Permanent Incognito Mode? (Make incognito default for browsing) berryday 4/15/09 5:32 PM
Is there any way to make the Incognito Mode a default or permanent setting, so that every window and tab I open starts in that mode, and I have to request to make it noncognito? Essentially invert the way it is now and that is what I want.

You can modify your shortcuts to chrome (those located on the desktop or in the start menu) by right clicking on them and selecting properties. In the properties dialog click on the "Shortcut" tab, then in the "Target:" field add " --incognito" to the end of the target. It should look something like this (in Windows XP) when you are done:
"C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --incognito
Everytime you open chrome via this shortcut, it will start incognito. To open new incognito windows you will still need to use the CTRL+SHIFT+N shortcut key.

With all that being said, I think it would be very nice to have an option to use incognito by default!

Perfect, and hopefully a developer will see this and implement our request!

Good solution Kevin, but you must beware that ONLY chrome sessions initiated from your desktop shortcut will start in incognito mode. Anything opened from a shortcut, or a link in a (non-web based) email or document will NOT start in incognito mode.

I tried kevinstonge's suggestion but the shortcut (incognito mode) only works if I already have an existing chrome running (non-incognito). If for example no chrome is running and I clicked on the shortcut (incognito mode), the process chrome.exe gets into the task manager but the browser it self is not displayed. Anyone experience this?

When I did the --incognito thing; it told me that it was NOT a Valid Shortcut and would NOT let me Apply or click Ok.

You'd think that this would be an option, making incognito mode a default.

I want to point out another drawback of incognito mode - unlike Firefox extensions do not work in this mode.

HeyPal is right. If you change the properties from the desktop shortcut (by adding --incognito to the target line), it will work. You can then drag the shortcut to the task bar, and it will also work there. Using INCOGNITO will probably give you peace of mind in case someone is snooping around on your computer.

"I want to point out another drawback of incognito mode - unlike Firefox extensions do not work in this mode."

You have to allow extensions to operate in incognito mode on an individual basis.  You should find the checkboxes for that in the extension manager window (chrome://extensions/).

Launching non web based links into incognito chrome.

I was able to get incognito chrome to launch from links in other apps by changing the registry entry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ChromeHTML\shell\open\command (Default) to "C:\Users\Todd\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" -incognito -- "%1"

I hope this works for others.

The registry key does work, but for some reason when you go to chromes settings incognito will not apply in the settings UI... Where is this registry key lol??

Hi
Re: Permanent Incognito Mode? (Make incognito default for browsing) nude0007 8/30/11 9:02 AM
when I right click on any shortcut, i do not get any tab with "properties" on it.  I get a tab with a lot of selections, the closest being "edit".  I can edit the name or the url.  editing the name does nothing, editing the url to add "-incognito" makes it quit working.

It has been years since I requested an incognito as default and apparently so have others.  they aren't listening to any of us.  Why can't they realize we want our privacy?

Came across Todd's post today. Thanks for the tip! Wish I'd known how to do this sooner.

Have a look here, http://blog.esmnetworks.com/development/force-google-chrome-to-start-in-incognito-mode-regardless-of-how-it-is-invoked/

Remember to adjust the paths to chrome.exe/.bat file as required.

Unfortunately, you will have to merge that registry file every time Chrome updates itself.
