Google search keeps downloading search.json chad.d 12/9/11 8:49 PM
Google Chrome version: 6.0.912.63
Operating System: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2
Error Message: None
Extensions installed: AdBlock 2.5.3; FastestChrome 5.8.6; Chrome to Phone 2.3.1; Wolfram Alpha (Official) 1.0.1

This hasn't seemed to be an issue that is caused by any specific thing I do (other than searching on Google) but the browser will just randomly download a file called search.json.  Generally when this happens I will get a popup saying "This website is attempting to download multiple files." Then it will ask if I want to allow it and I click no.  I have tried to uninstall and reinstall and that seemed to help for a bit, but it has started happening again.  I guess this isn't really a huge deal, its no big hindrance but I would like it to stop, just because its annoying I guess. Thanks for any help you can provide, and I apologize if this is already discussed somewhere, but I couldn't find it. However if it is, and it has been resolved, or explained, a link will more than suffice.

Thanks

Let me know if you need any more info about my system/browser/extensions/whatever else.

Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Merra 12/15/11 2:50 PM
Dingus. I have exactly the same problem as chad.d I think. Sometimes when I make a search with google chrome the browser downloads it self a file called search.json. I use Lion 10.7.2 and chrome 16. All these search.json files keep adding up if I don't delete them. Any Idea how to fix this? The link you posted in your earlier post I don't.

Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json jpzsports 12/28/11 10:31 AM
I have this same problem and its driving me nuts. It happens to me on both Firefox and Chrome so it isn't something to do with the browser. We need to figure out what the issue is.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json ristaloff 1/6/12 12:57 AM
Same problem on firefox.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json foradune 1/9/12 10:45 PM
i have the same problem as jpz sports. it happened with firefox and now chrome. This issue started when i reinstalled/reformatted windows 7. I dont know if thats related. maybe its spyware or something. i cant seem to find a solution on the internet and google doesnt really offer assistance. its very annoying.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json panickyintheuk 1/10/12 5:01 AM
Same thing keeps happening to me! It's not caused any problems or anything, it's just weird.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json DjShine88 1/10/12 12:45 PM
Same thing has been happening to me. Mostly on Firefox. It happens mainly when i edit a search from google's search bar. I've had it for months across all OS (Windows 7, Mac OS X Lion, Linux Ubuntu 11.04) and it happens on Firefox and Sometimes on Chrome

Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json TheHoudhini 1/10/12 7:20 PM
I have the same issue as well. It randomly downloads search.json when i try to type a search term. I think it has something to do with Google's instantaneous search feature and Java stack overflow. I am using chrome 16.0.912.75 on Mac OSX Lion 10.7.2
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json jpzsports 1/10/12 10:27 PM
I agree that I think it has something to do with Google Instant. After the download popup occurs, it says Google Instant isn't available below the search bar for a moment until I refresh the page. But it seems to be only an issue with some people, not all Google users. I wish we could figure this out.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json myBook 1/13/12 6:53 PM
Same here. It drives me nuts. I hope this is another way to solve this problem other than disable the google instance search.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Riverhead 1/14/12 11:16 PM
Like DjShine88 I have experienced this issue on different Operating Systems en with different browsers. I've had it on Windows 7 and Ubuntu/Mint 11 and above... I don't have a mac but I trust you on your word it happens there as well. :-)  I looked it up (which was a drag because of the thing always popping up) and I've read a lot of things like removing add ons, installing others, upgrading plug-ins or downgrading them, never successful. This is all irrelevant anyway, it is just to show that the problem is not browser or OS related.

The 3 people above me are correct. This bug is directly related to instant search but this happens only in the search box (on the site) , and doesn't happen when you use the search bar embedded in your browser or omni-bar (when you type key words in address bar). This is probably why people think this is a rather random thing that comes and goes and think it's solved because their not using the search-box on the website. (I'm trying to use the same terminology as the developers used) I think this only happens when you're logged in as a google user, but I'm not sure. I tried to reproduce the bug while logged out and I couldn't trigger it.

Something tells me that the web history option needs to be active. Some trial and error will tell. Also when you type and pause the search-box (site) reads that as a specific search and could want to try to the user 'no results for json error goo' and will keep popping up until you've managed to complete the word 'google'. The search and/or omni bar in your browser aren't that impatient and let you finish, what would explain a lot and maybe give an idea how to fix this.

So if you want to stop this you'll have to go to your search options and the first option you see is the turn instant search off. You could also type your queries in your browser.

Don't worry it's not malware...
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json adnovitam 1/17/12 6:26 PM
I have instant search off and it still happens. Also, as well as search.json I get the wiki/google clouds over everything my cursor touches.

Extremely annoying & slows down everything.

Advice?

Running Lion with Chrome 16

Having same problem...very annoying...
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Benez1ze 1/23/12 12:14 AM
Same problem here, seems to be fine for a while, but then it comes back really bad. Using Windows 7 64 bit. When it tries to download the file, it will come back and say that google instant is unavailable, so I don't know if that has something to do with it. Just recently I did just add on the OpenFastest extension. I don't think that would do something, but I am not sure.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json kojong 1/29/12 9:25 AM
Guys it maybe because FastestChrome extension. if you have one in your googlechrome try to disable it
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json jpzsports 1/30/12 5:41 PM
I do use the FastestChrome extension so maybe that could be it! I really like that addon tho and would hate to disable it. Maybe they can fix the bug once they're notified of the issue. Do the rest of you use FastestChrome too?
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json brkrbr 1/31/12 8:42 AM
Same problem here. And yes, it could be the fastest chrome extention. I think it isn't the instant search function, since it still happens with instant search off (yes, I tested it). And if the problem is instant search, way more people should have this problem.
The problem seems to stop when the fastest chrome extension is set off. I tried it about 5 minutes, without the problem.

So for chrome I think it is either the fastest chrome extension, or the fastest chrome extension in combination with an other extension.
For other browsers it may be an other extension..?
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json rikscha 2/2/12 1:45 PM
I had the same problem.
I'm using Windows 7 64bit. I have no toolbar and no fastest chrome.

I try the check all with Spy Bot. Problem found. I had a IE cockie tracker. After fixing, no more problems on google main site. i can now searching for everything without the search.json.....

I hope, i could help
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json tarodar 2/8/12 11:36 AM
I am having the problem with Firefox, I thought it was to do with FastestFox, which I assume is the Firefox version of FastestChrome, so reading this makes me feel that is true.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json chrislee074 2/8/12 11:53 AM
I am almost positive that this has to do with the FastestChrome and FastestFox(for firefox users) extension.  Try disabling the extensions search options.

I had the same problem, and this thing solved it. I originally had the Instant search off, turned it on and then back off. doesn't try to download search.json any more.

worked for me. hope to help you too

Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json jpzsports 2/21/12 4:31 PM
A new review was added to the Fastest Chrome extension page in the App Store. Is he correct?

"For those of you wondering about the download of search.json, it's caused by Google and has nothing to do with this extension. It still happened after I uninstalled FastestChrome completely.

For more info see here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=0118990e7d5dbb33&hl=en

The issue is OS and browser independent and thus could not have been caused by an extension."
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json tjwentzel 3/7/12 12:56 AM
It stops as soon as I disable Fastest Chrome, and it doesn't happen on any of my other browsers. Thus leading me to believe the glitch is in Fastest Chrome no matter what they say.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json RippedWarrior 3/7/12 8:27 AM
It stopped when I disabled FastestFox too.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json elko69 3/9/12 11:51 AM
It would appear that the software designers at Chrome are clueless. Dozens of different postings for this stupid error with no solutions offered. I would just like to type in my search without, EVERY STINKING TIME, it tries to download a file instead.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Still_h20 3/16/12 5:58 PM
I just disabled the FastestChrome Extension and that was it.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json 9ab33l 4/8/12 7:28 AM
Thanx buddy it really was the root cause for this mess.I tried everything but didn't got successful till now I will also recommend it to others that if u wanna get rid of this problemo and also don't wanna lose it than instead of removing it,just disable it from extension for as long as U want.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json kerub 4/14/12 12:48 AM
I am using firefox 11 on ubuntu 12.04-x86. I removed the fastfox extension and restart firefox and also computer but anything is changed. "json file" pop-up window still appears when I start to write somethings on the search box and especially when I push on the space bar in google.com web page.

Most extension perform multi tasks whose reactions are tricky to spot out so try to keep extenions to a minimum extent
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json I think I know 5/28/12 4:20 PM
If the file you keep getting is a ton of code, and even if it isn't it is actually FastestChrome that is causing this problem, I currently think the only way to fix it is disabling it (I already checked the settings on FastestChrome).
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json thedigihax 6/1/12 12:09 PM
Security is a good thing but the Browsers asking the users everytime about downloading Multiple files gets pretty Annoying at times.. Here's a probable solution-
1) In Chrome, Go To Options
2) Click on UNDER THE HOOD TAB
3) In the Downloads Section, Uncheck Ask where to save each File before Downloading
4) Click Close
5) Close Chrome(Ending from Task Manager is not a bad idea in this case)
6) Restart Chrome
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json riffdex 6/18/12 9:01 PM
Where did this "fastest chrome" come from? I was having the same problem (Google downloading a search file) and came to this page. I just checked and I have fastest chrome installed but I never installed it. I have noticed changes in the Google page but I assume those were changes to the actual webpage itself, not some rogue plugin that I never wanted.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json hhlion 8/29/12 2:15 AM
actually, when I didn't use the extension of "FastestChrome ", the file of "search" is still be created automatically.

Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json John Mantione 11/2/12 7:12 PM
I disabled, then deleted (trash-can'd) the "FasterChrome" extension and the auto-generation and download of a "search" file appears to have stopped... for now. Give it a try, you can always add it back if it does not solve your problem.
System Disclosure: WinXP4, Pentium4, only 1Gb ram, lots of extensions in Chrome, lots of background programs running

Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json The_Real_Tech 12/8/12 6:07 PM
Yeah, its the fastest chrome. verified. as for the firefox it was hotspot shield and proxy settings. Kept getting proxy is refusing connection errors. In the the network tab you can go to  advanced>network tab>settings> no proxy if you don't use one specifically. Hope I helped anyone having the same problem as me.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Mr111Jman 12/9/12 8:04 PM
This happens to me all the time when using Chrome. I recently started using Chrome, as I was a big fan of Safari and Firefox. This problem never happened with any other browser. Whenever it downloads, the instant search feature of Google doesn't work and nothing pops up on the screen. If someone could tell me how to disable this file pop up, it would be very helpful.

OS: Mac OS X 10.7.4
Chrome Version: 20.0.1132.47

BTW, this also happens on my other computer, which runs Mac OS X 10.6.8 and the latest version of Chrome.

Someone help

Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json mike downs 12/10/12 5:51 AM
it's the fastest chrome ext. fixed it once before but forgot how it has something to do with search engines under settings in chrome
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json mike downs 12/10/12 5:57 AM
disable fastest chrome is the easiest way to fix
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Lariendel 12/11/12 10:23 PM
I don't even have FastestChrome extension and it still does it so no its not verified as FastestChrome.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Fork it 12/12/12 5:05 AM
Tools > FastestFox > Popup bubble > uncheck 'Search Google' . Never have the issue again. Worked for me.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json xjk1 12/19/12 5:40 PM
I have this problem too, but I don't have FastestFox. I'm using Chrome. I believe it is related to using the AutoPager extension. I'd prefer not to disable it. Any ideas?
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json xjk1 12/19/12 7:30 PM
Update: I uninstalled AutoPager and I still have this problem.

Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Robin Kimm 1/2/13 6:05 PM
Same thing has been happening to me for the past 6 months it's driving me mad. Also when I make google searches using the address bar, it often doesn't work.
I've found that the search.json file only downloads when the search bar is giving me search suggestions...
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json TmplKnght 1/2/13 10:52 PM
I would like to add my input if I may.  I have had this problem for a while. Typically it is connected to another search problem (possibly the same problem) whereby attempting to search from the address bar results in a blank page with the Google logo at the top and no search results. Clicking on the proper search bar and typing a search term causes the downloaded file to appear when I pause or hit return. If I use the mouse to click the magnifier then it will search normally, but instant results still fail to work (I have histories on, and Google is in full stalker mode).

I have had this problem only with Google, however I have had it with both Firefox and Chrome. I have had it on multiple systems. I've had it on Windows 7 32bit and 64bit, and Windows 8 64bit. What leads me to suspect an extension is that on Windows 8, the problems started when Chrome synced with my Google account. It doesn't happen on anyone else's computer on my home network of which there are five. It happens on the two of mine. When I used Firefox, I had FastestFox, and similarly, FastestChrome on Chrome.

I will attempt to replicate the issue as often as I can to make sure its stopping isn't a fluke, and then will kill FastestChrome. It is a very useful add-on so can we all bombard the developer with emails? Even if it isn't FastestChrome, maybe if enough seem to think it is, the developer can address Google for us.

I am sick and tired of all these changes made in our backs. Google and Apple are just abusing of our time.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Telaunit 3/12/13 1:25 PM
I have to agree.  I love FastestChrome and don't want to turn it off.  I just want these damn files to stop downloading!
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Janac Meena 3/15/13 11:41 AM
FastestChrome is the chrome version of FastestFox, not the other way around :)

Same problem, since more than a year now.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Joseph Keegan 3/19/13 10:56 AM
I'm also having this problem, VERY frustrating.  Indeed, disabling FASTEST CHROME stopped this from being an issue.

Is this established as a CHROME issue or a FASTEST CHROME issue?  Is the error in the plugin or the browser?  They do not seem to be made by the same source (google).

Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Amar Bhat 3/27/13 2:33 PM
You don't have to disable the entire FastestFox/FastestChrome extension, actually. If you go into the extension options, you can just uncheck the boxes under the Search Results tab (This is for FastestFox, the FastestChrome options may look a little different).
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Michel Everts 4/4/13 10:33 AM
And what do you need to change if you don't have the FastestFox extension, and never had it either?
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Frank Gibilterra 4/8/13 9:56 AM
SOLVED... go to settings-> tools-> extensions-> and its Fastest Chrome extension that is causing it to save searches, I just deleted it but un-checking enable will amount to the same thing.

Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Mary Tillery 4/9/13 8:12 PM
I have this problem as well. I have tried deleting Chrome and re-installing it but I am permenately deleting it now.
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json Balázs Tátrai 4/16/13 11:27 PM
worked for me: FastestChrome Options / Popup Bubble / Search Engines: uncheck google AND Google Maps. (someone mentioned google, but for me google maps was also causing the problem.)
Re: Google search keeps downloading search.json autobahn 5/1/13 9:04 AM
Nope, I dont have any of those extensions, and it happens on both Chrome & Firefox, but only on the Google main site (www.google.com) search bar.
