Different numbers for pageviews and exit percentage on All Pages and Exit Pages in Content department Jan Hoogeveen 6/5/12 1:30 AM
The numbers of Pageviews and Exit percentages in Content > All Pages do not match the numbers in Content > Exit Pages.
Both reports show the same overall Pageviews (9574, 100%) and Exit % (20,90%) for the entire website. But the numbers for individual pages are not matching.

For some pages the Exit Pages report shows a number of Pageviews is even higher than the total number of Pageviews on Content > All Pages;
for other pages the Exit Pages report shows a number of Pageviews is even lower than the number of unique Pageviews on Content > All Pages;
for other pages the Exit Pages report shows a number of Pageviews in between the total number of Pageviews and the number of unique Pageviews on Content > All Pages.
Accordingly, the Exit percentages are different on both pages.

Anyone an explanation or, even better, a solution for this mismatch?

Some examples:
Content > All Pages gives for Page X 2501 pageviews and 1325 unique pageviews, Exit 19,51%
Content > Exit Pages gives for Page X 1613 pageviews, Exit 30,25%

Content > All Pages gives for PageY 413 pageviews and 385 unique pageviews, Exit 40,19%
Content > Exit Pages gives for PageY 664 pageviews, Exit 25,00%

Content > All Pages gives for PageZ 160 pageviews and 101 unique pageviews, Exit 7,50%
Content > Exit Pages gives for PageZ 60 pageviews, Exit 20,00%

Hi,

I may not be 100% correct, but this is what my understanding for Google Analytics.

For every page view on your site there must be page exit corresponding to that session.

Say for example You have visited 10 pages on a website and left the web site at 10th Page. As per GA, the Page views for 10th page is one under Content -> All pages.

But for the same page, 10th Page, under exit pages, it has 10 Page views. Reason as explained above it will add all the page views in that session and assigned that number as Page views under Content->Exit pages.

Again, I am not 100% sure on this,  might be some top contributor or Google employee can confirm on my answer.

Sam

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your reply.
Let me see if I understand it correctly.
Content > All Pages shows all (and unique) pageviews of the given pages;
Content > Exit Pages shows the total of pages viewed in every session before exiting the website on the given page.

Is this correct?

Hi Sam,

Your reply leaves me with another question though.

If the number of pageviews on Content > Exit Pages shows the number of pages viewed in every session before the visitors exit the website on the given page, then what is the meaning of the % Exit?
It must be the number of exits on the given page divided by the number of pages viewed before exititng the website.
So, for example an exit rate of 25% then means that the average visitor visits 4 pages before exiting the website on page X, an exit rate of 10% means that the average visitor visits 10 pages before exiting the website on page Y.

But what does that tell me?

Hi,

I think the below example helps you to understand completely.

Visitor visited the web site page in the following pages.

a.html -> b.html -> c.html and then left the site.

Under Content -> Site COntent -> All Pages

Toatl page views - 3
Unique Page views - 3
% Exit: 33.33%

a.html:

page views - 1
Unique Page views - 1
% Exit: 0%

b.html:

page views - 1
Unique Page views - 1
% Exit: 0%

c.html:

page views - 1
Unique Page views - 1
% Exit: 100%

Under Content -> Site COntent -> Exit pages (Only one page will appear because there was only one exit page.)

c.html:

page views - 3
Exits - 1
% Exit: 33.33%

 I hope its clear now.

Regards
Sam

Hi,

we just verified that this is explanation is correct,

by creating a segment where: exit page=Page XYZ

total number of page views for that segment was equal to "pageviews" under site content->exit pages.

you can try this yourself and let us know.

Hi Sampatirao,

I just verified your explanation, you are 100 % right.

I just created a segment for people exiting at page c.html
Then the total number of pageviews for this segment of users is 3.

Thanks and Regards,
Vivek,
