Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Cathal O Murchu 23/02/14 11:50
Since installing 10.9 Mavericks Google Chrome Helper and the Shockwave flash plugin have been using 50-100% of my CPU. I've tried every suggestion but nothing has worked. I have had to uninstall Chrome because it was damaging my MacBook Pro's battery. It seems this problem has been happening for almost 4 years to some people and its disgraceful that there's been no reply from Google.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Marguerite O'Connell 08/03/14 18:09
I'm having same problem.  What is the "helper" doing and why using so much CPU?  I can't find an answer and am close to uninstalling Chrome after 4 years of exclusive use.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power mstatkus 13/03/14 09:58
I just ran into this yesterday.  Laggy typing gave me a bad feeling I had something else going on.  Installed Kaspersky, ran scans, then started looking into what was eating up my CPU.  Several Chrome Helpers using 100% CPU causing my MacBook to run at 95 Celsius.  I started looking into other forums and posts on the issue, and nearest I could tell it may either be Extensions like AdBlock, or some other "under the hood" aka "Advanced Settings" check boxes I could uncheck for better performance.

I disabled AdBlock, unchecked the Scan for malicious stuff but I still had probably about 10 Chrome Helpers and a couple run at 100%.  Over time more, then its just waaaaay to hot.

Went back to Safari where my system pretty much idles.  Opened up all the same tabs I had open and it's perfectly fine.  Far too many postings on this to read through so hopefully they figure it out.  I'll try it again next time I see an update.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Chuck St 13/03/14 23:13
If you Google (no pun intended), this has been an issue all the way back to 2012...or was it 2011?

Anyways, Chrome has always been laggy, even more so when you have just a few useful extension, like LastPass, Evernote and AdBlock Plus. What I found out is that new OSX upgrade (10.7 --> 10.8 --> 10.9) always compounded the problem, especially with older MacBook. I have a MacBook Air (2010) and a newer one (2013). Chrome in 2010 is just unbearable. Chrome in 2013 is OK, though still lag.

However, Google NEVER FIXED this. They always fix the Windows version.

I am hoping that the more people complaint, the more Google will do something. But as I said, this issue has been around for a long time and Google not going to fix it. They WANT you to use Windows or Chromebook.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Carol Stimmel 14/03/14 08:18
Are there techniques to address this problem? I need Chrome because of certain plugins I use, but it is hammering my machine. I have to kill Chrome and use Safari.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power mstatkus 14/03/14 09:18
I stepped thru several forums that said to remove / disable Extensions, and then go in and adjust the Settings / Show Advanced Settings to uncheck a few under Privacy (the scan for malware etc) ...
It got to a point where I didn't have 6 Chrome Helpers running at 100%, but every time I launch Chrome now the few Extensions I do have crash and I get the beach ball pretty regularly.  I also started getting the "Ah snap something went wrong" messages.

Kaspersky is also warning me I have trojan (Trojan.JS.Iframe.aeq) activity when I launch Chrome and go to a corporate email hosted by Gmail.  It's requesting http://ckef.com/extension/updates.xml.... and if I block it none of googles services work.
This doesn't happen in Safari, so I don't know if it's being overly protective or if I actually got an Extension with malicious code in it.  It also could possibly be a theme I installed to better control my Profile/User accounts better.  I'm actually betting on that.

I only have the following
Adblock 2.6.25 (disabled)
Google Docs 0.5
JetBrains IDE Support 2.0
URL Advisor 14.0 (installed after - Kaspersky)
Virtual Keyboard 14.0 (installed after - Kaspersky)

Running at 95 Celsius after a bit and have 12 Chrome Helpers with 1 at 100%.  I closed all my tabs and now have 6 Chrome helpers, and one stuck at 100%.

I decided to completely remove Google Chrome.  Dragged it from /Applications to the trash.
But there are more Google related things hiding in /Library/Application Support/Google and ~/Library/Application Support/Google I opted to remove.

After re-installing and not installing any themes or extensions things seem to be ok.

Do you guys install themes by chance?

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Chuck St 14/03/14 11:43
I have themes installed, but I also have that in Chrome for Windows. No issue so far.

As a matter of fact, I logged-in to my Chrome and all plug-ins, themes and bookmarks are synced between the Mac and Windows version. ONLY in Mac the lagginess happens. So it has something to do with Chrome in Mac.

Interestingly, I also have Firefox Mac installed with bazillion plug-ins and no issue so far.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Orson Olson 18/03/14 04:14
I have the "chrome helper" problem, eating up all sort of processors and disk space, too. It arose immediately AFTER "vanquishing" the trojan horse "Genieo" problem.

I had managed to restart my machine every other day, and then suddenly (AFTER Genieo) needed to do the same every three hours - and now, about every hour. A ridiculous performance drag has developed, in other words.

From reading here and elsewhere (suggesting "managing" Chrome processing activities and deleting extensions to a bare minimum), the only solution is to trash and reinstall Chrome - or else surrender to the trojan monkeys.

Of course, I'm going to take note of the ten or so extensions that ran just fine BEFORE the Genieo trojan took over my home bar and search engine.

Safari isn't an option for my rMBP, and Firefox is getting long in the tooth and bloated. So trash and re-install is my clear course.

In my  case after Updating to maverick flash makes CPU overload (safari & chrome checked)

Everything works fine if I take under manual control Ram Cleaning (especialy Long Youtube videos)
  • Clearing through Magician app (never close now)
  • Seems not so much effective through "Sudo purge"
Sometime I even think that Apple has done this on purpose to make me buy a new macbook
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Bryan Fuhr 21/04/14 07:20
Same issues here. Crushing my battery life (fans running al the time). And grinds whole machine to a halt. Hello Google!?!?
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Chuck St 21/04/14 09:26
I just got a new MacBook Air 13" from my work and guess what... Chrome have no issue with the high CPU.

Either Google doesn't want to fix this problem (judging by the number of complaint here) or Apple purposely do this to buy a new Macbook like you said. :(
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Ian Robbins 24/04/14 14:21
Yep, the Google Chrome Helper thing is maxing my CPU and it's gotten worse.  Used to happen every few days but lately it's started to happen ever few hours.  Going to try a fresh install.  Thanks for the comments everyone.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Andy Iovanna 28/04/14 02:44
I'm having the same problem on my 2013 Macbook Pro.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power meimi 30/04/14 16:44
This problem just kicked in for me on my retina Macbook Pro and it's ridiculous. Fan is going all the time with Chrome on, and I've disabled all my extensions. With 8G of RAM, the idea that Chrome can be maxing out my memory is insane...
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Porter Bayne 03/05/14 18:56
Same.  Chrome 34.0.1847.131 on OSX.  MacBook Air, bought summer 2013 (i.e. the first with a  Haswell chipset).
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Joseph Friedman 05/05/14 07:50
This is also happening to me on my 13" MBP. I love Chrome and unfortunately, until this is fixed, it looks like I'm going to have to switch myself over to Safari. Ridiculous.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power UserLess 09/05/14 00:55
Same problem here. I've 2 Chrome Helpers and I've no idea why they're using so much CPU.

Btw, I one thing I did find out was that my HD was being filled though I haven't been downloading any large files lately. I found some Google folders and files that added up to some 2GB of who knows what. Deleting Chrome.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Matt Willen 10/05/14 18:40
I am so glad that I found this thread. I have been telling my ITS folks about this for months, and they just tell me my computer is fine. As much as I find Chrome to be a very pleasant experience to use, I got rid of it. Restarted my computer, and I seem to be back to normal. I can not believe how hot my computer was getting--I couldn't even set it on my lap.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power ChrisLeishman 11/05/14 18:20
I've seen this problem on several machines at my workplace. It is a common problem and not isolated to a few rare individual. I'd suggest that it's probably happening to everyone who doesn't regularly restart their laptop or Chrome - it's just that some people don't understand that their laptop shouldn't have the fan going all the time.

I do hope that Google does some investigation. I'd be happy to supply thread-dumps, etc, if I only knew where to send them.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power anotherJak 12/05/14 09:58
I'm still on OS X 10.7.5 and have the same issue -- so it isn't the OS. Also, I popped 16GB ram into the system to see if that might help... it isn't. Bummed that I may need to set-up myself to work on a different Browser...

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Joseph Friedman 12/05/14 14:57
Hi, Chris--while I agree (and everyone else seems to agree) that this is a common problem/not isolated to a few rare individuals, please be careful when suggesting reasons why it is occurring without having any sort of evidence to warrant this suggestion.

I regularly restart my laptop and Chrome and receive this issue consistently.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power ChrisLeishman 12/05/14 20:52
@Joseph: I wasn't suggesting that's why it occurs. I was suggesting that restarting fixes it (temporarily), and thus people who do habitually restart their laptops regularly might not notice the issue occurring (ie. those people we've all seen that still think you need to shutdown every time you close the laptop). It was a bit of joke, but the point is still the same: I consistently see this issue with almost everyone I know using Chrome - it's not isolated at all.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Mystery man 13/05/14 09:00
Same issue with quad-core CPU on both my laptop and desktop getting maxed out at 100% every time I start Google Chrome. Occurs when opening a fresh browser window or large cluster of tabs. Makes my computer work unnecessarily hard and increases energy consumption. A fix please?!!!
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Joe Germuska 13/05/14 09:21
FWIW, immediately after restarting (software update), I had this problem, so that's not a straightforward fix. I'm sure things are aggravated by the number of tabs I keep open.

My general fix when the fans start whirring is to open Activity Monitor.app and force quit any Google Chrome Helper tabs that are taking more than 80% CPU. It's not optimal, but at least it lets the fans slow down again.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Sarah Dee 14/05/14 14:43
Hi All,

Thanks for your reports on high CPU usage for Chrome on Mavericks. I will be looking into this issue further.

I did just want to provide general tips to reduce CPU usage in the meantime (but rest assured that I am looking into this issue further):
  1. Clear your cache. Chrome Menu > Tools > Clear Browsing Data... > Select Cached images and files > Clear browsing data
  2. Disable extensions. Try incognito, if the problem goes away, an extension may be at fault. Try disabling extensions one by one to isolate the issue.
Also, one user in an Apple forum posted that when he changed the plugin settings from 'Run Automatically' to 'Click to Play' his issue went away.

Thanks for your feedback and reports here.

Best,
Sarah
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Megan Butler 14/05/14 17:41
Hi Sarah - just a note, I'm running Mountain Lion and having the same problem, so it's not an issue isolated to Mavericks. (Already disabled my extensions, and changing settings from Click to Play seemed like a quick fix initially, but the problem still persisted.) Thanks for looking into this.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Joseph Friedman 14/05/14 17:49
Hi, Sarah. Thanks so much for looking into this. I've done all of your above steps and the problem still persists, unfortunately (just a note).

I look forward to seeing a fix in place so I can continue using Chrome!
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Mystery man 15/05/14 11:39
Hi again,

Although most of you are using Mac OSs, I am encountering these issues with my Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Enterprise OS versions. This 100% maxing out of of all CPU cores only started becoming a problem with Chrome near the beginning of the new year (February 2014?). The only extensions that I use are Adblock, DoNotTrackMe, Google Mail Checker, and Session Buddy.

Thanks again for all of the input, everyone. Hopefully, we'll figure something out!

Dee,
I've reloaded Chrome -- and kept plugins to only a couple. Using Task Manager - I am seeing that the issue is related to a spreadsheet... and not a particularly burley one, either. Thoughts?

Like most, I've been struggling with this problem for quite a while... However, disabling the Amazon extension seemed to do the trick for me---at least for now.

Hold on tom_taylor, I have using Canary build for Mac and I am having the same issue, do not even waste your time in downloading and installing. Personally, I am uninstalling Chrome of my Macs...
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Sarah Dee 19/05/14 14:52
Hi All,

Thanks for your patience. So we can get more information, can you click Chrome Menu > Tools > Task Manager, then report on this forum thread what is using the largest amount of memory/CPU.

It's likely that it has to do with an extension--so you may also want to try seeing if you can replicate this in incognito mode? If you could also please include your full version number of Chrome, that would also be helpful (type chrome://version into the address bar).

Thanks!

Cheers,
Sarah
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power GT. 19/05/14 19:14
I have the same problem, I don't know why they don't fix chrome, I can't even watch a 5 minutes youtube video because my mac gets very hot.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power marty39mcc 19/05/14 19:26
Did that (Task Manager). Turns out that one tab, opened to http://www.investopedia.com/terms/f/freemarket.asp, was using by far the most CPU. Closed that and CPU returned to normal. Reopened it and it was using more than other tabs but not too much.

Given that info, it's not surprising that the other suggested fixes (extensions on click, clear cache) did not help me at all.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power marty39mcc 19/05/14 20:04
I closed the Investopedia tab (because I didn't really want it anyway), but now Mac Activity Monitor again shows Google Chrome Helper hogging the CPU. Chrome's Task Manager, however, shows another tab as by far the biggest user of CPU. This tab was open before, when the Investopedia tab was the CPU hog, but supposedly it's now the culprit. I think either the Chrome Task Manager is lying, or Chrome is doing something seriously wrong. At this point I will quit using Chrome and use ---- instead. Maybe I should use Mac's native browser, since it uses even less CPU than ----.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Joseph Friedman 19/05/14 20:13
It was acting up tonight and so I went into the Task Manager; looks like Flash is what's acting up (I was watching SNL on NBC.com). However, this is still frustrating, as it shouldn't be pumping my CPU to >100%. See attached screenshot.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Joseph Friedman 19/05/14 20:18
I was able to replicate this in Incognito mode, upon closing the tab using Flash, the problem persists and I have multiple Google Chrome Helper processes in my Activity Monitor, using >100% of my CPU.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Hemant Padmanabhan 19/05/14 20:29
Hi Sarah,

I have the latest version of Chrome running on OS X Mavericks (fully updated) on an Late 2011 MacBook Pro with Core i7 at 2GHz. No extensions or plugins enabled. Browser History fully cleared and in Incognito mode. Chrome keeps consuming CPU on an idle page (idle here referring to a rendered page where I'm not doing anything).
The Task Manager shows the page tab consuming the most CPU non-stop between 13%-15%, followed by the GPU at 3%-5% and the browser at 2%-4%. The same page in question ticks next to nothing on Firefox and Safari. If left open in Chrome the system eventually overheats.
The page in question is a logged in profile page on an online MMORPG with minimal animated gifs and some ajax functions. The game devs have confirmed there is no such issue with Chrome on Windows on the same page, the issue is isolated to Chrome on Mac.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power daveny 21/05/14 18:30
Sarah,

Thank you so much for giving some attention to us poor beleaguered Mac users -- I'd really rather not have to go back to using Safari, but like many of these other folks, Chrome has gone from being just a bit of a memory hog to a devourer of RAM and constant overheating culprit.

I did find that the Google Translate widget/extension was being a bear - disabling it has provided some significant relief. According to task manager, pages with lots of activity going on, such as Gmail or (currently) this one that eat up around 100-200MB and up to 20% CPU when active.  Another site with some graphics (http://www.6wunderkinder.com/en/#/welcome) is using about the same amount of memory, but very little CPU while in the background.

HOWEVER, when I look into things with Activity Monitor, there's still a Chrome Helper that's killing my system!  Looking into "open files and ports" for the process (which is eating up a whole gig of virtual memory on top of a consistent 200MB real and 20% CPU), this is what I get:

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Max83 22/05/14 09:22
I have this issue, too, and I've done everything that people suggest:
- disabled all extensions
- disabled all plugins
- reset to default all flags
- run incognito mode
- deleted image/file cache

all to no avail. I really don't want to reset the browser (and then download all offline stuff etc again).

Any sign of a bug fix or diagnosis on this?

I finally got a solution!
After many attempts (actually since 2012), I finally found the best solution ever!!! I switched to FireFox!!! No more RAM issues and battery last longer! Hope that helps!!!
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Max83 22/05/14 12:07
just to clarify; you mean Chrome > Window > Task Manager

Sarcasm and pessimism are no way to add healthy contributions to a community looking to report and work together to rectify possible bugs.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Griff Jones 23/05/14 18:36
I'm running into this issue.  I only started using Chrome, as I purchased Chromecast yesterday.  Google Chrome Helper is killing my MBP, notably when using Chromecast to stream from a webpage.

This seems a somewhat shortsighted as I'm using Chromecast to remain wireless to stream, yet if this is an ongoing issue, I may have to return to the old fashioned way...
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Fabio Bullegas 24/05/14 02:58
Same problem, but I have some news. When I terminated the indicted processes, Chrome said: "Shockwave Flash has crashed". I moved to Firefox and my Mac became very hot, in the task manager there was a Shockwave process using too much CPU between the Firefox processes, so I think that the problem is Shockwave Flash.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Zack Porter 24/05/14 13:07
"They WANT you to use Windows or Chromebook."

Either that or they want mac users to just stop using chrome..
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power ohnerdgirl 27/05/14 07:30
Same here, running Win 7 Home Premium.  Chrome's running up the loading (and temp) on c0 (I7), making for all the fan noise.  The other cores are barely loaded.  When things are really bad, c0 is running near 75C, while the other 3 cores are around 55C.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power daveny 27/05/14 07:49
Huh! Now that's interesting - b/c it would imply that the problem isn't necessarily w/ the OS, but with how Chrome runs on intel core i5/i7 machines. That would certainly explain why newer MacBooks aren't experiencing this problem...
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power daveny 27/05/14 07:51
I posted the process and app data from one of my sessions here, but it's not appearing anymore in the thread -- just wanted to make sure it was received so I can be of help, or if I need to post data again!

Hi, all. Having been ignoring this problem successfully for too long and recently it's started getting ridiculous. Tried disabling a few extensions (most notably Google Translate, which I have to admit is a very handy extension). Chrome Helper % CPU immediately dropped from over 100% to about 2% (12 tabs open). Takeaway: try disabling some extensions and see if that helps. Not the optimal solution, I realize.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Sarah Dee 06/06/14 11:36
Hi All,

We are still trying to figure out what is causing this issue. If possible, could you please take a screenshot of the Google Task Manager when the Google Helper CPU is over 100%?

Follow these steps:
  1. Chrome Menu > Tools > Task Manager
  2. Click on CPU (so highest processes at top)
  3. Take a screenshot (if you are unsure how, check out these instructions as they vary by computer)
Then please post a screenshot on this thread.

Thanks!
Sarah

I found that it was the URL Advisor from Kaspersky that was running at 99%. I uninstalled it, and immediately the fan began to quite down gradually. So far so good.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Ana-Cristina 07/06/14 13:02
After all these months, no freaking solution. It's annoying and I can't use my chromecast because of course, you need Chrome to do it. Fix your damn browser and stop asking for more screenshots since it's obvious that there's a problem. You're just stalling and really, doing nothing! Fix the browser!
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Callum Tweedie - Walker 08/06/14 10:05

Am I the only one having Chrome use in excess of 300%? For me, >100% is happening all the time, but it will almost always go above 250%. YouTube seems to be a massive hog for me (I have no YouTube related extensions), meaning a service owned by Google is causing me problems in a Google browser. Argh, haha. The framerate drops to an unwatchable, low rate. What was interesting was that having the task manager window in front of the video in the background caused it to go back to normal playback fps. Though I'm sure that's of no significance. None of my 4 extensions cause any problems whatsoever.

I'm getting fed up now, I reeeaally don't want to have to switch browsers, but this is seriously impacting my battery life. Also, I can no longer have my MacBook on my lap; I could fry an egg what with the temperatures it's reaching.

Mid 2010 15" MacBook Pro, 2.66GHz i7, 8Gb RAM, if that's of any help.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Ted Manasa 10/06/14 07:24
I have abandoned Chrome for Safari and am not looking back. Battery life has doubled and the laptop is cool to the touch. What a dream. Goodbye Chrome.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power amityweb 10/06/14 14:59
I just upgraded my Macbook to a SSD drive and now when I start Chrome it shoots up to over 100% CPU for several minutes, then dies down. Every time. Was fine before the SSD upgrade. Macbook is very hot, fans are in overdrive when Chrome starts.

I have been running into this issue lately.. any suggestion yet ?
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Stanford Griffith 13/06/14 11:10
I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that Chrome still isn't a 64-bit browser. It's the only major browsers for Macs that isn't. (Yes, everyone knows a development version has supposedly been in the works since 2009: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=18323, but that's not helpful.)

Chrome completely drains my MacBook Air's power: both processing (CPU) and battery life. When I review the Energy tab of Activity Monitor, Chrome is always the top one (It's the top of all of all tabs except Disk.) and ranges from 50 to 90. It's ridiculous that a browser takes more to run than Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and the OS itself combined do!
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power MHSzymczyk 16/06/14 21:31
Same issue on my end....seems like the issue is with Flash video specifically.  Any time I view Vimeo, YouTube or any sites using Flash video, my CPU % for Chrome goes through the roof...makes the browser unstable to the point I have to force quit out of it.  Tried all the suggestions above with disabling extensions, closing programs in Taskbar, etc.  Flash videos work fine on my Macbook with Safari or Firefox and this issue is specific to Chrome...wasn't an issue a few months ago so not sure what was updated recently with Chrome to cause this issue.  Almost at the point of ditching Chrome and just using Safari...
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Nibs91 18/06/14 09:51
Same problem here....chrome is unusable. Tried all suggested solutions to no avail. My activity monitor shows multiple "google chrome helper" and runs up all my cpu. I'll be using Safari until this damn issue is fixed. Chrome is the ONLY program on my MacbookPro that uses so much CPU. Even photoshop doesn't use as much as chrome.

For the google mods here, please consider taking this issue seriously. Last night my macbook reached 89˚C with fans running at 6000+ rpm. No other apps open with NINE "google chrome helpers" using all the cpu.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power jansaldi 19/06/14 10:28
This has been a reported problem at least back to 2012.  I disabled all extensions and still had the problem.  I uninstalled and re-installed as suggested by someone and still have the problem.  I think it is related to syncing which I do not want to turn off.  In any case it is a joke that this hasn't been fixed yet.

Google seems to be getting the Microsoft disease.  Keep building on top of the old platform instead of doing nice clean new products.  Google Maps is great on mobile, but it has turned just about useless on the PC.  Somebody tell designers, new "cool" features are not woth it, when the performance of the basic product that peopel like, degrades.  Maps is no longer intuitive and responsive.

In any case, I have given up trying to sort it and switched to Firefox.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Marguerite O'Connell 19/06/14 11:39
This past weekend I uninstalled Chrome and switched to Safari. Chrome had become completely unusable on my laptop & I found myself trying to do complex writing projects on my iPad rather than even turn on the computer. This just wasn't a tenable situation. Switching has not been as painful as I thought it would be. I also cleaned up my hard drive to free up space and my early 2011 Mac Book Pro is now running much faster and cooler. I have no idea why Chrome started being an issue on my machine as the problem started  months after I upgraded to Mavericks. My theory has to do w/ Mavericks & Chrome both using a lot of memory to run and w/ a 4 GB HD there is only so much available. I know it is not the reason 'per se' as many have posted here who have 8 GB  & even 16 GB and are having this problem, but for my Mac it is as good a theory as any Google has given (none) for the problem. I hope that eventually someone somewhere figures this out as I was extremely satisfied with Chrome up until it made my Mac unusable. For now though I felt I had no choice but to switch.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power waugse 20/06/14 04:42
Having the same problem since 2011.

Before fall 2011 I had a Macbook Pro with a Dual Core, Chrome ran absolutely fine on it. In fact, Chrome managed large amounts of tabs much better than Safari, which at the time had been outdated and laggy.

In fall 2011, however, i bought a new Macbook Air with an 1.8 GHz i7 and 4GB RAM. From day 1, Chrome has been atrocious on this machine (while still running smooth on the dual core machine). At the beginning both computers ran the same version of Mac OSX Lion, so I highly doubt it is a software problem.

Even with just one flash-less tab open, Chrome makes the MBA's fans go off like there is no tomorrow. I deleted all extensions, no avail. I installed Click-to-Flash, no avail. I cleared the cache and everything you can possibly clear, no avail. I deinstalled and reinstalled Chrome, no avail. I even clean installed the Mac OS!!! You guessed it: No avail.

For the past 2 years, I have exclusively been using Safari. Sometimes I get tempted, open Chrome, only to close it again five minutes later because the computer gets burning hot. Google Chrome Helper is a bastard.

Same thing for me. It's happening for more than a year, so don't looks to be related to Mavericks update.

The only thing that is solving is to close it and star to use Safari.
Sad solution.

I tried it, everything looked good for 5 Minutes, then the manifold Google Chrome Helpers kicked in and the MBA (Mavericks, 1.8 GHz i7, 4GB RAM) started boiling as usual.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power LT3211 09/07/14 14:22
Sarah - note that I am still on Lion, so this issue is not limited to Mountain Lion and Mavericks.

I've been having this issue for quite some time.

I have finally relented and removed my last 2 extensions (Adblock Plus and Google Docs), but it continues to occur. As much as I love Chrome, I'm not sure how much longer I can continue to burn my CPU.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Adam Geiger 15/07/14 12:40
I've been having this problem for a long time now (Macbook Pro from 2011, OSX 10.7.5) - Chrome is the only program on my computer that makes my computer read/write data constantly (with peaks around 7mbps). I've tried all of the solutions posted here and elsewhere and none of them work. Chrome is nearly unusable for me now - I'm done with it and am starting to purge all Google products from my life. Horrid customer service mixed with products that barely work do not make for a good company. Google actively makes my job more difficult (I am a web designer, so having my internet browser suck up all of the CPU, freeze, or make my computer sound like it's trying to join the Air Force makes my job suck). Not wasting anymore time with Google (except for the time it took me to write this, clearly...). Peace.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power John Hrindo 16/07/14 07:32
This does not serve as an answer though, it is merely passing the issue along. This has been going on for months with no resolution or explanation as to how or why the browser is eating up over 1.3gb of memory with one window and ten tabs open.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power M. M. Nicolas 16/07/14 12:04
Hi,

You might want to check the memory usage of the chrome's extension via the "chrome://memory-redirect/" page.

What good is it if none of the stats even match up?
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power tonyc01 21/07/14 07:43
Sarah,
I agree with jansaldi (Joe) in that this is not just a Mac issue. I've experienced the same problems on my PC laptop and am running Windows 8.1, i5-3317U, 1.7 GHz, 8.00 GB, 64-bit. I've shut down Chrome and had to make Firefox as my default browser for now because it renders my laptop useless almost immediately.

Seriously Google?

Athens, that didn't work. Or ok, that didn't work for a lot of people. Me and many others have tried that without any (positive) results.

Google should stop ignoring us. After all, they were supposedly better than Apple, yet Safari works better. Unfortunately Safari doesn't work with the Chromecast I bought and that I can only use with Chrome, so fix it Google and stop being a little B!
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Joseph Friedman 25/07/14 05:44
Athens, this has been suggested previously and hasn't helped. Unfortunately, no one has been able to come up with a fix for this and it seems to affect a large number of Mac (and now PC) users. It's equally unfortunate that something like this hasn't alerted Chrome developers.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Darren Wagstaff 27/07/14 23:57
I'm having exactly the same issue. I'm glad I have found this thread... I was planning to upgrade my iMac and MacbookPro - as I thought it was issues with their power.

It has destroyed my battery on my MacbookPro.

I too have tried uninstalling Chrome... but the problem still relates to Google related software still lurking in the background.

Can Google attend to this problem? Why (if this has been an issue for 4 years) has this not been resolved... there has to be some reasoning behind it?

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power jdaves 28/07/14 18:56

I had incredibly choppy scrolling with Chrome for at least the past 2-3 months on Mavericks 10.9.3 and 10.9.4 with my Late-2013 rMBP 2.3GHz w/ 750M. On both integrated and discrete graphics, Chrome would scroll terribly on the rMBP display -- but it scrolls just fine on my external 1920x1200 24" monitor (driving both screens at the same time) on integrated graphics! I figure this is definitely a bug in Chrome. I knew I'd messed with the Chrome experimental flags before, so I decided to take a peek.

Here are the steps I took that seemed to fix my choppy scrolling:

  1. Type "chrome://flags" into the URL bar
  2. Found "Accelerated overflow scroll" as the second option - was set to Default
  3. Changed this to Enabled
  4. Restarted Chrome
  5. After letting tabs load, it seems to have scrolling pretty close to, if not the same as it used to be before. I have less CPU usage from scrolling, switching tabs, and playing content.
  6. I turned it off and restarted Chrome after testing out a variety of websites to see if the issue would come back. Strangely, the issue is gone. Maybe a setting got stuck somewhere and I reset it. I DUNNO.

The funny thing is, the only site I've found so far (in my admittedly limited testing) is this very thread. Someone else give this a try if you're having the same issue. Hope this helps!

Same problem for months and months, I never use Chrome for this reason. Google is a mess factory, nothing more nothing less.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power ChrisHacken 02/08/14 14:04
Same issues going on here.  Not as severe as the OP is claiming, but I left my Macbook Pro idle for ~30 minutes.. turned off the display and everything.. came back and 20% of my battery is gone.  My Macbook is literally a week old, so I know the battery is good.  I'm barely getting 3-4 hrs of battery life with basic browsing/idle usage.  I have no choice but to start using another browser.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power J oyridr 05/08/14 18:52
Hi there I'd like to report that a solution to this problem has been sought without having to go to awkward lengths to fix it... I recently got a new macbook retina and couldn't believe what was happening to my tempts and cpu use when using chrome, I suspected it may be because chrome is 32bit and when using safari (64 bit), none of these problems occurred, however i do not find safari to be a great user experience, not as great as chrome, so you can imagine my joy at reading that the Canary (beta) version of Chrome for mac now supports 64bit and I can confirm that the problems have ceased, chrome helper is still using a good chunk of power but the fans are no longer going running at full tilt when I go near a flash plugin! Hope this helps you all.

https://www.google.co.uk/intl/en/chrome/browser/canary.html
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Sam Borgman 05/08/14 19:15
You say not running at full tilt, meaning still working harder than when using Safari? Or same as Safari now?
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power jdaves 07/08/14 05:37
THANK YOU! The latest Chrome Canary has buttery smooth scrolling now just like Safari, and Flash uses less CPU. My temps are 5C lower on average at idle, though my rMBP seems to run hot. So much improvement. Can't wait til the stable branch is merged with 64-bit support.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Sam Borgman 07/08/14 11:43
By the time the stable release comes out it will end up with enough garbage code and junk in it to start performing just like current Google Chrome or Chromium lol So don't be so hopeful. Moreover, if Flash ALSO doesn't get better there is no hope.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Raqs Eds 09/08/14 17:24
I just wanted to tell you thanks so much for this tip. I had to give up using Chrome a couple months ago because it was making my MPB totally unusable, what with the overheating, the fans running at full power, and the memory usage. I was using Safari which is decent enough but missed Chrome and my lovely extensions too much. Took your advice, installed the Canary build today. Also, based on what someone else had mentioned, I went into the advanced settings and unchecked something similar to "use optimum resources". I say similar because I'm trying to find that option again but Canary is being buggy and the settings screen does not scroll properly, chunks of it do not display, etc. Apart from some off and on screen glitchiness, which is to be expected with a beta build, the difference Canary has made on my laptop is amazing! No humming fans, crashed pages or spinning beachballs. Thanks again.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Sam Borgman 09/08/14 17:43
I can't replace Safari, with the ClickToPlugin plugin, Flash handling is THE BEST on Safari. Flash will never load on any site until you click the grey place holder for it. Also stops Flash ads. Flash is the main culprit in more browser problems. I try to switch to Chrome now and then but YouTube becomes so annoying on it that I have to stick with Safari.

Seriously! Give it a try and you will also stick with Safari.

It actually stops all sorts of plugins from auto loading. It can also replace Flash with Safari's own HTML5 player, which needs lot less resources. Its a must have for anyone concerned about high battery-drain.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Ana-Cristina 10/08/14 02:53
Oh yes Raqs, you're so right. Right now I just tried using the setting and they're barely working. The scroll is freaking annoying.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Ana-Cristina 10/08/14 02:54
Google just confirmed that they do not care under any form about the OSX users of Chrome. So yes, I'll stick with my Safari and I'll sell my Chromecast since it's a poor investment. Screw you Chrome & Google!
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power waugse 10/08/14 14:38
That's good to know, thanks for sharing! Have been trying to decide for months with what app suite to update my employees' Macs, but if OSX support isn't considered in the near future I won't depend on google.

I have to say, even if safari feels a bit dated at times especially when compared to the sleek Chrome interface, it's amazingly refined for OSX and saves so much power and battery and hence users' nerves too. No need to hassle with chrome! :)

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power David Reens 18/08/14 06:04
I have this problem and I'm still on OSX 10.6.8! Any page that has an interactive ad of some sort uses the whole CPU.

I switched to chrome because I was annoyed at firefox for using continuous 8% CPU on tabs with only a google search, but I guess that was wonderful performance compared
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Rafal Kachniarz 18/08/14 06:24
To still be able to use Chrome normally, I decided to install Quickres and change my working resolution to a non-retina one. The esthetic gains are tiny in comparison to the huge performance boost that not having to scale everything down from a higher resolutions gives, and the Chrome helper problems is also fixed.

It seems that Chrome's way of supporting Retina displays is really inefficient and just eats up resources (though it may not be Chrome's fault).
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Darren Wagstaff 18/08/14 07:38
I must admit I have stopped using Chrome for a while now because of it's consistent inability to be usable with a Mac...

I too have installed Canary Chrome... without any addons or extensions and kept it as basic as you can get... and I can confirm it is 20 times better than the standard Chrome. It is still not 100% and it is buggy bit for some sites that work better in Chrome this is my option now.

My use of Chrome is now down by 70% to what it used to be as I use Firefox, Safari and Opera for differing things... none of these other options are great... but none of them are as bad as the normal Chrome. So I would recommend anyone trying Canary as a trial to see what performance differences there are in the real world.

It is a shame that these bugs and issues have not been fixed after so many complaints and years of issues. But Canary is an example of some level of better compatibility - so in that sense alone I do not feel Google is 100% against mac users.

For people suffering the Google Chrome Helper abnormal CPU usage problem on Mac OS X, please star these issues.

Issue 373923: Google Chrome Helper Process Taking up >100% CPU on Macs
Issue 399960: Video playback, CSS transitions, and other GPU operations drastically heat up 13" Retina Macbook Pros

Looks like Chrome developers believe this is a Flash problem, but I don't think so. This problem occurs without any plug-ins.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Darren Wagstaff 24/08/14 00:28
I have had problems with Chrome for well over a year... Over heating... excessive memory usage making the use of my mac unbearable.

After finding this thread I discontinued using Chrome as it isolated my issue and highlighted what to look at.

A while back due to others comments I tried Chrome Canary. Not perfect but 100% better than Chrome.

Well that was until 5 days ago... now if I leave Chrome Canary idle for 10 - 15 minutes it freezes... spinning ball... nothing can be done except for Forcing Quit.

This occurs when I have 4 or more tabs open in Canary Chrome. This is when NONE of the websites I am visiting are using shockwave or flash - so the issue is 100% nothing to do with Adobe.

I use Firefox, Safari and Opera... Each one has issues and none are perfect - and each one has a challenge with a certain type of website but overall they are functional, do not freeze and do not overheat my mac. Each one copes with flash and shockwave... All be it Firefox has a challenge from time to time... Safari works with Adobe better than most.

I was feeling a bit of light at the end of the tunnel with Canary Chrome... but for some strange reason over the past few days changes are now making even Canary Chrome 100% unusable. It is a shame... but a browser is simply a browser no matter who the developer is.

Using a mac I just need the tools to get the job done... if google can't provide efficient and effective tools then I have to use something else... from a users experience you need to choose what works.

The end game will NEVER be a mac user switching to windows or google os no matter what happens. Neither windows or google os offer 10% of what a mac offers in terms of functionality and the scope of work I do on a daily basis - and that seems to be the case with every mac user I have talked to about this. People use macs for a reason and if Chrome does not want to feature in their usage then so be it.

On some level I am sure Google are working on this to some level or Canary Chrome would not of been a better option (all be it for a short space of time).

One commenter has said 'Google have confirmed that they do not care about Mac users'... Where did this person find this information - or are they just speaking from emotion and rumour mungering - as I can't see ANY organisation EVER making a statement of this kind - as it does not make business sense to make such statements. It is useful to only ever share facts when discussing these issues not exaggerated BS. (Please forgive me if I am mistaken).
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power mpgunner 24/08/14 14:46
I find it stunning that Google can't replicate and fix this.  It isn't hard to replicate on Windows 7.  The only extension I've had is Google Doc's.

But this has been going on for a long time now in large part due to Google trying to be so smart on it's caching so it can restore all of the windows.  Now, it is a fat pig unless you run only one page.  Who does that now?

What is more troubling is it seems Google has gone to the old Microsoft model of letting users trouble shoot and perhaps they may fix things while trying to add tons of features.

You guys are forever hopelessly hopeful. Just give up and move on. Google isn't fixing this if they don't think its a problem that need fixing. Sooner you move to Safari to something the better. This is not even worth all this discussion, even if you are a web developer. Move on.

How can I move on for example when I bought a Chromecast?  Wasted money because Google can't get their shit together?

"Just trying to help you get on with your life". Oh really? Like this? Because your comment sound really rude and it's a help that nobody asked for. Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Sam Borgman 30/08/14 11:40
Google devs are busy looking for unbroken things to "fix". This doesn't interest them since its beyond their capacity.

@tushargarg9: you have 15-20 tabs, maybe they all have flash running.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Patrick Jacobs 31/08/14 09:55
I would also like to confirm this is an issue with my computer as well. There is a large spike in CPU to about 130%, and my CPU temperature goes from high 40s to mid 70s (highest seen was 81ºC) with just a single tab open running a Flash stream. I did not have this issue with my old 2010 13" MacBook Pro; I've only seen it happen with my brand new Retina MacBook Pro. I also only see it in Chrome and Firefox, as Safari keeps my CPU temps in the low 60s and only ~70% CPU with the exact same Flash stream running. Perhaps this is an issue with Retina screens? Something like Flash is using way too much processing power to render it at a retina resolution than it should be?

I would greatly appreciate a fix to this. Chrome is my main browser, but now when I want to watch a Twitch.tv stream without my MacBook Pro's case becoming way too hot, I have to use Safari. Attached are two screenshots of my Chrome Task Manager: one when the tab with Flash is shown, and one when the tab with Flash is hidden. Also included is my hardware overview:

Hey All,

Apple just released an update to their OS. Could you update to the latest version on your Mac and ensure your Chrome is up to date and let me know if you see an improvement?

If if it still happening, can you please again disable all extensions and test with just one tab and share the details with us about this test case?

Thanks,

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Patrick Jacobs 27/09/14 15:19
Hi Sarah,

Thanks for the heads up about the update. Using Twitch as my test, I noticed that my fans were a bit better at controlling temperature. However, there was a noticeable difference between Safari loading a stream and Chrome (Version 37.0.2062.124) loading a stream. Safari's CPU usage never spiked above 140%, but during the Twitch advertisements, Chrome would spike 200%+ (first attachment) until the ad was over. Normal stream watching was around the same for both: 110% to 130%, (second attachment) fluctuating depending on how much was going on.

Also, I'm not sure if this is a thing with Chrome or how I'm positioning my laptop, but it seems like my fans aren't coming on as soon as they should when watching a stream in Chrome compared to Safari. Chrome seems to cause CPU temp spikes up to 95º then the fans kick on fairly loudly, but Safari keeps everything around 80º with more gradual fan speed increases. Again, not sure if this is due to Chrome or something else.

Thanks.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Infinite Products LLC 06/10/14 20:30

If you open the Activity Monitor and see that a process called "google chrome helper" is using too much CPU, here's how I fixed it:

I went to Chrome settings/content settings/Plugins and selected Click To Play for all plugins.  (The default is Run Automatically.)

This fixed my problem.  Now you have to click whenever you want to run a youtube video or other plugins, but it's worth it.  It stops those stupid Flash ads from loading, too, so that's an extra bonus.

I'm posting this because when I had the problem, I couldn't find any solutions at all.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Sascha Demirovic 07/10/14 22:55
That solved the Problem for me:

1. Close all instances of goole chrome
2. Delete the Folder ~/Library/Application Support/Google
3. Empty Trash

Now when I start Chrome it keeps responsive, even after opening the dev tools.

Hi,

Running Chrome 38 on OSX 10.9.5 with 2GB RAM, I became another victim of the Google Chrome Helper. Had no problems on OSX 10.6.8, but recently had to upgrade the OS. With a freshly installed OS, I was surprised that the computer is so slow. Opened Activity Monitor to learn about the Google Chrome Helper. Googled it, tried all the fix suggestions. nothing helps.

So unfortunately, have to uninstall Chrome for now until you fix the ridiculously named Helper.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Joseph Friedman 27/10/14 10:15
Hi--

Not only has this problem continued for nearly a year now, but now the Google Chrome Helper process replicates and stops responding. This has caused significant trouble on my machine and I have been forced to quit and stop using Chrome until it is fixed.

I just wanted to re-iterate my frustration and disappointment.

Thanks.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Erick Rosas 27/10/14 10:38
I stop using Chrome because of the same reason, I even remove from all my Macs and I been running without it since April, but a few days ago decided to gave it a chance considering that I update to Yosemite on OSX and I was really happy, I really like Chrome but days after doing that my rMBP model late 2013 with 8G of RAM was running really slow so I was checking the activity monitor and the Google Helper was using a over 150% CPU so I decided to give up and went back to Firefox.

It makes me thing that Google don't care about this issue!
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Nibs91 27/10/14 18:43
I just bought a brand new MacbookPro. No chance in hell am I downloading chrome again until Google fixes the problem. Their services work just fine with the new Safari.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Orhan KURULAN 28/10/14 01:35
The same problem continues with Yosemite on Macbook Air.
"Chrome helper not responding" uses too much CPU and causes Macbook to heat unusually.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power John D Dunne 28/10/14 21:00
Hi, Sarah.

I too have finally abandoned Chrome after many, many months of an overheated CPU on a MacBook pro. Multiple iterations of G Chrome Helper, with one often over 100% CPU, have just become too much of a hassle, even though I otherwise am devoted to Chrome (on my iMacs, for example, where I have no such problem).

My question to you is why, after all this time, there has not been a fix for this? How can we make this a higher priority?

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Sam Borgman 28/10/14 23:36
Yes its silly to even try to use Chrome when you have Safari. I use Chrome once in a while just to see how G+ and Youtube stuff work, if I'm missing any nice feature on Safari. I keep 10 to 20 Youtube pages open in Safari with ClicktoPlugin extension, it doesn't let Flash run, so Youtube doesn't use any CPU until you click the video to run it. This is the MOST VITAL plugin I've ever used, since Flash is the killer of all things (I've seen Chrome Helper thing goes crazy with Flash plugin working on certain pages). It also lets you use HTML5 player instead of Flash, on any site. Win win all the way!
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power bgun3 30/10/14 04:48
This helped a little. Being on my first macbook a year ago - i thought all the things that were happening were because my Mac was glitchy, or was a lemon. Silly me. I had to turn my computer in for repair 3 times now, overheating, fan issues, all of these things led to other issues. I just took it in for the 3rd time and flat out bought a new one because my warranty is up and they've already had it for 4 days and I just can't deal. I noticed once before that Chrome was eating up my system, but didn't look too hard. Now after 2 days of a BRAND spanking new macbook pro - it's starting to get glitchy too and has already crashed once. So I think, hm... I'm literally only running outlook, pdf viewer, finder and chrome. What the hell is going on? 2 Macbook pros doing the same thing? Chrome helper. That's what. I am using my entire ram because I have 2 windows with maybe 10 tabs each? I get it, that is a lot, but seriously??? A Macbook can't handle that?

I was a loyal Firefox user from 2003 to 2012 when an update rendered my bookmarks not usable. I switched to Chrome and was fine, but now, I'm ALL too happy to go back to Firefox if this is what I have to do to GET ON WITH THINGS.

Ain't nobody got time for this.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power adpea 30/10/14 20:15
I know that these issues have been discussed, but I didn't see where anyone had submitted a process sample of the misbehaving Google Chrome Helper process.

I have attached it.

The Helper runs at about 35-38% when a Flash video is running, but not full-screen. When the video is full-screen the CPU for the process goes to 150-170% and stays there. Google Chrome, the parent process, continues to hover around 10% maximized or non-maximized, even with video running.

I have tested with and without Extensions, it doesn't appear to make a difference. I have tried with a Google profile sync, and without.

I have run Chrome for a long time on my MBP without issue but when I got a 2014 MPB(r), I immediately had the issue.

If this isn't helpful or repetitive, I apologize, I'm just trying to help someone identify the issue.

Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power Darren Wagstaff 31/10/14 00:30
Thanks for your input. Was the OS and software on your old MBP updated?

I ask because on my 2010 MBP I have had this problem throughout... whether I am running a Flash video or not... I have also had the same problem whilst visiting websites that are not using any Adobe software at all...

So I can't say I fully understand your experience of a difference between using an older MBP and a 2014. And I don't fully understand that your only experience is when you say you are playing a Flash video either.

Perhaps there is a common factor that we are all missing.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power adpea 31/10/14 08:12
Yes, it was running Yosemite as well. I've not installed Flash...I'm resisting, but if I have to use FF or Safari, I'll have to install Flash so I'll probably cave and use Flash over Pepper and hopefully that helps?

In my experience, I've had this Chrome issue happen about 15% of the times that I've built Mac systems...same hardware, same process, same Chrome; just sometimes Pepper goes crazy, sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't, it never does, but when it does, it always does.

Unfortunately, the only way to "fix" it is to rebuild the OS; again, in my experience.

I disabled hardware acceleration and that fixed my issues. My CPU would be pegged out a 100% for ever. One good test site I used was betanews.com. Because of all the ads and what not.  Anyway, please try this and let me know if this helps others....

I tested Canary and Dev version 40 and ot seems that there is no problem with them.

Chrome helper is responding and working properly.

However with stable version of Chrome things are going crazy. Higher Cpu with burning macbook air!

I cannot go on with stable version of Chrome anymore till it is fixed since I detected that with Canary my battery lasts 1 hour more than Chrome stable version.

Too sad to have such experience on such a Google product..

It's not only Chrome. I was tired of a burning hot MacBook Pro (I even got burn marks!), bought an SSD and installed a fresh MacOS Yosemite 10.10.
I'm using Safari instead of Chromes. Even so, the Google Docs still has 100% energy impact.
Re: Google Chrome Helper using far too much CPU power cblakeg 12/11/14 12:01
Chrome is terrible on Mac. I'm coming from a small i5 Surface Pro with 4 gigs ram to a 2012 Macbook Pro 2.8 ghz i7 with 8 gigs ram. The Surface Pro is great with Chrome. The Macbook Pro can't handle playing 1080p video. It can barely handle 720p with intermittent choppiness. I disabled all my CPU hogging Chrome extensions. I didn't know extensions ate as much CPU as they do until I ran Chrome Task Manager. Safari handles 1080p video fine.
Is Apple making it difficult on Google or is Google struggling with Chrome development?
Firefox plays 1080p video on the same Macbook Pro mentioned above without a hiccup. This confirms the problem lies with Google development.
Please fix!

As of today - 2015 Jan 10, When I open Chrome in Macbook Pro 16GB and browsing a web site that has some video like Facebook, youtube and other website like Yahoo, I noticed that you can hear the fan and then it drain your battery fast. I was using two days ago without using chrome and my laptop battery runs more than 5 hours, but yesterday when I tried using Chrome same steps that I did in Safari, the battery drain less than 3 hours. It seems there is something wrong with Chrome browser. I also did a testing just a couple of hours ago using my Windows laptop, DELL, and same result, chrome kills the battery compare to IE or Firefox. It seems Chrome has an issue on their updates. I never experience this before when using Chrome. It seems there were some issue that Chrome always check an IO device or even trying to communicate to server in background process using the Chrome Helper. Hmmmm... something is going wrong on the new chrome updates with helper. As a software engineer, I noticed that the process trying to access an IO and cached some of the information and that both consume CPU when accessing an IO and caching consume memory.... not very good at all... Advice to engineer who currently fixing this issue, disable the Chrome Helper that access IO for now... Don't run it in background even if it is not needed. Also, avoid installing Google Hangout if you don't need it runs in background.

Noticed the same thing on my rMBP mid 2014 16GB ram, when watching a video in 1080p on youtube in chrome the cpu load is about 70% (chrome helper using about 40-50% and chrome using 20-30). When watching the same clip in safari the cpu load is about 9%. In a colder than average room my cpu temp is around 50c watching a 1080p video on youtube in safari and about 85-89c when watching in chrome. This needs to be fixed, can't stand safari.

Same here,

playing 1080p youtube videos trains the battery on my rMBP 2013.

After searching the forums I've realized that it must have something to do with the html5 video player so I've had installed a plugin that suppresses the html5 video player and youtube falls back to flash videos. That worked for a few months, cpu usage was going down roughly from 80% to 20%. But now with all these flash security holes it feels bad at all to use the flash player. ... Coming back here with the expectation that this got fixed in between I'm really disappointed that there is STILL no progress :(

By the way ... Opera, which uses a similar render engine and looks quite similar run with a cpu usage of 17% vs 80% Chrome!

I am still having this issue almost evert single day with my MacBook Pro 2011. I am running Mavericks, but had this issue with Mountain Lion as well.

Sometimes even happens when I only have 1 or 2 tabs open. Any site using Shockwave seems to increase the problem. My only extensions being used are:

Colorzilla
Bootstrap Grid
Google Ads opt out
Panda News

I have disabled all of these, still hasn't changed anything.

I have been suffering the same problem for a long time now.

I tried Chrome Canary and found it was better to a degree... but over the past few days Canary Chrome has become unbearable where it is crashing any site using flash or shockwave within 5 - 15 minutes of use.

After some research I decided to try Chromium Version 40.0.2214.111 - apparently it is the open source browser that Google Chrome is based on (which I am sure most of you know).

I have tried it now for several hours and it has not crashed once. So far it appears to not have any of the issues the Google version has.

I do not use any extensions at all in Canary Chrome or the standard Google Chrome - but both of these are unusable on my 2013 iMac.

I use mavericks - and so far I am quite impressed with the shift to Chromium. Fast, Light, Low memory usage and for me most importantly it does not crash.

Has anyone else found Chromium better?

Hi Guys,
I have the same problem with newest MBP 15'', Yosemite and Chrome. My wife older MBP do not have this problem so it start making me thinking about that.
After some research I remembered that I always switch from Chrome Flash plugin to Adobe standalone plugin. You can follow: http://www.ghacks.net/2012/09/16/fix-the-chrome-shockwave-flash-plugin-problem/
I did disabled Flash plugin in Chrome, installed Adobe Flash and enabled local plugin in chrome. The Chrome Helper (flash process) dropped from 80% of one CPU to 30%.
I don't think it is full solution but should work for time being.
Regards
Michal

Just want to add my thanks for the Canary rec. It seems to have all the benefits of regular Chrome without the huge drain on resources.

Yes exactly! You may also use Chrome dev version.

I'm using Chrome Version 42.0.2311.4 dev (64-bit) on iMac (27", Late 2009) running Yosemite 10.10.2.

Occasionally the fan on my iMac starts spinning like crazy. Checking the Activity Monitor shows that I have several Google Chrome Helper processes running in parallel, one of which has CPU usage above 100%.

I don't think the problem is due to Flash because I've disabled all plugins.

Launching Google's Task Manager, I noticed that CPU is consistently above 100 when I scroll inside a G+ tab. Scrolling a web page sets the CPU very high.

I've also had problems where scrolling would freeze. This doesn't happen just in Chrome, Firefox too! So it could be a Yosemite bug.

Hey Guys!

So the google Chrome Helped taking up too much CPU power is something that the Chrome team is constantly working on, there's no fix but it's something thats being worked on.

I got this solution from an Apple Forum post to help reduce CPU power usage:

"If you open the Activity Monitor and see that a process called "google chrome helper" is using too much CPU, here's how I fixed it: I went to Chrome settings/content settings/Plugins and selected Click To Play for all plugins. (The default is Run Automatically.)"

Hope that helps!

Happy interneting :)
