Wrench > Options (Preferences on Mac) > Basics > Search > Manage
2. Select Add ("+" sign on Mac)
3. For "Name" and "Keyword," type the letter "a"
5. Click O.K.
6. Select your new search engine from the list and click "Make default"
7. Click "Close"

We're looking into whether there's anything we can do on our end to make this easier for you. Thanks for the feedback, and many thanks to Dejan and ttttssss for their help.

Best,
Blair

Also a relevant Piece of Information

If your Language is Not to English and all the steps described does not work like Installing from here :-
www.google.come/chrome

Or Wrench Icon :- Options :- under the hood tab :- scroll down & click on change language settings > languages tab :- From drop down change it to your required language !

And you are experiencing the problem of Not going by the suggested steps through the language that your browser has changed to then the following screen-shot would prove very helpful for you all !

Hope this also helps !

And about the "Second issue " , as mentioned by Blair , searching in the wrong language or giving the search results based on that particular language or region and not like based on "www.google.com" , you can check the reference !

@Blair - thanks for your response, very helpful.  I have one more issue along similar lines: My browser language and search language are English, but when I go to the Google Help pages (e.g. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/chrome) I am directed to the German language pages, either because I am in Germany or because my keyboard or system settings are German.

Cheers

Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 1/14/11 1:40 PM
Thanks Nayan for providing the thread.

@Nikl B,

The Help Center is determined by the Browser language setting. Do you mind telling me what the language setting is in: Options> Under the Hood > Change font and language setting > Languages > Google Chrome language?

Please also let us know what version of Chrome you're on and what's your platform (e.g. Windows XP, Mac OSX, etc)

@youthfulguru

If you can let us know how you're performing the search, that will help us to help you. If you're in a non-English country, please see Nayan's post to see how to set your default search engine to English.

Thanks,

TK

How to correct wrong browser language for Dev version, currently with "Options" dialog on a tab (no more pop-up; no more "Under the Hood" tab; no more language options -only font and encoding options).

Also: no way to change language on page where Dev installer is downloaded from (http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?extra=devchannel).

System: Win XP Pro. Windows language setting: Spanish (required for my general purpose needs; but I want browser language in English).

Thanks in advance.
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 1/24/11 10:34 AM
@JBIZZY,

Which browser are you using to download Google Chrome? Are you located in a non-English IP area?
The page is determined by the browser language you use to download. On the download page, please check the top right hand corner, there's a drop down menu to select the language you want to download.

@gilsofuy

I would recommend getting on Beta Channel or Stable Channel for that purpose. Thank you.

TK
Re: How do I make English my default language gilsofuy 1/24/11 4:38 PM
@Tomoya Kawasaki:

Many thanks for your answer. I had already tried to install Dev from a stable channel, but to no avail. The problem is that the default language for the Dev download is Spanish (in my case), with no drop down menu on the top right hand corner, so the default language for the downloaded browser is still Spanish. Canary build 10.0.645.0  has restored the ability to set the default browser language in the tabbed Options dialog, so this problem does not exist any more. I believe this would be the most straightforward solution also for the Dev channel.
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 1/25/11 2:25 AM
@Tomoya: " The page is determined by the browser language you use to download."

No it's not. I have English language browser and English language settigns everywhere, but because I happen to be in a French IP area, large chunks of UI, including Google EULAs etc switched into French. There is not even an editable parameter in the URLs that would correct this.

Also setting your search engine language to English does not affect all the other ways that Google screws up language in its other products. Also, after a few minutes, Google will reset the search engine language based on IP address, regardless of where you started.
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 1/25/11 9:38 AM
@Mike W

Thanks for your note. I presume you're using Google Chrome to view those pages.

When you are on the download page (www.google.com/chrome) do you see a drop down menu on the top right corner? You can select the language you wish to download from there.

For search, our search engine will be influenced by IP to give you the result. If you don't want to be redirected, you can search via this domain www.google.com/ncr. NCR stands for "no country redirect."

Re: How do I make English my default language gilsofuy 1/28/11 12:11 AM
I am pleased to say that this issue has been solved, for the Dev channel, with build 10.0.648.6: the ability to change the default browser language has been reinstated in the Options dialog: Options / Under The Hood / Web Content / "Languages and spell-checker settings" button.

Thanks to all.
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 2/15/11 7:20 AM
http://www.google.com/landing/chrome/beta/ has no language selection option, on the page or in its URL.

(I just came to this page again as I was in Picasa (English language), clicked Help>Picasa Forums, and was taken to the French forums. There are so many places in Google products where IP address takes over, it's just not funny. There's also no point in complaining about this example on Picasa forums as they just ignore all the international bugs - e.g. showing all printer paper sizes in US Imperial, regardless of region settings.)

As beta should only be English, what language is it that you see.

What version of Chrome are you on? You should be able to set your language preferences to tell what language to display.
Re: How do I make English my default language AtifSiddiqui 3/14/11 1:38 AM
I am on version 10.0.648.133 and i still have the same problem.

1. my default language at Options> Under the Hood > Change font and language setting > Languages > Google Chrome language is English and still i see regional languages when i search from the address bar.

2. the worst as it is, i can't add a new search engine in Options > Search > Manage Search Engines. It shows default search engines, and other search engines. Neither, I can't edit the any of the default search engines, nor I can add a new one. As I add a new one, with name, and URL there is no save button as apparently 'Enter' key isn't saving that as well.

Please help me out, I don't wanna switch back to IE as this is really making me to do so.
Re: How do I make English my default language dyllos 3/18/11 6:39 AM
Come on GOOGLE - the solution is simple. When a user is logged into a Google Account - that account's language setting should prevail (and for ALL google services of that account) - doesn't matter the browser, OS, or anything.

AM SICK AND TIRED OF CHANGING LANGUAGE SETTINGS SO FREQUENTLY!!!
Re: How do I make English my default language Blair (Googler) 3/18/11 3:44 PM
Hey everybody,

To download Chrome in English, select "English" from the "Select a language" drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner of the screen on www.google.com/chrome. This menu may be hard to see, as the page may be in a language you don't read, but the first link in my references should help: http://i50.tinypic.com/347e720.jpg

To change Chrome to English once you've already downloaded it, follow the steps in the second link in my references: http://www.dropmocks.com/mSlSb. You can hit the right arrow on your keyboard to navigate through the slideshow. Note that some languages, like Arabic, read right-to-left, and so the buttons are in slightly different places.

Some people have the problem that even when the browser language is correct, Chrome is searching in the wrong language.

Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 4/6/11 3:42 PM
@Genghis518,

Do you have Windows or Mac? When you go to the download page, www.google.com/chrome, there should be a language drop down on the top right hand corner. To help us understand, how did you get the Russian version?

Also, what defaults to Russian, the browser language or the search result?

Thanks,
TK
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 4/7/11 2:07 PM
@Tomoya: You are not reading my posts. I wrote several times that I was seeing French.

"What version of Chrome are you on? You should be able to set your language preferences to tell what language to display. "

I was using the most current version at the time of posting - it automatically updates.... Version now is 11.0.696.34 beta

As I keep stating (with examples) the language preferences for Chrome DOES NOT WORK with Google web properties. Believe me I was managing software internationalisation for years and know how to set language preferences. Even when I set my language preferences to be only English, Google products ignore this and use my French IP address. I see this for my google profile, for Google maps, blogger, etc etc.

Right now, if I go to a Blogger page, the top line of the screen says
"Partager Signaler un abus Blog suivant»        Créer un blog Connexion"
Just to repeat, if you're not aware. This is FRENCH.

My Chrome language setting is English (United Kingdom) followed by English (US). I don't even have French listed as an alternate.
(chrome://settings/languages)
Version is 11.0.696.34 beta
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 4/11/11 2:24 PM
@Mike W,

Does everything still show in French after you have signed in Google account?

Can you try one trick for me? Actually go ahead and add French into the language list, but leave it at the bottom, and see if this will change anything. I presume your browser interface is also set to English.

Thanks,

TK
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 4/12/11 1:01 AM
@Tomoya: After I sign in, most of the UI becomes English, but contextual messages such as server status or sign-in issues are in French. I've reported this issue to Blogger folks (as have others) in recent years, with absolutely no response.

Even logged in, if you follow internal links to Google profile or help pages, you can still be switched to French.

I have no French language browser or app user interfaces on my PC. It's English all the way.

BTW My Safari browser on iPhone has English interfaces and it gets sucked into the vortex of Google UI changing to match the IP address.

When I've travelled around Europe and seen folks trying to use Google on their laptops, hotel kiosks or internet cafe computers, I have seen them literally weeping with frustration trying to get it to display in the language they want rather than the language of IP address. (Particularly frustrating when you're on a hotel network hosted in another country with a different language again.) It's very evil to torment users like this.

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 4/13/11 10:25 AM
@Tomoya: The trick of adding French to the end of my language list does change the language shown in Blogger headers to English. It doesn't affect transient server/error messages which are mostly in French.

It's a pretty whacky way of getting English! Is this intentional? I'd love to see the RFC for it.
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 4/13/11 4:03 PM
Thanks Mike for trying the trick for us. We're continuing our effort to make your browsing experience better. Glad to see the temporary work around works for you. In terms of the server error, are you referring to a error messages from Google products? Depends on where it's coming from, sometimes it's out of our control. It'd help if you can elaborate on that. Thanks.

TK
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 4/13/11 11:49 PM
@Tomoya: I'm referring to actual error messages from Google Products, such as the ones that appear in red in the Blogger login box if you fail to enter a CAPTCHA properly. They appear in many other places as well, but they're almost always in the IP language, regardless of browser or platform (e.g. Chrome/FF/IE on Windows, Safari on iOS)

Re: How do I make English my default language Fredatled 4/21/11 6:08 AM
I have found BY FAR THE EASIEST SOLUTION. That is to use the official Google SSL extension for Crome. It is very easy to get going and gives you bonus SSL encryption, so no one can read your searches or worse, like hijack your google logins, as has been discussed in the press. N.B Searches sometimes seem slower over SSL, but safety first!

go here:

https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/lcncmkcnkcdbbanbjakcencbaoegdjlp

Then go to Manage Search Engines and make the SSL search your default.
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 4/21/11 8:02 AM
@Fredatled: I may be missing something, but how is this in any way relevant to the topic?
Re: How do I make English my default language Rob Nugen 4/25/11 8:18 PM
RT @dyllos Come on GOOGLE - the solution is simple. When a user is logged into a Google Account - that account's language setting should prevail (and for ALL google services of that account) - doesn't matter the browser, OS, or anything.
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 4/26/11 12:06 AM
@Rob Nugen: +1

And that also goes for the geographic/timezone settings. If Google Maps or Google Calendar knows that I'm in France, it shouldn't ALWAYS assume that an address is in the USA.
Re: How do I make English my default language qwertui 4/26/11 8:15 AM
Hi, I just wanted to contribute that this method worked for me:
1) on the upper right corner of Google chrome, click on:
wrench > basics > manage search engines > default search options

2) click on the google search engine listed

3) click on the rightmost field to change the google search engine URL

4) replace google default url with

http://www.google.com/search?{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s

I then pressed the Up arrow on my keyboard to save it, because for some reason, pressing Enter wouldn't work.

Hope this helps someone!
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 4/26/11 8:34 AM
@qwertui: That addresses the issue of default search engine, not default browser language.
Re: How do I make English my default language db009 4/29/11 3:03 AM
I'm in the UAE. This is what worked 4 me;

Search 4 something on the address bar,
click on google.com in english
click on search settings on the top right corner,
select display google tips and messages in - English
search language - select English,
save preferences,

DONE :)
Re: How do I make English my default language kublai87 5/19/11 2:50 AM
What you need to do is uninstall the software and download it again and reinstall the software upon installing set it up to english language!
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 5/19/11 3:02 AM
@kublai87: The interface has nothing to do with the language preferences of what is read inside the browser. You do know for instance you don't need a French word processor to read and write French documents.

5. Paste in the URL the one you copied and change  {google:baseURL} to http://www.google.com/
do the above EXACTLY as it says so remove the { and }
6. Click OK and Make Default. Any keywork now you enter in the address bar will now have the english version.

Hope that helps

Re: How do I make English my default language jamdonald 6/1/11 12:52 AM
I would likewise like to change my browser from Thai to English (so my wife can use it). I can read Thai and there is definitely no button that allows me to set my browser to English where it is in the pictures Blair posted. Has the button moved? I can't find it anywhere and I'm at my rope's end.
Edit: Oh, and I already tried reinstalling in English, but to no avail.
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 6/1/11 8:30 AM
@bangss
Would you try this trick?

1. Type "chrome:settings/languages" into the address bar. (This will take you to Language and Input setting).
2. Add Thai to the list, but make sure that English is on top of the list.

Then go back

@jamdonald,

What OS are you using? If you're on Mac of Linux, the browser language setting is controlled by the system language. In order to have Chrome in English, you'll need to change your system's language to English.

Thanks,

Tomoya K.

Are there any plans to stop using IP address location to set language and browser options? I am a sentient being and lnow what I want. I speak only English. Not Japanese, not Arabic, not Tagalog, not Spanish, not Portuguese, not Polish, not Welsh!!!!! ENGLISH ! Sorry for the shout.

I am so frustrated by having to change language settings and still seeing messaging based on the IP location that I am seriously considering removing all Google apps I have installed and go back to Yahoo. Great, great upheaval for me but I really am that frustrated.

MikeW is right, I sometimes scream at Chrome and Google search when I read an English website that has non-English translated frames.

Argh! Just installed Firefox, and yes, Google search is now in Arabic. Yahoo here I come...
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 6/6/11 4:55 PM
@Bilban,

Can you check something for me? Please type "chrome:settings/languages" into the address bar. Under languages, do you see any other languages besides English? If not, can you try this trick: add another language to the list (any language is fine), but make sure English is on top of the list. After this trick, when you visit other Google sites in Chrome, it should show you English. Thanks,

How to change the language of google chrome in MAC?

In MAC Google Chrome will be setted automaticly to your MAC prefered language, to change this nothing you have to do with Google Chrome, all you can do is change your MAC prefered language by:

* On Top right, click on the Language flag.
* Click on "Open Language & Text"
* Tap Languages.
* Drag English to top
* Restart Google chrome and you are done.
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 6/27/11 2:14 PM

You can also use www.google.com/preferences to set your preferred languages. Thanks.

While I understand that it's Google's plan to create two internet's, one for those who want to give Google 100% control and knowledge of their digital lives and a second rate one for those that don't, there should be a way to choose the language of your choice without having to sign in.
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 7/5/11 6:48 PM

Did you try another trick, which is to go to chrome:settings/languages (type that into the address bar), and add Japanese into the list? Make sure English is still on top though.

Of course, can I assume that you have "Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar" in Options > Under the Hood > Privacy section?

@donpreachaman,

When you say Google keeps changing the language, what exactly is being changed.

1. The browser interface?
2. On Google.com properties (such as Gmail/ Docs, etc)?

Can you check a couple things?

Type in "chrome:settings/languages" into the address bar. What are the languages on the list? Please make sure English is on top of the list.

Also, have you tried signing into a Google products, say Gmail? Once you have signed in, what languages does it show?

Thanks,

Help would be much appreciated.

THE BEST WAY For change the language of your google chrome on MAC you should following steps below:

1.system preferences
2.select language and text
3.go to input sources and deselect the language that already on your google chrome
4.back to the language and select edit list so deselect the language that already on your google chrome
5.restar

google chrome version 14
hope this will help... had a hard time changing my bookmark, select a new tab and also when I right click it shows in a different language.

1. click the wrench on upper right side of the screen
2. forth or fifth selection from the bottom
3. when you are on the option screen, select third tab on the left screen (the one that has a word "HOOD")
4. select the one that has spell-checker under the one that has the word "WEB"
5.select the language you want. if your language is not there just click add and select the language you want.
Re: How do I make English my default language bookmarkjedi 8/10/11 9:08 PM
@TomoyaKawasaki Here is one suggestion for Google to consider, one that might be a quick and easy solution:

Place a small "nuke" link or button somewhere on the browser or Settings page that overrides any regional language settings with a single click (and confirm). It might read something like "I'm an English-only user. Change all default language settings to English," or simply "Make English my default language."

I imagine that would make life much less frustrating for a lot of English-only Chrome users living abroad.^^

Anyone who tries to install Chrome in a foreign language country is toast! You don't have to go to China or Arabia, try to google in Russia or Hungary? Or Thailand? It is such a nonsense, this automatic language choice!

Judging from several thousand frustraded people all over the world, check this place, youtube, and forums around the world, not being able to change the fucking language?

Can it be something else than a huge FAIL from your part? I dont think so...

Abbreviate this:
Click the Wrench Icon
4th one from below
in the search bar copy this and paste it there: لغة
the last one bottom
choose english (second one)
Re: How do I make English my default language b2thewalls 9/26/11 10:46 PM
I click the wrench
4th from below
in the search bar I paste this :  ขั้นสูง
as I am in Thailand, and I think that might be the correct word
I then click "อังกฤษ" as I can read well enough to understand that means English
then click the cross, that means close the window, then close the browser, and reopen, and voila!!

It´s thai language AGAIN!
Re: How do I make English my default language b2thewalls 9/26/11 10:52 PM

Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 9/27/11 8:30 AM
Hi b2thewalls,

Is your Mac system in English? What Mac OS version are you on?

The language of Chrome on a Mac is determined by the system language and can't be set at an application level.

If you switch your Mac system to English, Chrome will be English as well.

Thanks,

Re: How do I make English my default language bookmarkjedi 9/28/11 12:11 AM
Hi Tomoya,

I am running the latest version of Chrome on Windows 7. I managed to set everything up so that when I type "google.com" in my browser it opens up to google.com rather than google.co.kr (I live in Korea).

I am happy with that result, but when I type the word I am searching directly into the URL locator, the search results show up in google.co.kr rather than in google.com. How can I fix this?

In Chrome Options, my default search options is set to "google.com/ncr." "google,co.kr" does not appear anywhere in my Options, yet Chrome annoyingly shows the search results in .co.kr when I use the URL locator, and the only way I can keep this from happening is to take the extra step of going to google.com first, then typing into the window.

Please let me know what I need to do.
Re: How do I make English my default language bookmarkjedi 9/28/11 12:17 AM
Hi Tomoya,

One more question:

It is clear from the previous comments made by b2thewalls that he, along with many others, are clearly frustrated by something that should be very simple to fix.

For instance, all that would be needed is a menu in Options asking the following:

1. What is your preferred language?
2. What country would you prefer your search results to be in?

END OF PROBLEM

Is Google working on such a fix, or can users expect this unnecessary frustration to continue into the foreseeable future?
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 9/28/11 8:53 AM
@ b2thewalls,

Have you tried reinstalling and download a new fresh installer?

When you visit www.google.com/chrome, on the top right hand corner, there's a drop down menu for you to choose what language to download.

One more thing to check, on your language list in Mac, do you have English as the first language on the list?

@bookmarkjedi,

To set your default to NCR, follow the steps below:

1. Click the wrench icon.
2. Select Options.
3. In Basics, click "Manage search engines".

Enter the following:

Name      : Google
Keyword : google.com
URL        : http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=%s

Make this the default search engine. Then your searches in the URL bar won't get redirected.

We're working on making the download process a little bit more clear cut, so you get it right from the get-go. For b2thewalls case, it's very interesting. Mac system always governs the Chrome interface language.

I changed the order of the languages in the language list, and YES, finally it worked!!

Thanks you very much!
Re: How do I make English my default language bookmarkjedi 9/29/11 4:27 AM
Hi Tomoya,

In Options > Manage Search Engines, I cannot set the Name, Keyword, and URL. I can enter everything in the "Add a new search engine," "Keyword," and "URL," but there is no OK button and when I hit enter or do anything else, everything I typed just disappears and nothing happens.

I am so glad to hear that you are working on making the process simpler. It will put an end to so much unnecessary frustration by users in other countries who only want the English version.
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 9/29/11 9:00 AM
Hi bookmarkjedi,

Put the name in "Add a new search engine" field, and the rest. When you're done with URL, just click somewhere else and the search engine will be saved. Then hover over the newly added search engine again and a button "Make Default" should show up. When you click it, you'll set the address bar searches to that search engine.

Hi b2thewalls,

Glad to see it worked out!

Thanks,

WHY would Google make this so hard to do?

There are 4,000,000 American citizens living in foreign countries. And every other country has expats too. WHY would Google make setting the language to English hard?

I have spent more than an hour trying to change my Chrome's default language to English. What fun! It still comes up as Google.fr every time.

Until you make this SIMPLE to do, I am going to be using Firefox and Safari.
Re: How do I make English my default language Wu Ming 10/2/11 9:19 AM
By the way, your answers are not working for me. I downloaded Chrome in the USA but Google apparently wants me to use only French. Vous l'aimeriez comme ça? Moi non plus.

FIX THIS PLEASE.

Open your Browser Program location
find google.xml
open in notepad
find hl=*****
change hl=**** to hl=en

nb **** = locale in firefox thats make your google go locals
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 10/3/11 2:10 PM
@Wu Ming,

Are you referring to your Chrome browser interface language? Chrome search from the address bar? Or when you visit Google.com?

What wasn't working for you? If you can list them here, that'd be great. Thanks.

Re: How do I make English my default language Wu Ming 10/7/11 2:31 PM
@Tomoya. All three.

When I go to Home, which is set to google.com, I get google.fr.

When I type google.com in the address bar, I get google.fr

When I visit google.com, I get google.fr

C'est agaçant et je ne vais plus me plaindre, je supprime Chrome jusqu'à ce qu'ils get their act together.
Re: How do I make English my default language monik.popovic 10/8/11 2:29 AM
You know what, it's really agacant, as Wu Ming says. I managed to set the language thanks to Blair's instructions, then went to Greece and up and away went my "default address" or whatever it is called. I successfully ignored Greek browsing till returning to Serbia, where I was welcomed (by GChr) in cyrillic again. So, whatever you do, if you cross any border you're back to "user friendly" browsing language settings. I just want to tell Google people THAT THIS IS NOT USER FRIENDLY, OR HELPFUL IN ANY WAY!
This time I read more of this forum and found a very helpful hint (I hope) with "ncr" as "no country redirect". Wonder what will happen to THAT next time I pass a border. Since GChr obviously disregards most of users wishes. I still didn't uninstall cause it is by far the fastest browser I had. But I wonder...

Cher Tomoya,

Over to you.

Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 10/10/11 2:47 PM
@ Wu Ming,

Are you physically in France? If so, by having a French IP, when you visit Google.com, you'll always be redirected to google.fr. This is to give you the most relevant search results. However, if you'd like to change that, you can. To do so, you can always use google.com/ncr as monik.popovic mentioned. You can set your home page to google.com/ncr, so wherever you go, when you go to home, it'll give you Google.com.

When you type or visit Google.com, it'll always redirect you to the local Google Search Engine. However, if you type google.com/ncr, you'll always end up in English.

@monik.popovic,

You can set the search preference to English (go to Google.com, click the gear icon on the top right corner, select "Preference" to set your language selections). Please note though, the search engine will still use the local search result. As you mentioned, google.com/ncr will always keep you being redirected based on where you are.

Thanks,

Re: How do I make English my default language Igor Galochkin 11/3/11 2:10 AM
If any Google employee is reading this, pls inform you Chrome development team that we are frustrated with this idiotic feature of automatic language setting depending on current location.
I am currently in Germany but I am not a native speaker and do NOT want to see any German in my search results, never. This slows down my work. It's a chore to keep setting stuff back to English in all places!
At least make an option "Set language based on location" or something like that. It's so frustrating you can't imagine.
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 11/3/11 3:36 PM
Hi Igor Galochkin,

Are you searching on Google.com or in the address bar?
Re: How do I make English my default language RichKorea 11/5/11 7:25 AM
Hi Tomoya,
I experienced the same problems that BookMarkJedi was having, and from reading the previous postings, I don't think you were able to solve his problem. Fortunately, after trying your 9/29/11 recommendation with no success, I found Blair the Bear's 12/22/10 suggestion of using the letter "a" for the search engine name and as the keyword, along with the same URL you suggested, and it worked!

For your reference:
I work in Korea, so my IP address is from Korea, but I want Google in English as my default search engine from the address bar.
I have a new HPg4 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium installed.

I downloaded and installed Chrome 15.0.874.106 m, but after experiencing the language problem, I uninistalled it and downloaded a second copy to make sure I had selected the English language. The second installation made no difference.

I tried your 9/29 & 9/30/11 recommendations to BookMarkJedi, but I was unable to get the Name/Keyword/URL to be accepted. I tried hitting the tab and enter keys after entering the URL, and I tried clicking in the Other Search Engine box, in the Default Search Engine box, and outside of the boxes, all with the same result. As soon as I click, the information I entered disappears. No new search engine option is added.

To confirm that I can add other search engines, I added Bing with the URL http://www.bing.com/search?q=%s&go=&form=QBLH&filt=al. After entering the URL, I hit Enter and Chrome accepted the URL.

I then tried some other options to create a new Google search option, but no matter what I entered (I even tried entering the URL from the default Google URL), Chrome would not accept anything.

I tried Mikkagetsugo's and's antfox's suggestions, but neither worked.

I then tried Blair the Bear's 12/22/10 suggestion of using the letter "a" for the search engine name and as the keyword, along with the same URL you suggested, and it worked!
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 11/7/11 2:10 PM
Hi rdebourke,

Thanks for the note. It seems like using "google.com" as a keyword is the problem.

Hope everything is working for you now.

Success Finally.

Every time i opened my browser everything was in the local language. "file" "edit" "view" "histroy". I mean everything. It was annoying. I uninastalled it, went back and downloaded one more with language set as "English" but still in Vain. Then i just used "monolingual" on my mac and deleted all other languages but english. Finally everything is in English.
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 11/11/11 8:40 AM
@ grrrr....

When you say everything comes up in Chinese, do you mean the webpages? Or the browser interface?

@siddarthvadi,

You can still keep other languages in your language list in Mac. To keep everything in English, just make sure English is on top of the list.

I just discovered that Google changes the links in its help text in topics like calendar sync ( http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=139206 ) depending on your chosen interface language. However if you don't set everything to English(US) and use .com links then the answer will never work. This is true even for English(GB)/.co.uk combination.
Re: How do I make English my default language covran 12/3/11 12:59 AM
I find this unbelievable! As an Englishman living in Spain I want English as the default language. After opening Chrome and finding everything in Spanish I opened the language tab and scrolled down to find 'English' greyed out and not available. So I come on the Forum expecting an easy solution and read pages of comments by people with the same problem. The solution? Cut and paste this - highlight that - go to system preferences etc etc!!!!

setandgul says:
I was having same problem. the thing is when you're trying to download chrome you must've ignored the language option when you're about to download. so the best way is to uninstall chrome, then try to download it again but this time around pay attention to the language option, that's it.

I don't remember seeing this but 'll try this and if it don´t work it's goodbye and never return from me.

Why is everything so bl***y difficult?
Re: How do I make English my default language a2z1to0 12/5/11 10:29 AM
To all those who hadn't the luck to change search language to english, this is what i did: (mine was arabic). search something in the address bar, then a search page with results in the default language(other than english) will come. Click the gear icon on the top corner of the page(right or left corner depends on the language). then click the first option in it. then you will get a screen with language options. Select english along with your default language(check boxes) and also select English from the drop down menu. English will be written in your default language. This should do it...
Re: How do I make English my default language vanpapa 12/23/11 1:03 AM
I solved the problem, but I'm not sure if it works for everyone.
try this procedure

1. go to option
2. click the Under the hood
3. click on the "Languages and spell-checker settings" button of the Web content section
4. delete your native language
5. select English and click on the "use this language for spell checking" button and "x" to close the current page
5. then open new tab to see if English setting shows up and you're done
Re: How do I make English my default language ItsMeexD 12/28/11 4:43 AM

I can't set default chrome search options to English, despite 30 mins trying. Very frustrating and bizarre to have such an issue. Had to switch to Yahoo despite having so many google products.
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 1/9/12 2:28 PM
Hi hsaunders10,

Are you in a non-EN country?

Have you tried the following:

1. Click the wrench icon.
2. Select Options.
3. In Basics, click "Manage search engines".

Enter the following:

Name      : Google
Keyword : google.com
URL        : http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=%s

Make this the default search engine. Then your searches in the URL bar won't get redirected.

Thanks

Go to System Prefs, and make sure English is your top language choice! Then quit and relaunch chrome.

I tried for hours to change the language from within Chrome, but this is the only thing that worked.

I made a slideshow (18 slides) starting with Thai language menus showing three things:

1. Change language of Google Chrome application version 13.0.782.218 on Windows Vista Home Premium from Thai to English
2. Change www.google.co.th from Thai to English
3. Change Google's webpage menus from Thai to English

chrome in any language changes to the language of the country you are in.. so if your english in china russia thailand or tim, buktu you are screwed because we been complaining about this since google search did it with the home page too, and i am lucky, i can read thai but i tink of all the other people who cant, and how dumb google is making the 'auto select' crap as default as a machine willnever be able to select what each individual wants.. precisely because they are individuals, not machines. Every persons case is different, so google should stop assuming we are all homepride flour men in same suit and bowler hat, and realize that there are russians in china chinese in UK and English in Thailand, and to select the language automatically is simply more bothersome than it is a help. Why doesnt google just have one page with 150 tiny flag icons or something instead fo sending brits to thai language pages and thais to russian pages.. they arent going to do anyting abut it because they want to dictate and not let the consumer dictate what he wants

it will never work.. at least paypals thai page offers you the choice of english or thai when you are in Thailand, google havent thought of that simple idea yet

I cant even find "English" in the list.  I have "Ingles - English"  this would seem like the correct choice except when listed on top it doesnt fix a thing.  everything still in Spanish.

what is going on here?  btw put a save settings button on this page.  very unsettling to drag a choice and simply just close everything.
Re: How do I make English my default language petey9897883 2/8/12 9:58 AM
I must have a slightly different problem.  no matter what language i put on the top of the list Chrome remains in Spanish.  Just Chrome display, not Google.

How can i fix this, and please no click on this string and that one, i cannot understand the language displayed, keep it to landmark icons or 4th from the top etc. also keep in mind i have the latest version of Chrome.
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 2/8/12 3:59 PM
Hi petey9897883,

Assuming you're on Windows.

Putting English on top is step one.

Step 2, select "Ingles - English"

Step 3, click "mostrar Google Chrome en este idioma" to show Google Chrome in English.

Step 4, exit and restart Chrome.

This time, you should have Google Chrome displayed in English.
Re: How do I make English my default language mollila 2/17/12 4:54 AM
Thank you Tomoya Kawasaki, that solution to add a new search engine with that URL helps.

But like has been complained for long in this thread, WHY is this made so difficult? I was incredibly frustrated with getting my searches always switched to a Chinese (local) Google, even though I had installed the English version, had my Google Account Search Settings -Languages set for English in Google products and English only for search results, clicked to use Google.com at bottom of search page, and also tried changing the Options default search engine Google keyword from google.xxx to google.com.

None of these help, and search results keep switching to local language.

Please make it more simple to use the language a user wants, without having to come to read help forums to find a cryptic URL to paste in settings boxes without explanations that a non-developer could understand. If your Google Account has a setting to use for example English for search results, then respect that feature.
Re: How do I make English my default language Tomoya Kawasaki 2/23/12 1:36 PM
Hi mollila,

Couple things that might help:

Assuming you're on Windows again:

1. Type Chrome:settings/languages into the address bar. Do you have Chinese listed on top or English?

If you don't have Chinese, try add it in and make sure English is the first language on the list.

2. When you're on Google.com, are you signed in? You can check this by looking at the top right corner and see if your Google Account is listed there. Type in www.google.com/preferences, and on the left, there's language section. You can edit your language setting there. Moving forward, once you're signed into any Google products, and you go to Google.com, it should display in the language of your preferences.

I have stopped using Chrome. Whatever I do it starts up in a language I don't understand in the country I happen to be in. It is EXTREMELY frustrating. I've had enough. I'll come back once in a while to check if Google has fixed this problem. But, until then, I'll be using I.E.
Re: How do I make English my default language Onion Zwiebel 3/6/12 7:02 AM
Tomoya, I'm having the same problem. Your step 1 and step 2 are set up here, but everytime I go to my Chrome homepage and do a search, the search results have text in another language (on the left side), and my browser is at https://www.google.de

At the bottom of the page is a link "Google.com in English". When I click that, it directs me to https://www.google.com. That is only temporary, because on the next search, my browser again directs to https://www.google.de and everything on the left is in German.

I've been around and around in all the menus in Chrome and Gmail, and have not found a way to keep the search results in my language (English) at https://www.google.com. I am logged into my Google account.

Also, there's no "report this" button in chrome://settings/searchEngines. So how can I report the problem I'm having?

In that screen, I've tried to change the Google (Default) to google.com. I'm not able to type anything into the 3rd field where it says {google:baseURL}search?{google:...

I'm not able to add a new search engine.

HELP! This is maddening!
Re: How do I make English my default language Onion Zwiebel 3/6/12 7:18 AM
I think I may have stumbled upon the answer!

Go to your Chrome home page and type anything into the URL field, such as 'help'

Right click in the search bar, after the search term you just typed. A box will open.
Click "Add as search engine"

Fill in the 3 boxes:

google.com
google
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=%s

Click OK (hopefully that OK button is not grayed out).

Go to: chrome://settings/searchEngines
Find the search engine you just added - it should be in the "Other search engines" section.
Hover over it (or select it), and you'll see a blue box with the words "Make default". Click the blue box.

That should do it.
Re: How do I make English my default language bill8goog 4/6/12 12:22 AM
Dont know if it has been stated. this is a cross browser solution that gets rid of the search localization based on location detection.
Change your default home page or default google page to:
http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en

That will always take you to the main google page and get rid of the majority of the inappropriate language translations also.

When I right clicked and went to edit search engines, GOOGLE.COM was already one of the choices and just GOOGLE.SE was set as default.   When I clicked on the google.com it automatically highlighted and there was a thing on the right that said "make default" so I clicked enter AND IT WAS DONE.  It shows that as the DEFAULT but baby it DOESN'T MATTER - as soon as I enter google.com it automatically switches it to SWEDEN.

THE ONLY REASON I CARE is that all the buttons like "image, search, "i'm lucky" read bilder, sök, & jag har tur
And when you press a button, all the instructions are in swedish, like when I want to do an ADVANCED SEARCH + ALL the information is in Swedish.

ALSO, since my GOOGLE TRANSLATE PAGES is NO LONGER ASKING ME if I want the page translated I can't even translate it and read the directions (and don't tell me about that 'google translate button'  I HAVE IT and it only works 1-2 the time.

My computer used to automatically translate swedish as well, and now it no longer DOES THAT.

WHAT IS JUST WRONG WITH GOOGLE IN GENERAL.  AND IT'S NOT JUST ME.
I did a search and EVERYBODY is having translate problems.
and "this site has insecure content" and the only time I get THAT message is when I am doing A SEARCH ON GOOGLE.SE and I'm not even IN a website.

I'm really frustrated, all the things that made google the best aren't working anymore.

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 8/4/12 4:53 AM
Unfortunately Google is even ignoring that quite frequently.

Also if I click a link from one Google service to another, the language setting doesn't propagate. If I don't hand-craft every Google URL or start with a predefined link that has the URL with a language parameter, then the IP address takes precedence. I now have the ridiculous situation where Google is pushing me French services, then popping up Google Translate to translate it back to English. It's even trying to translate English text as though it were French and giving me complete garbage. Likewise French search results, French wikipedia articles are promoted over English.

If I click the RSS feed button in my Chrome search box, then it launches Reader in the wrong language.

It's also broken on Chrome for iOS.

You are not the only person with this issue...
I have the same problem and my frustration level is high...

Many international users are been affected with the last update Google made some weeks ago and "we" are not priority to then to fix this or simple care...

Most of the Google servers, simple ignore your language preferences from your account or from your Browser. They believe you are going to be happy if they force you to see what they think is good for you based on your IP.

Re: How do I make English my default language monchy12 9/2/12 5:32 AM
Hi all,
after trying and searching for many hours, I found a simple answer to change the google browser to english no matter which country you're in:

1.type in your browser www.google.com/ncr (no country required)
2. click on "tools" top LHS
3. follow drop-down list and click on "internet options"
4. under the heading home page change the address to http://google.com/ncr
and save as default.

It worked for me!!

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 9/2/12 5:42 AM
/ncr option only changes the first (search) link you browse. It doesn't help with subsequent links you click in the browser. Every subsequent page I get is switched to French

Nor does it help with issues like clicking the RSS icon in the Chrome omnibox and having it launch the wrong language version of Reader.

It also doesn't help with any of the links in the black Google menu at the top of the screen.

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 9/2/12 5:59 AM
You should see a dialog box, with a blue box inside it. That blue box has the list of languages of choice. At the bottom of the blue box is an [Add] button which pops up a smaller dialog with a language selection dialog. With any luck you'll find something recognisably English in that.

Make sure when you make that selection that it's the topmost in the dialog box - you can drag and drop these to re-order.

If you select any of the items in the blue box, then some text appears beside in the non-blue part of the box. If you click the button that comes with that text then it makes that language your default spell-checking language.

Click the [OK] button at the very bottom of the main dialog when you're done.

Add languages and drag to order them based on your preference.

Languages

  • English (United Kingdom)
  • English (Australia)
  • English (United States)

Google Chrome cannot be displayed in this language
Use this language for spell checking

You may also want to add the term hl=en& in the URL, like this:

    https://www.google.com/?hl=en&q=gfdsgdfg&sugexp=chrome,mod=19&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 9/24/12 2:12 AM
That's what I was doing (and noted in my Aug 4 post) but it doesn't help with any subsequent links generated by Google or Chrome. Also, not all Google URLs accept the hl parameter.

The best that any of these work-arounds can do is change the first link you type or save as a bookmark. The rest is a disgrace.
Re: How do I make English my default language Jeandre Gerber 9/24/12 10:40 AM
There's a difference between changing the "Search Engine" settings.

    To do this:

    1. Go to Google.com (it will send you to the language you don't want)
    2. Search something (whatever)
    3. In the SERP on the right hand side it gives you the option to "show personal results" or "hide personal results" and next to that is a "Gear"
    4. Click the Gear and select "Search Settings"
    5. Select "Language" settings
    6. Select English (or whatever language you want)
    7. Deselect the rest
    8. Save

Try it like that. If you did the entire editing of the search bar by replacing the URL you might have troubles searching by typing into the search bar. If that's the case...uninstall and re-install then follow the instructions above.

Worked for me and was far less complicated than what was said above...

Re: How do I make English my default language Black_Ram_Software_Engineer 9/27/12 6:08 AM
In the address bar at the top of your browser, type this:

    https://www.google.com/?hl=EN

    It will work every time.

In the unlikely event you have a problem, check your settings. If there is ANYTHING that says "Do not allow browser to subsitute" or "Allow alternative search results" or anything that might cause a subsitution for what you put in as the URL, disable that feature.  I doubt you will have to do this.  But make sure after you type in the URL and hit go (or press return), the address you typed in is the one that still shows when the google page comes up.

I have been a microsystems software engineer since 1983, which predates Google.  I remember when Microsoft was a non-entity and CPM was considered a better operating system than DOS.  For the second time since I have moved to Finland (ten years ago), Google has reset my page from English to Finnish.  Nothing makes me madder.  Nothing.  I spent couple hours hacking away until I figured out that this address never fails.  I use Internet Explorer as my browser, but it should work no matter what you're using.

Google is really stupid making their client base angry.  I don't have to use Google and neither do you. Yahoo search and Firefox are both excellent.  I can't stand Bing.

For Google to assume that just because your IP address points to a certain country that you want to use that language is illogical.  Google's marketing director and Technology Director should be fired.  *

It USED TO BE that when the Finnish Google showed up, I could click on "Go to GOOGLE.COM in English".  But now, that option has been replaced with something else and when I click on it, the language doesn't go to English.

Google is very rapidly reaching the top of my sh*t list.  I remember back in the days when we would argue if Infoseek or AltaVista were the superior product.  For awhile, I used Lycos.  Then came Google and I have used it for years.  But my Google days could be rapidly coming to a permanent halt.

Good luck with my suggestion.  I hope it works for you.  If it does not, you can email me at black_r...@yahoo.com

Actually My problem was slightly different..I had accidentally changed the language in the chromium browser to kannada and wanted to revert back to english.
My OS is Ubuntu Linux 12.04

I found a quick and dirty solution..

    go to "/usr/lib/chromium-browser/locales"

with admin privileges(can be done in GUI by "sudo nautilus" or cd to that location in the terminal)

and manually delete the .pak file of the language you want to get rid of..I dont know what to do if you want to go back to that later language later..

Type this in the address bar:

    https://www.google.com/?hl=EN

It works on every computer I have tried - even the ones where the system administrator overrides the English language (such as in our Finnish language class).

Google used to have a toggle button that said "Google.com in English", but it was removed from their webpages when Google Chrome was released.

There is still no solution. All the posts that propose one are either suggesting a solution to a different problem, or simply don't understand the issue.

English is theoretically my default language, even my Google settings say so, but Google/Chrome doesn't honour the setting.

are you complaining that chrome is not displaying its menus in english or that when you browse a website its not in english ?
or that searching in the URL box does not return english results?
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 1/30/13 3:37 AM
The websites are not in English. This is because Google overrides all user/device/browser preferences with the language based on the Geo-IP.

The same problem affects mobile Chrome/Google apps on iOS and elsewhere.
Re: How do I make English my default language Zachariah Hargis 1/31/13 7:19 PM
Mike is right. Many have discovered that the "Geo-IP" updated itself during their travel out of their native language area only to discover it is impossible to adjust the new default once they stop traveling. Or, if you are an expat, perhaps you will forever be updated to a new default which is not your native tongue. I don't think Google has any incentive to change this even with user outcry since the location-based system is attempting to accommodate browser experience, and this, unfortunately, makes a lot of sense. This problem has been around long enough to be fixed and it's not like Google employees don't read about it here and elsewhere and have known for a long time. Their reluctance to have your personal settings override the automated, location-based ones must have some real significance. I've pretty much given up on it. Or perhaps they are unable to for other reasons or just really really inept.

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 3/4/13 2:36 AM
This does not address the issue of effectively changing the default treatment of pages using Google. Your search engine link has been posted several times before on this thread and all the shortcomings pointed out, especially that it only changes ONE link at best and has no effect on subsequent pages opened via the Google search results page. There are also many Google account URLS which do not incorporate the HL=EN syntax which would even allow to manually fix omnibox issues.

    Hello,

Sorry for my stupidity, but could you point out where exactly this solution fails?

I make a search using the settings I provided, English results are displayed, My tool bar on the top is in English, I browse the results pages and they keep in English.

I'm sincerely curious where are the flaws.

    Thanks in advance,

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 3/4/13 3:24 PM
I use hardcoded HL=EN and /ncr settings for all google-owned links and search engine specs but once I follow a link from any of those pages, they immediately revert to French. I see the same behaviour on all the machines of my neighbours (who variously prefer to use English or Dutch as their primary language).

From within France where I've lived for 3 years, but with no French language settings on any of my devices (Windows PCs and iPhone) I get French language Google Maps, all my Google account UI including management of 2-step verifications ( https://accounts.google.com/IssuedAuthSubTokens ) and other security issues in French. All Chrome account settings appear in French, password screens, Blogger connection screens,

If I'm in another country then they all change to match the local language.

Just follow this link. It'll take you to some Google preferences, On your left, click on the "LANGUAGE" link. You'll be directed to a new page in which you'll be able to chance your default language. Set both options (top & bottom) as the desired language, and click on the SAVE button down below he page.

    http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=es-US

Re: How do I make English my default language Joshua Luzuriaga 4/26/13 10:32 AM
I know it's extremely frustrating, but bear with me people. I've had this issue going on for about a month without being able to fix it. Many of the help people post are extremely unreliable.

ANYWAYS, just follow the link below.
    http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=es-US#languages

This should take you to some Google configuration settings. If not on the language section already, just click on the LANGUAGE tab to your LEFT HAND OF THE PAGE. You should end up in a Language settings area. You can find your prefered language up top of the page, or you can click on a language box on the lower section of the page. MAKE SURE YOU PUT BOTH ON THE PREFERRED LANGUAGE. Then click the save button below. Now- Open up a new tab and go to Google.com just to make sure Google is back to it's original language.

This solution worked for me and it might work for you, try them out and if any questions please look me up. Good Luck!

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeO4BO 4/27/13 3:31 PM
    Joshua,

I am sure you mean well, but that isn't the problem.  The problem is that when you navigate, you get a translated page, even google preferences page, in some other language supposedly for the location you are in.  THAT doesn't change with the google preferences you linked to...BTW if you look at this thread back YEARS you will see your SOLUTION is not the solution to the problem at hand.  I have English set in preferences but still get random foreign language translations.  I have found Torch is better but not immune.

The point of this thread, which has been restated many times is that even with (for example) English set everywhere in these settings, Google still uses the IP language of the locality to set pages. It completely ignores these configuration settings and those of the browser's accept language.

For what it's worth it also ignores the information on your location, time zone etc and has done so for years.
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeO4BO 6/7/13 5:47 PM
Mike W, you either cannot read or didn't bother...this thread is NOT about google configuration settings with regard to google pages!!!  It is about location being used (badly BTW) to automatically translate a page if google thinks it should.

When traveling, the people on this thread have reported "for years" that google chrome translates not only google pages but other pages on the internet and ignores the settings of preferred language.

It doesn't even do a good job of that as I have seen finnish when in the philippines and arabic when in India and French when in Hong Kong.

Torch does a better job and is now my default browser...Chrome sucks because of this and your response is probably indicative of the arrogance of Google thinking they know best and not listening to the community.

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 6/7/13 6:52 PM
If you pay attention to what's going on and the title of the thread "How do I make English my default language"  - it has nothing to do with translation in the first instance.

Where you have pages from Google that have no language parameter in the URL  then Google is not translating on the fly but loading the pre-translated pages for the locale.

The  translation of pages is a secondary issue - if you have it enabled, it pops up because Google overrides the language configuration settings based on IP so for example if your  default language is English and your location is France then Google will display the French locale page and then pop up and try to translate that back to English because it has looked at your language translation settings but not your default configuration settings.

"When traveling, the people on this thread have reported "for years" that google chrome translates not only google pages but other pages on the internet and ignores the settings of preferred language."
I believe your comment supports what I have written. You must be careful to distinguish between Google loading their own local pages and the secondary issue of Google Translate working inside Chrome.

"It doesn't even do a good job of that as I have seen finnish when in the philippines and arabic when in India and French when in Hong Kong."
Yes, I've seen similar, often because the computer network is hosted or sources a VPN in another country.

    Chill out and pay attention,

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeOliverAZ 6/8/13 12:30 AM
It may be secondary to you, but do as you say not as you do. The vast majority of the posts are regarding the secondary issue but real and very frustrating that the location"service" sucks and ignores the language setting so when traveling it renders chrome useless. You yourself admitted as much. If you travelled as much as some including me do, you would understand.

Let us turn off the location service and a lot of people will be happy. I don't use chrome any more but I monitor this list on the chance someone will say the location service is now optional.

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 6/8/13 1:28 AM
I wish you could decide which side of the argument you're on. You're now saying it's all about location/configuration and not about translation. If you spent a few minutes trying to understand the technical issues involved you'd understand primary vs secondary. If people on this thread are misunderstanding what the topic is that's their problem not mine.

I have lived on three continents and travelled through over three dozen countries in the last few years, and have notified Google of the issue with location services many times over the last eight years. That it overrides user configuration settings AND the browser accept-language settings is the heart of the problem. It also does this on other platforms where Chrome is not involved e.g. iOS.

Last month I buttonholed a Google engineer at a public forum about it. Even he said it was dumb. Whether it will get fixed or not is another matter. Google is not renowned for sticking to products and services or cleaning up messes.

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeO4BO 6/8/13 1:49 AM
    Mike W.

Geez, arrogance and well _____ fill in the blank.  Listen, I wrote my first program on punched paper tape in 1970.  I hold a Software Patent. I have been CTO of both public and private corporations, I have published a book on CS4 with ActionScript, I understand the technical better than you I wager.

While some have posted on this thread because of the Google Settings for Google pages, if you will bother to go back and read, you will find many follow up by saying, "that didn't help" when given the exact "help" you gave, because my dear colleague they are not complaining about the google preferences on google pages, but the automatic translation of the pages they visit, often wrong, but certainly ignoring the language preference.  I haven't changed my point of view.  it is and has always been about the location ignoring the language preference, and yes Google couldn't care less, they think its cool and that's enough for them, the rest of us must be idiots if we don't see it that way.

It is a shame the subject of this thread leads one to believe its only about the google settings, but you weren't the first and won't be the last most likely to think to themselves, boy that's easy, just...as you said.

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 6/8/13 3:12 AM
Trying to argue from authority doesn't get you anywhere, especially as your experiences with punchtape or your single patent  have given you absolutely no insight as to what is going on. If you're going to keep stating things about your professional past to make a point then you are going to keep losing in those stakes. As soon as you start appealing to those things instead of demonstrating sound technical knowledge of this issue then you've lost the argument.

Translation of pages is a separate issue to location ignoring language preference. You clearly cannot separate the issue of Google loading localised pages for their own services, and a browser tool doing page translations on the fly.

The only "help" I have suggested is to make direct representations to Google because their products are broken. I have not told people to change settings or anything else, because that will not work.

You, on the other hand have been of no help at all. All you've done is made attacks on me and demonstrated your own technical inadequacies.

Try using this link to update your Chrome browser's language settings: http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=en-US#languages

You should be able configure your preferred language for Google products as well as your preference for search results. (Don't forget to press "Save"!)

Please report back if you're continuing to experience issues with Chrome or Google products being in another language.

Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 6/21/13 5:57 PM
It's trivial to set Chrome's browser settings and to set Google preferences, but Google doesn't pay any attention to them. It overrides these using the language corresponding to the IP address, so if you're travelling overseas it puts things in a foreign language.

Re: How do I make English my default language kim yip 7/8/13 7:56 PM
    had same problem!
    1. go to upper right corner, click on button w/ three lines. it will open a menu.
    2. on the menu, click "settings" (should be 4th link from bottom)
    3. on settings page, scroll to end, click on "show advanced settings"
    4. somewhere there is a "languages" section. click on "language and input settings" button. it will open a pop-up window.
    5. one of the choices should be "english". click on that. on the right side, click "display chrome in this language"

    hope this helps!

Me too, I have a condo in Mexico.  I visited there with my PC.  Everything I open in Google has Spanish headers etc. since that time.  A friend has been trying to send me Google spreadsheets and I cannot respond as all the menus are in Spanish.  I have a Ph.D. and I cannot figure out how to change the default back to English even after being back in the U.S. for six months !!!  What the heck is going on ?  Why one earth change the default language on a laptop and make it impossible to switch back.  There should be a big button somewhere saying "I speak English".

You can adjust the language used for your screens and menus, spell-check, and for viewing webpages.

    1. If you haven’t already, sign in to your Chromebook.
    2. Click the status area in the lower-right corner, where your account picture appears.
    3. Select Settings.
    4. Click "Show advanced settings" at the bottom of the page.
    5. In the “Language” section, click Customize languages and input.

    Hi Melody,

I live in Thailand and every time I go to Google.com I get Google.co.th, although thankfully it is still in English (most of the time)

I am now in Macau for 3 weeks and every time I go to Google.com I get redirected to https://www.google.com/?hl=zh-TW

The link at the bottom of the Google page that says Google.com in English does not work.

If I change the url to =en instead of =zh-TW then I do get English, but I don't want to have to do that every time.

I tried the link you posted and my Language setting is only English.   Clicked Save and I was immediately take back to Google.com in Chinese.

Now I realise most of the people in a country are probably wanting it in their native language, and as a percentage people like myself who travel about are in a minority.   But surely Google can tell that I've asked to only be shown English language on ALL the google products I use.

I am sick and tired of websites (not just Google) using geolocation to see where someone is and then display sites in that langauge.

How do I once and for all configure Chrome or my Google Account to NEVER show me anything except Google.com  in English.   Irrespective of what country I'm in.  If I'm logged into my Google Account then I should see EVERYTHING in English.

Unfortunately while Google i obsessed with geolocation overriding your Google account settings and browser accept language, there is no way to do this. You may notice that Google does this on iOS as well, and there are plenty of Google URLs with no place to put an =en where you are stuck with the dominant language.

I can't make my default language English because I cannot read the Thai instructions.
Re: How do I make English my default language MikeWWW 7/29/13 1:14 AM
It doesn't matter because Google ignores the default language setting.

It's trivial to set it, trivial to set an initial link to an English language page, but thereafter Google ignores the language settings and just uses what the IP address says.
Re: How do I make English my default language so_magical 7/29/13 10:08 AM
I clicked the link you gave, and both options and the tick mark is English, but when I click on the top right, beside the hand (pop-up blocker), it's still in Chinese. This is getting extremely frustrating.
Re: How do I make English my default language BatoT 7/30/13 9:32 AM
Click Sign in in the top righthand corner of the search results page to sign in to your Google Account.
Click the  gear icon in the top right corner of the search results page and select Search Settings. (You can also visit the page directly at google.com/preferences.)
    Customize your search settings.
    Click Save.
Re: How do I make English my default language so_magical 7/30/13 11:53 AM
I did. Everything says my language should be in English, but it's not. When I'm on Google Chrome and right click a link, it's in Chinese too.

There is no solution or workaround, short of Google fixing the problem.

The dozens of idiots who come on here regularly and tell people to use the settings to change the language completely miss the point.

That doesn't quite do the trick for living abroad.  Living in Taiwan, everything is in Chinese by default; it's incredibly irritating.  My only solution thus far has been to use this link:

    https://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en&tab=Xw

If anyone knows how to make the browser NOT adjust to the language based on the country, PLEASE do let me know; it's incredibly frustrating.

Re: How do I make English my default language boyce postma 10/11/13 4:26 AM
OMG! These posts go back years and this issue is STILL NOT RESOLVED. In Japan and none of the suggestions work. If I select English as my default language, wouldn't it make sense for Google to go to a default english search page... instead of the Japan one? Seriously so frustrating. When I open a new tab, I now have to click on the address bar to do anything - in the US, it automatically started there, waiting for my query. Now it is filled with junk and I am always directed to the JP Google page.

I have set www.google.com as the search engine to use when I press any word in the omnibox but I keep getting redirected to www.google.com.np which does not understand English and tells me that the webpage is not available.

My homepage has also changed from google.com to google.com.np starting from today. I have no idea what is happening. The only thing I have been able to do is change the home button to show www.google.com/intl/en . This is how I have to search from google everytime. Can anyone please tell me how to make this right?

P.S. I've tried all the previous suggestions but nothing seems to be working for me except the intl/en thing.

Hi everyone - to follow up, if you're seeing Google products such as Google Search in the wrong language, please go here to update your language settings: https://www.google.com/settings/account

If you're seeing Chrome menus and dialogue in the wrong language, please follow this help center article to change Chrome's default language: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95416?hl=en

Please note you do need to update your language settings in both places.

Let me know in this new thread, if you've updated your language settings in both places and you're still seeing things that are not in your preferred language. Thank you!

Re: How do I make English my default language Mihail Fominyh 11/7/13 1:41 PM
The problem is not with the language of the interface, but with the function (the bug) of displaying google.ru, google.fi, google.no, etc - country specific pages - I get them every time I travel and I do it often. Annoying always. How can I tell Chrome to always used Google.com? Any suggestions for this?
Re: How do I make English my default language Mihail Fominyh 11/7/13 5:12 PM
Please, look at this example. I use Google.com, but now I am physically located in Norway, and the article provided for the today's picture above the search line is given in Norwegian. Although, I state in every possible setting that I want my Google only in English.

MelodyC has been effectively trolling this forum, repeating the same useless advice over and over.

She writes "Let me know if you've updated your language settings in both places and you're still seeing things that are not in your preferred language. Thank you!" - failing to recognise that most people are not getting their preferred language irrespective of their Chrome language settings.
