When I click on "Enable remote connections," and enter a PIN, I invariably get a "failed to start remote access service" error, and I'm returned to the two options of remote assistance (which seems to work fine) and enabling remote connections, which gives me the error described above.
I've searched for this problem but haven't found it attested. Any solutions?

Try using signing out of the page and then sign in again. no guarantees though.

I just found this in trouble shooting tips:
You can't configure a Windows XP, OS X 10.5 (Leopard), Linux, or Chrome OS machine for remote access.
This is an intentional restriction of the BETA release. Sharing your computer for remote access requires Windows Vista or higher or Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or higher. However, you can access a computer remotely from any device that runs Chrome.

I tried disbling my antivirus, and I'm running Vista. I get the same error. I have tried signing out and in again, to no avail.

Thanks ToOLs_PL, but that's not my problem - I am logged into Vista as the administrator and even tried shutting down Chrome and re-starting as Administrator (right-click, run as administrator).
I get the User Account Control prompt when I don't "run as administrator", followed by the error message I posted earlier. Obviously, I get no prompt whilst running Chrome as administrator, but the error persists. I don't suppose it has anything to do with my OS being 64-bit?
I guess I'll wait for the update and see if anything happens. Thank you for linking to the bug report. It says "Status: Fixed 6 days ago". How soon can we expect to see the fix in Chrome? I'm uncertain how the revisions work in Chromium/Chrome.

JonathanF, I also have 64-bit OS (Windows 7) so it's probably not the cause. Unfortunately I don't know when the fix will be released. But try something else ... open "Services" dialog (as administrator) and check if the "Chrome Remote Desktop Service" is started. In case it's not started start it manually and then try to enable remote connections in Chrome.

I have un-installed and re-installed the plug-in, but I still have the same error message. I also disabled my antivirus and firewall to ensure that the problem is not there.

Hi, let's check a few things and go from there.
First, click Start, and in the Search box type: %ProgramData%\Google\Chrome Remote Desktop then hit Enter. Is there anything in this directory?
Then, hit ctrl alt del and open up the Task Manager. Go to services, and see if you see anything with the word "remoting" in it. If so, let me know the exact name or names that show up
Then, click Start, and in the Search box type: %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Google\Chrome Remote Desktop then hit Enter. Do you have anything in this directory? If so, what are the files you have?

C:\ProgramData\Google\ does not have a subdirectory by the name of "Chrome Remote Desktop". Just "Custom Buttons" and "Google Toolbar".
Task Manger => Services only yields the RemoteAccess and RemoteRegistry, not what you are looking for I believe? They're both stopped and are from the groups netsvcs and regsvc, respectively.
Program Files (x86)\Google\ does not have a subdirectory called Chrome Remote Desktop (though several other extensions that I have installed are there.
It appears as if the extension did not install correctly, though I don't see any reason why not. I just opened Chrome again and got this error message: "Your profile could not be opened correctly. Some features may be unavailable. Please check that the profile exists and you have permission to read and write its contents." I don't know if it's related or not, but I figured I'd mention it here in case.
I just restarted Chrome as Administrator (right-click, run as admin), and uninstalled and re-installed Chrome Remote Desktop BETA, but it's still not working (same error message) and the folders and service(s) are still missing.

OK, JonathanF, there is a way to download the host file directly. Try accessing the file through this link:
After downloading, install the file. This should install the Host, and if you go back to the application, you should be able to enable remote connections.

hello anolley, I have tried and checked everything on this thread and I am still getting the error. I am administrator on my Win 7 system. Running Chrome 19.0.1084.56. I do not have Chrome Remote Desktop directory in ProgramData or Program Files. Under services I have RemoteAccess, it is stopped but when I try to start it I get The Operation Could Not Be Completed. Access is Denied.

I'd also add: delete any previous version of Chrome Remote from Chrome first. I don't know if that's necessary or not (anolley would), but I did. And like they said, right-click and Run as Administrator. I think I may have restarted Chrome afterwards too. At very least I signed out and back into Chrome Remote Desktop.

Done, still not working. One thing I did notice is I do not have the google icon showing up in my system tray at the bottom right. I notice others have it and it is working for them.

Hi, sorry, since you both posted at the same time, my guidance is intended for both of you. So if you downloaded this file and ran it, but it does not show up in programs and features, then that means it is not being installed at all. A lot of the time if this occurs, that means there is some kind of administrative rights issue. On your computer, is your login the only login on that computer? If there is another login, can you try logging in to that username and then right clicking, then running as administrator?

I had the exact same issue, and followed the steps in this thread. I took a look at the log file and saw a reference to the windows firewall. Light went on in my head since we keep windows firewall disabled in our organization. I enabled firewall and everything installed fine. Could be the issue for others as well.

Hello mccannam, it looks like we have an issue with our firewall exception, such that if your firewall is turned OFF, then the host install file we had you download will not install properly. Can you try turning your firewall on, then install that host file again?

Yeah I have even though it was the first time yesterday on two of my laptops and a third today so I don't think the version matters.. On the only machine that it works on I saw the host install but it didn't start on the other two.. Do you want any logs? The msi file would be great but it doesn't help you finding out what went wrong.. (I work part time testing out packages so I know a few things about how important logs can be) :-)

I know this is an old topic now but I have a fix for anyone who is having this error message. Basically the Google Update Service has been disabled on the PC you are trying to allow access to.
I had changed my boot up sequence (as many users do) to disable unimportant programs from running at startup. One of them was Google Update Service...
Fixed it by going into MSconfig from the start menu, then re-checking the Google Update Services. Reboot then try to allow remote access aagain.

Same problem here. On Windows Vista, I was NEVER prompted to install the Chrome Remote Desktop Host, and no amount of installs/re-installs, browser restarts with elevated privileges etc. No joy.
On my iMac, by contrast, I was prompted to download the .dmg image immediately.
It be nice to get this working, as I want to use the Mac to access the Windows machine... all I need is a way to download the .msi "Chrome Remote Desktop Host" and I'd be set. However, the links above are outdated, and otherwise, if the app doesn't download it for you, you're screwed.

Since installation worked as advertised on my iMac, I didn't need the dmg file (also available from the link above); I needed the msi file @ http://dl.google.com/dl/chrome-remote-desktop/chromeremotedesktophost.msi
I downloaded this to my Desktop, and tried the double-click install method, but encountered an error (firewall, I think). Then I opened an elevated command prompt (via right-clicking and selecting "Run as Administrator"), navigated to my Desktop
and tried to install it with the usual \i option. This too failed.
What DID work was installing it with the \a option (short for "administrator"):
It installed without hitch, and I am happily typing this reply remoting from my iMac into my Windows Vista machine. :)
P.S. I'm a software developer: I knew that the problem was just that the installer's bootstrap (or whatever the hook is) wasn't picking up the remote desktop host. Glad I finally turned up the current download link! :)

The Chrome Remote Desktop is working if I use the Invite option, its the service that runs to just enter a pin that isnt. Its basically saying the account used to install/run isnt an administrator, even though it is.

You'll see this error if you are not an administrator of the host computer. We're investigating solutions to this problem. In the interim, obtain administrative rights to the computer, or log in as another user who has administrative rights, and try again.

Windows Firewall is disabled by group policy
On one PC the remote service installed fine on the other it didn't install (I get 'Failed to start remote access service'. I'm admin on both and running Chrome as Administrator. The same services seem to be running (except the Chrome remote access service).

Chrome Remote Desktop failed to start remote access service
First (in Computer Management) I found the Service was corrupt and not able to start. Under the Name column, where it should have said "Chrome Remote Desktop Service" it said chromeremoting, and under description said file could not be found, with an error code.
This is verified a good download, but you need to tweak to make work.
The downloaded file chromeremotedesktophost.msi MUST be renamed to:
