The newly Hangout feature creates a separate window which is too big and inconvenient for my needs. I prefer the small video screen right over the txt chatting. Is there any way I can go back to that instead of google video chat which is rather inconspicuous and fits my needs perfectly.

if you find a way to go back could you please let me know as like you it exactly fitted my needs

Unfortunately, Google have not provided a way to continue with the old style.
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||S. A||8/5/12 10:37 AM|
anyone know any good alternatives to google hangout? ...
i prefer full screen and p2p connection, not this new layout. if i wanted the hangout i usualy use Google+
They could atleast have made it a option to do eiter one! not force this pile of Garb... on us.
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||bbsbucket||8/5/12 12:44 PM|
I would like the chat window attached to the video window. Are there any alternative chat clients with this feature?
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||dreamer77dd||8/5/12 8:24 PM|
If the video is better and less latency with better picture I am happy with that.
I would want to have an option for internet speed and the size of the video.
I do not know if it will automatically adjust its self when my internet speed slows down when having a conversation or not?
Also sometimes I want to look at other things, notes, documents without sharing my screen with someone or having this big video playing in front of me.
It becomes annoying.
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||meggicohen||8/6/12 9:53 AM|
I am concerned about the privacy, I can see in Google+ all the hangouts that I did when I wanted ti do a simple videochat as before!
The rest of the people can see that, or only the involved ones?
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||dcx2||8/6/12 11:53 AM|
I just restarted my web browser and now my google video chats are hangout-only. Fortunately the person I chat with has not been forced through this yet, so when she initiates the video chat, it's still the small video above the chat. However, when I initiate the video chat, it automatically forces itself to a new window. I HATE THIS! I want the video placed in a small window above the chat box like before. This way I can see the person's video while I chat with them via text.
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||LMcKin51-Power Posters/TC||8/6/12 3:28 PM|
You still have the Video chat under the more option.
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||dcx2||8/6/12 3:39 PM|
Wow! Thank you thank you thank you LMckin51! I thought I had looked everywhere but it appears there was one rock left unturned.
I can confirm that by using the More option *in the chat window* (not in gmail, not in contacts, specifically in an already open chat) that you can initiate the "old" style video chat.
I wish I could give you more rep/upvotes. I hope this feature doesn't go away. Or if it does, they at least figure out a way to embed a chat into a hangout. Although I much more prefer to have the chat/video in my gmail window so I can read emails while chatting.
Again, thank you very much! You just made my day.

I believe the option to use Video chat will eventually be turned off. However, there is an option to chat within Hangouts - when you are in a Hangout, you'll want to click the Chat button in the upper right corner (under the Google+ Hangouts logo), which will open up a sidebar chat box.
Hope that helps!
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||dcx2||8/7/12 2:11 PM|
Hi Dori, thanks for the reply.
I have looked for this Chat button, but I cannot find it. I see the Google+ Hangouts on the upper left (it is not clickable), and on the upper right I see a mic mute button, a video off button, a gear, and exit.
I do not have a Google+ account, and neither does the person I regularly video chat with; we have only gmail accounts. Will we need Google+ accounts in order to open a chat in a hangout? A requirement for a Google+ account would be a "show stopper" that would push me to search for a new video chat client, something that I would like to avoid if possible because the old video chat was perfect for my needs.
It would also be nice if the hangout could optionally be embedded in the gmail tab like the "old" video chat, instead of opening in a new tab which wastes a lot of screen space. It is nice to read emails and chat at the same time, rather than flipping back and forth between tabs. I also don't want a huge video of my chat partner like the current hangout uses, and much prefer the option of a smaller and more discrete size like the old video chat.

The button is grey, but is still clickable. Be patient, it takes a while to load.
That means you have already started the hangout. The More button that Dori mentioned is on the chat box before you start the video as in the picture below.

No. The contact shown above doesn't have Google+ enabled.
That video chat opened in the Gmail tab. It appears that (for now at least) the chat starts in the Gmail tab if you don't have G+ and in a separate window if you do.
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||Blober||8/8/12 11:13 AM|
I really think that hangout thing stinks. I prefer the ability to go full screen as needed to read pages from the other end. I also like the ability to type just below the image when the noise on the network is really bad (causing us to mute) which is more often than not anymore. I certainly hope Google is reading all this and gives the video chat back.
Gonna need a lot more than 128 people looking at this though. Why do they have to reinvent the wheel when it aint broke?

|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||theonlywineguy||8/8/12 12:23 PM|
When I go to the more options on the chat I only get the option t block user or go off record. Am I doing something incorrectly?
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||dcx2||8/8/12 1:42 PM|
Hi Keith, thanks for the reply. That is the More button that LMckin was referring to. It is separate from the issue Dori was suggesting.
Specifically, Dori believes that the old video chat will go extinct soon. That's why I was asking if there be a way to use chat from within the Hangout if I was forced to use Google+ Hangouts.
Unfortunately, I can't find the Chat button that Dori was talking about anywhere in the Google+ Hangout. I am afraid that the existence of that Chat button is predicated on my having a Google+ account; without such an account, I get the "limited" Hangout (the kind that does not support more than 2 people)
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||dcx2||8/8/12 1:44 PM|
@theonlywineguy - I had something like this happen earlier. I figured out that my chat partner didn't have the little "video" icon next to their name, which implied that I couldn't video chat with them. She had to uninstall Flash and re-install it before I could see the Video Chat option under the More menu.
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||Dori, Google Community Manager||8/8/12 2:30 PM|
You're right, I apologize for not being more clear. If you do not have a Google+ account, you will not have the chat option, or any Hangouts apps options, in your Hangout. If you are Hanging out with other Google+ users, you will have the option to use the chat feature (as well as a lot of other apps!).
Again, sorry for any confusion due to my oversight about the "limited" Hangout experience vs. the G+ experience.
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||dcx2||8/8/12 3:15 PM|
Hi Dori, thanks for the reply.It's okay, I understand that I am somewhat of an "outlier" for not using social networking. I hope that the limited Hangout can be improved in ways that compensate for the missing functionality vis-a-vis the old video chat. Otherwise, I will have to find a new video chat client if/when Google decides to turn it off. Although personally I would be very happy if it never got turned off, even if I have an extra click or two to start the video.

|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||bbsbucket||8/12/12 1:54 PM|
I checked out the video chat option which was discussed above and I believe that this option only exists for Google+ users. I don't want Google+ page in order to enable this feature. I did try it out for few minutes and surprisingly it pulled (and asked me to add) contacts from another email account I have. Scary if you have work and personal contacts in 2 different email addresses and they get added by mistake. I just want a plain and simple video chat along with voice chat which existed before these supposedly better features.
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||KeithR||8/12/12 6:24 PM|
The option is not restricted to Google+, but at my last check, non-Google+ users currently trigger off the old video chat if they start the connection. This will change in time as the new technology rolls out. [Edit: when a Google+ user invites a non-G+ user to video chat, the non-G+ user will still open the chat in the Hangouts format.]
There is no way that the Hangouts will find or add contacts from a different account unless you are also signed into the account using the same browser unless you have that account recorded as a "connected account".
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||bbsbucket||8/14/12 10:36 AM|
Thank you for your response. Old Video chat has been taken out from both the parties so we don't have a choice but to use hangout or add Google+. Not wanting the Google+, I've decided to resize the Hangout window and place it over the detached chat window. This will work for now until I find an alternative which mimics old video chat.
I don't know how the other contacts were pulled in. I do have a webmail notifier which polls the google mail servers in background and maybe that is what triggered it. The accounts are not connected. Maybe I should try to activate Google+ again and see if the same phenomenon occurs or not.
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||KeithR||8/17/12 2:42 AM|
When you are in a Hangout you should be able to open an attached chat pane. I did it once when my audio wasn't working, but don't currently have an opportunity to check it again.
|Re: I want old video chat instead of hangout.||sudseh||8/24/12 10:21 AM|
There is no "Video chat". I just checked the "more" option.

Start a text chat. When the box opens, click More there and you will find the Video chat.

There is no privacy in this. It automatically posts on google+ whom you were chatting with. I hate this new chat. Another external window to chat on. This is too much. Gmail was much easier to use before all these google+ gadgets got integrated with it. I further want to know where my chat history on this new Hangout is going. sighs. disappointed at gmail.

I am currently on Google+ but don't want to be (yet another thing to maintain), but I'm not clear on what happens to video chat/hangout if I take myself off Google+ and just go back to gmail. Does that mean that I would have no means of video chat in gmail, only if I'm on Google+? Or does Hangout still operate even if you're not on Google+? Any clarification greatly appreciated.

If you downgrade from Google+, you will still have the option to use video chat in Gmail - and it will still be a hangout, but you will only be able to do 1:1 calling (not 10:1) and you won't be able to use any of the hangout apps or the chat within the hangout window.
Hope that helps clarify!

I am the original poster of this problem. I have noticed that for past few weeks, the one to one video chat feature is back and I don't have to use hangouts. Thank you google. Now all I need is one to one google talk app with video (from Google) for my iPhone and I'm all set. I'll post another thread requesting that.

So the solution to being shoved into a ""hangout"" is.... Skype.
