Getting "Update server not available: (error: 11)" on 'About' screen Brett C. 1/25/10 10:49 PM
Google Chrome version: 4.0.302.2 dev (but also the latest beta)
Operating System: OS X Snow Leopard
Error Message: Update server not responding (error: 11)

I have been running the OS X dev channel since it was released, installed in ~/Applications. But when my gf wanted to use Chrome I installed the beta channel in /Applications as that's the most reasonable place to put it. But then I noticed my dev channel install stopped detecting updates; the about screen always said I had the most up-to-date version.

To try to fix this I moved the beta channel copy to my gf's ~/Applications directory. But when I did that, I started getting the current "error: 11" issue in both my dev channel install and her beta channel install. I went as far as to delete ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome in hopes it was a configuration issue, but that didn't do anything except annoy me by having to re-install my extensions.

Any clue on why this is happening? Or at least how to thoroughly uninstall Chrome so I can start from a pristine install with no pre-existing configuration?

Thanks for the attempt, Dwight, but none of those suggestions for the other error messages worked.

Same problem for me. Error 11. Anyone know what this error means or a pointer to the update handling code in the chromium src?

same error...
Re: Getting "Update server not available: (error: 11)" on 'About' screen morphant 4/20/10 6:02 AM
Same error, using Chrome 5.0.371.0, OS X 10.6.3. After manually updating to Chrome 5.0.375.9 dev, the error persists.

I think the problem comes from the folder where you have installed. I had a chrome internet folder inside, and so did not work. Try move chrome to root application folder if it is so

Same problem as well.  Where's a Forum Monitor when you need one?  Google, fix this or show us how.

Same here, would love for this to work.

Still getting this as well.  Have been for months.
Re: Getting "Update server not available: (error: 11)" on 'About' screen Brett C. 5/25/10 4:47 PM
I solved this by putting the dev channel version of Chrome in /Applications and the beta channel version in ~/Applications. Not sure why it needs to be that way, but I have not had any update issues since doing this.

I have this already for a long time. I'm currently on osx 10.6.34 and chrome 5.0.375.125. Have just deleted and reinstalled this version: no joy / no solution. How do the Google devs scan for problems to solve? I have never seen an official reaction on this error 11 from Google :-(.

Re: "[--] Update server not available (error:11)".

Updates are still non-functional as of 8/13/2010.

I will talk to someone I just met on the Chrome team, because this is #epic #fail.

Use Case
1. Deleted Chrome app
2. Deleted ~/Library/Google/Chrome
3. Emptied Trash
4. Reinstalled
5. Updates still fail

Snow Leopard 10.6.4
Chrome 5.0.375.126
No other Google products installed

OK, I've been getting error 11 for over a year now, across multiple reinstalls of Chrome. The following instructions pointed me in the right direction:

Here's what I did:

1) Quite Chrome and any other Google applications. Note that you may want to update to a recent version of Chrome before continuing.

2) Run the following commands from the terminal. Each of these three commands should be entered as a single line:

~/Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/Resources/GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent.app/Contents/Resources/install.py --uninstall

sudo /Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/Resources/GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent.app/Contents/Resources/install.py --uninstall

sudo rm -rf /Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/ ~/Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/

Be careful to enter that last command exactly as written! "sudo rm -rf" will happily delete anything you ask it to delete.

3) Restart Chrome.

At this point, I had a working updater.

Note that I only have a single copy of Chrome installed, and I keep it in /Applications.

EMK1024 - that worked for me.

Thanks!

EMK1024, worked for me too, thanks, it's been really annoying

I had the same error on my macbook pro (running snow leopard).

Here is the fix I found:

1. I had moved Chrome from my Applications folder to a sub folder I created.
I read that can cause a problem.

2. So I closed Chrome.

3. Then I moved Chrome from the sub folder
back into the main apps folder.

4. Then I shut down my mac (not a restart,
I've heard it's better to do a full shut down.)

5. Gave my mac about 5 min, then started it up.

6. Opened Chrome, went to "About Chrome" and
the error was gone.  Then it let me update to the newest version.

This was the ONLY trouble shooting step I took.
I'm not sure if maybe just shutting down Chrome
and restarting would have fixed it.  I just figured
it couldn't hurt to try it.

Just wanted to say that emk1024's solution worked for me. The first string generated at could not find this file or directory error but the others did the trick. Thanx for posting the solution.
Re: Getting "Update server not available: (error: 11)" on 'About' screen kaz219 1/11/11 9:05 AM
@emk1024:

didn't work for me. After running the commands, upon restarting, Chrome says in a yellow banner on the top of the page “Chrome may not be able to update itself”. I can then click on “set automatic update”.

If I don't choose “set automatic update”, when I click “about Chrome” there is simply no version check.

If I choose “set automatic update”, I get asked for my admin pwd, and then the error 11 is back.

Also tried what nicknamemankcin proposed. No luck either. This is annoying. I have the impression that my extensions aren't updating either.

Thanks emk1024 for your helpful instructions, they solved the error 11 for me too!
Re: Getting "Update server not available: (error: 11)" on 'About' screen Larry Daniele 3/11/11 6:18 AM
I found emk1024's answer mostly helpful. However, the first terminal command ("~/Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/Resources/GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent.app/Contents/Resources/install.py --uninstall") didn't run ("No such file or directory"). But the subsequent two commands ran fine and did the trick for me.

I tried emk1024's answer and had a similar issue to Larry Daniele - the first command didn't run - but the second and third asked me to enter a password.... what password??
Re: Getting "Update server not available: (error: 11)" on 'About' screen dmland 9/24/11 3:05 PM
Hats off to emk1024 (with the same caveat as others: the first command may not exist for your installation).

I no longer have the dreaded error 11. Now, of course, I have error 12.
Re: Getting "Update server not available: (error: 11)" on 'About' screen lpmcg 4/18/12 1:35 PM
I was able to fix it by simply renaming the application Google Chrome.  I had named it Google Chrome Beta and that was causing the problem.  Close, rename, open, and it should work.
Re: Getting "Update server not available: (error: 11)" on 'About' screen .void 4/20/12 3:12 AM
It works for me, when I disable my Firewall (Little Snitch).

The problem is, however, that I have no idea how to set up an exception rule, as there's simply no "Google", "Chrome", "Update" or similar application or any software connecting to "google.com" Servers.

But I'm a 100% positive, that it's the firewall, as the error 11 disappears as soon as I disable it.

Regards,
.void

OMG Thank you! The first command *probably will not work* and if you open that folder up, you won't see anything there. Run the 2nd sudo command and you should be set!

I'm a developer and run all 3 versions of chrome, and have them renamed, but this fixed it for my main dev chrome version!!!
