Hi Nathan_d and Bescki,

Do you see any errors listed when you type chrome://sync into the Omnibox?  Are you running an official version of ICS or a custom ROM?
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Nathan_d 5/29/12 10:57 AM
no errors, only
Error Type        SYNC_SUCCESS

I'm using a custom rom.

is there any backup on google servers?

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android JL King 5/29/12 11:25 AM
  1. Were you already signed in to Chrome on your laptops when you first signed in to Chrome for Android Beta?
  2. From Chrome desktop, under chrome://sync/, select the "Sync Node Browser" tab at the top.  Expand the "Root" folder and find the Bookmarks folder. Are your bookmarks correctly listed there?
  3. When you go to the Chrome Sync section of the Google Dashboard, are your bookmarks counted correctly?
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Nathan_d 5/29/12 12:18 PM
1. I was logged in my pc
2. no.
3. no again, showing only 9 bookmarks instead of few hundreds
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android JL King 5/29/12 3:30 PM
I've just sent you an email to troubleshoot with you further.

I got the same problem!!! any help?
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Bescki 5/29/12 6:32 PM
whAT email? I think google can restore it, but how to contact them :(
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android KR_Shard 5/29/12 8:09 PM
Google probably can't "restore" your data, since it seems to be gone from their servers. Another user posted this in another thread, which could be worth a shot:

"...there may be a chance that you could recover it from your Bookmarks.bak file:

If you're on Vista/7, go to C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\Chrome\User Data\Default
On XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<your_username>\Local Settings\Chrome\User Data\Default

(You have to have Hide Folders disabled to see the AppData and Local Settings folders). If you see a "Bookmarks.bak" file there...Backup your "Bookmarks" file somewhere, or rename it first. Then rename the "Bookmarks.bak" file to "Bookmarks", and Chrome might just use the older file which could contain your deleted bookmark(s)."

At this point it can't hurt so I'd try it.

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android jzuniga 5/30/12 8:50 AM
I tried %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\default
and the bookmarks.bak is the same as the original so no solution there.. guess I'm quitting chrome because of this.. what a shame!! never thougth this would happen, so I never made a backup file whith all my bookmarks. increrible lost of information!! thanx google.
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android JL King 6/6/12 1:01 PM
Hi folks,

We're still investigating this issue, and believe it to be actually related to a bug in Android Browser's sync. To help us confirm and further investigate this, some questions:
  1. Are you signed in to Chrome on your desktop and mobile device?
  2. Are you using the Android "Browser" with sync to the same Google Account that you have with Chrome?
  3. If so, what version of Android do you have? (Settings > About Phone/Tablet > Android version & Build number)
  4. Did you notice this issue immediately upon installing Chrome for Android and signing in, or was it much later? Or, are you experiencing this issue but did not recently install Chrome (i.e. you were already using it before you experienced this issue)?
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android JL King 6/6/12 6:49 PM
@jzuniga - How many bookmarks do you see listed on Chrome for Android right now?
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Nathan_d 6/7/12 10:22 AM
1. yes
2. same account
3. ICS 4.0.3
   build number - pilotx-Firefds.V5.1.IML74K.XWLPD
4. immediately after installing on android and signing in.

is there a way to bring back my priceless bookmarks?

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Darryl_W 6/9/12 9:23 PM
1. Yes. 2 Macs, 2 PC's
2. Do not use stock Android browser. Installed Chrome beta upon unboxing
3.ICS 4.0.4
4.Build IMM76D.T999VVLALE6.DM

Please help! I have full project folders I need to access now. Years of work and research

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android JL King 6/10/12 9:26 PM
Hi Darryl_W,

Are you using any sort of bookmarks manager, such as a third-party app or extension?
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Darryl_W 6/11/12 4:45 AM
Nope just chrome. I was able to recover by bookmark
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Darryl_W 6/11/12 4:49 AM
Nope just chrome. I got my bookmarks back. Unplugged the internet on a computer that I hand't synced yet then I backed up to html file. Whew!
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android enekho 6/11/12 11:43 AM
I lost my bookmarks today. Same issue, I just updated the rom I was using on my android phone and bam, all my bookmarks are gone. Using a sgs2 with a custom rom (wanamlite) based on 4.0.3 ics xwlpg. Using chrome on mobile phone too, but I didn't open it. I just flashed the new rom and all my bookmarks were gone after that in my laptop.

I'm not using any extension that messes with bookmarks. Just adblock and gmail notifier.

Thanks a lot, any help would be really appreciated.

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android enekho 6/11/12 11:47 AM
Are you signed in to Chrome on your desktop and mobile device?
 - Signed in both

Are you using the Android "Browser" with sync to the same Google Account that you have with Chrome?
 - Yes, Android chrome, but I hadn't opened it and bookmarks disappeared.

If so, what version of Android do you have? (Settings > About Phone/Tablet > Android version & Build number)
-4.0.3 build IML74K.XWLPG

Did you notice this issue immediately upon installing Chrome for Android and signing in, or was it much later? Or, are you experiencing this issue but did not recently install Chrome (i.e. you were already using it before you experienced this issue)?

- Noticed it immediatley after flashing this rom, and placing my pin on phone. I had my laptop opened, was using it, reading stuff on the web, then I check the bar and I had no bookmarks.

Thanks and sorry for the double reply

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android gsal99 6/18/12 9:18 AM
Same for me. Opened Chrome to find all my bookmarks, addons, and settings gone. That is a LOT of work...

I will be using Firefox from now on.

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android J Beas 6/19/12 10:10 AM
I lost all of my bookmarks last Friday. Hundreds if not thousands going back over the span of a few years. Almost made me sick. bookmarks.bak is same as the original as others have posted.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. ICS 4.0.4, build Liquid Linaro v1.5 RC
4. I don't think I ever signed into Chrome on my phone. I had used it in the past but deleted it but I did notice the market restored it when I re-flashed my phone. I did not open Chrome on my phone before I deleted it this time around.

I am not using any kind of bookmark managers, apps or extensions on my desktop or phone. Please help.

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android J Beas 6/19/12 10:40 AM
SOLVED! If you have Windows Backup on your computer, find the backup.bak file at:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\default

Right click -> "Restore previous versions" then follow the steps here:

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android JL King 6/19/12 11:22 AM
This issue is caused by a bug in Android's "Browser", which does interact with Chrome's Sync, and seems to be wrongly deleting bookmark data for a small subset of users. We are working on a fix.
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android rajivjain.i 6/19/12 3:41 PM
Is there a work around to recover the bookmarks? I lost mine when I did a factory reset on my phone with Chrome installed.
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Cool_SJ 6/22/12 4:31 PM
Hey Guy's,
it happend to me as well. If you are using windows 7, if you go to bookmarks.bak and rename and replacing it wont really work. Right click that file and select properties and go to previous versions and copy the previous versions of the file and rename and replace with your existing Bookmarks file and it should work.

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android ableman42 6/22/12 6:15 PM
I just had the same thing happen (hundreds of bookmarks gone).  I just got the new Galaxy 3 S, thinking it was a similar issue as listed above. Thoughts?

Any progress on a solution?

If it matters, my passwords still seem to be saved.

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android OneWing.z 6/25/12 6:05 AM
Same thing here. Changed from OG Evo to SGS3. Haven't downloaded the Chrome beta for Android at all on any device and I made no attempt at syncing any bookmarks to or from anything with the new phone.
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android ableman42 6/25/12 2:05 PM
They magically returned.  I can't be sure but I did recently turn of the automatic syncing options on my phone.

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Benoix 6/28/12 7:49 AM
The same. Galaxy S3, Chrome for Android, all bookmark folders gone. F@#%*ck
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android JL King 6/28/12 8:32 AM
@benoix,

When did they disappear? Are they missing from both Chrome for Android and Chrome on your computer?

We've already fixed the original issue of Android "Browser" initiating server side deletes of sync data, and we are working to restore the data that was lost. Most users that were affected should see bookmarks returning over the next few days.
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Cjack 6/28/12 10:55 AM
They disappeared the second I turned on my new S3 and entered my account info. Any they have not yet begun to re-appear.
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android JL King 6/28/12 11:02 AM
When did you activate your S3 and enter your account information? Weeks ago, days ago, today, etc?
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android wirelessone 6/28/12 9:29 PM
@ JL King:  this happened to me as well.  Just opened Chrome and *poof* 99% of all my bookmarks are gone (odd, ones from the last few days are still there).  You mention that most users will have their's restored in a couple of days.  What if mine are not?  Who can I contact to get this resolved?  I assume you work for Google, so hopefully sharing the correct contact person should be within your grasp.  I did nothing to cause this and I have lost many very important bookmarks as a result of this.  TIA . .
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Cjack 6/29/12 6:42 AM
My apologies...... I received and turned on my S3 at approx, 1:30pm on Tuesday. All bookmarks were in place on Tuesday morning. On Wednesday evening, I noticed that all bookmarks were gone. I have an S3, MBP, and Pantech Element.
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android JL King 6/29/12 10:07 AM
@cjack, to clarify, are you missing your bookmarks in Chrome on your computer, or only your bookmarks in Android "Browser"?
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Cjack 6/29/12 10:18 AM
My Chrome browser on my MBP is missing 99% of bookmarks.
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Culturalsf 6/29/12 11:16 AM
Same issue as everyone else, just got a SGS3 and all my bookmarks are gone.

Does anyone know what the bookmarks file on Chrome for OSX is? I'll try to grab it from my time machine

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android jelamb 6/29/12 12:24 PM
I just got my S3 last night. Just noticed almost all of my laptop's bookmarks are gone now. Odd thing: I set my phone up last night, but I had my bookmarks on my laptop until about 12pm today, when they zapped out of existence. So my phone was set up hours prior to losing my bookmarks. Based on your previous post, should I expect to see my bookmarks come back sometime soon?  Thanks.
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android yiyin7 6/30/12 11:18 AM
Same thing just happened to me this morning.  I synced S3 a few days ago.  This is frustration.  Please restore the bookmarks.
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android WranglerGD 6/30/12 2:51 PM
Well... glad to see that i'm not the only one with this problem. But still angry that i lost 95% of my bookmarks !!
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android ableman42 7/2/12 8:07 AM
Seems they addressed it, although I can't tell if it's because I turned sync off or something with fixed server side...  Can anyone confirm they can sync and still keep their bookmarks?

Sean

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Cjack 7/2/12 8:16 AM
I can confirm that it is NOT fixed. still have not recovered bookmarks
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android indyvw 7/3/12 7:29 AM
Ditto to this. I installed Google Chrome to Android and lost all of my bookmarks stored on folders, lots of important links gone.

Bad sync. Is there anyway to recover this? I fear all that info is gone for good.

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Benoix 7/3/12 7:34 AM
STILL NOT fixed. What are you doing??
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android border43 7/3/12 1:27 PM
I have the same issue. Just got a Bell Samsung Galaxy S III (model SGH-I747M). Running Android 4.0.4. ~50% of my bookmarks are lost. It seems like just the folders for the most part are gone. I had bookmarks on the bar at the top. They are all still there except for the one folder that I had on the bar.

The 3-4 folders I had inside Other Bookmarks are also gone, but from what I can see it looks like most (if not all) of the links that were not in folders are still there. :(

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android clair0415 7/3/12 8:42 PM
Having the same problem. I got my new HTC Evo 4G LTE last week.  I did not and have not installed Chrome - just using the stock browser.  However, today I went into the bookmarks to clear a bunch of stuff out (it seemed to contain a weird combination of standard bookmarks and some that I have bookmarked on my PC via the Neat Bookmarks extension on Chrome).

Logged into Chrome via my laptop and all my bookmarks are gone. On my phone, most of the standard bookmarks (Twitter, Wiki, Facebook, etc.) are still there.  Everything associated with my PC is gone.

Are you signed in to Chrome on your desktop and mobile device?
 - Signed in to Chrome on my desktop.  Signed in to Google on my phone, but using the stock browser (have not downloaded Chrome yet).

Are you using the Android "Browser" with sync to the same Google Account that you have with Chrome?

 - Yes

If so, what version of Android do you have? (Settings > About Phone/Tablet > Android version & Build number)
 - Hardware version 0003 / Software version 1.13.651.1.710RD

Did you notice this issue immediately upon installing Chrome for Android and signing in, or was it much later? Or, are you experiencing this issue but did not recently install Chrome (i.e. you were already using it before you experienced this issue)?

  - I noticed this issue just today.  Chrome for Android has not been installed.  But I have been signed in to Google on my phone since I got it.  This is not my first Android phone, but this is the first time I have had this problem.  I'm assuming it's connected to the fact that I deleted bookmarks on my Android (something I never had a problem with on my old DInc).  The problem occurred after I closed my browser on my desktop and then reopened it later on.

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android CamboM 7/3/12 9:07 PM
Happened awhile ago for me when resetting my phone. Managed to save them though by using my Mac @ work before it could sync! (sign out before it syncs, delete syc data on dashboard, sign back in)

I noticed it happened again today after I reset my SGS2 last night. This time it didn't delete all the bookmarks, just the 20+ bookmarks that were in folders.

So unbelievably frustrating.

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android border43 7/4/12 8:38 AM
I'm almost positive that whatever is happen has something to do with folders like you said, as that is what I lost all of too.

I also realized that I forgot some info in my last post. So:
Got new Android 4.0.4 SGS3 phone. Installed google chrome for Android.
Logged into google Chrome using the same account that I have logged into across all my desktop/laptop browsers.

All bookmark folders are lost.
Looks like maybe a few link bookmarks are lost. But not all. I can't even tell for sure because I can not remember exactly what I had and what I did not have in folders.

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android b33son 7/6/12 11:12 AM
Same here. Samsung Galaxy 3 using Chrome browser deleted all my bookmarks from Google.
Same issue running on my TF300t -- Bookmarks gone after device cold boot brecklundin 7/7/12 11:39 AM
Same issue just happened to me last night or this AM I dunno when exactly.  I'm using ICS 4.03 on an Asus tf300t

All but my Mobile Bookmarks folder just went *poof* from whatever version of the production release of Chrome I am using is.  Last night I updated a few apps and also did a "cold boot" of my TF3000t.  When it came back it seems my bookmarks (desktop bookmarks and a couple other folders) were gone save for that default "mobile bookmarks" folder.

I see over 1400 bookmarks indicated my my Google Dashboard but can't get them to sync on the device.  My difference from others is I am running ONLY on my TF300t currently so there is zero chance I can recover via a backup on my desktop system.

This issue has apparently been present for a long while...can we anticipate a fix shorty?

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Benoix 7/10/12 12:24 PM
So what is happening?
You still couldn't recover our bookmarks?
It s crazy all that, just because of an app that was definitely released too early!!?? (so many people lost their bookmark!)
Please tell me when i will have my bookmarks back. I *need* them.

thanks
B

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Cjack 7/22/12 5:07 PM
Still no update? How is this even possible Google?
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android brecklundin 7/22/12 6:34 PM
Just a heads-up on how my issue is behaving as it might help others in sleuthing this out.

What I have noticed is Chrome seems to be cache ALL of our bookmarks save for mobile on THEIR SERVERS.  What happens on my system is if my connection is slow or otherwise experiencing issues I only see my "mobile" bookmarks.  But once I have a more stable connection or whatever is buggering the Google servers settles down my other bookmarks magically reappear.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS...these are MY BOOKMARKS and not the property of Google to play flipping games with...so Google is indeed "doing harm" to people with these tactics.  I am going to stop using Chrome as my browser simply because under Android I am surrendering control over my data and use of my computer to Google.  Even to the point that my tablet is classified as a "mobile device" even w/o a 3g/4g/EVDO connection (it only has wifi which is no different than my laptops running Win7.

Chrome under Android will never allow us to use extensions suck as Adblock.  Android block system level access to our HOSTS file with is my primary way to combat adware/scumware and meterics tracking sites.  My laptops and desktops have never run any sort of AV or antispyware software due to the custom security I setup on my end.  All of which hinges on access to the file system and system level control.

Sorry but Android is done and is no better than iOS, which is total sheet as well...Android is ONLY a way for Google to collect user metrics and data to sell to the thought-police.

This current behavior of not keeping our bookmarks locally is the final straw for me.  Soon as Win8 Pro is running on a stable device, see ya Android/iOS you are dead to me.  And likely both are dead to advanced users already I simply had hope it would Google would be "better" than Arsehole, errrr, Apple...nope no better and just as bad.

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android JL King 7/24/12 4:03 PM
Hi everyone,

The Android bug was fixed on July 2, preventing any further deletes of bookmarks or bookmark folders. We have since been working hard to restore deleted data, which has also been completed.

We were able to restore the vast majority of lost bookmarks, which will have automatically reappeared for you if you are Signed in to Chrome. Any bookmarks that have not reappeared by now are unfortunately unrecoverable, and we apologize.

If you experience any further issues with Android deleting your bookmarks, please report them in the Android forum.
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Cjack 7/25/12 8:50 AM
WOW! Some I am just out of luck? My decision to trust Google and ICS proved to be horrible ones? Or my decision to use Chrome? Which one - or both? I am so completely disgusted right now, i do not know what else to say. Way to protect the users google - great job.
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Leo.Melt 9/4/12 11:00 AM
In win7 your bookmarks are stored in C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

There are two files here:

Bookmarks and Bookmarks.bak

Right click on one of them and click "restore previous versions". It will look for other versions for a while and give you 3 previous versions to choose from. Choose the latest one. Do the same thing for the other file. Now turn on Chrome and your bookmarks are back. If they are not back, try restoring an older version of those files.

I would also advise saving a copy of both files to a separate folder(a thumb drive too) every few months.

Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android JayinToronto 12/2/12 5:58 PM
On my Nexus 7 running 4.2, only the mobile bookmarks folder shows up. Desktop folder and "other" folder have disappeared
Re: Bookmarks lost after signing in in chrome for android Jen Wang 1/5/13 4:34 AM
Hi,
I just lost all my bookmarks. It just happened.
1. Only on my laptop(I have two).
2. No, I am on my laptop.
I repeat I am using Chrome on my laptop.

Hundreds of bookmarks are gone:
I did no syncs
Downloaded no extensions
Did not upgrade Chrome

I did absolutely nothing--it happened suddenly.

Not all of my bookmarks are gone only 99% of them.

But I have very important bookmarks and I would like them back please.

And I think I might not use Chrome anymore...
