Reviews bouncing back but my score is now 4.5 but it is still 5.0 in my dash k123abc 12/3/13 6:00 PM
My reviews have been coming and going in the last week or two and I understand there are some changes going on, but has anybody noticed their scores changing too? Mine has dropped to 4.5 but it is still 5.0 in my review analytics in my dash? Am I alone in this?

Probably not.

I am having the same problem.

I have 14 reviews, 13 of which are 5 stars and one a 4 star. That averages out to 4.9, however, Google has me at 4.2.

they include ALL reviews from across the web for the score, look through your dash reviews other than google ones to see if you have any negative ones.

e123abc,
Google has not given any indication that the calculation of the rating score includes reviews from around the web, where did you get the idea that they do?
Thanks

Google has indicated that the average review score does include factors other than the reviews on the local listing.

"We calculate an overall rating based on user ratings and a variety of other signals to ensure that the overall score best reflects the quality of the establishment."
https://support.google.com/plus/answer/1723748?hl=en

One popular guess about what those other signals are is reviews on other sites.  Not just their score, but how many of them there are and how many different review sites the business is reviewed on.  For example, if a business has a dozen perfect reviews on their Google Local Page, but no reviews on any other review site Google might take that as a signal that the reviews are not completely organic and discount the review score somewhat.  That is just a hypothetical, I have no idea what those 'other signals' are or how Google may factor them into the review score.

This idea - like everything we know about how google collects, organizes, and presents data - is just an educated guess.  Google won't give us any specifics about how their algorithms work.

Sorry Hector, I just noticed that it was you asking the question.  And you already knew all of that.

I am noticing this on tons of listings as of this morning. Trying to find out if it is intended or not.

do have access to their dash scores? do they match the serp scores?
Re: Reviews bouncing back but my score is now 4.5 but it is still 5.0 in my dash JoyHawkins 12/4/13 5:04 PM
No. The dashboard has an Average rating of 5.  The live Google Places listing used to have 4.9 but now has 4.5

I have 2 others that have the exact same thing.

That's really BS... I have perfect scores on every other website that allows reviews.  8 Five star ratings on Google and now I'm at 4.5 'stars' with no published reason?  It's important for EVERYONE to know how that score is calculated otherwise it's just an insignificant number!

I have 7 five star reviews and my score has gone from 5.0 to 4.9 to 4.5!!!  FURIOUS!!! Makes customers think that I have had some bad reviews. Work damn hard, and Google are impossible to contact! My 5 stars are coloured yellow, but the fifth star is only half yellow!
Re: Reviews bouncing back but my score is now 4.5 but it is still 5.0 in my dash k123abc 12/5/13 2:27 PM
I still don't get why my dash says 5.0 but serp is 4.5, that doesn't make sense.
Re: Reviews bouncing back but my score is now 4.5 but it is still 5.0 in my dash othersteve 12/5/13 3:05 PM
Yeah, this is just generally a terrible idea.  It's one of those examples of a "hey, what if we..." circumstance that someone thought might be cool to try, what with the vast menagerie of statistical data that Google has at their fingertips for perusal.  But in reality it just makes it look like incorrect math to anyone who's reading the page and paying attention... and to those who aren't, it looks like there are legitimately some people out there who are not thrilled with the business.

It's happening to me, too, of course.  I've worked for years to please each and every customer beyond anything they could possibly expect, and consequently, I have a perfect score across all metrics on the web.  No joke, totally authentic.  But now, I'm a 4.6/5.0 on Google, and that final star is a half star.

It'll probably be reversed/nixed.  It's dumb and doesn't make any sense, so I can't imagine they'd keep it this way.  It's just a bad experiment.

We have been experiencing the same issue with our reviews as well.  Despite 16 5 star reviews, it has dropped to 4.5 overall.

We had a similar issue with Yelp as well.  They contacted us to advertise with them, and when we declined, they dropped our ratings.

Is it possible Google is doing the same?

It is absolutely NOT the case that advertising (or not) with Google would affect your rating in ANY way, shape or form.

Yep, Keenan is 100% right.
Re: Reviews bouncing back but my score is now 4.5 but it is still 5.0 in my dash Phil D'Angelo 12/9/13 3:33 PM
I've been curious about this myself. I have 23 reviews on Google, about a half dozen on Yahoo, one or two on Yelp. Every single review is a solid 5 Star and my Google rating started at 5.0, then 4.9, now 4.5 stars. I get that Google uses other factors to come up with this rating but I STRONGLY disagree with this method. It's very misleading to potential customers because it shows as follows: 4.5 *'s / 23 Reviews. It insinuates that the 4.5* rating is an average from the 23 reviews. The natural assumption is that there's a not so good rating in there somewhere. I work extremely hard and strive daily for 100% customer satisfaction. To see this is very disheartening. I prefer the ratings to reflect "Customer Reviews" which is exactly how a searching customer assumes the business is rated. All the other so called "Variety of Signals" that "Reflect the quality of the establishment" should be mentioned separately. This doesn't necessarily apply to all businesses and is not relevant for all businesses. Who would know better about my business and service I provide than an existing customer. Just like word of mouth, when I hear from several people that "Giovanni's Italian Restaurant is amazing" I know where to go the next time I want Italian food. I don't go searching for reasons to make me doubt how those people, who frequent there, rate Giovanni's. I'll try it and decide for "Myself."  Not fair at all for the hardworking small business owner. Very disappointing. I think Google should seriously rethink this.

I think we can all agree this doesn't make sense, but if google says we're a now a 4.5, then why is my review analytic's dash still saying I'm a 5.0? This I would like to understand.

I think the technical term is "computer glitch."

I'm going to hope the glitch is on the 4.5 side and not the 5.0 then    :o)

I'm staying positive.  I've worked with Places enough and bugs happen all the time.  I am still bugging Google for a more definite answer.
