21/05-2014 Ubuntu 14.04 - IcedTea doesn't work in Chrome anymore? Ilannguaq Kivioq 21/05/14 02:33
Hey there...

Today's date is 21st of May, 2014

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 on my computer, on which I use Google Chrome... I found out yesterday, that my IcedTea Java plugin has disappeared from the browser? Tried reinstalling IcedTea with no luck. IcedTea works fine in Firefox.

Anyone knows why? Is IcedTea not available for Chrome anymore, and do I need to install Oracle's Java instead?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Regards,
Ilannguaq

NPAPI was dropped for Linux in 35 because of Aura. IcedTea and Oracle both use NPAPI, so it won't work until they are upgraded to the new system (don't expect that any time soon)

The same. I need icedtea plugin in my work as a teacher. All these improves in 35 version are nothing for me. I downgraded to 34 version and bloked updates. Or in a more easy way, return to Firefox

Okay, I have no idea what NPAPI is, but I will research the subject, but anyhow, thanks for Your reply.... :-)

Oracle's Java plugin is working fine in Chrome 35 in Windows though..? Is Oracle's Java not using NPAPI for Chrome Java plugin...?

@Ilannguaq Kivioq

Google plans to drop Java support in Chrome for Windows in the near future they have said.

Where and when did they say that?  There are a lot of sites that simply don't work without Java, such as chess.com

http://www.infoq.com/news/2013/09/NPAPI-Depricated

They have already dropped it in Chrome for Linux and Mac, Windows users got a reprieve until the next Chrome release but that will be soon.  They consider Java a security issue.
