How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? jnvb 4/29/09 6:25 PM
What is the point of adding notes if you can't ever see them? I write things down so I don't have to remember but in all the normal viewing I can't see what I wrote down. I would like to have a option to view what I wrote in the Description on Day or Week view and when it prints.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? tigger314abq 8/2/09 8:02 PM
I agree completely. How do we get Google to add this feature?

I third that!
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? alcurran 8/9/09 9:58 PM
This is a definite must to have. Maybe if enough of us request it, they will add it.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? alcurran 8/9/09 10:47 PM
I just figured out that you can choose to print it when printing the agenda. Only place I have seen the option so far...
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? freefall 1/6/10 1:27 PM
It doesn't even show up when you click on the event. This should at least be an option I think. As the op stated, the point having a description when you cant see it is pretty useless.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? kayura60 1/17/10 2:31 PM
Funny thing is, you can view the description in google calendar with the droid but not through a browser.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? hstifano 2/15/10 5:33 PM
Yea, this feature appears on the Palm Pre too. It really needs to be a feature, notes are so useless if you can't see them.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? peter.hewat 2/22/10 3:59 AM
I agree, not being able to view the description quickly seriously reduces the usefulness of the calendar, especially in the Agenda view. Maybe google could add this in the Labs?
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? curt.jaimungal 3/30/10 5:10 PM
I'm still waiting for this feature.  It would really help with productivity if they did, as well as more people using calendar.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? peter.hewat 3/31/10 1:44 AM
This thread is almost one years old. I am starting do doubt that we are going to get this feature request/bug fixed any time soon even though it is blatantly missing to anyone who actually uses the calendar for any real work.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? peter.hewat 3/31/10 1:51 AM
I just realized: this thread has been marked as answered! The "Popular answers" are not answers at all, they are acknowledging the fact that the first post is making a valid feature request. No wonder no one at Google will ever see these comments! :(

I guess I will have to give up google calendar for an other system that has this (obvious) feature.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? peter.hewat 5/9/10 3:27 PM
Hi Dingus,
Unfortunetly, "expand all" will only show the "Creator" and "Where" field but not "Description".
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? peter.hewat 5/9/10 3:48 PM
> Really?

Surprisingly yes!

> Darn it.

Indeed

> I think in the Sneak Preview the description in Agenda View was moderately visible, but I could be wrong.

You are wrong ;)

> This is such a requested feature,

I agree

> maybe it can be implemented somehow into the expanded Agenda View?

You'd think so...

> It will waste space though, printing all that extra stuff.

As stated above, it is actually possible to get the description field to appear when you are in agenda view and you select "Print". You are then able to "Print Descriptions:", but this is certainly not a convenient means to quickly view event details (which is the point of this thread).

> I guess for now, maybe just put relevant details in the title field.

That isn't a very satisfactory solution for any serious real world use.

Unfortunately, I have lost complete faith this issue will ever get any attention. This entire discussion thread is pointless as well due to how this topic is marked as "answered" when in fact it certainly has not... (cf. previous comments)
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? peter.hewat 5/9/10 4:02 PM
The only way to view a description is by actually clicking on individual events to edit them. Even in agenda view you have to fake a print to obtain descriptions so yes, this is pretty impractical.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? PhillipSenn 6/11/10 12:52 PM
The software - it no worky.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? ComradeHaz 7/18/10 3:09 AM
This is a must. Come on Google, stop wasting time on all the stupid stuff nobody wants and sort out these niggles first!
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? standjenna 8/29/10 6:28 PM
I completely agree. It would be immensely helpful to be able to see event descriptions when in the month/week view of Google Calendar without having to always click edit event details. If there is any way to add this feature, please do! Thank you.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? c00ller 8/31/10 5:15 PM
Wowow I can't believe this is still an issue. I just got an Android phone and converted EVERYTHING I had to Google. This is one of the serious drawbacks... come on now, Google!
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? jotilbaba 9/1/10 3:52 AM
I've had my windows mobile synchronized with my google account and all my calender events show their "description" by only clicking on the event. I don't have to go into the editing mode for viewing the description (in a windows mobile, this is "Notes", which turns into description in google after syncing).

This is really friendly to view my descriptions just by clicking, but in my pc I have to go to the event editing page which is very annoying. Google should enable viewing the descriptions on the pop-up bar.

Even in the "Agenda" view there is a "+" button on the left side of every event. But after clicking it, it only shows the delete and edit event button. These two buttons could appear by moving the mouse over them like the "Remove" button appears in facebook when I need to delete any post off my own wall. I guess this isn't necessary enough to have a "+" button just to view "Delete" and "Edit event details", rather I'd like to see what I wrote in the "Description" section in my events. Google should make it more easy to view the "Description" section.

They also have two buttons: "Expand All" and "Collapse All". The 1st one does work of "+" button for every events I'm watching in the Agenda view. How on earth is this necessary?
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? ieuan_jenkins 9/2/10 1:27 PM
I want this too!  It's bizarre they haven't already implemented it...
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? Lunalba 9/2/10 5:43 PM
TOTALLY AGREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! AS A VOLUNTEER GOOGLE PROMOTER AND  UNOFFICIAL GMAIL POLICE, I WOULD REALLY ENJOY THAT FEATURE!!!
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? UnknownDreamer 9/16/10 10:59 AM
Hey Folks... I entirely agree with you all about the sorry lack of description note field implementation.  However, I would like to contribute that I thought of a little workaround to share with everyone, which is pretty common sense but took me a moment to think up.  I simply add an asterix* after the title of my event.  For example, "Meet with Friends*" and then this gives me a visual cue to the fact that I have written something in the description field.  Not the perfect workaround, but it does the job.  Hope this helps until Google picks up the slack...
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? aegillis 9/20/10 11:22 PM
An alternative is to use the tasks. The notes entered for a task do show up when you click on it in the calendar view. The problem is you have to be sure to add due dates to each task which is more of a pain then for calendar events. You also can't do repeating tasks (I don't think at least). Can't import/export your task list, too. The tasks feature has a lot of potential but, unfortunately, is implemented pretty poorly.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? mikedotgatkb 10/21/10 11:49 AM
Ditto! Ditto! Ditto! Agenda view with description doesnt work.

I need to see the description on the month view. And the end time (not just the start time) Currently using a manual word calendar and emailing that to people. FAIL!
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? cumbrianbloke 11/21/10 1:41 AM
Don't know if it helps anybody but I find that "description" is displayed on an /embedded/ calendar. Pops up together with "where" when you click on the event to expand it.  See, for example, the Events tab on http://milburnvillagehall.org.uk/
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? PRB84 11/25/10 12:47 AM
Google, is it to much to add a simply feature to show the event description in the google calendar? It's a good calendar, but it's getting really annoying that I have to click every event to see the description.

Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? ben.williamson 12/8/10 4:01 AM
I NEED to be able to see description in agenda view :(
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? RussTuck 12/19/10 10:27 AM
YES!! Please add this feature.  We use this to schedule technician jobs in the field.  It would be great for the supervisor to take a quick look at the notes and see the Work Order number and a quick blurb on the wokr to be done.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? casiosmu 12/20/10 2:50 AM
Yeah, I want to add my vote for this feature.
Please let us see the event description in the week-view-bubble.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? staplegun 1/5/11 12:32 PM
Ditto! At the moment you have to click in then out then in then out then in then out over and over to see what's going on.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? dannymcki 1/6/11 7:03 AM
Ditto!  This would be a nice and needed add to a great calendar.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? John Yoon 98 1/11/11 1:47 PM
I'd rather continue using Live Hotmail Calendar 'cause it shows you the description in a dialog box.
I COULD EVEN ADD HYPERLINKS THERE.

Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? pknail1915 2/7/11 8:38 AM
What's the purpose of the Description in a public calendar if the public can't see it?

Right, None!
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? mudfolk 2/10/11 12:31 PM
Just want to join in here and express a strong need to have easy access to descriptions / notes.  Notes I keep in description bar are as important and sometimes more important than other identifying information.  I hope Google will quickly make changes necessary.  At least a mark of some sort indicating that there is a note in the description cause I check it later and have to go through all entries to find what I previously allready wrote to remind myself (did that make sense?).
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? Alibird 2/10/11 12:51 PM
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ADD THE ABILITY TO PRINT A SINGLE EVENT INCLUDING IT'S DESCRIPTION.  WHY WON'T YOU ADD THIS? IT'S A NO-BRAINER, DEAD SIMPLE, AND YOUR CALENDER IS RIDICULOUS WITHOUT IT. IT'S AN ERROR NOT TO HAVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? repairman123 3/7/11 12:28 PM
yeah, firstable you need to add an icon to the event so we know there is a note/description for this event, then when I click on it, it should show the notes.   AND in search I should be able to search the description.

I am telling you....google calendar is so half baked and designed by monkies.   You will have to be super dumb to miss these easy to implement features.   Palm calendar has this since 2006.

Google is turning into microsoft and IBM.  and delivers half ass products.  I should have bought an iphone.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? Tommo 3/14/11 6:17 PM
If you view your GCal through Outlook as an internet calendar (ical format, read only) you can then select "with auto-preview" and see the description of your event in outlook, in the weekly view - which is what you seem to be asking for google to be able to do itself - which I agree it should!!
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? tmv915 3/31/11 12:16 PM
You would expect a company like Google to do something THIS simple, yet it seems like it's going to be a long way until they get it. It's really not much to ask.

yeah... some things google does a good job at, and then you run into issues that make you want to scream "who the f- engineered this!". Google can be very retarded sometimes.

+100

Google, please get on this.  Being able to view an event description in the balloon pop up is not a major thing to implement and people have been requesting this feature for a very, VERY long time.

Funny thing is, when I click on "expand all," they think it's important to show me a bunch of colors with a check box.  This might be important in some way I'm not aware of yet, but who could think it's more important than being able to read the contents of the description field.  "Expand all" should show the description field.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? Smumdax 5/23/11 1:44 PM
Thread now over 2 years old... I realized today that this was something I needed. Went to Labs, didn't find it there... then cam here to suggest it, and found this thread instead.... NEED TO SEE DESCRIPTION! (PS: what is the ASCII code for a line-jump ?)
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? tmv915 5/25/11 9:35 PM
What's even more infuriating is that it's a simple software fix as well. Do the people at google just not use google calendar?
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? ripeka 6/29/11 10:01 PM
Unbelieveable that this has been an issue for 2 years!  I have never used Google Calendar and are looking to change over. Guess what my FIRST query problem was?! How do I easily view the description? And here I find this thread.  Useless.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? pdennis 7/19/11 10:13 AM
I just switched from outlook and find this feature missing and yet this threat is TWO YEARS OLD!!!  Does google even read these threads?
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? iMactinez 8/8/11 10:20 PM
This is a two year post and i dont know if its too late but i would like this option not so much for notes but i want to see "who" and "where".
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? tmv915 8/23/11 6:54 PM
I wonder if Google employees even use their own services... This is a really basic thing that any calendar should have; how do they deal with it
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? waccoo 8/29/11 8:25 AM
This feature is missing, most of my events have a description that cannot be added in the title, and i need to view them quickly when clicking on the event.
Come on google, that's been a long time since this as been requested .... :-)
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? waxorlux 9/9/11 11:25 AM
To view the descriptions you got to edit the event. Unbeleavable that nobody of google has fixed this yet. Please add a feature to view descriptions by mouse over.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? tmv915 9/9/11 9:30 PM
It's been a while now. This is more proof that Google sometimes use their own fucking products. Seriously, you'd think that something like this would be the first thing you'd think of when making an intuitive calendar app.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? Welton Church 9/21/11 8:39 AM
THE DESCRIPTION FIELD USED TO SHOW UP AND STILL DOES, but only if you have it embedded in another website.

The functionality is there but the implementation is sadly lacking.  I have the calendar embedded in my church website and the description field clearly shows up when the item is clicked.  I also discovered that a hyperlink works but only if you insert it into the description field, so it's very important for me that you can at least see the description field.  Take a look at www.weltonchurch.org.uk, you'll find the calendar in the shortcuts on the right of the home page.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? missjessd 9/23/11 3:25 AM
What's the point in going to all the trouble of writing notes and descriptions when the only way to view them is to go back to 'edit'?! Google, come on!

Yes, please add this feature.  Having to edit the event just to see the description seems a little inefficient.

+1!  Google fails to implement a few obvious features including synergy between contacts and it's other services like maps etc...
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? anony-mouse 1/24/12 2:43 PM
Hello everyone,

I know it's really frustrating that no one from the Google Team has responded to our pleas... I really wish they had this basic feature!!

But as we can see, no one is going to listen to us here on the forums.

But there is something we can do: SEND FEEDBACK DIRECTLY TO GOOGLE! How? Inside GCal, click on the little gears button on the upper-right-hand corner next to your email address and click on "Send Feedback."

If we send enough responses, they might just do something about it!
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? mizusajt 2/22/12 12:54 PM
So about a month ago I was able to put a description in and then view it when I clicked on the event.

Furthermore, I was able to add html tags into the description and they worked perfectly.

Now, for whatever reason, Google calendar doesn't display the descriptions. Again.

This is a bit problematic for me because I'm relying on the html support for a feed I'm running, and if I don't know if the html works, I can''t proceed on this project. And it also makes me feel a bit crazy because I am so sure I could see the description without having to edit it last month,  but now it's completely gone.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? 67north 3/12/12 12:45 AM
My solution is to add all notes in the "Where" field.  Then the text shows up in the pop-up in browsers, and in android when selecting the event.
Clearly not an optimal solution, but better than waiting forever for Google to fix this big problem.

To clarify, I believe it's called a Windows Live calendar now.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? jlpia 5/28/12 9:24 AM
This option is great for those wishing to be not-eco-friendly and like to carry something else besides their smart phone.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? marz volpots 5/28/12 5:55 PM
The addition of a calendar view that allows viewing the descriptions would not only enhance the usual use of the in viewing future events, it would alolow the calendar to become a very efficient logging/reporting tool.  I'm using it to track time usage in relation to diet and exercise, and if I could extract the descriptions I could use it to track the actual workouts and foods consumed at meals.  As it is I can put them in but not get them out (easily!) - the bane of any tracking application.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? dbaconcord 6/20/12 7:04 AM
I use the calendar description to summarize the work I performed that day, so when I need to do a quarterly report I have to open each day individually to get the descriptions so I can retrieve the most important accomplishments for the quarter.  It would save hours if I could see the descriptions in daily or weekly view.  For a while a portion of the description would show up in the weekly view but this no longer occurs...don't know how it started or why it went away but we need it!
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? dbaconcord 6/20/12 7:18 AM
I did try the print option for the quarter and then clicked on "open" instead of "print" and everything I needed was there (I had to select the option box for showing descriptions and deselected all the other option boxes I didn't need) so thanks to the person who suggested this earlier in the thread!

I can live with this, but the option to see it from the daily or weekly view would still be nice when I just want to copy info from a past description.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? narkoid 6/20/12 10:55 AM
fyi you can double click the event name and it pulls up the edit page where you can view the description and attached files
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? Super A 7/16/12 2:56 PM
I also find it extreemly anoying that viewing event descriptions is only possible by going into edit mode.  C'mon Google, you're way to good to not include this very basic viewing experience.

Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? jpgilman 7/20/12 11:49 AM
You can actually now do part of this.  You can't see the Description on the Calendar itself, but there is a way to see it in the dialog without clicking "Edit event".  Navigate to the Calendar's Settings.  Click the HTML link in the Calendar Address row.  Follow the link, which should render a calendar view that includes the Description in the Dialog.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? jpgilman 7/20/12 11:53 AM
Go to the calendar's settings.  Click the HTML button in Calendar Address row.  Follow the link to a calendar view that includes description in event dialog.  HTML tags work fine.
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? Bruce. 8/6/12 2:33 AM
I would also like to be able to see an event's description when I click on an event in the month view, and also on the agenda view--either by default, or have the option of turning this on. (I read it's available on Android, but I don't see it on PC yet.)

I need to be able to quickly scan my events and see notes I've added to them, but have them separate from the title since I need the title to be short and easy to read for readability purposes.

Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? Bruce. 8/6/12 2:36 AM
I don't see the "Calendar Address" row in the settings. Can you find it using Ctrl+F in a browser?
Re: How do I view "description" in Google Calendar or when its been printed? kellydanie 8/10/12 11:01 AM
Even if I click on the HTML button I still have to select each event individually to see the details.  I am a teacher and would like to use this in place of my lesson plans.  I want to be able to view ALL the subjects I am teaching the the details of those subjects.  GRRR!

It seems that the place for asking for this feature is here http://support.google.com/calendar/bin/static.py?hl=en&page=suggestions.cs  I get the impression that asking on this thread makes no difference at all.  So after following the link I wrote under "I have another Idea" -->"Helpful Additions" -->"Event descriptions should be view able by hovering pointer over event title or always visible in a scrollable window next to each even."  I hope this helps us win our cause.

I feel your pain. As the administrator of a small (28 users) domain using Google Apps for Business I opened a support ticket for this problem. After considerable back-and-forth I'm sorry to report that I failed to convince anyone that this is a problem. They see it as a feature request, and although the first person I dealt with said it is frequently requested, a higher-level person said he doesn't see it often. Also, they appear to have no way to follow up on the request. They can only submit it and then reassure you that all requests are taken seriously, etc.

I tend to agree that this discussion will never result in changes. If you are using the paid version of Google Apps then I encourage you to open a support ticket for this and give it a try. I imagine if your domain consists of 1000 or 10,000 users, then you might get more attention than I did. Thanks for trying.

I agree I want to write down descriptions of physics demo that need to be set up for classes and it doesn't help that I can't see the descriptions easily.

Google Calendar is still the best online calendar, but I agree -- It would be much better if the description were included in the pop-up when you mouse over an event in monthly view. That is the one thing Zoho has over Google.

I've started an open source Google Calendar Gadget project that may help some people with this problem.

Unfortunately there appear to be a number of bugs in the Gadgets API that limit what can be done with a gadget... it only works with events in the primary calendar that are marked as "Busy", and scrolling within the gadget doesn't work yet :-/ It's free and as such I can't provide support... but please let me know how it works for you. if you use it.

To contribute to the project you can find it here: https://code.google.com/p/google-calendar-descriptions/

Disclaimer: I am the owner of the commercial software GCalToolkit (http://gcaltoolkit.com), AFAIK the only tool that can make easy mass edits to busy/free status... but if you need to use this gadget and can't afford my software then you can always perform a search replace on the iCal export from Google, then reimport.

The extension Black Menu for Google has a calendar section which displays a month view, an agenda view, and a list of your tasks in one popup window (as well as some other handy features, like search for your calendars and the ability to add or edit events). Clicking on one of the items in the agenda view gives you all the information you have on that item, including notes. So long as Google calendar won't show notes, this is a pretty handy substitute which works fine for me.
