| Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | LaurenB42 | 20/07/16 20:01 | I accidentally quit Chrome and when I reopened it, the tabs were in a larger, different font and boxier. The gray across the top was lighter, the back/forward arrows look different and the three horizontal bars on the right are now 3 vertical dots. The drop down URL bar of suggested sites as I'm typing is a new font and color as well. It doesn't look as smooth, I hate it and I'd like it back, but I have no idea what happened. I tried uninstalling Chrome, resetting the browser and signing in and out. Nothing worked. I'm on a MacBook Air, using El Capitan 10.11.5. The only extensions I have installed are Google ones (Docs, Docs Offiline, Sheets and Slides). I'm attaching a screenshot. In comparison, this is what it looked like before. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | MikeMobley2002 | 20/07/16 20:50 | Agreed. This looks very ugly. Any fix? |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | Daniel Pritts | 21/07/16 07:45 | what happened is that yout got an automatic update, and the new version has this new ugly appearance. I suspect they did it on purpose so that chrome looks the same on all platforms. Maybe it's time to switch to safari. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | Stephen2802 | 21/07/16 08:07 | Yeah this is happening to me accept the search bar when the results come down in the list. Its black, Also i think it screwed up my Adblock because the icon is screwed up Its also a little slower now. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | LaurenB42 | 21/07/16 08:57 | Ugh, it stinks this seems purposeful. It looks really bad, like I'm using the wrong screen aspect ratio or something. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | Johnny - Community Specialist | 21/07/16 11:10 | Hey, Thanks for posting in the Google Chrome Help Forum! Are you facing this issue on Chrome Beta? If yes, please check if the issue persists on Chrome Stable. If it does, this seems to be a part of the new Chrome Update. I'd appreciate your feedback about the same using steps from this help article. In the meantime, please give these steps a try to see if they make a difference:
If the issue persists, download and run Chrome Canary. It is the cutting edge developer version of Chrome that can be installed alongside Stable Chrome. It's possible the problem won't exist on a future version. Keep me posted. Best, Johnny |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | Ash Reedy | 22/07/16 09:19 | Edit: Found the solution! Go to chrome://flags/#top-chrome-md and set it to "Non-material". I would really love for a way to change the size of the font. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | Tony Dark | 22/07/16 09:45 | Happened to me on my Mac as well. The new theme is absolutely horrible. Probably switching to Firefox or something if this isn't quickly resolved. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | Johnny - Community Specialist | 22/07/16 09:58 | Thanks for pitching in! This seems to be an intended behavior on the latest version of Chrome. In the meantime, please check if trying the steps suggested from my previous post help.

| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | relicpro | 23/07/16 22:31 | Thanks Ash Reedy. Worked like a charm. That other design with the bigger fonts and tabs looked really clunky. For a second when Chrome relaunched with the update, I thought my screen resolution somehow automatically got lowered, since everything was bigger. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | MikeMobley2002 | 24/07/16 07:10 | Are there similar instructions to change the look for Chrome for Mac? Would LOVE for the appearance to go back to what it was on the Mac for Chrome. Thank you. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | Johnny - Community Specialist | 25/07/16 09:19 | Thanks for pitching in! Are you referring to the issue now being fixed? If not, please give suggestions from my previous posts, including the useful suggestions from @Ash Reedy a try to see if they help.

| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | Anis Mg | 27/07/16 07:57 | Hi Johnny, you should report this Non-Material flag option to the Design team cause it's very Ugly and amateurish , and thanks @Ash for posting the solution. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | Johnny - Community Specialist | 27/07/16 08:59 | Thanks for posting back! I'll keep them posted from my end. In the meantime, I'd appreciate your feedback through the steps from this help article. Do let me know if you have any more questions. Best, Johnny |

| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | sarjoor | 02/08/16 12:25 | Hi Everyone, Regarding the new Chrome UI, the new buttons, angular tabs, grey colored bookmark folders and three vertical dots menu are part of the new Material Design UI that has rolled out for Macs in Chrome 52. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | beglitched | 17/08/16 14:13 | Ash Reedy Thank you!! That worked. This has been bothering me! |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | relicpro | 10/09/16 09:33 | Oh boo... this "Non-material" fix stopped working with the v53 update. Anybody got any other suggestions? Still not a fan of those big fonts/tabs... |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | Anis Mg | 14/09/16 05:58 | still workin for me on 53 with flag --top-chrome-md=non-material /Applications/Google Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google Chrome --flag-switches-begin --no-pings --top-chrome-md=non-material --flag-switches-end |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | relicpro | 14/09/16 10:02 | Ah, to be more accurate, it's just the font size in the tabs that stopped working for me with the 53 update. The tabs themselves are still the old smaller style. Everything else, the menu bar, the bookmarks bar, the settings icon are still the old style and smaller font size. Those big fonts threw me off. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | TheSniper9752 | 18/09/16 11:41 | fucking windows 95 looked better than this shit. Google can't stop fucking things up can't they? |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | Steve Parry | 19/09/16 07:09 | Thanks, Ash. When I first saw the change, I thought it was a virus or spyware or something, especially with that stupid info icon at the beginning of the address bar. The last time it happened, about two days ago, I reset the laptop to a previous date, but when it happened again I was determined to track down the cause. Apparently it's just a stupid bloody chrome thing. Why did we not have a choice; or at least a fucking warning that it was going to happen? So once again, thanks for helping me get back to bloody normal. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | Vlad Draq | 19/09/16 12:47 | The tabs are so super-ugly, I don't want to look at them. I can sense UX-people's handiwork there, oh man. Hopefully there's a classic skin or something available. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | jwest2065 | 19/09/16 15:13 | FIX the tab size for cripes sake, and let me adjust size of url line again. I can't adjust to show all my active extensions. I'll deal with / adjust font size, and color changes. The disproportionate size of the huge tabs and tiny fonts is SO distracting. Doesn't google "get" the huge impact to productivity when users have to deal with unexpected visual changes. |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | RooRunner | 19/09/16 20:14 | I'm so excited that you figured out how to fix this! It was driving me c-r-a-z-y! If I could mark you as having the best answer, I would! My beloved Chrome view is back. What on earth was Google thinking with this update??!! Thank you, thank you Ash Reedy! :) |
| Re: Chrome suddenly changed fonts and tab style | Sandman366 | 20/09/16 12:53 | The "Find" box (f3 or ctrl-f) is also now unbelievably fugly. Used to look like part of the UI, and now it looks like a completely white text box that doesn't care AT ALL what color schemes you like. (Seriously, I have a mostly black theme, my Aero is all very dark, and find box used to look like it was part of something. Now? It sticks out like an elephant in a chicken coop. Also it doesn't go red for no results on the 0/0 anymore.) Seems to be like it was changed around the same time. Is this also "intended behavior"? To make things look worse? (Tabs looking fuzzy, I'll deal with. Font shrinking I may learn to deal with. This find bar however is just ugly and doesn't mesh at all in any way.) |
