Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? jkstill 4/7/13 8:37 AM
Google Chrome        26.0.1410.43 (Official Build 189671) m
Windows 8 64bit
Extensions: Only Evernote Webclipper is enabled - never had an issue with it
------------

Yesterday Chrome was fine.
All tabs are stuck on 'Downloading proxy script'
I opened an incognito window and tried that - same result.
Next I disabled Evernote WebClipper - same result in std and incognito windows.

Gmail, google, xkcd, nothing will load.

All load without issue in Firefox 19.0.2

Any ideas?

Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? jkstill 4/7/13 8:44 AM
After reviewing some other posts in the forum, I cleared cache and browsing data for the past day.

The issue persists.

Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? Ian Clark 4/7/13 6:24 PM
I'm having this issue also, sometimes it takes 20-30 seconds for this to complete before the first page I navigate to loads.
Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? jkstill 4/7/13 7:11 PM
In my case it doesn't take 20-30 seconds, it just never returns.

I let it go for 20 minutes or so, then closed Chrome.

I've switched back to Firefox.

Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? jkstill 4/8/13 3:42 PM
Apparently no fix yet:

From About Chrome:

  Version 26.0.1410.43 m
Google Chrome is up to date.

Still broke...

This is bullshit. I'm going to clear history, cache and then uninstall and re-install it. I'll let you guys know if this works.

Am I actually going to start using ie? I rather wait it out.  Please update.
Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? jkstill 4/9/13 11:12 AM
This has been fixed
Here is the new version information.

Version 26.0.1410.64 m

Google Chrome is up to date.

It certainly felt good to be completely ignored by Google as far as letting folks know what was going on.

It seems that Google has entered the "large enterprise" phase, in that they feel they have no need to let folks know what is going on.

Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? jkstill 4/9/13 2:07 PM
Perhaps I spoke too soon...

While most of my previous tabs opened, a couple simply will not,
while others seem to delay for some time before loading.

Also a number of attempts to load a web page fail on the first attempt
with an error along the lines of 'network settings have changed, please reload'

Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? Mark Elvidge 4/10/13 2:16 AM
Same - here. Yesterday re-loaded Google from web, and all was OK, but this morning, same problem again! So looks like I'm sticking with Firefox for a while! :(
Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? Erik Vejen Nielsen 4/10/13 6:10 AM
Not necessarily an issue with Chrome :)

Try this: (http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=106010)

If Google Chrome seems to take a long time to load a website or search, it may be configured to acccess pages through a web proxy. Check whether the "Resolving proxy" message appears in the lower-left corner of the browser window.

Follow these steps to change your proxy setting (for Windows):

Click the Chrome menu  on the browser toolbar.
Select Settings.
Click Show advanced settings.
In the "Network" section, click Change proxy settings. This will open the Internet Properties dialog.
Click LAN settings .
Deselect the "Automatically detect settings" checkbox.

Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? jkstill 4/10/13 8:20 AM
Thanks, I had not considered looking at the proxy settings, as I have never used a proxy.

While no web proxy was set, the box 'Automatically detect settings' was checked, so I unchecked it.

Loading for some sites is faster now.

Something changed in Chrome with the previous update in regard to this setting.

One of these:

Chrome set 'Automatically detect settings'
or
That was already set, and Chrome started making use of it in some unknown way.

Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? sinkab 4/10/13 8:59 AM
Changing the proxy setting seems to have totally fixed the problem for me!
Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? Erik Vejen Nielsen 4/10/13 11:54 AM
The automatic proxy detection setting in the windows internet options has caused slow chrome issues as far back as 2010 to my knowledge, it is not a new problem.
But I don't know why your Chrome decided to make an issue of it now or why it reacted so dramatically.

Glad it seems to have helped you and others.

Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? TehPalle 4/12/13 1:26 PM
I had just the same problem.
Also running Windows 8 64-bit with Chrome 26.0.1410.64 m.
My motherboard have both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, and I noticed my Wi-Fi kept connecting and disconnecting rapidly.
(This also caused the "Service Host: Local Service (No Network)" process to consume quite a lot CPU.)
So I disabled the Wi-Fi NIC, and voilà, all the pages I tried to open in Chrome instantly loaded.
I re-enabled the Wi-Fi without any problems.
I don't know the reason for this to help, nor whether the problem lies with Windows 8 or Chrome, but I hope this may help fixing it for you guys. :)

The solution for the problem is one thing ... The cause maybe essential to understand the problem. Cause MIGHT be that you use XBMC or another mediaserver at home, that is using the same ports as your computer ....

having a similar issue here... pages eventually load, but there's often long delays.  I'm on Windows 7 x64, Chrome Version 26.0.1410.64 m

My "default" page is Google Maps and this is mostly where I see it.  Opening other tabs to other sites seems to behave normally most of the time.

I was having the same difficulty. In my case, it was caused by the MediaHint extension. Turned this off and no problems now.

Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? RulerOf 5/16/13 9:15 AM
I've seen this on Windows 7 and 8 systems on my network, and was not expecting it.  "Automatically Detect Settings" for a local proxy was selected as these were newly-installed systems, but seeing "Downloading Proxy Script" was a little worrisome... I don't use a WPAD server.

Malware has been known to host rogue WPAD servers as an infection vector for other machines on the network, so I ran a scan just in case; the NMAP script here will let you do the same: http://nmap.org/nsedoc/scripts/broadcast-wpad-discover.html

It didn't find anything on my network.  Turning off proxy auto-discovery of course prevented this from recurring.

Instantly fixed the ~1 second delay I was experiencing when opening URLs in new tabs via the bookmarks bar. Thanks!

Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? KPSUK 5/21/13 3:30 AM
Hmmmm

Windows LAN settings.

On my machine the 'Auto Detect' box is checked and Chrome works fine
On another user's PC the same settings, doesn't work
Unchecked the box and still doesn't work
Checked Bypass local addresses - still doesn't work.

They get a popup with Authentication Required (401)
if they authenticate they can use localhost, but as soon as they reboot the authentication comes back.

Not a lot of use to them if they are off site!

I have the same issue but only on startup. New tabs or navigating after start up is just fine. Hangs for 3 or 4 seconds on "Downloading Proxy Settings". Unchecked the setting in Internet Options. Problem still exists. I know 4 seconds of wait isn't major but it used to open up "with a touch like frogs in a dynamite pond".
Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? Paul St Onge 5/30/13 7:30 PM
HERE IS THE FIX!!!!!

Go to Start | Control Panal | Internet Options | Connections | LAN Settings | At the top of the LAN Settings dialog box, uncheck Automatically detect settings.

Also make sure that you have all other boxes unchecked (unless you do use a proxy) if you don't know what a Proxy is chances are you are NOT using one.

Now relaunch browser.

This should solve your problem.

Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? jkstill 5/30/13 9:48 PM
I realize that for many folks this issue has been simply LAN settings.

As I have stated in at least one other post, that was not the case.

Chrome did not start working properly again until the next update.

Hej Erik

Question translated:

Hello Erik
Unfortunately it did not last long. After a couple of hours the same delays reappear, and I once again receive a message saying that network settings have been changed. The tick I removed still is, and the browser no longer says "downloading proxyscript", but the result is the same. The problem appears when the PC has been idling for a while. Can you provide further assistance?
Thanks in advance

Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? Arkonus 7/9/13 10:30 PM
Tried the "solution" and still have the same issue;.get perhaps 10mins of surfing before net connection stalls. So far only system reboot "offsets" the problem, until it stalls again. No browser extensions turned on, not auto detect proxy settings, and it isn't exclusive to any one browser - they all stall. It has to be a network interface issue, but don't know what...
Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? Erik Vejen 7/10/13 9:24 AM
The problem you describe sounds more like a networking issue than an issue with chrome, and as such should be posted in a separate thread, perhaps on a more appropriate forum.
Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? DetroitCityG 7/17/13 5:38 PM
I am currently having the same issue with my systems. The problem seems to be with the computer as my other wifi devices work just fine. As explained in some of the posts it seems to happen after about 20 minutes to an hour of use and for me only a reboot of the system resolves the issue but only temporarily. This started about two days ago after downloading the latest google chrome update.

Version 28.0.1500.72 m
Google Chrome is up to date.

System was fine though and I have another system that was not updated that has the same issue. The only thing i can think of is the windows updates that came through in the past couple days.

As stated above all other devices work fine it's the computers that are having this issue. My phone works fine, tablets fine. Even when downloading using Vuze my downloads continue but all browser stop working.. Today I ran a scan with AVG and Malwarebytes nothing was found... from reading some other the other posts i would try another browser but i can tell that it wont work...

that's all i can think of at the moment i hope this help us resolve this issue...

Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? jmg007 7/23/13 5:59 PM
Go into task manager and make sure any google chrome process is closed then restart chrome, it should work.  It seems to happen when you try to open chrome while windows is still loading.

I have found its best to give windows a good 2-3 minutes of startup time before trying to open any applications.  (does not apply when you're just waking your computer from sleep)

I don't know if there are any implications to unchecking the option, but the following worked for me.  I use Windows 7 on a work computer.  could not stand the lag in websites loading.

Chrome > Settings > Show advanced settings... > Network > Change proxy settings... >  This opens the Windows 'Internet Properties' window.

In the Connections Tabs, click LAN Settings, then uncheck "Automatically detect settings

WARNING I followed the advice mentioned here and discovered a message in chrome's settings telling me 'your proxy settings are being managed by an extension'
I quickly went to extensions and found several that had been installed without my knowledge!
this is less than 24 hours after my secondary hotmail email account was compromised, then I noticed the 'downloadng proxy script' on the notification bar which led me here, - I have now removed said extensions, but I'm now seriously worried as I have logged into numerous accounts including online banking since yesterday...
I'm left rather annoyed and unsure that google could allow extensions to install behind my back!!!

I have the same issue. When I unclick the "automatically detect setting" it automatically brings up a can't load page. Been playing around with this for a week now and can't solve the problem. Would love to hear a solution.
Re: Why is chrome stuck on 'Downloading proxy script' ? Scott Spiedel 9/25/13 10:29 AM
Not really a fix, more of a workaround. Unchecking "Automatically detect proxy settings" in the Windows Internet Options may solve the issue for some but the real problem here is that Chrome should not be affected by this setting and it clearly is for some versions of Chrome.

This happened to me today, I unchecked auto detection of proxy and restarted Chrome and the issue was gone however after the restart of Chrome, Chrome notified me that it had just updated.

So this is not a fix, it's a work around. The "Fix" would be for Google to do better testing before deploying updates as checking "Automatically Detect Proxy Settings = true" is the default configuration for a vast majority of Windows Desktops.

To the poster above who stated it was "Classic" for people to blame Chrome when the issue was their "OWN" internet settings, you are incorrect. The issue is with Chromes behavior as auto detect is the most common configuration on the planet and Google needs better QA, not to mention support.
