|Failed to start remote access service||jasoneisan||5/29/12 11:08 PM|
When I click on "Enable remote connections," and enter a PIN, I invariably get a "failed to start remote access service" error, and I'm returned to the two options of remote assistance (which seems to work fine) and enabling remote connections, which gives me the error described above.
I've searched for this problem but haven't found it attested. Any solutions?

Try using signing out of the page and then sign in again. no guarantees though.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||Tickmc||5/30/12 1:48 AM|
I have the same issue. I wonder if it is my virus checker? I shall try disabling it...
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||Tickmc||5/30/12 1:59 AM|
I just found this in trouble shooting tips:
You can't configure a Windows XP, OS X 10.5 (Leopard), Linux, or Chrome OS machine for remote access.
This is an intentional restriction of the BETA release. Sharing your computer for remote access requires Windows Vista or higher or Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or higher. However, you can access a computer remotely from any device that runs Chrome.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||JonathanF.||5/30/12 5:15 AM|
I tried disbling my antivirus, and I'm running Vista. I get the same error. I have tried signing out and in again, to no avail.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||DJansen||5/31/12 6:32 PM|
I have the same issue / Win7
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||Tomasz Olszewski||6/1/12 9:16 AM|
If you are using a "Standard user" account your problem could be related to this issue (which is already fixed but not yet released): http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=129477
Solution that worked for me:
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||JonathanF.||6/1/12 11:11 AM|
Thanks ToOLs_PL, but that's not my problem - I am logged into Vista as the administrator and even tried shutting down Chrome and re-starting as Administrator (right-click, run as administrator).
I get the User Account Control prompt when I don't "run as administrator", followed by the error message I posted earlier. Obviously, I get no prompt whilst running Chrome as administrator, but the error persists. I don't suppose it has anything to do with my OS being 64-bit?
I guess I'll wait for the update and see if anything happens. Thank you for linking to the bug report. It says "Status: Fixed 6 days ago". How soon can we expect to see the fix in Chrome? I'm uncertain how the revisions work in Chromium/Chrome.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||Tomasz Olszewski||6/1/12 1:41 PM|
JonathanF, I also have 64-bit OS (Windows 7) so it's probably not the cause. Unfortunately I don't know when the fix will be released. But try something else ... open "Services" dialog (as administrator) and check if the "Chrome Remote Desktop Service" is started. In case it's not started start it manually and then try to enable remote connections in Chrome.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||JonathanF.||6/1/12 2:00 PM|
ToOLs_PL, thanks. I just checked Services, and Chrome Remote Desktop Service is not even there. I also just tried uninstalling and re-installing Chrome Remote Desktop BETA, to no avail.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||6/4/12 2:31 PM|
Hi, we released a new version that will address some cases of this error. You can try removing the current plugin, then reinstalling it from this link:
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||JonathanF.||6/4/12 3:20 PM|
Thank you anolley,
I have un-installed and re-installed the plug-in, but I still have the same error message. I also disabled my antivirus and firewall to ensure that the problem is not there.
You mentioned that the update addresses some cases of the error. Are you aware of more cases and currently working on them, or should I try to give you more information? Let me know what you need. Thank you!
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||6/4/12 4:09 PM|
Hi, let's check a few things and go from there.
First, click Start, and in the Search box type: %ProgramData%\Google\Chrome Remote Desktop then hit Enter. Is there anything in this directory?
Then, hit ctrl alt del and open up the Task Manager. Go to services, and see if you see anything with the word "remoting" in it. If so, let me know the exact name or names that show up
Then, click Start, and in the Search box type: %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Google\Chrome Remote Desktop then hit Enter. Do you have anything in this directory? If so, what are the files you have?
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||JonathanF.||6/4/12 6:09 PM|
Thank you, anolley. Here are the results:
C:\ProgramData\Google\ does not have a subdirectory by the name of "Chrome Remote Desktop". Just "Custom Buttons" and "Google Toolbar".
Task Manger => Services only yields the RemoteAccess and RemoteRegistry, not what you are looking for I believe? They're both stopped and are from the groups netsvcs and regsvc, respectively.
Program Files (x86)\Google\ does not have a subdirectory called Chrome Remote Desktop (though several other extensions that I have installed are there.
It appears as if the extension did not install correctly, though I don't see any reason why not. I just opened Chrome again and got this error message: "Your profile could not be opened correctly. Some features may be unavailable. Please check that the profile exists and you have permission to read and write its contents." I don't know if it's related or not, but I figured I'd mention it here in case.
I just restarted Chrome as Administrator (right-click, run as admin), and uninstalled and re-installed Chrome Remote Desktop BETA, but it's still not working (same error message) and the folders and service(s) are still missing.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||6/5/12 11:26 AM|
OK, JonathanF, there is a way to download the host file directly. Try accessing the file through this link:
After downloading, install the file. This should install the Host, and if you go back to the application, you should be able to enable remote connections.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||JonathanF.||6/5/12 11:48 AM|
Thank you, anolley. It is functioning normally now. I'm curious why I had to do that and Chrome didn't do it automatically. Will updates work OK do you think?
If you want any more information from my side, please feel free to contact me. I'll tell you anything to avoid others having the same issue. Again, many thanks! :)
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||6/5/12 11:50 AM|
You are very welcome JonathanF. I am glad to help. We are actually investigating the issue. But updates should work just fine. Feel free to post here again if you have any further issues.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||mccannam||6/12/12 3:52 PM|
hello anolley, I have tried and checked everything on this thread and I am still getting the error. I am administrator on my Win 7 system. Running Chrome 19.0.1084.56. I installed the host file from the link your provided but still get the same "failed to start remote access service" error. Any help is appreciated.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||AroSwift||6/12/12 6:09 PM|
I get the same problem too and I am running a win 7. I have tried all the suggested fixes/patches, but to no avail. I am in the same pickle that mccannam is in. Please, someone fix this some!
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||6/13/12 11:00 AM|
Hi mccannam, can you check the same items I had JonathanF check?
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||mccannam||6/13/12 11:24 AM|
I do not have Chrome Remote Desktop directory in ProgramData or Program Files. Under services I have RemoteAccess, it is stopped but when I try to start it I get The Operation Could Not Be Completed. Access is Denied.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||6/13/12 3:57 PM|
Hi, can you try downloading the host file again, then when its done downloading, right click on it and Run as Administrator. Let me know how that works.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||JonathanF.||6/13/12 4:55 PM|
I'd also add: delete any previous version of Chrome Remote from Chrome first. I don't know if that's necessary or not (anolley would), but I did. And like they said, right-click and Run as Administrator. I think I may have restarted Chrome afterwards too. At very least I signed out and back into Chrome Remote Desktop.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||mccannam||6/13/12 4:59 PM|
Done, still not working. One thing I did notice is I do not have the google icon showing up in my system tray at the bottom right. I notice others have it and it is working for them.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||6/13/12 5:17 PM|
When you go to Programs and Features, do you see Chrome Remote Desktop listed as a program that you can remove?
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||AroSwift||6/13/12 6:00 PM|
Not that I am really in this discussion or that my option would really matter, but no I don't see Chrome Remote Desktop as on of the programs that is able to be removed.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||mccannam||6/14/12 9:47 AM|
No, I do not see Chrome Remote Desktop listed as a program either.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||6/14/12 10:22 AM|
Hi, sorry, since you both posted at the same time, my guidance is intended for both of you. So if you downloaded this file and ran it, but it does not show up in programs and features, then that means it is not being installed at all. A lot of the time if this occurs, that means there is some kind of administrative rights issue. On your computer, is your login the only login on that computer? If there is another login, can you try logging in to that username and then right clicking, then running as administrator?
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||6/14/12 10:42 AM|
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||AroSwift||6/14/12 11:20 AM|
No, I only have one login for my computer. I greatly appreciated your diligence in helping us.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||6/14/12 12:45 PM|
Hi AroSwift (and mccannam), let's try this in order to collect a log file of the installation attempt.
1)Download the host .MSI:
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||mccannam||6/14/12 1:48 PM|
Just sent the log file. Happy hunting :)
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||Ben.Woof||6/14/12 2:06 PM|
I had the exact same issue, and followed the steps in this thread. I took a look at the log file and saw a reference to the windows firewall. Light went on in my head since we keep windows firewall disabled in our organization. I enabled firewall and everything installed fine. Could be the issue for others as well.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||6/14/12 3:33 PM|
Thanks Ben. That confirms our suspicions. Much appreciated!
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||6/14/12 3:34 PM|
Hello mccannam, it looks like we have an issue with our firewall exception, such that if your firewall is turned OFF, then the host install file we had you download will not install properly. Can you try turning your firewall on, then install that host file again?
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||6/14/12 3:35 PM|
Hello AroSwift, can you try turning your firewall on, then manually installing the host file I had you download?
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||AroSwift||6/14/12 4:27 PM|
My firewall my be the problem since it has this error on it whenever I try to allow a program through.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||jeff.how||7/12/12 9:15 AM|
Is the host msi file still available for download? The above link did not work. I am experiencing the same problem and want to try this fix.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||Thyg0d||7/15/12 4:36 AM|
+1 on the msi file...
Works on one of my laptops but not the other...
It never installed the host package...
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||7/16/12 10:21 AM|
Hello, Jeff and Thyg0d, have you tried removing the plugin, then installing it again? This problem occurred with a previous version, and should be fixed in the current version. If this does not work, let me know, and I can add the msi file for you.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||Thyg0d||7/16/12 11:17 AM|
Yeah I have even though it was the first time yesterday on two of my laptops and a third today so I don't think the version matters.. On the only machine that it works on I saw the host install but it didn't start on the other two.. Do you want any logs? The msi file would be great but it doesn't help you finding out what went wrong.. (I work part time testing out packages so I know a few things about how important logs can be) :-)
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||jeff.how||7/16/12 1:42 PM|
Thanks for the reply, removing and reinstalling the plugin did not work for me either.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||7/18/12 2:53 PM|
Hello Thyg0d, sorry for the late reply. I appreciate your patience and willingness to spend time collecting a log file. If downloading the host installation file works, then we will not need to collect a log. To collect a log file of the installation attempt:
1)Download the host .MSI:
4)From this directory, type this: msiexec /l*vx setup.log /i chromeremotedesktophost-1.5.1132.36.msi
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||7/18/12 2:54 PM|
After installing the browser plugin, can you try downloading the latest host installation file, and see if that works? You can download from this link:
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||jeff.how||7/18/12 3:03 PM|
Yes, that worked. I sent in the log file as well. Thanks for your help with this.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||Thyg0d||7/18/12 3:21 PM|
Worked like a charm and the logfile is sent to you.. Let me know if it doesn't show up!
Thanks a lot for your help!
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||7/18/12 3:40 PM|
Excellent! I am glad I could help.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||anolley||7/18/12 4:27 PM|
You are welcome. I am glad you are up and running!
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||pmmcdonald||7/21/12 9:39 PM|
I keep getting the failed to start error. I tried everything in this thread. I've attached setup.log. Any help would be great.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||HIKMAT SEYIDOV||8/31/12 4:30 AM|
YES SOME WINDOWS VERSION DOES NOT SUPPORT REMOTE ACCESS

|Re: Failed to start remote access service||JAWSSurfer||10/31/12 10:39 AM|
I know this is an old topic now but I have a fix for anyone who is having this error message. Basically the Google Update Service has been disabled on the PC you are trying to allow access to.
I had changed my boot up sequence (as many users do) to disable unimportant programs from running at startup. One of them was Google Update Service...
Fixed it by going into MSconfig from the start menu, then re-checking the Google Update Services. Reboot then try to allow remote access aagain.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||veamon||11/6/12 4:41 PM|
This doesnt work. Its not even listed.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||mrrena||11/8/12 11:36 PM|
Same problem here. On Windows Vista, I was NEVER prompted to install the Chrome Remote Desktop Host, and no amount of installs/re-installs, browser restarts with elevated privileges etc. No joy.
On my iMac, by contrast, I was prompted to download the .dmg image immediately.
It be nice to get this working, as I want to use the Mac to access the Windows machine... all I need is a way to download the .msi "Chrome Remote Desktop Host" and I'd be set. However, the links above are outdated, and otherwise, if the app doesn't download it for you, you're screwed.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||mrrena||11/9/12 12:04 AM|
To follow-up on my own comment, I finally found enough of the download link to Google for what I needed. My answer came from http://productforums.google.com/d/msg/chrome/_SV_6pZiW1A/Bn2gE6GrZhwJ
Since installation worked as advertised on my iMac, I didn't need the dmg file (also available from the link above); I needed the msi file @ http://dl.google.com/dl/chrome-remote-desktop/chromeremotedesktophost.msi
I downloaded this to my Desktop, and tried the double-click install method, but encountered an error (firewall, I think). Then I opened an elevated command prompt (via right-clicking and selecting "Run as Administrator"), navigated to my Desktop
and tried to install it with the usual \i option. This too failed.
What DID work was installing it with the \a option (short for "administrator"):
It installed without hitch, and I am happily typing this reply remoting from my iMac into my Windows Vista machine. :)
P.S. I'm a software developer: I knew that the problem was just that the installer's bootstrap (or whatever the hook is) wasn't picking up the remote desktop host. Glad I finally turned up the current download link! :)
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||mrrena||11/9/12 12:07 AM|
Sorry, my copy/paste failed me and we can't edit our replies; instead of having the full URL, that SHOULD have read...
msiexec \a chromeremotedesktophost.msi
when cd'ed into the directory where the msi file was downloaded. Otherwise, the path after the "\a" would be the full path to the file.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||veamon||11/9/12 6:13 AM|
This doesnt work either.
The Chrome Remote Desktop is working if I use the Invite option, its the service that runs to just enter a pin that isnt. Its basically saying the account used to install/run isnt an administrator, even though it is.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||Zaeem Shoaib||11/23/12 2:34 AM|
I'm trying to use Chrome Remote Desktop on Windows 8, but it just says that it "Failed to start remote access service"
How do I fix this?
It ran perfectly on Win 7...
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||Reel Hawkins||1/13/13 6:53 AM|
You'll see this error if you are not an administrator of the host computer. We're investigating solutions to this problem. In the interim, obtain administrative rights to the computer, or log in as another user who has administrative rights, and try again.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||veamon||1/13/13 6:59 AM|
No, thats not it, I'm the Administrator on mine, and its not starting. Its a Google error
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||Deben Bhattarai||1/24/13 1:25 PM|
I was facing the same error... but after starting "Google Updater Service" issue got resolved
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||pgupta||2/6/13 10:10 PM|
this reply works perfectly
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||Changyin Zhou||2/10/13 3:09 PM|
The link is now not working. Can you update the link? thanks. I got the same problem with chrome remote desktop.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||pellisuk||3/19/13 8:22 AM|
I have two Win 7 PCs running Chrome Version 25.0.1364.172 m
Windows Firewall is disabled by group policy
On one PC the remote service installed fine on the other it didn't install (I get 'Failed to start remote access service'. I'm admin on both and running Chrome as Administrator. The same services seem to be running (except the Chrome remote access service).
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||adamwilliams512||5/15/13 3:54 PM|
Here's a simple fix that worked for me:
1. Close all your Chrome windows
You should now be up and running!
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||Billy Zimmerman||5/23/13 8:48 PM|
Chrome Remote Desktop failed to start remote access service
First (in Computer Management) I found the Service was corrupt and not able to start. Under the Name column, where it should have said "Chrome Remote Desktop Service" it said chromeremoting, and under description said file could not be found, with an error code.
This is verified a good download, but you need to tweak to make work.
The downloaded file chromeremotedesktophost.msi MUST be renamed to:
I hope it resolves yours as well.
|Re: Failed to start remote access service||tracy morton||6/13/13 7:56 PM|
This worked for me when none of the others worked. Thanks Billy!
