Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer elsiemary 11/14/11 3:42 AM
Google Chrome version (type about:version into the address bar):Operating System:Error Message:Extensions installed:
Please describe your question/comment in detail (for example, steps to reproduce the problem):  I have always used Google Chrome.  Recently I had problems trying to go into Google Chrome, so I uninstalled and reinstalled.  When I reinstalled and clicked on Google Chrome icon, I keep getting 'sweetim' coming up with a different logo. Is this part of Google Chrome.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled again, but 'sweetim' still appears?   How can I get rid of this and have my 'old' Google Chrome back?
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer caver_tim 11/14/11 5:55 AM
have you got any extensions installed?
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer caver_tim 11/14/11 5:57 AM
A google search for "SweetIM" returns "free emoticons" so it looks like you might have installed something from this site that had "I agree for you to set all my home pages and search engines etc to SweetIM"

Check extensions for anything like this you can un-install
check the install / remove feature of your operating system for anything suspicious
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer elsiemary 11/14/11 7:41 AM
Hi - thank you for your reply  - not quite sure what you mean by 'extensions'......?     I have installed and used 'Spybot Search & Destroy' - would this remove anything suspicious?   Also I have AVG installed.
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer elsiemary 11/14/11 8:06 AM
Hi again - I checked out my control panel, which previously showed sweetim.com, but now it doesn't.   I emailed them and received an automated reply giving me choices to go into.  One suggested checking tools on my browser which shows 'add-ons'.  I assume this must be the same as you mention - extensions.
However, this does not show sweetim, so cannot remove it that way.    I have now emailed sweetim.com support and awaiting their reply.
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer elsiemary 11/14/11 8:44 AM
Hi - again - just thought I would let you know I managed to get rid of sweetim (by following sweetim's instructions).  I had read down their automated email far enough I would have seen the option how to uninstall sweetim from google chrome.   For anyone else's information, I had to open up google chrome - click on the spanner - open up options - and on the browser display section, change back to Google Chrome.  (simple when now I know how and read things properly!)  At long last, no more flashing squares cropping up telling me what I've won, etc., etc.,!!
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer allyourlives 6/3/12 11:16 AM
You can also delete SweetIM completely from your computer.
Spanner -> Settings -> Manage Search Engines -> Click on the X next to SweetIM
And DONE! No more SweetIM at all on your computer! I don't know who made it so hard that even uninstalling Chrome doesn't fix the problem, but there you go. Cheers!

Not so fast, I have went above and beyond with this and every time I open up Chrome I still get this for my start page.
sweetim.cxm/?barid={6BF43C35-CC3C-11E1-8BF4-001EECDC6117}
Link altered to prevent going to actual site.

I have went through the registry and deleted everything to do with sweet and RASP and anything else to do with SWEETim and still get that for my search engine.

Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer Sie_Deen 7/24/12 1:02 PM
Thanks everyone for helping each other out!

For folks who are new to this thread, the change you observed is usually caused by a 3rd party program that you may have installed. Some of these programs will install other programs/extensions/toolbars that changes your browser's settings instead (i.e. homepage, default search engine, start up pages, etc). If your settings have been changed, please make sure to check the following:
  • If unfamiliar pages are opening up each time you start up Chrome, check in Wrench Settings On Startup > next to the radio button for Open a specific page or set of pages, click on Set pages > remove any unwanted URLs by hovering over the URL until you see an "X" appear to the right side of the URL.
  • If all searches that you perform in the omnibox are returning with results from a different search engine instead of your preferred search engine, check in Wrench Settings Search Manage search engines > check the list of Default search enginesOther search engines, and Search engines added by extensions, and remove suspicious entries that you are not familiar with. Depending on your extensions, you may not see the last section for Search engines added by extensions.
    • To remove an unfamiliar search engine, make sure you select your preferred search engine first, and then remove the unfamiliar option.
  • If an unfamiliar page opens up when you click on the Home button, check in Wrench Settings Appearance > select the Show Home button checkbox > check the URL below it.
  • Also check that there are no extensions installed that may be causing these changes. Go to Wrench Settings Extensions > if you see any unfamiliar extension that you do not remember installing, try disabling/removing the extension to see it was causing these changes. Some users have mentioned "New Tool for Chrome". To disable, uncheck the "Enabled" checkbox next to the extension. To remove, hover over the extension until you see a trash can icon appear, and click on the icon.
If you do not remember installing any SweetIM specific software around the time that this change took place, it is advisable to perform a malware scan to make sure that there are no other suspicious programs remaining that could make changes to your settings.
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer Venetta 8/12/12 9:41 AM
I have had a similar problem but the difference is that I was installing ccleaner and then I got sweetim on my google chrome and my firfox browsers and cannot get rid of them.
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer allyourlives 8/12/12 10:49 AM
That's odd because ccleaner is one of the best downloads available to clear junk off your computer. Did you download it from a trusted site or just torrent it? Because some people try to make a buck or two spreading these things.

Thanks a lot!!!!!! I removed the annoying and useless SweetIm by following your suggestion:

check in Wrench > Settings > Search > Manage search engines > check the list of Default search engines, Other search engines, and Search engines added by extensions, and remove suspicious entries that you are not familiar with. Depending on your extensions, you may not see the last section for Search engines added by extensions.
thanks!!!
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer Richard Embrey II 9/30/12 8:36 AM
guys i figured out the problem. its CHROME!!! you have to click the little options button under the red X, go to Signed in as... > Settings > Advanced Sync Settings > uncheck extensions and apps. that was the problem. google actually goes and reinstalls the extensions when it sees that they are missing, bcuz it freakin auto syncs everything even if you dont want it anymore. it was so annoying. i dont know how to actually remove the extensions from the sync list, but it you tell it to simply not sync any extensions anymore then it fixes the problem.

Richard I have done that and all other steps mentioned on these threads but still when I start Chrome I get two tabs SweetIM and Google.  A search of the registry shows no sign of it- similarly a complete search of all files and hidden files reveals nothing - but it's still there.

thankyou.  but then did all steps and sweetim still there!!!  : (
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer ThePrivateGeek 10/21/12 3:45 AM
Right.. check this out:
Go to chrome settings, On startup, there are 3 options, the third one is "Open specific pageor set of pages" click on set pages beside it and remove any sweetim pages from there. This should do it!
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer Panicea 10/21/12 8:05 AM
See above. Done that and ALL other suggestions but still got sweetIM.
Removing it from Chrome doesn't work because it reinstalls itself when you next start Chrome.
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer ThePrivateGeek 10/21/12 8:10 AM
Am lost then.. I'd say reinstall chrome but it sounds a bit drastic!
Good luck
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer Panicea 10/25/12 7:28 AM
I have uninstalled and re-installed Chrome - it doesn't solve the problem.  I have also done a system Restore to a date prior to the infection, but again no joy.
What I can't understand is why Google with their vast resources don't provide a fix for a problem which is plaguing thousands of their customers.   Where's the support?
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer The realTVH 10/26/12 8:45 AM
I found the reply from Richard Embrey II that looks like it will solve my problem with extensions being re-added each time I start Chrome but being new to Chrome I haven't a clue where to find " the little options button under the red X".  Similarly folk talk about "wrench" - I have no "wrench" anywhere outside my workshop that I am aware of.  Help much appreciated.
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer Panicea 10/26/12 10:22 AM
I don't know the red X but the 'wrench' (spanner in English) has been replaced by three horizontal bars.

I have the same problem but just with incredibar! And it is absolutely annoying! I have tried the above options but can't seem to find incredibar anywhere in the search engines at all. Since I can't find it, I can't delete it. Also, it prevents me from performing search options directly from the omnibox, instead giving me an error message. Help!!
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer djames77 11/8/12 1:35 AM
i've had the same problem and could not remove sweetim. I tried to above but it didn't work. I've finally removed it by opening up chrome, right clicking on the toolbar chrome and opening up another chrome browser which was coming up with the sweetim search bar and icons. In this browser i went to the 3 bars in  the op right corner, right click, go to tools then extensions and deleted the sweetim and other sweet extensions from their, seems to work fine now with no sign of sweetim.

I had the same problem, SweetIM kept appearing as my default tab after uninstalling and removing it from start up pages and search engines.

Here is what I did:
Click on the customize chrome button, then on Settings. Select the extensions tab on the top left. Remove all the SweetIM extensions.
Hurrah!

Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer IIIbehemothIII 12/27/12 7:43 AM
actually, while many of the responses and suggestions here do "hide" sweetIM (which i believe is an extension for windows like messenger and other instant message services), the tools within chrome do nothing to solve the problem. I myself accidentally installed SweetIM, and it has had the same effect as it has on your computers (changing chrome search setting, home page, start page etc). however, on my computer, it has installed itself as a program (in fact, about 3/4 programs - making it far trickier to remove). simply going to the settings-extensions menu in chrome wont remove it from your computer. and if you have IE/firefox/windows live messenger (msn), you'll still get it. the way i removd it was by going to control panel, and then uninstalling the program "sweet"-something. (i dont know the full name, but it began with "sweet"). this then uninstalled and opened a browser window [DO NOT CLOSE THIS WINDOW]. the window it opens gives a guide on how to uninstall the 3/4 other components of Sweet IM, such as "sweetpacks" (you'll find that in control panel too). until you have removed all of these, you wont get rid of sweet IM, you will only have hidden it. and judging by the way it snuck into all our computers, and has split itself into several files, i'd say it's up to no good. spybot-search adn destroy is a good program to use, and i used it to delete the registry entries for Sweet IM.

best of luck people :)

the link to the uninstall page that opens is: "lp.sweetim.com/SweetPacksBundleUninstaller/"

make sure you type in "http://" before pasting it in.

Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer Van Hooreweder 1/5/13 2:51 PM
Does this trouble also give google ads instead of another affiliate program's banners?  Last week when I opened tradedoubler it stood full of google banners, I dared not tell the manager, because I always had trojans detected by SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition.

My Chrome trouble rather comes with one extra tab funmoods instead of immoods and two other ones.  This second attack has disappeared automatically, but Chrome is still much too slow.

Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer Libratun 1/14/13 3:56 AM
Go to:

Windows XP
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

Windows Vista
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

Windows 7
C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

In that folder, you'll find a file named "Preferences". The file is saved in JSON format. You can open this file as plain text with Notepad, search for the string "homepage", and modify one or both of the settings. The first one indicates what Chrome uses as your homepage.
You will see as below:
"homepage": "http://www.google.com/",
"homepage_is_newtabpage": false,
~~~
"urls_to_restore_on_startup": [ "http://www.google.com/", "http://home.sweetim.com/?crg=3.1010000.10002&barid={4C107BFE-5D72-11E2-890A-506313D0D9B0}" ]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Change the homepage is newtabpage to True (optional), delete the second string of sweetim.com/ blah blah blah. or set it to another page that you wanna set.

"homepage": "http://www.google.com/",
"homepage_is_newtabpage": True,
~~~
"urls_to_restore_on_startup": [ "http://www.google.com/",  "https://plus.google.com/" ]
Hope this help!
Don't feel lonely! It's been the longest three days in my life. My first computer had a 40 mb hard drive. I'm seventy-one and I hope you can solve this. Uninstalled the program with the control panel. The cat came back. I used a third party "remover" but I didn't pay 'cause I hate paying for something that is going to take over even more of my computer, and I didn't see a place to visit them with a few friends from Detroit and let them know of my displeasure. If anybody knows where I could send 100,000 tiff files....
No matter who is guilty of what, facebook or whatever, no solution here. I have reset my preferences, setting, and doodads. I waste my time doing the same routine removing things that come back immediately. Why are the googles and explorers and foxes and operas and other whosies not fighting back to protect their product and its users. Why is it legal? If not legal, why aren't those domains shut down and the owners fed to crocks?
Seems that the IT industry tolerates too much and the nortons and the avasts and the mcafees are in bed with the bad guys. Why doesn't Carnivore get them?
This has happened to me as well when I was trying to download Google Chrome. We tried using Spybot search & destroy as well, but the Sweetim files still show up in the registry...so now we're under the assumption that someone is tracking ALL of our browser activity and key logging our passwords. I just followed the instructions posted by Sie_Deen and discovered that Sweetim is part of Bing.  I enabled Bing recently.  I had no idea it brought anything with it.  I removed Sweetim from the list of search engines.  So far the app hasn't reappeared.  Thanks for the help, Sie_Deen!
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer W K Palulis 5/30/13 6:50 AM
Bing is not the problem. Sweetim will cause problems for Bing, also. Tech savvy lawyers should fix that. IT investigators should be putting the offenders behind bars. I am disgusted that nobody in law enforcement cares enough to put a firecracker up their collective ass.
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer Rider64 5/30/13 9:31 AM
You're right.  And odder (and more irritating) still, I opened IE for the first time in months, and there was a whole sweetim suite attached!  Invasive?  You bet!  I tried to get rid of it from that browser without success.
Re: Google Chrome and 'sweetim?' why has sweetim taken over google chrome on my computer avatarofhope 6/28/13 11:42 PM
So, I am pretty sure I got it from updating Daemon Tools Lite (virtual cd drive software). It changed all my web browser home pages, search engines, etc...
in firefox, go to about:home, and search for "sweet" and right click -> reset each one and search for "keyword.URL" and reset that.
in chrome do what Sie_Deen did.
For me, it installed a plugin in IE, so I had to disable two things, and dig around to remove all the stuff it broke.
ah man what a pain.
I went into the Customize and Control section at the far right of your page and clicked "Settings" then "Manage Search Engines" then "Inspect this element" You will see before your very eyes where BING is being redirected to SWEETIM or SWEETPACS.  This is in the newest Version of Chrome just downloaded from the Web. (Version 29.0.1547.66). It is a delete-able line in the list of search engines available.  Be careful, it is in two locations. I did not have time to inspect all the code in the element, so if someone would do so I would appreciated it. SweetIM is pervasive and very difficult to get rid of.  The attached file is from the version of Chrome I just installed and it is open right now and I am reporting this maleware presence from it. Sie_Deen below has the path. if inspect element you can delete them but I just now went back and as the screen shot shows there it is again.
RTKEAN hear again, I closed and restarted Chrome and deleting it in Manage Search Engines does seem to remove SweetIM and Sweetpacs.  Cheers, it is coming into your computer piggybacked on Bing.
Have you tried to uninstall it - maybe using Ccleaner?
Have you run an updated Malwarebytes and/or SuperAntiSpyware?
Have you checkec your AppData folders and removed it from there?
Is this part of Google Chrome.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled again, but 'sweetim' still appears?   How can I get rid of this and have my 'old' Google Chrome back?
You say "check in Wrench > Settings > On Startup > next to the radio button "
Who, what and where is "Wrench"?  It sounds like a tool, and in my toolbox in the real world, in the actual garage, if I do not find the wrench I need, I go and buy a new one.   On here I am left guessing as to what you might mean.
Would you care to enlighten us about "Wrench" ?   What is the meaning of "wrench"?    Were is "wrench"?    What and where is a "radio button"?
That, in general, is what I hate about software people - always coming up with new secret code words for stuff that ought to be made crystal clear.  You people are purposely unclear, unkind, unreasonable.
My guess is that in the year 2045 a herd of irate retired people will overrun the campuses of MS, Apple, Google, etc, etc, seeking revenge for that kind of behavior. It won't be pretty.
