Are you logged into Google Talk via eBuddy or third party IM? Turn it off.

You said you logged off chat from your phone. Did you also sign out and close any connection to Gmail? If you are signed into Gmail via the phone, the system sees you as online.

I have the same/similar issue. In Gmail I am always logged into Chat but set as Invisible. Only in the last couple of months I have started to show as visible (due to another device or other loggin I can't remember exactly what the message says)
This alternative loggin is obviously my phone but I have no idea what setting is allowing this or how to stop it. It is not at all consistent either, I pick up gmail on my phone all day whilst gmail on the desktop is also open and normally there is no problem but every few days I'll notice the desktop says I'm Visible. The best way to correct this is to close the desktop chrome browser and reopen it, then I'm Invisible again. I have G+ on the phone but don't use it other than the Instant Upload feature - even then I don't open the phone version of G+ to see the pics. There seems to be a bug somewhere so that the phone is making me visible

sweet91, try logging out of all sessions of Gmail. Make sure you are signed out of all instances of Gmail. Log into Gmail via a browser. At the bottom of Inbox page, next to Account Activities, click on Details. Then select Sign Out All Sessions.

As I posted above, if you are signed into Gmail via the phone, the system sees you as online. I'll call up a colleague who might be able to explain this more clearly.

It's not possible to control all your devices so even though you set Invisible any other active device will not obey that rule. I think Busy will show across devices but possibly not so my way round this is (I have a webcam) to add a message saying "If you don't see a webcam please don't call"

I had this same issue and resolved by doing the two following things.
|Shivani Lakshman||9/30/12 10:52 PM|
I faced the exact same problem 2 days ago.I could'nt log off.The best thing I would suggest is take your phone to your nearest mobile service centre.Usually apps in your mobile like Google talk and Yahoo! messenger are permanent --- once you log on to it,you will be online forever in that ID.In the service centre they will FLASH your mobile and it will come back as good as new.Just remember to save your contacts,photos,videos and docs or other things in your computer before you take it to the service centre.
Once the mobile is flashed,you will be able to go invisible again.....problem solved!!!!
And you could still chat in your mobile without facing any problems of visibility/invisibility.Your mobile stores the Id through which you log in the first time.So create an alternate new id and log on to it.this id will be under the circumstances of visibility problems.The next id you sign will be temporary.You will be visible only when you are logged on.You can sign off easily and lead a normal internet life.
This worked for me
Hope it does for you....

Shivani, thanks for sharing - that sounds like a good idea. One disadvantage is that you might lose access to apps you have bought through your old ID, but there are probably ways to solve that too.

Do you have a splashtop streamer account? If so, this ended up being the annoying problem for me. If your splashtop streamer account is your gmail account, whenever you are logged into splashtop, you will also be considered to be logged into gmail/gchat. If this is your issue, associate your splashtop account with a different email address!

@ay zee, Thanks for reporting that - you might help a lot of people.

I just noticed that was on-line all day, but I wasn't: all my other possible clients were off and/or off line. I even changed my password in case that someone has cracked it, but it dind't seem to work: I'm still on-line and the message: "Oops! You are not invisible because you're logged into Google Talk from another client, device, or location that doesn't support invisibility." Still shows. What to do?

I just realized that if I turn off my cell phone while I am logged into gtalk that all of my friends still see me as being available. Do we have to logout manually before turning off cell Phone? That doesn't sound very practical.
|KeithR||12/6/12 1:52 AM|
Steve, it's not necessary to sign out first. Within a minute or two, the chat network will notice that you are no longer connected and mark you as offline. If this isn't happening, you must have some other connection still alive.
Here is a list of some common applications that cause this:
Google Talk (stand alone client on PC), eBuddy, Boxbe, splashtop streamer, mobileMe
Any other third party chat client/social network that connects to your Google account might do the same.
